  • In this video I finally explain the difference between wide-band and narrow-band as it relates to GMRS radios. I explain what wideband is, what narrowband is, if wideband and narrowband are compatible, and what issues arise when talking on a narrowband radio to a wideband radio.

Actually pretty awesome. I went to a very detailed page explaining it all. I was under the impression wide band would clip more because it would be at the limits of the band width. While the narrow band would be more clear as it stayed within the bands and would offer less clipping and static. Then you made the video. Boom! Thank you Sir!

Narrow-to-narrow cuts through static brilliantly. If you're only communicating with a small group and never with anybody outside that group, stick to narrow if your radio does both. Wide is the default, but narrow-to-narrow will get through clearer when you're both weak to each other.

Nicely done Chris and Randy! The only other decent video I’ve seen on the whole wide band versus narrow band thing likewise used a waterfall display to show the difference between the two. As a practical matter, someone stuck with a narrow band radio could ask the person they’re talking with to back off their mic a little. This would eliminate a lot of that clipping.
Somewhat confusingly, I’ve seen programming packages that express wide band/narrow band in terms of channel spacing, with options like 25k versus 12.5k. In such a case, picking the bigger of the two (25k) is the same as picking wide band.
Keep the videos coming Randy! Great stuff!
