Living with Prawn Farmers in a Remote Jungle | Blood, Sweat And Takeaways S1 Ep3

- Six young British food consumers go to live and work alongside the workers in Indonesia's prawn industry. They are surprised to find themselves on a farm, not by the sea.
When it comes to food, we are spoilt for choice. From top class restaurants to low cost supermarkets, we take it for granted that we can buy whatever food we want, whenever we want it. But would we feel the same if we knew the human cost of food production?
Six typical young British food consumers go to live and work alongside the millions of people in south east Asia's food production industries. They must catch, harvest and process food products that we eat every day, seeing behind the scenes of the tuna, prawns, rice and chicken industries for the very first time.
They eat, sleep and live with food workers in the poorest regions of Indonesia and Thailand, surviving on the same wages. The average wage for food workers here is around three pounds a day.
The Brits arrive in Kalimantan, Indonesia to live and work alongside the workers in the prawn industry. Their home is a shack in the jungle with no beds, no TV and no running water and dinner is what you can catch. Instead of fishing for prawns in the ocean, the Brits are surprised to find themselves waist deep in mud working on a prawn farm.
For these six young consumers, biting into a prawn mayo sandwich will never be the same again, but the group is given a glimmer of hope with the arrival of a British farmer to join their team.

I think Manos's father needs to send him back to Bangladesh without money for 5 years to knock his arrogance and laziness out of him.
😂😂😂
I agree, he can brake bricks here manually by hand and hammer and get $1 for every 100pcs
I think a lot of people in Britain could do with this wake up call 😅
All I've learned from these episodes is that Manos is an absolute horrific brat
Manos is never going to be able to be better than his father unless he expresses some gratitude and his work ethic improves drastically.
Agreed
Give time hew will change.
The world as change
Totally agree 👍
Manos and Olu's family should have send them back home for a visit every summer, maybe that might help them appreciate things
I am from a 3rd world country and this experience would be tough none the less. However these bratts simply lack good manners and respect. Am sure even if they got sent back home for holidays they would just just go there and act like they are better than everyone else.
Nani’s is way worse than Olu.
Josh is honestly such a good man, so empathetic and kind 💗 Bless his heart and soul
Good for Josh realizing the most precious thing in life is his family. He has come for far.
Manos seems to look down on his father, without him, he’d probably be working in a factory back in Bangladesh.
Ooo I love crab! It’s quite expensive here in the uk so it’s not something I eat often. They’re lucky having some fresh crab! And they’re complaining? I think the food looked delicious and I would certainly eat it after she went to the effort of catching cooking and sharing her food with them. They need to have more bloody respect and gratitude. Those people are sharing their homes and food with them! They don’t have much but are kind enough to share so stop being spoiled and insulting their kindness
Totally agree
I know right. They offered them a place to sleep but not happy with their food 😕.
Brats and selfish no gratitude
They were appallingly disrespectful. Ashamed to be British😢😮
Yes you love crab. Doesn't mean other people do. If given a food I don't eat I won't eat it either.
Please keep the camera on Josh and James. These two are good for humanity. I can’t careless about the others.
I think Josh is great. Hats off Josh👏👏
Josh and James both pay their own way .their jobs r at opposite ranges but they earn their money and don't give up and whine like Manos.
By opposite ranges, do you mean that James’ family, as farmers, own their own business and Josh is an employee in someone else’s business? Or are you saying that Josh is white-collar since he works in a bank and James is blue-collar because he’s just a farmer? My husband and I are farmers. We run an 8000- acre, multimillion-dollar operation. Does that make us blue-collar workers because it’s a farm? Curious as to your thought processes.
@@schatzeeone6230 what I mean is that even though their jobs r very different and so the money earned could b too they both pay their own bills
I would’ve given my wage to the family that put them up.
@Harshit Kapoor I have yes.
@Harshit Kapoor no Qs to ask.
Me too
Josh comes across as the star of the show.
I don't think any of them are bad, they all tried.
Bless the locals for their kindness and cheerful attitude in difficult conditions.
Also with the money they made I honestly wldnt of went and bought takeaway i wld of honestly helped the ppl they stayed with and that guy that just wants to make it back with his family!
You said exact same thing as me ..id feel awful spending it on a take away when those people are struggling to live ..their so selfish
I thought the exact same thing. If they put all of their money together it'd almost be enough for that guy to go back home. Instead it was spent on some fries and nuggets that you digest in 2 hours, I'm a huge foodie and I still would have gave back to the farmers
@Harshit Kapoor yes I know of it ...ive seen people travel there ...
@Harshit Kapoor sorry no I don't
@@luckyirish7277 hi bruv. I just checked out the link you put up and I feel deeply humbled after watching where you live and the conditions you and your family must endure to keep going day by day, full respect to you my friend. I live in Australia and if you are unemployed here the government gives us $356aud a week for not doing absolutely anything to get that. I just wish you're government would help you people more out bcoz after watching you're link I feel like I live like a king in comparison and I feel really bad about it now knowing people like you must wish you had just a little bit more. Full respect to you brother. Do you have electricity in your house? What happens when the weather gets really hot or cold? 🇦🇺
I wanna know if they learned anything from this trip. I want to know how they are now. This looks like it was filmed 10 yrs ago.
