As a mechanic I've seen quite a few bent mech hangers from branches and rocks getting caught in the rear wheel. If your gears are shifting nicely except for one or two in the middle it might be a bent hanger.
Good video. Well explained. Tip I learned from Sheldon brown, put the chain on the next gear up on the cassette from the small cog, then pull the slack out of the cable by hand. Make sure your housing is seated correctly at both ends. Usually will give you just about the right tension or very close to it. Then use the Ferrel to get the fine adjustment spot on. Generally works pretty well.
And remember to add a few cm to cable housing AND to the cable itself if you need to adjust your stem height.. Its very frustrating to cut a new cable after adding a spacer or two under the stem..
This is a great way to get you perfect shifting. The manual low adjustment is amazing, never thought of that. takes all the guess work out. screw barrel in, unscrew bolt for cable. set low , manual set high, set b tension to proper height. take slack out of cable, tighten bolt. shift up, and adjust barrel until it hops into the next gear. go the all the way up the cassette.. just perfect man. wonderful vid.
Doddy, great explanation as us usual. Can you, or any other GMBN subscribers explain why some bikes run exposed cabling on sections of their route? What are the pros and cons of running full length housing in this case? I’ve just replaced my gear cables and have switched from exposed to fully enclosed cables. It doesn’t look as good on the bike as the cable guides don’t fit. But it was less filly to install. My main motivation was that an enclosed system would reduce the amount of junk getting int the lines. (I ride in dusty conditions.)
Have a transition patrol, the cables exit the frame under the down tube near the bb. To get the cable lengths correct there I removed the shock valve core (and the air first of course) and put the rebound on full. The shock stays at full compression and so you can get the correct cable lengths easily.
I'm sure I remember being a kid buying a MBUK magazine, which came with a DVD of Doddy doing this exact explanation on his green Cove! I still remember it to this day when indexing gears! :)
Well I must have heard something as I've fixed my gears and all running smooth now. 'B' screw adjustment seemed to be the final adjustment that made all the difference. Many Thanks
You guys are the best. Your videos helps a lot in learning how to ride and how to fix my "tank" bike. Keep up this excellent work! : ) (checked this post like 100times for typos.. :D)
Re sram bgap....I set mine spot on correctly sagged with the red gauge (air out of shock and then strap rear end up to underside of saddle to hold there...so can do it single handed). Once set, pumped shock/ I put bike back to normal and put the red gauge back on to mark the cog position when not at sag...so now for that bike/gears I never have to set with sagged again, as know where it needs to be when set right but not at sag
9:33 providing your mech hanger is true..if you are following this video and find your bike skips some gears in the middle of the range, mostly will be loose or bent mech hanger..this can be easily fixed with the right tool ;)
i wish GCN would have a ''Doctor Doddy'' of their own, who makes in depth videos about bike parts and maintenance with so much enthusiasm.. Cuz roadies just dont go in so deep :D I mean road shifters and stuff, for example..
This saved my day , i listened carefully and applied what i heard , i found out that i put too much pressure on the cable that it pulled the cable out of the shifter... tnx bro
i do that for safety because when you're spinning the crank with your finger and directing your attention to the derailleur, it is easy for your finger to be eaten by the chainring... which happened to me
If your shifting isn't great, pull out your DAG-2 first and foremost and lube or replace your gear cable. A bent hanger and sticky cable will drive you absolutely mad. Now do your adjustments. A teflon spray-lube inside your shifter as Doddy mentions can help a bit too. :) Also, the Park cable cutters will also crimp your cable end caps. Behind the pivot there's two sizes for crimping those doodads, no need for a separate pair of pliers. ;)
Thanks for making this video. Ive followed all the steps and my gear changes are infinitely better. I can't quite get top gear (8th) to catch on the click but when I try micro adjusting it throws it into the wheel. Ive tried tiny tiny adjustment but it seems unable to make the change. Still Im grateful for the video and it has helped
all the vidoes from you guys are awesome, when i started looking at these videos i was thinking i have no fucking clue about bikes! so much new information!
Love the bit about winding in the barrel adjuster all the way, then backing off a turn - I've been doing that for years...great minds think alive Doddy!! Nick :)
It's a good idea to cut the cable on the derailleur end before pulling it out the casing to reduce the risk of scratching the inner sleeve of the housing.
Y S yep, cut above the kink where it was secured and u wont struggle to pull it out as much...its the kink doddy was pulling against trapping in the outer...
The key to the purfect gearshift is to start by checking if you hanger is straight. I am amazed how many times it not get mentioned. You dont start building a house on a un-even ground?! Other note is to check the outer cable. That the inner metal wires not sticking out. Normaly makes a crunshing noise at the shifter end when you turn the handlebars.
