Abdul Qadir Jilani al Hanbali رحمه الله said:
"And if he says (greets you by saying) ‘Salaam’, he shouldn't be responded to and instead he should be taught that it (saying Salaam) is not an Islamic greeting (rather it is As Salamu Alaykum)."

@@r4izyes the matter is not so one sided akhi. Other scholars mention its permissability, see the sharh of منظومة الأدب الشرعية by any of the Rabani scholars. And above them is the statement of Allah T'ala
ولقد جاءت رسلنا إبراهيم بالبشرى قالو سلاما قال سلام.
Salam is a valid greeting although not the best. والله أعلم