Near enough, it was aired in n 2009!
It's overwhelming to think of all the daily labor that goes into maintaining our global supply chain. I couldn't really focus on the individual dramas felt by each person as much as just feeling emotionally buried by the big picture of feeding a world approaching 8 billion people.
Love these series, keep them coming!

52:50 James saying everything I’m feeling toward Manos!👋🏽💥
These kids need to get a good look at the real world and have some respect also!
Well they’re definitely in their late 30s or early 40s now
@@ladydede88 all in there 20's - 30's since it is uploaded only a month ago. So I dont think it is filmed 10 - 20yrs ago.😊
@@xxxgaming568 i think it was someone in the comments said it was filimed over 10 years ago
Description says aired 2009 so..
I don’t know how these people were raised, but I thought basic manners and gratitude were fairly universal. If someone opens their home to you, then you thank them. If someone prepares a meal for you, then you eat it and you thank them.
Very well said! 👍
I dont know how they spend that money on rubbish for themselves and not give it to the people they stay with or that young man that just wanted to go home .id feel awful going into a shop and spending it on take aways ..
The first episode, the girls treated their host and gave her the change too
Their money, their choice - no matter what you or other people think.
@@7yorker7 and its our opinion no matter what you or anyone else says ..clearly you have no heart to write that..take it you would have spent the money too
@@luckyirish7277 I hope are giving away your money to someone in need on a regular basis. Because you would be heartless if you didn't.. right?
@@cindy-ml7vo sorry to burst ur your stupid bubble ..I work with a charity and donate on a weekly basis....maybe get out and try it for yourself and humble your mouth
James is a farmer, they have balls, enough said…
I love prawns. But I gotta thank the people who make it possible for me to eat prawns at a relatively affordable price... Seeing this documentary really made me realize that.
Never wished a crocodile could come up and bite someone in the rear so much till I heard manos and his spoilt little rich boy complaints 🤦🏻♀️
😂😂
2 years later and I echoed your thoughts and wishes exactly. Where are all the Crocs when you need them😢?
In UK 80kg of prawns are worth £2,500 .
The indonisian prawn boss gets £20!
And the prawn boss gives the prawn farmer 0. 20 pence
Question - *where* & *who* has the rest of the £2, 480?
And the land owners
When manos was being all complaining about peeling the prawns and saying he hates it is ridiculous, my mom always told me, if you're doing something in a bad mood, not wanting to do it and being all sloppy, you will not get it right, something will go wrong, you have to put some enthusiasm into it, you have to cheer yourself up and do it even if your faking it. I have found it helps and I make less mistakes
It seems like Josh was the only one actually trying before James came!! I rlly dislike Jess you act like its fine to rely on everyone else sry to burst your bubble you wont get anywhere in life!
I like Josh. He just gets on with the task at hand.
She will, relying on others I suppose🤔. Sad
Wahb crab. Thats expensive here in manila. I would love to eat with them :)
James and Josh !!! I love them !
I am glad they felt first hand what its like to be working in such conditions. Definitely an experience!! 🥰🥰🥰
Manos all you have to do is use your hands as much as your gob and you be ok
Despite all these bad comments - my respect to these young people who really try heard to do this work!!!
Manos wishes he could be better than his father but he has to come to the realization that it's only a pipe dream. His parents will and always will 🏃♂️run 🏃rings around him... 🇦🇺
I Think he Would get a serving of humble pie if he spent a couple of months in india
I feel guilty for buying an expensive watch yesterday. That money could've gone to them.
Try to buy fair trade food and products
Nobody died laughing at their faces, when they've heard about crocodiles? I surely did.
I do love how Jess describes herself as someone who won't back away from a challenge and will give her 110%...seems like she has no awareness of herself. I haven't seen a single situation in which she has given even 50% of her effort. If the people all around you call you "Paris" whenever you show up...it's telling you something about yourself.
I find peeling prawns very therapeutic and I don't mind doing that all day long.
Indo dude floating in the boat lifting the big blocks of mud must have the core strength of a god
If I was one of the privlaged in the group all the people I've met along the way talked to and found out what matters the most and what their dreams are I'd make come true and it would b an honor
I feel the same way. They could have so easily made many dreams come true, at little cost to themselves. Disappointing
Manos should take a trip back to his Family's home country and experience daily life and work THERE for awhile. It would help him realise a little more the extreme work his family went through to get him to Europe and through school.
Manos is a child constantly having tantrums. Hope he’s grown up since this was filmed because he’s going be a very unhappy person otherwise.
Manos is so arrogant. He should be humble and grateful. He says he hates monarchy but wants people to treat him like a prince....
I'm indonesian and live in French now. I still don't get how many European still feel unhappy with their easy life.
