hello mr bruff i wanted to say that because of your videos on gcse english literature poetry and other videos i got a grade 8 and now iam watching your videos for english language so i want to say thank you very much for all this amazing helpful videos your videos are far beyond great!!
Mr bruff could you please make a vedeo on how to structure your paragraphs and how to start them and also more things for unseen poetry and how to structure love and relationship questions with examples
when you open the paper. spend 5 mins reading the text. spend another 5 boxing off seperate parts of the texts for specific questions and then write sub headings for each paragraph. this allows you to have a good idea of what each paragraph is about. also mark the points of where the exposition, rising action, climax and resolution are. then write the time allocated for each question above the question u are answering. so if im answering question 2 i will write 10 mins from above that question and if you want to write the exact minute you want to fiish the question make sure you dont go overboard. also remeber to always pick write a story AND NEVER pick write about the image because thats wayyyyy harder.
F - firstly, how does the 1st paragraph draw the reader in A - a change in focus, how does the text shift from character to settings etc T - time, a change in time, flashbacks flashforwards etc E - ending, how does the text end, cyclical structure? etc
Here are some useful questions to ask: What is the first thing the writer wants me to think about? Does this create a specific mood? How does the beginning of the text prepare the reader for what is to come? What initial impressions are established regarding mood, setting, and characters? In what order are events or ideas presented in the text? How does this order influence the reader’s understanding or engagement? Are there any noticeable shifts in time, location, or perspective? How do these shifts impact the reader's interpretation or experience of the text? How do structural elements contribute to the build-up of tension or focus in the text? How does the structure of the text reveal or conceal character development? How do structural choices impact the reader’s empathy or understanding of characters? How does the text conclude, and what is the impact of this ending? Does the ending leave the reader with questions or is it more resolved? What elements of the structure contribute most significantly to the text’s overall impact?

This has helped me soooo much !! Currently a y10 doing this paper soon , this has helped me more than any lesson at school , just got to practice now !! Update: I got 61/80!! What dropped me a few marks was the creative writing
Definitely not going to be late to school because I forgot to revise and u are my saviour I’m also lazy af I pray for those who have to do the gcse today I just had several panic attacks
Can someone mark my work ? At the beginning of the extract, the writer focuses at Brightly's situation: he is extremely famished and tired. This is intended to make the reader feel somewhat sympathetic towards Brightly, and overall intrigued in what will happen next. In the middle of the extract, the writer now shifts the focus on to Brightly's home. He lives in a cave, this also keeps the reader interested in Brightly's routine in his cave. (Idk what to write for the end)
Simple - the commenter, mma, uses first person perspective to give the reader insight into the protagonist's feeling by opening with the powerful simple sentence "I hate this question so much," which effectively shows the mounting pressures and difficulties faced by the impending exams. The text ends with multiple question marks to express their innermost toil and puzzlement. This leaves the reader with a clear understanding of the bewildering challenges faced by the gutsy student. Also, the clear pseudonym choice of the writer, "mma", may hint to their outlook that life is a battle, regardless of the arena. (The psuedonym point might be a bridge too far! 😁)
A good structure to use (separate paragraphs for each) “In the beginning of the extract…” “In the middle of the extract…” “Near the end of the extract…” Good things to talk about is focus. What does the writer focus our attention on and why? And zoom. Why does the writer choose to zoom in on this particular object?
You need to be careful with this approach. The November 2018 exam report stated: 'Students who did not do so well frequently used phrases such as 'at the beginning', 'in the middle' and 'at the end' but then narrated too much of the story, rather than considering not only what is
happening where but the reasons why, and how reading about this at this point added to their understanding of the text as a whole.'
@@mrbruff My teacher was insistent that we use this structure as a way to signpost that we will be talking about the whole of the source. I would go on to say something like: “In the beginning of the extract, the author focuses our attention on the bizarre nature of the house by zooming in on the door “with no handles” “ Would this be fine?
#GCSES_2022 Morning lads and lasses, *we got this* Remember highlight the extract to ensure your answer references the right bit of the extract and remember to describe the effect on the reader!
also i literally do not understand how peiple write this in 10 minutes how do you have time to even come up with those points and write three separate paragraphs in the space of 10 minutes AND explain each of those points with evidence. i never ever get to finish the paper because time is such an issue for me. can anyone give advice?
Well you are most like going to be rushing the first half of the paper because you are thinking about not having enough time for q5 so I recommend doing question 5 first then the others after (whatever order you think is best for you) this is what helped me not to rush and screw up my answers. then I found I had enough time to complete the paper because I wasn’t panicking about not the whole time, does that make any sense? Sorry I’m not very good at explaining things

Born in 1981-when I originally sat my GCSE English guess what? We used pen and paper to undertake revision with the aid of revision guides AKA bibliographical documents
William Donovan well remember to explain the effect it creates and if you’re really stuck just put the shifts in focus at the beginning middle and end. Remember to use quotes and don’t zoom in. Just explain the overall effect it creates for the reader. Hope I helped you a bit? Just stick to timings as well. Try and get three paragraphs done but if you don’t manage to if you have time at the end go back to it. Good luck tomorrow.
It would be really helpful if you could let us know where the extract that you are using is from. Apart from that - really helpful videos. I will be using this one in class tomorrow!
I don't think there is any set paragraph structure you 'need' to use. Ultimately you must write about structural devices in the text and focus, in detail, on the effect they achieve.

