  • The Forfarshire, it would later be acknowledged, had been in too poor repair to be sailing, and the decision to try to reach her destination had proved to be deadly. The lives lost and the stories of those who had survived would all be immediately overshadowed by a public who only wanted to know about one person however. They wanted to know all about the lighthouse keeper’s daughter, Grace Darling. Overnight her life would be turned upsidedown.

So many instances of selfless bravery that would be forgotten if not for the work of channels like this. Fantastic job, as always.

Excellent as ever. When I was a child we were learned about Grace Darling in school (Yes, we did have schools back then) and how souvenirs were produced and popular at the time. Sadly we didn't learn about her later life. Though it is very sad I am gratefull you were able to educate me further. In a way I think it enhances the story. Her courage, determination, humility and honesty are still an example to us all. Once more, thank you.

We completely agree that her courage and humility were outstanding, and that it was rightfully an inspiration to people. Unfortunately along the way Grace as well as her family seem to have gotten a bit lost in the legend. We are glad you enjoyed the story.

What a crazy story. An introvert becoming famous for a good deed and everyone knows where she lives

Poor woman, punished for doing a selfless act.
I’m shocked the boilers would have deteriorated that much in just 2 years. They really were terrible at maintenance or had a salt water intrusion issue into the system.

Doing this episode we found ourselves feeling the most sorry for Grace Darling because she clearly suffered so much from all of this.
We cannot be certain of the boilers of the Forfarshire in particular but there was talk on other ships of the same era with boilers being made too quickly and with inferior materials causing failure well before it should have.

A beautifully sad story and well narrated. One nitpicky point: shire, when placed at the end of a name is pronounced shure/shah.
    Cheers.

I guess it could have been worse for she could have existed in the time of social media.