Sebastiaan Brouwer the first step of correct set up...and u cannot tell well enough for 10+ speed by just looking...also brand new hangers always need checking
Rupert Wenn ok I was not clear or on how to check your rear hanger. And you are correct to do it with correct tool. Eyes are not! Also correct on the new hangers. P.S. its my job but could not be asked to explane. More to make the point that here and on GCN they completly ignore step one and most important step to perfect shifting. Even tho f-ing tool is in the background...
The LBS fitted my GX Eagle and after watching your vid I can see they didn't account for sag in the rear end of my Rocky Mtn Altitude as the rear derailleur cable which comes out of the frame from the bottom bracket area was too short. I've just fitted a longer cable which droops a little bit when the rear suspension isn't compressed but I now have perfect shifting. I checked the B screw using the red plastic measuring tool and that was set to the correct distance however not with the rear end sagged. I couldn't coax my rather inebriated wife to sit on the bike, being Saturday night but I got to get this done as I'm riding in the Welsh Gravity Enduro tomorrow. I did think about balancing a bag of potatoes on the saddle but I'd need more than one bag and I'm not driving to the 24hr Tesco at this time of night.
A quick tip, let the pressure out of the shock and compress the suspension fully and then reinflate it slowly until it rises to your desired sag amount. Pump up the shock to your normal pressure afterwards ;)
The Bike Room sram themselves fitted mine and didnt set the bgap at sag....I have set up mine at sag, then without sag marked on the red tool/gauge the position so for that bike I can set without sagging
Hey doddy...u should never spray lube into outers these days...the tolerance with the inner in is so keen the lube will create a kind of hydraulic drag, as it tries to move the fluid...if dirty, replace them...they cost less than a beer...and espec with teflon cables as it defeats the point of the teflon
I was thinking the same, reminds me of my Minion SS, I believe originally people were cutting minions down so they made the SS, same thing with the Shorty, it’s a cut down wet scream I think, so I would not be surprised if he has cut them down.
!st, thank you for excellent video and answer me if you would... I've come upon a newer model Trek 6000, definitely a mountain bike! I'm older and thinking more road if not tour bike. I like it's style and the way she fits AND want to convert it to a road bike w/ ape-hanger handlebars... just kidding, the handlebars I mean. I'm almost certain it can be done, but is it advisable?
Just been watching the video and got to the part where you mention "steering lock" to stop the bar from turning too far. Is this something you can buy and install yourself or only come with the bike? If you can buy it to install, how would you go about finding it? (I'm useless with finding stuff like that 🤦♂️)
What if the chain jumps from the biggest cog downwards when pushing the bike backwards? 🤷♂️ Sram XO1 Chain gap is spot on with the chain gap tool. The bike is new. Also, when I shift von from second to first gear the chain only runs on top of the teeth and not in between? Also happened when shifting from third into second gear. Thank you.
Am I looking at a brand new Kaiser tire with cut middle knobs? Makes kind of sense I guess, but still hurts a bit because they're so expensive. I guess that are the advantages of being sponsored by a tire company. 😅
RUclips description says "Accurate shiting can seem out of reach". Can I suggest prunes?? Hahaha. Also, when you had the rear shock unhooked and were lifting the rear up and down, the BB housing looked cracked, or was that just dirt?
I got a new bike and some issues with the drivetrain. First it didn't shift to larger cogs, than after first check by my local bike shop it was the opposite. After a second check, he said the chain itself was to short (strange since its a new bike). Anyway, the shifting is mostly good except from the smallest cog to the second one. that one doesn't go. AND the shifter itself is very hard to press when changing gears to a larger cog (thumb lever). I can go again to the shop since it's a new bike, however, is there an easy fix? And I was wondering if the cable tension has anything to do with the stiffness of the thumb lever? Appriciate your advice! SLX shifters and cassette with XT derailleur (new from december)
#Doddy, what do you think about the Jagwire shift and brake kits..? I have an 11 speed Shimano SLX and was wondering the Jagwire is worth the money..? Thanks
I cant seem to get the top gear on the draulier to clear the smallest gear on the cassette, I've followed this multiple times and just cant get it right. I swapped the gear because the last one snapped, rear gears... any advise? Its fitted to a hard tail and using shimano avilo 8 speed
Hi Doddy, I just re-indexed my gears to fix an annoying clicking when pedaling. I've the problem and the gears are running smooth and silent when pedaling (in all gears). When I drop my chain into the granny ring however, if I pedal backwards the chain drops down 1 if not 2 gears. Any idea what the problem is?
