The problem with salicylic acid is that it dries the skin, which increases oil production, and the problem with sunscreen is that it plugs the pores. Any alternatives?
There is another condition that looks a lot like sebaceous filaments, known as trichostasis spinulosa. It appears as tiny black dots on the nose, that, in reality, are irregular shedding of vellus hairs from the follicles, causing a collection of multiple hairs stuck together in one follicle. Not a lot of people talk about this condition, and I believe it needs more light shed on it. If your sebaceous filaments are BLACK and not AMBER/BROWN/WHITE and upon close inspection look like little hair-like projections, then, you may have trichostasis spinulosa! Dr. Dray made a great video about it & the treatment options differ A LOT from blackheads and sebaceous filaments❤
Oh my god thank you so much for this! I've been dealing with these black dots on my nose since my teens and I'm 23yo this year. I've been using exfoliating acids since 2020 on and off, but these black dots have always been persistent. Recently, I noticed that my nose has been clearer than before however those black dots are still there, and I noticed that I've been able to get rid of my sebaceous filaments which resulted in a clearer nose appearance, so those black dots are definitely not SE and they don't respond to acne treatments. Definitely gonna be buying pore strips and use them once a week now, cheers!
I found the CeraVe SA (salicylic acid) cleanser to be PHENOMENAL. I use an oil cleanser, then use the CeraVe and my skin....especially my nose...has NEVER been better. I'm no longer embarrassed by my nose and make up now, goes on SO smooth. I'm 41 and my skin is beautiful now!

I’ve struggled with sebaceous filaments since early teens and it got really bad around 25. I developed dry skin and a ton of SFs, that I couldn’t even wear makeup. I tried a ton of products in the past 3 years, based on your videos, and finally this is the only combination that works for me: PM routine 1) The Inkey List - Oat Cleansing Balm 2) CeraVe - SA cleasner 3) The Ordinary - Glycolic acid toner 4) Purito - Dermide sleeping pack This alone does magic for my skin! When I change even a single step, my pores are all filled up and look horrible. AM routine is nothing fancy: 1) Water 2) Niacinamide cream (Right now Purito Deep Sea water) 3) Frudia SPF 50
I love how your AM routine reminded me of very younger me 😂 Kept it extremely simplified when I was starting out & caring to have my face at least water cleansed & moisturized with an SPF factor (Back then Olay’s Daily Moisturizer Lotion SPF 15 with Vitamin A, C & E was my all-time favorite 😂☺️ till I stopped seeing it in stores and years later already grown was it back up again).
Did you find a way to remove them in the first place? I use SA, AHA and retinol, but the problem is that the filament doesn't magically dissolve. I have them all over my t-zone
the glow recipe bha serum changed my skin! it has salicylic acid, niacinamide and azelaic acid as well as gentle ahas. this plus double cleansing has made a huge difference

I use the globac cleanser which has salycilic acid AND glycolic acid. Its like a gel cleanser. So, will my cleanser do the work as salycilic acid or do i still need a serum? So, as my cleanser already has these two acids, will it be ok to still use one of these acid serums at the same routine? PLZ ANSWER
Hi! :) Can I ask does it dry the skin and also how do you use it - mornings, evenings, after cleansing with another product, in combination with face cream? I'm trying to make a routine plan based on the video and concidering my super dry skin.
Omg! I went to high school with you, what a cool surprise to see you pop up on my feed right when I needed this video the most!! I hope all is well on your end. Stay cool, you lovely lady you~
I use olive oil and mineral oil mixed together. Rub into your skin and wipe off gently with a very warm, wet washcloth, it works really, really well. Hold the washcloth on your face for a few seconds before you wipe off the oil. Also, do it right before you put your makep on, it cleans out the pores and moisterizes your skin. The best way to remove oil is with oil, not alcohol or by trying to dry it up. I'm telling you, do this once or twice a day for a whiile, it works!
