Making chloroform so I can sleep better at night

  • Today I make chloroform to help me sleep better at night. Who would have thought this works so well! All jokes aside, this should not be recreated and is actually a carcinogen and not to be messed around with as phosgene production can happen from chloroform degradation. Let me know what you want next! Enjoy!

    To address a few things:
    1. There is a lot of SARCASM in this video. If you actually think I am going to use this as a sleep aid, you are wrong. All jokes! It is a carcinogen (cancer-causing, damage to organs, etc). This means you should not repeat what you see in this video. Chemistry can be a very dangerous hobby and it can injure or cause death if you don't know what you're doing. So please leave all the crazy shit to me!
    2. Chloroform is a very useful solvent in chemistry. Everyone thinks its use is to kidnap people, but it is quite bad. It takes like 5 minutes of continuous breathing to do so. Though the jokes about it are quite funny (I love degenerate humor). Many people commented, "why would you show potential malicious people how to make it? ". My response is that anything shown in the chemistry world could be used badly. Malicious people will cause harm no matter what. This information is already readily available in organic chemistry courses everywhere. Knowledge is a gift and I have no malicious intent. You shouldn't either. BE GOOD BOYS AND GIRLS!!
    3. I am taking all safety steps in my videos. The garage I perform my experiments are all ventilated and opened so that airflow is constantly circulating. I have respirators, goggles, etc. A fume hood will (hopefully) be built soon and I can do even crazier things! Although my lab techniques may be a little frantic and crazy, I do try my best to research and make sure everything is correct beforehand!
Thank you all for watching and subscribing. It means the world to me. Chemistry is so fascinating yet it always gets a bad taste in people's mouths cause school makes it boring. Hopefully, I can make it slightly more entertaining!

When you've poured hard to replace stuff in open sep funnel enough, you learn the habit of always putting a beaker (or whatever container) under the sep funnel before you pour. You'll need the container anyway and doing it first can save you from trouble. Especially when you pour something that has a week worth work behind it, you'll love to see it go in the container instead of table or fume hood floor and then trying to extract it from there back.

When I was 20 and freshly moved out of home, I bought a toaster oven for my new apartment. I did not know that the heating elements had manufacturing gunk on them, and when I started it, it smoked something awful. Freaked me the fuck out. So I did what any panicked twenty year old would do, and took it back to the store to swap for a different one....which also did the same thing.

I work in HVAC and we deal with phosgene all the time. You see, when an air conditioner or heat pump's compressor burns out, it will take some of the refrigerant with it and when it does it converts into phosgene gas(you can also do the same by burning it). It smells like STRONG acetic acid and it's enough to run you out of an area before you get enough in your lungs to do much. The reason so many people were killed due to phosgene was that they were trapped in foxholes with bullets firing over their heads so they had no choice but to breathe the stuff. If you didn't have that, you'd run like crazy from it.....and we do though thankfully we're usually outside anyway so it's never been a concern.

When I was younger, I was trying to make TNT. I mixed the three ingredients. Note that I was trying to make TNT in bulk like 250 to 300 g. I knew my ingredients list was correct because I had made it before in the amount of a few grams.
As you indicated, he is bad.
I started making the solution and started mixing. I was using a bottle with a screw top. I left the container cap loose, but not loose enough. The ingredients got extremely hot and some of the toluene started evaporating at a rate, much faster than he could escape through the cat. The container blew up in my hands and left the two dangerous acids and toluene all over me. Fortunately, I had a lab coat and goggles so I was OK. But the experience was extremely scary and to this day I have PTSD over that.

I miss the times when chloroform could be bought at a local pharmacy. It's a great bonding agent for many plastics (including car bumpers). Maybe one day I'll take a shot at making a small quantity. I had a 20ml bottle and it went gluing and gluing, and was half full last time I used it (the remainder evaporated over a few years on the shelf)
