Welcome! These musical clips are from a large video collection that is now being converted from VHS/Beta to digital. There is some viewing quality loss from the original video source due to the age of the tapes, but the performances are preserved and still a joy to view. Read my mind! Steve Buckingham produced the recordings in a way that really allowed her voice to shine. Barry Manilow gave her a polished sound on the Dionne ‘79 LP but her vocals were far more subdued in that production.

Ms. Warwick sings the words, not the notes. Her phrasing, dramatic pauses and rhythmic variations elevate the song. She can belt - as she demonstrates at the end of the song - but her great skill is as an interpreter of lyrics. It’s amazing to me how she can be simultaneously melodic and conversational.

What makes her and Whitney so distinct is that supernatural ability to hit those head notes out of nowhere and make it make sense. I think that runs in the Drinkard family.

I sent a fan letter to the beautiful and talented superstar Ms. Dionne Warwick a couple of years ago with a photo of her performing from the 1960's and she was so kind to autograph it to me, it is one of my very favorite autographs because it comes from one of the greatest musical entertainers of her time.