Will you manage to do all Language Questions by the exam ?
Yes
I don’t know, can you?
@@Nitroade24 Don't think so
I bet Mr.Bruff could write an essay on a single punctuation mark like it was nothing.
This is the hardest question lol
I hate this questiin

Can someone mark my work ?
At the beginning of the extract, the writer focuses at Brightly's situation: he is extremely famished and tired. This is intended to make the reader feel somewhat sympathetic towards Brightly, and overall intrigued in what will happen next. In the middle of the extract, the writer now shifts the focus on to Brightly's home. He lives in a cave, this also keeps the reader interested in Brightly's routine in his cave.
(Idk what to write for the end)
I hate this question so much😪 how do you explain how someone makes a text sound interesting?????
@@mma1698 Well I did say "hints", so I won't be marked down by the examiner. 😁

omg this video is very useful. Thank you so much Mr Bruff.
A good structure to use (separate paragraphs for each)
“In the beginning of the extract…”
“In the middle of the extract…”
“Near the end of the extract…”
Good things to talk about is focus.
I would go on to say something like: “In the beginning of the extract, the author focuses our attention on the bizarre nature of the house by zooming in on the door “with no handles” “
Would this be fine?
Really nice video, the aminations were excellent. Real content, keep it up.
Thanks!
Gift from God to know how to explain this easily
I’m glad it helped!
This is the hardest question for me, I find it really hard, I honestly don’t know how Mr Bruff does it
I always fail this question 🤣

Morning lads and lasses, *we got this*
Remember highlight the extract to ensure your answer references the right bit of the extract and remember to describe the effect on the reader!
Man i know im 1 year late but this whole structure thing is driving me crazy like what the hell man
i think your so true

If only my teacher would teach like him...
this is extremely helpful, thanks so much
also i literally do not understand how peiple write this in 10 minutes how do you have time to even come up with those points and write three separate paragraphs in the space of 10 minutes AND explain each of those points with evidence. i never ever get to finish the paper because time is such an issue for me. can anyone give advice?
Well you are most like going to be rushing the first half of the paper because you are thinking about not having enough time for q5 so I recommend doing question 5 first then the others after (whatever order you think is best for you) this is what helped me not to rush and screw up my answers. then I found I had enough time to complete the paper because I wasn’t panicking about not the whole time, does that make any sense? Sorry I’m not very good at explaining things
i spend 20 min on question 2 😩 my timing is so off they need to give us more time
@@anisha12345 bro I frr have the same problem
when you open the paper. spend 5 mins reading the text. spend another 5 boxing off seperate parts of the texts for specific questions and then write sub headings for each paragraph. this allows you to have a good idea of what each paragraph is about. also mark the points of where the exposition, rising action, climax and resolution are. then write the time allocated for each question above the question u are answering. so if im answering question 2 i will write 10 mins from above that question and if you want to write the exact minute you want to fiish the question make sure you dont go overboard. also remeber to always pick write a story AND NEVER pick write about the image because thats wayyyyy harder.
@@elitepredator6719 Ive always been taught to describe the image, so i don’t even know how to write a story
Do we have use paragraphs in the question.
Why am I watching this now idk but it's so helpful :)

I have videos in the Literature playlists breaking down the exams section by section. I am also working on new videos on that topic too.

Sir I have a question and I’ve gotten so many different answers I just need clarification. Is repetition a structural device? Thanks a lot
yes it is
only if it is used throughout the extract, then it is known as a motif. Otherwise it is still just repetition.
Thanks to this I got 8/8
cheers boss, had it today and it was about some Mexican family in a brush house and their baby got stung by a scorpion
i have my gcse exam in less than 4 weeks and i have no idea what's going on

Born in 1981-when I originally sat my GCSE English guess what? We used pen and paper to undertake revision with the aid of revision guides AKA bibliographical documents
would you recommend writing 1 long paragraph or 2 paragraphs with a decent amount of detail for each
My exam resits are next week and I’m cramming everything in now 😭
Dw we can pass/fail together
did you pass?
Whatd you get
Very good 👍 Mr Bruff 👏 😊
Revising in 2021 just before the exams :)

Gosh I can’t do this question very well. I usually just get about 5 marks. Hoping to get at least 6.
Exam tomorrow? ditto but at least you can achieve over half. i can barely write anything, i literally just dont get it oooF
Something is very wrong with that clock at 3:53! It takes several hours for the hour hand to move to the next hour hehe
i literally love you
It would be really helpful if you could let us know where the extract that you are using is from. Apart from that - really helpful videos. I will be using this one in class tomorrow!

What paragraph structure would you recommend using for this question?
I don't think there is any set paragraph structure you 'need' to use. Ultimately you must write about structural devices in the text and focus, in detail, on the effect they achieve.
Thanks mr. Buff
This was amazing thank you!
here’s me watching this half an hour before the final exam 😍
