    It's incredible that we had a truly 3D racing sim before the 1980s were over.

      What's even more incredible is how playable and fun it was. It's something noone expected. On the other hand, Papyrus did became masters of the genre within the next few years, so they clearly knew what they were doing. xD

    Wasteland is one of my favorite games of all time. It had the feel of 80's post-apocalyptic imagery. It is understandable that "you had to be there" for this one to really click, and most people just know the "spiritual successor" Fallout series, and sadly the sequels Wasteland 2 and 3 just don't fit into that setting being a product from not only decades later, but with heavy influence from Fallout itself.
    Anyway, I'll always love the first one.

    Sierra text parser games are one of the reasons I could start learning english from when I was only 5 years old. There was no internet, or really any toddler language courses. Indi 500 was probably the most high-tech game back then. I had a release supporting Sound Blaster 2.0. Street Rod and the MicroProse flight simulators were super good. However I think you missed "Budokan" which was amazing game back then, also 1989. Speaking of "Rick Dangerous" we must mention John Romero's first game - "Dangerous Dave" first version of which was silly but ok. MicroProse's "Airborne Ranger" 1987 but I think worth mentioning. And LucasFilm Ltd "Zak McKraken and the Alien Mindbenders" was 1988 but I think we could mention it here too.

    • @OldAndNewVideoGames

      Thing with those lists is that it's difficult to compile a list without dropping some awesome games, and also regardless of how much you try to objective, bits and pieces of your own gaming preferences always push through when deciding on those last few spots. ;)
      Don't know if that's any consolation, but the games that I've "missed" here, I've covered in other videos in different series in the past already.

    Harpoon was an amazing game for its time. And really, it's more simulator than game even. There were literally hundreds of things you had to keep in mind unless you wanted to get trashed. Set a good formation for all naval groups, super important. Speed for all units, too fast for ships and formations becomes nonfunctional and subs can hear you from FAR away, too slow and you become easy to target with longrange missiles... Etc...
    I can brag that i've won all the original game scenarios as both sides. Basic truth, if you're given enough Backfire bombers, you can ALWAYS win the scenario. Never played on PC though, just Amiga.
    Sword of the samurai was a great game. Basically, it's the ancestor of Total war series, minus the RPG stuff.
    Battle chess... *lol* You just played it to see all the different takeouts.
    And wow, someone brought up Space rogue. I had that on the C-64 and it took me ages to figure out how to finish it. But i had a lot of fun hunting pirates in the meantime.

    • @OldAndNewVideoGames
      @OldAndNewVideoGames  Месяц назад +1

      Harpoon was always a little bit too much for my young self, and I was never as good at it as I was at Silent Service 2 and Aces of the Deep. These two were more straightforward and focused on subs only.
      I figured that showing a few encounters between the pieces in Battle Chess would be more interesting to watch then just chess. xD

    • @DIREWOLFx75
      @DIREWOLFx75 Месяц назад

      @@OldAndNewVideoGames Yeah, Harpoon is a largescale advanced combat simulator while SS2 and AotD are submarine gamesims.
      At least 2 levels of magnitude difference in complexity.
      In the subsims, unless you do something really bad or have bad luck, the question is usually how successful you can be.
      While in Harpoon, there's thousands upon thousands of mistakes you can make and a constant stream of decisions you have to make to have any CHANCE of success.
      But, the sheer satisfaction of taking one of the difficult or big scenarios and then, for example sinking the three entire USN carrier groups within minutes of each other AND get away with it without taking any losses of your own...
      That's just NICE. I think i had to replay that scenario about a dozen times before i managed that, and it took a lot of juggling forces around and several tries to figure out how to move units to not get them smacked down before they could reach positions.
      Not to mention the difficulty just in setting up targeting and how much to fire, when and from where.
      ...
      Of course, THEN i figured out how to mod the game... ;)

    So many great games, but I admit I have my rose-tinted glasses. I was given my first pc in 1987, a monster with a whopping 512k of RAM. These games were played, replayed, & traded with friends. Copy protection was in its infancy, so my friends & I made sure not to buy duplicate titles and instead make copies for one another.
    Wasteland was very similar to The Bard's Tale series, so familiarity with one helped with the other. There is a remastered version which gives it smoother visuals without functionally changing the game. I recommend it for those who find the original offputting. It & 1990's "Dark Knights of Krynn", a Dragonlance "gold box" game are on my PC now.
    Space Quest was so much fun, but there were times when I couldn't figure out how to interact with the objects onscreen. There were no wikis & walkthroughs, so we had to go to a BBS & post a question, then hope for the best.
    I apologize for the extra long comment. It saddens me that Mechwarrior didn't make the cut for essential games of '88. One great thing about these old games is so many are available via abadonware sites, if you don't want to pay Steam $10 for a 35-year old game.