This was so validating! I thought pore trips were the only way to get rid of them! 😂 I've started a gentle skincare routine with adapalene and the cetaphil SA cleanser and can't wait to see the results. I found the cerave cleanser too stripping, but this one is refreshing! I appreciate that you mention cruelty free options 💜
I don't wear makeup, but using a cleansing balm reduced my SFs so much! I do a single cleanse with a balm that's strong enough (contains enough emulsifier) to rinse off completely and leave no oily residue. I massage it thoroughly into my skin without water, especially over my nose and chin, and I start adding water with the massage a little at a time. After about a minute, I rinse. I make my own cleansing balm with cheap carrier oils, castor oil, emulsifying wax, and cetyl alcohol or stearic acid, plus a little kaolin clay for exfoliation that's so gentle you can't even feel it.
If you wear sterling silver jewelry and use sulfur make sure you either have a good cleaner or just take it off. Turned my favorite necklace black and then it started irritating my skin :(
If you put clear nail polish on silver it won’t turn colors as quickly and it shouldn’t bother your skin if your used to nail polish at all (I have sensitive and acne prone skin)
My doctor told me to add iodine drops to my diet or take kelp supplement once a week. They took awhile to go away but have never come back. My sister used to get them on her scalp every few months. She takes kelp supplements (2 a week of 500mg) and hers are all gone.
I think a video discussing identifying blackheads, vs sebaceous filaments, vs trichostasis spinulosa is the best first step for everyone. Once identified, they can start to experiment and target their condition via the proper therapies.

I just realized what was working for my skin! I used to wear makeup every day at my office job. 2yrs ago, I started a job in a rail yard and haven't worn makeup. Since im not wearing makeup, I wasn't using an oil cleanser, and for the past 2yrs my skin has been full of sebum! The oil was dissolving the filaments! I've been using the gel and sa cleanser for 2 years now consistently, and I haven't managed to get them out in the first place (I have them only under my chin). The other day i decided to do something I'd usually never do: i took a fresh, clean korean italy towel (red) and GENTLY rubbed below my mouth up and down (not circular) to remove the sebaceous filaments (they pilled on the towel like crazy). I followed up with my favorite for damaged skin: LRP baume. I did this 3 weeks ago and have since kept my skin care like before (SA cleanser, double cleansing sometimes, etc). They have not returned, and I can now keep them at bay with the methods you recommended. Just to get them out, I had to be a bit... aggressive 😂
Cass! Please I’d beg for a video on Sebum plugs / keratin plugs/ closed comedones idk what these are but NOTHING seems to help. It’s like small white rice like seeds that stay under the skin. Please do a video on this topic and how to treat them because nothing has helped so far. SA/ Glycolic Acid/ Tret none. Oh my goodness! @makeupbymonicaa (Monica Ravichandran) sung your praises in a video (9 mos ago) regarding your recommendation of the purple onion Korean sunscreen by Isntree. I am so glad I found your channel! About 3 months ago started taking better care of my 52 year old skin. I adopted a routine containing niacinamide serum, a vitamin c moisturizer (vit c ester) and a weekly treatment of glycolic and lactic acid. I have been using one a few times a week but I think I need to use it every night. Will try! Can't wait to watch more of your videos! Thank you!
I get those on my chin, feels rough and bumpy like a beard and no matter wut I do they never go away! So frustrating, thats the only area on my face to, u can’t see em, but I can feel them!
Cass!!! This isn’t related to this video but I had to share with you!! You got me hooked on the Medature PSL moisturizer and it’s the ONLY one that will immediately get rid of my retinization. I just ran out and went to go stock up and reorder and I noticed they have a new version!! Have you tried it and is it any better than the original?! It’s the PSL 2! My thinking is the original is perfection and you can’t get any better than that one, so I guess we’ll see lol I bought the original and the new one.
