    The Ascaso Steel Duo PID is a stylish and compact home espresso machine that allows for simultaneous brewing and steaming thanks to it's dual thermoblock heating configuration (hence the name DUO). But is this new version of the Ascaso Steel Duo PID all good looks? Or does it have performance and features to match? In this review, we take a close look at the updated Ascaso Duo PID V2, and find out exactly that!

      Thank you for your excellent review. You recommend an IMS 20 g basket for the Steel Duo. Can you provide a link for the specific basket you are recommending? Also, is there a compatible distributor/tamper (model and size) that you would recommend?

    Perhaps worth noting that the requirement for a power socket capable of 20A will apply in the US with 110v circuits, but as the UK uses 240v (220v in Europe) a standard 13A socket will be fine given the total power requirement is 2100W (2100W / 240v = 8.75A).

    Stoked to finally see this review. This machine and the uno deserve more attention. Saturated/non-E61 groupheads are the future. Love the mention of aesthetics and competitive machines in the same price bracket. I went into Seattle Coffee Gear a few months ago ready to walk out with a Duo, but alas they didn't stock it, so they lost my potential impulse buy haha. If Ascaso put a group head heater on it, like their Baby T and the BDB, it would be perfect. In the end, I saved for months and just snagged a Decent De1 Pro.

    I've been looking at this machine for a while, but the low steam power put me off. It's good to hear that they've improved it. I would have loved to hear about the energy usage. Part of the benefit of a thermal block system is that it uses a lot less energy than a boiler. Especially with energy costs going up, this could be a big money saver

    Have had the V1 Steel Duo for a year and had my local store update the steaming of the machine to V2 with a conversion kit that was released simultaneously with the new machine. Overall I'm very happy with our Ascaso and can second basically everything you've mentioned, great review! But here's another three small things from my experience over a year of daily use that I might add: a) two perks over a similarly priced boiler machine apart from the quick warmup times are the fact that the thermoblock will always use fresh water directly from the tank. So especially in an americano or tea you won't have an off taste from the water having been heated and reheated several times. AND it's a lot more power efficient as well. b) man, the polished surfaced on top and below the group head may be beautiful at first, but that's where you put the cups. which (in our case) are made of ceramics. which scratches steel, especially with a vibration pump which causes the cups to move (quite a bit in our case). So by now it's mostly a scratched up mess and i just wish they had brushed the steel instead. c) and finally the slope of the cup rack (in combination with the vibration) is annoying as well, because cups will move to the back of their own volition and then group up there and start to rattle....

      @@rxonmymind8362 when you stop pulling a shot, the change in pressure can draw coffee and oils into your machine. One method to deal with this is to run your machine after to force those coffee bits and oils out, and you can use the "1 shot" option to push out the same amount of water each time. Really fancy machines will do this automatically when you take out the portafilter.

  • @FerasATQ

    Thank you very much for the in depth review and honest thoughts. I noticed when comparing this machine to the pro 300 in the case of steaming you said that if you make back to back shots and steam you should think about other options. That is the beautiful about these thermoblock machines. Steaming time for 1 cup of milk might be 30-40 seconds. BUT, you can keep steaming back to back to back with no difference in steaming pressure. Unlike the pro 300 which after two steams back to back you’re gonna have to wait for the boiler to reheat. So yes I agree, home boiler machines in the same price range can steam faster but I don’t think they can do them back to back to the same extinct the steel duo PID can.

    • @philindeblanc
      @philindeblanc 6 месяцев назад

      That is a interesting difference. Its like comparing 2 negatives. On dual boiler, you make them fast and wait, OR with thermoblock make them slow and wait...LOL. Maybe the take away from these steamers is to not have too many guests?

    I bought this machine a few months ago and unfortunately had to send it back. I received a faulty unit (steaming not working) so I had a change of heart and bought a Lelit MaraX in black with maple wood. For the brief time I had the DUO I must admit that by the looks alone the machine is a home run. It’s imo one of the nicest looking espresso machines out there that doesn’t have a E61 group head. I think only the LM Micra is nicer looking. I didn’t like the tamper it comes with and like mentioned here the lack of a good filter basket for 18g doses. The portafilter with the walnut handle is so beautiful. The machine made really good espresso, just mine had a malfunction with the steaming element. It packs all the desired features like PID, easy adjustable OPV to play with brew pressure, shot timer, Barista lights, hot water spout, easy access to water tank on the side among other things… at the end I’m happy with my decision going with the MaraX instead but I still consider this machine an excellent choice if you’re not into E61 machines.

      I don’t have any experience using manual like Flair so can’t comment about it but I prefer a complete machine with heating elements. I come from a Breville machine and got tired of the appliance look with all the plastic and less commercial feeling- main reason for me wanting to upgrade. I had not initially considered E61 style machines that’s why I went with the Ascaso DUO, but then I saw the Lelit MaraX and I just liked it so much that bought it and so far I’m loving it. If you don’t drink much milk drinks still MaraX will be an amazing tool to make great espresso. Just keep in mind that at that price point pretty much every machine will give you the ability to make great espresso but it all will depend on the quality of your grinder. They say better invest in a good quality grinder before buying an expensive espresso machine. For me the looks of the machine has a lot of weight on my decision making process. I love the looks of my black maple wood MaraX. Hope you find what you’re looking for!

