A vision for the future of Sierra Leone | Julius Maada Bio

  • When Julius Maada Bio first seized political power in Sierra Leone in 1996, he did so to improve the lives of its citizens. But he soon realized that for democracy to flourish, its foundation needs to be built on the will of the people. After arranging an election, he voluntarily gave up power and left Africa. Twenty years later, after being democratically elected president of Sierra Leone, he reflects on the slow path to democracy, the importance of education for all and his focus on helping young Sierra Leoneans thrive.

The problem in a lot of African countries, is that they were controlled and oppressed for so long by colonialists, that nobody who holds power wants to give up even a single slice of the pie. Its complete control or war. The majority of the world live in places that have had democracy for hundreds of years. African countries were invaded, pillaged and sucked dry and these people who were dominated were handed a system they didnt understand, and wars inevitably broke out.
I hope this man can make a difference.

That was at least 3 generations ago. I bear no guilt for what mistakes my ancestors may have made, nor do I assume credit for their achievements.
The British empire ceded governance to it's native populations over 60 years ago. It's about time we all called it quits.
"I hope this man can make a difference." If he's to be believed, he already has.

    To Sierra Leone..
The brutality of the RUF rebel Podeisanko makes the people call him the devil.
No country should deceive its people with its power.
No human being has the right to treat human beings abusively.
Don't forget the tragedies of the past.
It is the duty of the people to prevent another heinous politician, the militants, from coming forward.
In response to the achievements made by the people, the government should provide a lot of food and other economic activities.
Let us not forget that the nation exists through the efforts of the people. Soon, the people become the founding force of the country.
The people come first, not the country. There is nothing more important than the value of a person's existence.
In the past, we didn't know the importance of each and every one of these people.
Let's be courageous enough to swear to ourselves not to undermine the existence of each and every one of us.
Raise the value of your own existence so that you can become my country, my neighbor, my government, my country.
Then you will see the infinite possibilities.
There will be many countries around you that have grown, and with the cooperation of neighboring countries, grow your country into a peaceful and free country.
May peace, freedom, and abundance always be with Sierra Leone.
I am a citizen of the Republic of Korea, where freedom, peace, abundance, and technology coexist.
I hope that your country will enjoy all of this.