Yes! It doesn't matter how clear the rest of my face is, underneath my bottom lip in between my chin is always full of bumps and clogged pores. And right around my nostrils. It will look completely clear one day, then they all show up again a cpl days later if I sweat at.all or wear makeup. I can only wear tinted CC cream now bc seems like everything breaks me out these days.

Hello, question I do have oily skin and my pours are exactly what this video is about my skin tone is like that of bronze, copper color what cleanser and what lotion or whatever should I use on a daily process?
Thank you for the breakdown. Can you do a video or let us know what is the best body lotion with spf? The Cera V makes my skin whitish and chalky. I love the tinted face lotion Cera V has. Different price points would be amazing since I am on a budget.
Same. Tried everything, so many products and gadgets… nothing works. Salicylic acid, retinoids, retinol, AHA, BHA, Niacinamide… masks, scrubs, treatments, wash, and those freaking porestrips.
What is your opinion on Natrium's retinol complex serum? Personally I really like it for my skin. I found that tretinoin was way too intense for me, but the price tags on other OTC retinol serums were a little out of my price range. I found that it helped tremendously with some super fine lines I was starting to experience. But I would love to hear your professional opinion on their product!
Ive been using SA cerave cleanser but honestly its only making my nose drier and flaky on the sides but still greasy and the sebaceous filaments are still there
What sunscreens do you recommend for people with darker skin?. Finding a sunscreen that doesn't have a white cast is kinda hard. Also, do you think there are any sunscreen substitutes?
I’ve done some massages couple of time but it really breaks me out specifically on the nose😢 so this part its not my favorite, but i have all products that you’ve mentioned from the Ordinary so hopefully will be better soon 😅
Cassandra, I'm a male in my 30s and never did skin care before...other than a daily lotion after showers...I have started using Caldera Lab's Routine, Cleanser (the clean slate) in the morning/ before shower then The base Layer after shower. I use their serum (The Good at night before bed).. Do you know of anyone who uses this to combat Sebaceous Filaments on their nose? I've noticed my skin after 1 month does look healthier and some of the pores on my nose have (maybe gotten smaller) but they are def still there. What are your thoughts? Also this routing is rather expensive. I looked for the names of the things you said I needed to help combat and they were not in there.. but maybe something else in there does the same thing?
I get excellent results with a sulfur based product called Rezamid from Somers Labs. I use it at night and it has reduced my filaments tremendously. Bonus it comes with a tint adjuster if you want to wear it as a medicated makeup during the day.
I have a hard time with sun screen because I always get sunscreen in my eyes. Can you recommend a good, sweat proof sunscreen? Im in menopause and I always sweat.
i did oil pulling with 2 different cleansing oils and both times it broke me out HORRENDOUSLY and it took 2-3 weeks for all the pimples to be gone. i'll try that korean centella oil now tho...
What can you do if smoking IS the cause?? I think that explains it for me, since I take pretty good care of my skin. Is there anything aside from quitting, that would help out?
Are there any options that don't heavily carry zinc? I usually have to wear no zinc/no aluminum deodorant, so not sure if same reaction would react on face if used the products you recommended here.
I notice you mentioned Korean brands. What do you think about Korean botox? Korean Glutathione and fillers? I've used the Korean botox (I am an RN and trained in botox and fillers), it seems to work well, but are there any drawbacks or negative side effects? I absolutely love their stem cell line.
Guess I need to get back into doing oil gritting (I did not know it was called that lol, sounds gross tbh). I used to do it and it really does work, just be careful with what the oil you use, when I switched oils, the new one had perfume and ended up making me break out badly, which started my severe acne journey... anyway make sure you use a face skin safe oil.