This video came at the perfect time, just about to try changing out my gear cable for the first time by myself. I have a Shimano Alivio 9 speed Rear derailleur on my bike, and the cable comes with barrels at the shifter and a barrel on the rear derailleur also. Is that barrel also for adjusting cable tension? Would there be any benefit in using that barrel to adjust cable tension over the one on the handlebars? Or should I just forget that one even exists? #AskGMBNTech
My rear derailleur no matter how much I adjust it, slips on the 1,2,3,4 gears any recommendations on what to do, its pretty much brand new replaced a few months ago
One more time I keep hitting send button when I'm not ready to but anyway I have a Trek 4300 hardtail with an Alivio rear gear changer how do I check the gap for the top roller and the rear sprocket and what is the size of the gap that it should be?
When I completely unscrew the limit screw for the largest chainring thing my GX still sometimes shifts down. But my derailleur hanger is brand new! Is it possible that my drivetrain is the problem? I had a crash where it actually got hit so its probably not impossible
Doing this whole process will of course work, but if you are not experiencing any other issues you may want to try 1/4 to 1/2 a turn of additional tension via the barrel adjuster to see if that sorts it.
How do you check if you’re derailleur is bent? On my bike every single gear it shifts fine but the fourth gear it shifts like garbage is the derailleur bent?
It could also be that you ride in that gear the most, so that cog will be the first to show signs of wear. Very few MTB'ers come in with cassettes that are worn across the entire cassette. It's usually only a few gears, and the most commonly used will be the first place that starts shifting sluggish. If it's fairly new, than it could be a bent derailleur hanger, but that usually spans more than one gear. Check that cog really closely and make sure there's not a broken or bent tooth, and that there's not something wedged between it and the next cog that could be affecting the shift gate. If it's none of those easy fixes, then take it to a shop and they can use the alignment tool, and bend your hanger back. You can usually get away with bending them two or three times if they aren't too bad, but then at that point the metal will fatigue, and it's better to replace the hanger. Good luck!
If you still have an old quick release rear wheel lying around, you can screw this into the hanger instead of the rear mech, and you can check if both wheels are parallel. If not, your hanger is bent. Or just buy the hanger tool for around 30 euros.
Giant made the same mistake with the trance 27.5 You should not run cables for shifting under the bottom bracket. Its an epic fail. So many brands did that. So dump. Di2 would fix that but di2 cost is too far out there. Only solution is a to glue cable mounts to the top of the bb.
Jeremy Olson never spray anything inside your outers...replace if dirty... advice from there was wrong...teflon inners, dry outers...lubes actually create more drag in the confines of the housing with a cable in...
Could you please make a video on chain drop when back pedaling using a Shimano XT 1x11, 11 to 46 Tooth cassette please? I would really like to know how to fix this issue without having to buy more or new components if possible. But if I must, then so be it.
my rear derailleur is mishitting ALL the dam gears, to the point that the bike is unusable, because when you apply enough torque to the pedal, then it decides its time ti shift and throws your balance off by a mile, very dam dangerous while trying to push for speed, need help with this issue and the bigger problem is that the local bike shop did a tune up on this bike
It sounds like you've got some damaged teeth on your cassette maybe? Your drivetrain might be super worn. If none of the tips in this video solve it, maybe get it checked at a different bike shop?
@@gmbntech OMG thank god you replied i am in dire need for HELP! i replaced the chain with the right lenght chain, and now it only misshifts from 4th to 5th, it has "chain skip" i dont know if that makes sense, so essencially the gear acts as if it is going to shift gear, but drops right back in, the cog barely catches the chain and drops back in..only in 4th to 5th. suggestions?
How every day, is everyday? i cycle my 29er everyday for Deliveroo, 30-50 miles a day. But use my FS trail bike every other day for fun. But what I do is change the cable as and when I change my chain and cassette, which is about 4/5 times a year. i think he says here, but GMBN says in other videos it can be noticed on the shifter, rough changes, stiff leavers. Delayed changes means you cable is sticking. owning a chain measuring tool can elminate that being the problem. But is your bike perfect everyday, i clean mine every 2/3 days. Full soapy wash, degrease chain and cassette. Scrub each cog on the derailluer. Rinse, dry. Remove Crank and degrease and regrease bottom bracket and drop forks out to do the same to those bearings. Put it back together and lube the chain. By having such a heavy cleaning routine, it makes it easier to find specific problems.
When it starts to feel draggy/stiff to press the shifter! U cant define a time period...will depend on the conditions ridden in, washing of bike, temperature, frictional wear from your routing constrictions...etc. fix it when its done...
As a mechanic I've seen quite a few bent mech hangers from branches and rocks getting caught in the rear wheel. If your gears are shifting nicely except for one or two in the middle it might be a bent hanger.