      @@OldAndNewVideoGames Wow. Massive tip of the hat to you, sir. Yes, I played MUDs for far too many hours. It was an unhealthy addiction for me. There were so many, so it was always possible to find one or more which appealed to any given user. I didn't hang it up until about 10 years ago. MMORPGs filled that niche, for better or worse.
      I also wrote & designed areas for a few MUDs. If you enjoyed D&D, reading, & a bit of coding, (not that uncommon a mix among tech nerds), it was enjoyable. The main task was to write descriptions of rooms, objects, & NPCs which were interesting & helpful without making it a chore to read.

      Amusing side story. There were MUD clients, which allowed a player functions like setting paths, triggers, & macros. One had a 30-day trial period. We would set the clock on the PC forward by 200 years, install the client, and reset the clock. The trial version would then be viable for 200 years and 30 days.

    I was wrong in my previous assumption. This is not a good or great video, it's an awesome one. The perfect thing after a tiring work day. :)
    Oh, I wanted to add something about Hero's Quest. It had to be renamed later due to a copyright clash with another game. It became Quest for Glory. Quite a nice game.
    Ooh, Neuromancer! I read the book and apparently forgot it completely. :D And of course I'm adding all the space and sci-fi games to my list. I've heard of Space Quest and almost tried the first one, but died instantly. So I'll have to try the series again armed with a walkthrough and quick parser typing skill.
    There is a point in Mean Streets where you talk about the boss' wife's crippling stare and a cyclops comes up on the screen. Perfect timing! XD
    And your review of Rockstar! is a real comedic gem, poetry and all. :D The game itself is something else. Your grandma and mother inviting you to wild parties and offering you drugs? Wow. XD And also, nice choice for songs. :D

      Thanks! You're very kind! I would hope so, I was up after 2am working on it. And I'm fine with how it ended up being. :) Though, I feel the next one (3rd episode in Windows 1999) will be even better.
      Go for the Quest for Glory straight away, in my opinion remake is better than this original.
      An no, my bosses wife is nowhere as nice as that Cyclops is. She's mean and evil to the core. And he's only a little mutated. Things happen in the future, you know, we gotta be understanding and used to things being more interesting than they are now. :P But yeah, timing was impeccable. Even if accidental.
      And Rockstar... They're good songs, you know. :P

      Well, Quest for Glory from what I've understood is just a rename, but still the same game. It looks the same as what you were showing in the video.
      True, that poor cyclops was just an innocent mutant. He looked kind of distressed too. Probably had something in his eye. This thing reminds me of that scene in Men in Black where the recruits had a shooting test. ;)

    1992. That's the first golden year of DOS. Most of the games from 1989 were either better on the Amiga (usually because the sound quality was much better) or not very good. It wasn't until 1992 when it really clicked; games could safely assume some kind of half-decent sound card, a faster CPU than an Amiga (particularly the old amiga 500's that games still had to target because they were so omnipresent), a VGA screen and a hard drive. This year also dropped the 3 killer games; wolfenstein 3D, Ultima underworld (the most ahead-of-it's-time game ever created by a wide margin) and ultima VII.

    DOS era and the 1990s saw a boom in space and scifi games. Amazingly people only talk about arcade and FPS and not scifi games. There were incredible games during DOS era and during the war of the videocards during late 1990s.

    Help, I'm looking for a game I don't know the name of. It was a DOS RPG. You had four characters ( I think). You start in a medieval town and you head into the sewers. There are levels upon levels of tunnels. Sometimes the walls change appearance as you descend. I think mostly it was Grey stone walls covered in green slime/mold. You encounter more normal enemies in the upper levels like " ruffians" or " thieves". As you descend you begin encountering skeletons, vampires and other supernatural creatures. If you died you had to return to a monastery on the surface to get your character revived for a payment of gold. If you inspected the walls of the tunnel ( you couldn't see it) but text would tell you that someone has written " help" on the walls. When I reached the end of the demo, I think I had to save a nude woman who was being held captive near some dimensional portal. This is really bugging me. I got to find this.

      @jonathonfrazier6622 Месяц назад

      @OldAndNewVideoGames No, it wasn't. I just checked them out on your suggestion. But you got the right idea. Definitely that sort of game. What I can say is the graphics more closely resembled Eye of the Beholder but like Ishar, the characters are arranged at the bottom of the screen rather than to the right. My father tells me I will not find it, when I asked why he said that it would have been a rather obscure title and a bit clumsy. I guess he thinks other games in the genre to be more superior. It was a game he had on a demo disk when I was a kid in the 90s. Although I dont know how old the game was at the time. I sincerely appreciate your help. EDIT: I will definitely check out other games in these two series to see if a particular game in the series is the game in question.