Ok, so lets say im a person with zero experience in skincare, but with massive sebaceous filament issue. Im not going to pretend that i understood everything the nice lady said in the video, but i got that salicylic acid is would help? Would salicylic acid rubbed into face in the evening for 2 minutes or so work? 😅
Is Dr wong sulfur soap is okay to use for sebaceous filaments? or Dr Sensitive niacinamide salicylic acid soap pls i need answer because i use that now 😢😢😢
Supposedly, it’s said this is more to treat sebaceous filaments, not to remove it. It’s a predisposition gene and/or natural trait on the skin, that’s common. ❤ It’s possible to treat it but it’s really not for removal, that’s known of.’
does anyone else prefer their sfs in comparison to having dry skin? i HATE doing skincare labor so i feel blessed for having sfs and large pores because it means i look 10 years younger than i am without ever using moisturiser
can you use retinol at night and niacinamide and salicylic acid during the day? I've read that they are not compatible so that's why I'm asking. Thanks ^^

Your hairs thickening up Cassandra 🥳
use waxing stripes then squeeze what's ever left from the nose and wash with lukewarm water with soap. works for me.
I get those on my chin, feels rough and bumpy like a beard and no matter wut I do they never go away! So frustrating, thats the only area on my face to, u can’t see em, but I can feel them!
Love all the products you recommended, Cass!!
What about getting rid off white heads in between your chin folds (between your mouth and chin)?
@@NCollins86me too! I mean, I have a bit in other areas of my face, but a LOT between my bottom lip and chin. I don't know why, it doesn't seem more oily than my forehead for example
See I find the pore strips helped
I’ve milia around my eyes, sides of nose and forehead. I just started the Joseon Eye Serum to treat them. Your video about skin filaments is exactly what I have on my nose and chin. I use CosRx snail serum and their hydration cream. Are these CosRx products helpful for my skin? If not what would you suggest? Thank you. I really find your videos helpful.
I'm suffering bad with these on my chin and even nose area. I recently added in SLMD Wipes but I have to use a skin spatula. I use Michelle Corley Oil Cleanser.
I use curology cleanser then follow up with curology moisturizer. When does The Ordinary Niacinamide & Zinc get applied after cleansing or after moisturizing?
Cassie, please divide the video into sections..so I can go back to a certain topic without scrolling left and right? Thank you. 😊
2:08 lol no, not more random purchases
Hello, question I do have oily skin and my pours are exactly what this video is about my skin tone is like that of bronze, copper color what cleanser and what lotion or whatever should I use on a daily process?
Thank you for the breakdown. Can you do a video or let us know what is the best body lotion with spf? The Cera V makes my skin whitish and chalky. I love the tinted face lotion Cera V has. Different price points would be amazing since I am on a budget.
Omg I love you! First vid I've seen of yours. New sub! 🥰💕
as an oily skin large pore girly thank you!!!!!
I've tried everything and my stubborn sebaceous filaments refuse to disappear from my life. They are here to stay.
Same. Tried everything, so many products and gadgets… nothing works. Salicylic acid, retinoids, retinol, AHA, BHA, Niacinamide… masks, scrubs, treatments, wash, and those freaking porestrips.
try subliminals
Only thing works for me to extract them 😭
What is your opinion on Natrium's retinol complex serum? Personally I really like it for my skin. I found that tretinoin was way too intense for me, but the price tags on other OTC retinol serums were a little out of my price range. I found that it helped tremendously with some super fine lines I was starting to experience. But I would love to hear your professional opinion on their product!
What about those cleansing spatulas for vibration to help remove sebum plugs? Any brands?
I was wondering that too
Is Coxir a good brand? I was looking into their Ultra Hyaluronic Cleansing Oil and the Black Rice TXA Pore Purifying Mask
What kind of sunscreen is the best, though? Because I feel like they clogg up in the pores...
What about lactic acid or mandelic acid from ordinary? Would they work similar to salicylic from the ordinary you mentioned in the video?
AHA‘s, like lactic or mandelic acid, exfoliate your skin like BHA‘s but aren‘t oil soluble so they aren‘t gonna dissolve sebaceous filaments.