Exactly!!! Best comment
Manos forgot where he came from before he learned to speak british english and acts as if he has all the luck in the world. Shame on you manos. Youre bringing the immigrants a bad name
I'm sorry for you, you think only England is a country
He was born in London
I'm binge watching all episodes lol 🤣
I already love James
These people are learning so much from this adventure. Good for them!
@Harshit Kapoor no but I often pray for the slums of India
My heart breaks for India and its people deserve better
@Harshit Kapoor what's it like there
@UCd6U-sYIwYaPPB5d8z9lYqg is the country poor because there are not enough exportable assets or because of the government? Or both?
@Harshit Kapoor I watched your vid. So much suffering. And nothing to do! The bordome must drive up abuse and drug use.
Manicus needs to go home. His attitude brings everyone down.
I'd want to know where the boss slept....
I imagine he sleeps on the roof.
This would be a lot more entertaining if the people were remotely likable.
"People think because I'm a girly-girl that I'm high maintenance."
You don't say.🙄😏
They can just rename this whole series “Manos Gives Up”
"Its like, nothing I'd ever eat at home." - girl who lives off sausage rolls. The English equivalent of a 711 hot dog.
Cheers for stereotyping sausage rolls like that. I had a beautiful handmade one a couple of days ago, from a local butcher who slaughters grass reared animals on a local estate, extremely high quality. Nothing like your hot dogs 🤣🤣..
Among the girls Stacy is more steady Nd well mannered .😘
Don't tell me the prawns feed on the toilet stuff 😮
Uh yeah. Prawns are scavengers. That's why they arent on the Kosher list.
Lol. Yeah. What do you think they ate
Of course they don’t. They own tiny water filters and inly eat and drink from those. :)
Exactly
That's what I was thinking.
Kudos to james, we need more of him not them whining people.
This maybe a weird question.
But why doesn't they build concrete or brick wall if they need to be rebuild constantly from mud?
Or bamboo
Maybe they can’t afford the raw materials?
First world WHINING
Manos...........you leave me so angry.... I wonder if he ever grew up into an adult or stayed a manchild.
They are all representatives of own egos🌞
My 15 year old brother can do this and these big men can't ? Wooooow
YOUR A WUUSSS!!!
And they go and eat at McDonalds...
Oh please kill me...
Yes they say ‘ how can locals earn so little as the price of a mac meal ?’ Lol most of the locals haven’t even tried Mac Donald’s cause they can eat much better with 1/3 of that ! Fresh veg and a little meat
Tchoo-nahhh!
I actually Think josh Would do very good in manual Labor jobs
Manos:this is fu***** unacceptable Me:you are fu***** unacceptable
I wonder where these kids are now 12 years later.
The workers probably dont waste their money on mcdonalds.
Manu needs to man up
Scrimps!
I'd just call in sick if this happens to me at home. Guess what even when you are home when you don't show up to work someone else is going to be stuck working your shift. Even if they have just worked all day themselves. I work at a truck stop we never close if someone doesn't show up you just cannot leave. Someone has to be there 24/7.
Prawns wow shrimp in the US I learned something new
Shrimp are more common in the U.S. but they are not the same as prawns. 2 different animals.
@@cindy-ml7vo oh wow thanks I didn’t know that
Manos is never going to survive in this earth without his parents money.
Am I the only one annoyed at the girls for not actually getting in the water and sorting the mud out.
Exactly, they just stand there complaining.
Lauren’s home made cheese cake though!
Manos is very spoilt.
❄️❄️❄️
Man they shouldn’t have wasted that food like just try a piece first , & try to live how the locals live & be humble
None of these videos are in order! I wanna see what happend after the last episode? Is the rest of the series on here?
Hahahaha Hahahaha hahahaha hilarious
what do they teach you in England that you don't
know where shrimp come from…
Seriously?
Jess looks beautiful under every harsh living condition ! You need so much speed , strength and resiliency do do all those basic jobs that I wonder what the poor people do who just cant cut it .Being poor must toughen you up somewhat but I imagine they cant all be prime physical specimens ..
Did they throw the little crabs back?
this is 2021 thing cause i doubt to believe this is how these young adults are
like frl frl
Considering they agreed to coming there in the first place, how dare Manos starts behaving like it's a chore peeling the skin of prawns, not even willing to learn and starts throwing them like they are to blame. I just don't get this type of behavior.
I think m the first koment..
First to spell it that way for sure .

Based on Josh’s cellphone... this was filmed a long long time ago 🤣🤣🤣🤣
What they call basic living wages means enough to keep them alive barely enoughh to stay alive to eat so they can be aslave the bext day. Thisbis the same as Slave labor. Some slaves are treated better than this.
the episodes are not right, I've watched the first and second available on their page and James is already there, the episode where the other guy left I can't even find...any help?
Yeah its just how they've uploaded it :/ i guess gotta watch it on tv for the proper sequence? Idk
They’re just uploading it backwards. So you would watch from most recent to the latest.
They do that with all their series. It's super annoying
