Another tip, Citi will not approve you if you have 0 balances on your cards, I know this when I got denied the first time for the Custom Cash at the beginning of the year.
Mark you are honestly the best, i always look forward to hearing your stories and the credit cards that you apply for and why you do it. I am happy that you were able to transfer for your card even though you weren’t able to get the bonus
Wow! I never thought I would see that happen... You getting denied for a card that I just got approved for? Wow! I thought it would have been the opposite LOL. When I got approved for the card, I was absolutely shocked as I was expecting to be denied.
I figured we’d hear about you applying for this card. It’s a shame you weren’t able to get it. I would have enjoyed hearing your opinion on the Admirals Club membership.
I got it anyway via product change 😁 (MileUp > Executive). I've had the Executive before in past years when I used Admirals Clubs very frequently. I'm a big fan of the AA club network for (a) lack of overcrowding (b) more quiet / business environment (c) relaxing (d) being productive. Historically, they've been awful for food (they're known for cheese cubes and veggie sticks w/ hummus 😂 But now this should be changing as AA is rolling out a new club design w/ elevated food offerings.
I think the number one issue you’re running into is the recent accounts and inquiries. Citi is very sensitive to those and having more than 0 or 1 of either within the last 6 months is a huge no go for them. I just experienced this myself and am going to wait another month before reapplying so my accounts and inquiries age out a bit
I think you're right. However, I'd disagree on saying even 1 inquiry or recently opened account in the past 6 months is a "huge no go for them." Of the 7 Citi cards I've gotten over the years, a number of them were obtained with higher numbers than that. I've seen data points on both sides, so I cannot say how often or how strictly they enforce this kind of "rule."
Same thing happened to me mark. Applied last month for citi premier and got instantly denied. Reconsideration line said I have to wait until mailed letter (no email). Then weird denial reasons in the letter and when I call recon line they instantly denied me with no reason or and not even giving any opportunity to change their mind. /'
Wish I had seen this video before applying with Citi and getting my excellent FICO score dinged. I think Citi only wants customers who they think cannot pay.
Same thing happened to me when i applied for a personal elevated offer on the Citi platinum aa card. Tempted to apply for the business version but i doubt they will approve me. When i called the reconsideration they were strict and rude. Basically like did you read the letter? The ketter is the reason have a nice day good bye.
@@MarkReese same as yours. Except what was odd was that their was a different score used. Something like from 1-9900 and I had a 9025 and was denied. 8 inquiries on Experian and 6 new cards in 12 months. Tried last year with 2 inquires and no new cards in 48 months and still denied for custom cash.
Sorry this happened Mark. You win a lot. You lose some. Just the name of the game. I have Citi double cash, Custom Cash, Premier and AA Business card. I applied about 6 month to a year apart between those cards. (Because I was busy applying Amex and others) And I put a lot of spend on them, especially the Custom Cash. Never carried a balance but I constantly spend up to the limit each month. (limits are 6k to 20k in those cards) Not only do they send me new card offer letters but they constantly ups my spending limits. So I say put some time in between applications, (Doesn't have to be as long as a year like me but 6 month or so) and put some expenses on their cards. But What Do I know. You have more cards than me! Thanks for the video!
Great Video. Is there an easy way to confirm my utilization prior to applying for a CITI card? Also, if denied do they keep the application open for a few months and you can have it reviewed again, or must you reapply with another hard pull?
Hey Mark, I had gotten approved. Citi said my Experian score was 726 and I had 23 inquires prior to the application. I also have 3 personal and 1 business card with Citibank. Maybe my datapoints would intrigue you lol.
@@SleepCycle1 yeah I went hard last year with apps. Most of them will drop off by the end of the year and the middle of next year. Then I should be in good graces with Chase.

Thanks for making this video, great info. I've had 1 citi card open for the last four years. Also I am guilty of minimum spend on it. Few charges every month or 2 to keep it active. Iam curious on the new citi cards mentioned and also watching the Marriott and MGM partnership. See if it's a good time to jump on one of the Marriott cards.
Mark, do a credit union savings secured loan (the higher the amount the better). Pay it down 90% before it starts reporting. You’ll get that 90% back into your savings account to put back on a credit card (if that’s you funded the loan). Then call and ask to setup auto payment for next 24mos. This should eliminate your loan issue. Plenty of videos here on RUclips explaining the Navy Fed “pledge loan hack”, but it can done at all credit unions
I would normally suggest lowering credit limits prior to applying to improve exposure, but lord knows their algorithms are a mystery and it probably wouldn't matter. Not to mention that, unlike Chase, Citi doesn't allow you to simply reallocate credit lines. I'm already preparing for the Strata cards. I've been gardening for a bit. I see people applying for Bilt cards with no bonuses and I'm like "what???" 😅

I don’t think I would ever want more than 2! :) goal would be everyday spending vs my chase ecosystem thx
I don't have a way of knowing exactly how hard / easy it is to get the CCC. If your goal is to maximize everyday spend with up to 2 cards, then the CCC is a fantastic option 🏆
Mark, I have a question. Do you think it'll affect me negatively if I get approved for a credit card before applying for a car loan? And since I've never had a car loan before, do you have an idea how much of a hit I'll take acquiring the loan for a car? I'm sitting around a 750 credit score.
Potentially, yes. Getting a car loan will likely be more focused on the credit "range," (example: as long as you're between 700-740, then your APR on a car loan will be the same regardless of what the exact score is). However, a new inquiry will likely drop your score temporarily. If that drop results in falling from a higher range to a lower range, then yes, you could end up paying a higher interest rate on that car. Regardless, I'd personally avoid all credit card applications before things like auto loans, mortgages, personal loans, etc. The credit card game is secondary to financial responsibility & winning the money game overall.