@@belleepoque2539 thanks
Ive been using SA cerave cleanser but honestly its only making my nose drier and flaky on the sides but still greasy and the sebaceous filaments are still there
What sunscreens do you recommend for people with darker skin?. Finding a sunscreen that doesn't have a white cast is kinda hard. Also, do you think there are any sunscreen substitutes?
Me too, I’m about to start using the de la Cruz 10% sulfur. Hopefully it works
Hi! Can I use the oil first and then the salicylic cleanser after?
Would a Foreo work too?
Also, if you’re super sensitive to SA, which of those other ingredients would be best?
TIA ❤
What order do we use these products in? The order in which they are mentioned?
I get excellent results with a sulfur based product called Rezamid from Somers Labs. I use it at night and it has reduced my filaments tremendously. Bonus it comes with a tint adjuster if you want to wear it as a medicated makeup during the day.
from my experience retinods helped with my acne scars
I have a hard time with sun screen because I always get sunscreen in my eyes. Can you recommend a good, sweat proof sunscreen? Im in menopause and I always sweat.
It gets into my eyes too!
My eyes!!!! 😭 🔥
SA toner did a great job for me + I always use retinols
i did oil pulling with 2 different cleansing oils and both times it broke me out HORRENDOUSLY and it took 2-3 weeks for all the pimples to be gone. i'll try that korean centella oil now tho...
Are there any good sunscreens for people with oily skin? Im not really sure what to look for and have only just started to get into skincare 😅
How often do you do the oil gritting?...I can't seem to find the video on the full skincare routine
Guess I need to get back into doing oil gritting (I did not know it was called that lol, sounds gross tbh).
I used to do it and it really does work, just be careful with what the oil you use, when I switched oils, the new one had perfume and ended up making me break out badly, which started my severe acne journey... anyway make sure you use a face skin safe oil.
please review the 'new' medicube age R booster. I want to get it but want extra information and I trust you :) Thank youuuuuuu
Can you use the Bliss Genius AND the Ordinary Salicylic Acid drops? Or choose between one or the other ?
Ok, so lets say im a person with zero experience in skincare, but with massive sebaceous filament issue.
Im not going to pretend that i understood everything the nice lady said in the video, but i got that salicylic acid is would help? Would salicylic acid rubbed into face in the evening for 2 minutes or so work? 😅
How about lemon juice for dissolving sebaceous filaments removal?
Cassandra, you look beautiful! 🥰
Great video! Great recommendations
So I need like 15 products…..”There is an idea of a Patrick Bateman”
Cassandra, could you make a video about make up foundation or cream, which has ingredients fpor acne prone skin?
Is Dr wong sulfur soap is okay to use for sebaceous filaments? or Dr Sensitive niacinamide salicylic acid soap pls i need answer because i use that now 😢😢😢
Supposedly, it’s said this is more to treat sebaceous filaments, not to remove it. It’s a predisposition gene and/or natural trait on the skin, that’s common. ❤ It’s possible to treat it but it’s really not for removal, that’s known of.’
Will The Agency regimen help with sebaceous filaments? Started 6 was ago for rosacea but my pores are more prominent than ever!
Thank you so much for sharing!❤️❤️❤️
does anyone else prefer their sfs in comparison to having dry skin? i HATE doing skincare labor so i feel blessed for having sfs and large pores because it means i look 10 years younger than i am without ever using moisturiser
No! Not at all. Maybe it’s psychological, but knowing gunk is in my face I want it out. Makes me crazy.
i think i understand? like the type of people who get freaked out by their eyelash mites?
can you use retinol at night and niacinamide and salicylic acid during the day? I've read that they are not compatible so that's why I'm asking. Thanks ^^
Yes, that works. Just don't forget to use sunscreen in the morning. Retinol is known for making your skin vulnerable to light-
Hey dear what about the Nutricentials Here you glow toner? Thank you
Some recommendations of korean products with sulfur, please?
I really enjoyed this video!
