To anyone who feels discouraged after watching this video: I got my first job in the industry as a character specific concept artist, and I was as junior as they get. I know many many artists at WB Games Montreal, Eidos Montreal, and Atomhawk Vancouver, and many of them did exactly the same. In fact, logic would dictate that if you indeed could not do characters as a junior, and everyone had to start their career in environments, it would then be impossible for their to be artists who have never done environments, but I can assure you there are plenty. The advice to learn environments to start with so that you can do characters one day is not solid advice. As I moved into the industry, the thing my mentors told me is to know exactly what you want to do, and don’t sidetrack. Atomhawk specifically has character concept art positions open to all levels, there’s always a place if you just want to do characters. It can be an asset to be able to do both, but that’s not something everyone can expect from themselves. The only thing to keep in mind is that you have to be a functional designer to get any job and you have to present your work in a way that functions with your art directors and clients, but that is the same no matter what discipline you are in.
thanks for the insightful interview! the demo is also quite helpful, I love how Gue is bridging the gap between painting and drawing, it's a workflow that makes a lot of sense to me, I'm gonna attempt at it :D cheers !
Love it! Awesome interview, learned a lot. I will return here from time to time to absorb more and more. And I'm sorry if something is spelled wrong. Still learning English.
Thanks for the opportunity, Janos! I had a great time with this interview!

Anytime again Gue !!!
