    This route starting from the halobenzene is much cleaner and higher yielding than attempting nitration of phenol directly (the route pyrotechnical chose.) I've only ever seen this done with the chlorobenzene reagent; no idea what your side products were with the bromobenzene starting point. It would be useful to get a melting point on a small quantity and some other form of characterization.

      The bromo group is an election withdrawing group (a weak deactivating group), so this reaction is more controllable. The phenolic hydroxyl group is an electron donating group (thus, a strong activating group) on the other hand, so electrophilic aromatic substitution reactions with it happen a lot more readily. Thus, multiple additions to the ring are more prevalent when you have strongly activating substitutes.
      For example, the bromination of aniline always gives a mixture of brominated products even when only one equivalent of bromine is used because the amino group is such a strong activating group. It’s almost impossible to get the mono-brominated aniline derivative in good yield when using bromine with aniline directly. You’d have to convert the strong activating group into a weaker activating group before doing the bromination. Hope this helps!

      It's not exactly what its name suggests. Of course it can blow your face apart in certain conditions, but I can tell you it's not worth the efforts to make it, if you're not a medical laboratory assistant.
      Toluene is a very similar molecule to start with, the end product can fulfill your expectations, while being much safer than TNP.
      I see that more and more videos on how to make dangerous explosive substances are being uploaded to this platform, but the average level of morals is sinking very quickly. It's not being taught in high schools how to make explosives at home on purpose. The same principle applies to poisons and drugs. I don't know what's worse, to die from the side effects of some carelessly synthetised recreational drugs, or to be exploded, because a low-minded uploader forgot to mention some details, word by word.
      Morals can't be taught, and there will always be idiots.

      If someone wants to make those things they don’t really need to watch a YT video to do so. There’s archives, Sciencemadness threads, etc. for all of those things. They’re all extremely easy to find through a simple google search. It might not be taught in high school, but that stuff has been taught in university level organic chemistry courses. It’s found in organic chemistry textbooks as well. College students are capable of doing dumb, and terrible things as well (though obviously not as much as high school students because of the greater maturity of college students). Besides, the preparation of the most dangerous energetics (acetone peroxide and ETN) are not really found on YT.
      Picric acid is actually relatively stabile on its own as well when compared to other energetics (it’s a secondary energetic not a primary). It’s not as shock, heat, or friction sensitive as the primaries are. The sensitivity is a little more than that of 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene. It’s the salts of it that are very sensitive primary energetics; they are readily formed on prolonged contact with metals which is why it’s not used anymore. That’s also why some sources say it’s extremely sensitive; samples contaminated with its salts are quite sensitive. This shouldn’t be an issue for anyone who decides to experiment with it (not that I’d recommend it though) since it will most like be contained in a glass, or ideally a plastic vessel (if they are careful it should be kept damp for extra redundant security). It probably wouldn’t be stored in a metal container.
      Anyway, scientific info shouldn’t be restricted because people do dumb, and terrible things. They will always find a way to do so regardless of how hard you try to stop them by controlling info. Also, many people get into chemistry by learning about that kind of stuff which is a good thing. The regulation this kind of scientific info doesn’t really do any good.
      Even with fission weapons the regulation of the pertaining information isn’t to stop the ordinary fool. It’s to make it harder for small nation states, and organized extremist groups. Even then it’s only a part of the strategy. The main part is the control of the components. My point is you aren’t going to stop an ordinary person from making something by controlling the info when the required chemicals are either readily available, or easily made from other readily available chemicals. It’s just not going to do any good.

    One could also just allow the dinitrobromobenzene to just sublimate into an upsidedown beaker with some ice or something cold on the beaker.
    Though I honestly have no idea if this would actually purify the product or if there would be any loss or side/tertiary reactions.

      Put in alkaline conditions (soluble in aqueous), wash with dcm to get out impurities and filter things that didn’t dissolve in either. Then acidify the aqueous, and extract with DCM!

    Just trying to remember my ochem... This reaction stops at DNP because each addition of a nitro group makes the ring more electron-deficient, and electron-rich rings are the ones that are able to attack the nitronium ion? Is this why the reaction took so long?

    • @ashe1.070
      @ashe1.070 2 дня назад

      Yeah, it can definitely progress to the trinitrated product; it just takes a lot more energy for each subsequent addition to the ring.

  • @francisnaveen9041
    @francisnaveen9041 3 дня назад

    Is there any way to make the two nitrations go simultaneously or within the first reaction mixture?
    Also, why bother to wash the first product multiple times because the second reaction has the same conditions as the first?

    • @Mulmgott
      @Mulmgott 2 дня назад

      Because with nitration you have to very carefully control the temperature so you don't get 3 Nitro groups on the benzene ring. It is easier this way i suppose. Thats how we did it in my O-Chem lab practice aswell.

    It's very strange and interesting that Pyrotechnical uploaded his video on the same subject around six hours before you.
    Anyways, nitrates shouldn't be consumed by humans at all. If I have to explain the why's, it's enough to think about the destruction nitric acid can do to the skin or any organic materials. Also (mono) nitroglycerine has serious effects in the human body, so nitrates should be avoided if possible.

      The whole discipline of pharmacology is about giving toxic, lethal or radioactive substances to humans, just in small doses. The same goes for anesthesia, certain cosmetic procedures (botox), etc. Your argument should go beyond "it does damage". The dose matters, as do other factors.