      I used to say I dont do milk based so I dont care about the steam, 2 years in, and now its all about cappuccinos! Also, most other in the house and visits are also cappuccinos. SO I do my own espresso shots between :-) What I want to say is, Dont buy a machine that is going cost your hard work money with something that might change in taste. While I like a lot about this machine, almost 1 minute for steaming 1 drink is a bit long. BUT, it does have temp at the grouphead, which other machines lack, and the water will be straight from the fressh pitcher, not heated chamber. You can bipass this by running the water a bit, but, it is a plus. @@caesienyang

      Mine came with a scratch on the front painted panel like a little piece chipped off small but annoying and the walnut pf handle also had a scratch. I don’t think they pack up the machine that well. It was not double boxed like I have experienced from other manufacturers. All that not a deal breaker for me but I had to send it back due to steaming malfunction. It’s a great looking machine but I did not like the cup warming top being so ridiculously hot and also cups sliding from the vibration. Another thing it bothered me was that for some reason the puck was not that well dried after extraction. No machine is perfect but those were some annoying things I experienced.

    Something to note: most modern kitchens are wired to have 20a gcfi circuits. However, the outlets themselves are 15a gcfi. Double check your cirtcuit breaker but you *should* be good to go off the bat. You *may* just need to change out your outlet where you want the Ascaso to live.

      its a good point. It will drip through and channel across the underside, then need to wipe inside that narrow space to try and clean the top area. Not the end all, but for some folks that can be annoying. Yet , it is an advantage to not remove the tray to refill water, so a plus there. Also, you can simply wipe the top tray and be done. It is water that goes to the sink drain. Not a big deal. Other issues of this machine are more important.

Specifically, when compared to boiler machines, does thermoblock(coil) technology (1) reduce the quality and consistency of the shots produced; and (2) result in machines that are less reliable and with a shorter lifespan? Interested in your expert views on this?

    • @LifestyleLab_
      @LifestyleLab_  Год назад +2

      Absolutely doesn’t impact the quality of the shots negatively. The Decent DE1 also uses thermoblocks and it’s a very high-end reliable machine.
      Thermoblocks to have the POTENTIAL to be more vulnerable to scale buildup, but if taken care of properly (as any machine should) it will absolutely not be an issue. And if you do run into an issue, it can be serviced.

    • @philindeblanc
      @philindeblanc 6 месяцев назад

      Its actually the advantage of the machine. It also uses just the fresh water at all times. If you leave the machine on or if you do not purge boiler machines, you will be using chamber water thats been heated. Although this is understood and most people just purge the machine before pulling a shot. But worth noting. The reason this machine was taken off my list was the steaming, and glad it was so, as many here mention about the top getting very hot and the pump being a vibration king and shaking everything. That is not possible to deal with on machines in this price point.

    I recently bought the Acaso Steel UNO PID basad on your positivie review (and from others). The Ascaso USA recommends to set the OPV to 11 bar (in stead of 9 bar), and suggests to adjust the grind size, dose, and tamp pressure to achieve 9 bar reading. I have been trying, with different types of freshly roasted beans, for a few weeks, and whenever I could reach to 9 bar, the extraction was too quick. i.e. getting 1:2 ratio (17g coffee ground to 34g yield) in 10 to 14 seconds. If I grinded finer or increased the dose, then the extraction time would be longer, but the pressure would go above 9 bar. As of now, I just focus on getting the 1:2 ration in 25 to 35 seconds and let the pressure reach anywhere between 11 to 12.5 bar. (My OPV is set to 11.75 bar as it will provide chirping noise if the OPV is set lower than that.)
    Do you have any experience with it and how to resolve it?
    Thank you

      You cannot taste numbers.
      Dial in your coffee to taste, and not an arbitrary pressure and flow rate that may not be correct for your coffee.
      In my opinion, 12 bar is too high to set the pump pressure. I would opt for closer to 10, which would result in around 9 at the group with coffee instead of a blind basket.

I did check with Ascaso USA, and I was told if the OPV is set below 11, chirping sound could occur. So basically it is stuck with OPV at 12.5. Steaming on the Silvia is decent, but not spectacular and it's a single boiler so you're either trying to cool it down to brew or heat it up to steam and either your milk or the crema suffer. When I picked mine up I was close to taking it back as the steam power was not as strong as I'd expected. After removing the plastic no burn wand straw inside the wand I found the steam pressure is far better. I think the straw was stopping the steam from getting to the nozzle correctly and also seemed to make the steam wetter for some reason.
      In regards to the vibrating cups you can't get away from that I'm afraid. I got a small rubber coaster and that holds the cup in place fine.
      For me these things didn't outweigh that this machine can do back to back great coffee and be ready in about 5 minutes. I was initially going to go for an E61 machine but decided speed was something I needed.

    • @marcup1584

      The PID controls the temperature at the thermoblock, so yes you have to compensate and it does include settings to adjust the offset so you read the "compensated" value. We did a few temperature experiments on the Ascaso subreddit and found that it's typically offset by roughly 5°C.

      My point there being don’t go for the Micra until you have an excellent grinder, which it sounds like you’re planning to do.
      In that case it will largely come down to steaming performance and capacity. You could run a small cafe off the Micra, and it has steaming power to match. • @LifestyleLab_

      Water is extremely important to both the safety of your machine and the taste of your coffee.
      It really depends on the PPM of your water. Anything above 100, or with high calcium, and you should try to filter it down to 50-75.
      An easy option which is use is to get distilled water, and re-mineralize with specific espresso mixes like Third Wave Water’s Espresso formula. This will ensure that your machine stays in the best shape possible, and your coffee tastes as good as possible.

    So, the steam's still kinda weak. That doesn't surprise me too too much, getting thermoblock steam to be good is _hard_ and very few have actually managed it - Breville has with the thermojets, but they're the exception rather than the rule.