I'm having trouble shifting up 6 to 4 but everything else works fine 😩
On my sram gx eagle it seem to have some noise when on the 8 and 9th sproket ... even if it shifts with no problem
MrSlick89 I have the same exact problem and my bike is brand new ;(
@@explorewithluke If you can, take your hanger off and put it on a surface you know is flat, and then you can see if it is bent
I am experiencing that
top tip; I always put a drop of super glue on the cable where Im going to cut it. Once it dries I cut it & it prevents fraying
You could also just use electrical tape… don’t have to wait for tape to dry lol
Well electrical tape has been used for decades without all that overkill. Cool idea though!
GMBN so easy to get the info I need quickly, well presented and precise
Way more info than I thought possible for proper shifting. Great video
Good video. Well explained.
Tip I learned from Sheldon brown, put the chain on the next gear up on the cassette from the small cog, then pull the slack out of the cable by hand. Would be really helpful to tell us what to do when your gears don't shift up once per index on the bottom 3 gears!!
Great tips, well explained. It would be nice if you linked the spray grease you use.

A quick tip, let the pressure out of the shock and compress the suspension fully and then reinflate it slowly until it rises to your desired sag amount. Pump up the shock to your normal pressure afterwards ;)
Luka Gorjup thanks why didn’t I think of that?
The Bike Room sram themselves fitted mine and didnt set the bgap at sag....I have set up mine at sag, then without sag marked on the red tool/gauge the position so for that bike I can set without sagging

Can I let the air out of my shock and move the suspension to 25% or whatever...and check the b tension that way?
My gear doesn't always change and the sometimes jumps 2 gears at once? (Sram gx 2020 12 speed)
How long would you expect a cable to last before you start having to readjust the tension?
Is there a difference between the Teflon coated cable compared to the stock cable?

I’ve broke the bolt that keeps the derailleur cable in place , what’s that bolt called so I can buy a new one
I have a brand new 2x9 drivetrain bike and sometimes there’s a delay in the gear change. No problem to me just weird any ideas?
Do everything you just saw here.
The derailleur hangar is probaly bent, if you are only
Experiencing bad shifts on certain gears.
Sounds like a bent hanger.
Derailleur hanger alignment tool can check if it is bent and straighten it if it is not too badly bent. There are plenty of videos on youtube.
Thanks..
Giant made the same mistake with the trance 27.5
You should not run cables for shifting under the bottom bracket.
Its an epic fail. So many brands did that. So dump. Di2 would fix that but di2 cost is too far out there. Only solution is a to glue cable mounts to the top of the bb.
Is it better to use a Teflon or silicon lubricant instead of oil? Oil has nasty tendency to attract and retain dust and grime.
Jeremy Olson never spray anything inside your outers...replace if dirty... advice from there was wrong...teflon inners, dry outers...lubes actually create more drag in the confines of the housing with a cable in...
Jeremy Olson use Teflon
If my jockey wheels are worn out/wobbly will this affect my shifting?
Ashley's Big Boy Bike Ride it depends how worn they are but yes absolutely
I have a Trek 4300 hardtail with a Shimano alivio how do I check
I can't get the last 2 largest gears smoothe..? Any suggestions?
i have problem i drive 3x10 and when i am in 1x10 and apply force some time there is clutch if i say corectly how to fix that :D
Could you please make a video on chain drop when back pedaling using a Shimano XT 1x11,
11 to 46 Tooth cassette please? I would really like to know how to fix this issue without having to buy more or new components if possible. But if I must, then so be it.
There isn't a fix for this .
.
Is this common issue or can it be solved somehow? Possible upgrading from 1x10 to 11..
my rear derailleur is mishitting ALL the dam gears, to the point that the bike is unusable, because when you apply enough torque to the pedal, then it decides its time ti shift and throws your balance off by a mile, very dam dangerous while trying to push for speed, need help with this issue and the bigger problem is that the local bike shop did a tune up on this bike
It sounds like you've got some damaged teeth on your cassette maybe? Your drivetrain might be super worn. If none of the tips in this video solve it, maybe get it checked at a different bike shop?
@@gmbntech OMG thank god you replied i am in dire need for HELP!
i replaced the chain with the right lenght chain, and now it only misshifts from 4th to 5th, it has "chain skip" i dont know if that makes sense, so essencially the gear acts as if it is going to shift gear, but drops right back in, the cog barely catches the chain and drops back in..only in 4th to 5th.
suggestions?
how often should you change the cable when riding everyday?
Sgt Smokey okey
U are riding a lot
Deliveroo isn't consistent. It is 30-50 miles spread over a 8 to 10 hour day. Lots of breaks in between orders ;)
RIP MisterBassBoost evry 3 monds
When it starts to feel draggy/stiff to press the shifter! U cant define a time period...will depend on the conditions ridden in, washing of bike, temperature, frictional wear from your routing constrictions...etc. fix it when its done...
can you tell us about your watch
Hugo Quinn he talked about it in a previous video. I think he said it was an animal promo watch or something.
