    People arguing that the signs make it clear and that these people are bad drivers don't know what they're saying.
    Because signage doesn't necessarily mean it's entirely clear. For example, they do not have warning signs yards before you reach it. So, when you suddenly register the sign in your head, driving up you might be going too fast to safely slow down and make a turn especially if there's a car behind you.
    Also, a lot of people rely on Google maps or GPS when taking unfamiliar routes. And at the time of recording anyway. LTN were not recorded on them so people would assume that its alright because it's google and they're mostly correct anyway.
    So, yes. This sign was placed exactly there to TRICK people and fine them. It wasn't to make the neighbourhood better. Especially since Croydon council didn't even reply to them. And it was revealed they were making a lot of profit from the fines. And they didn't use that to make it more clear so people would stop driving through. It is being used as a money making road.

      Don’t agree with sat navs at all people should know where they are going when they are behind the wheel and really don’t understand why they have been put into the driving test. (And before you say anything I’m 25 years old been driving for 7 years and drive all over the country) People should be able to read signs when driving and should know what they mean. A car in a red circle means that you should not drive there and the sign clearly states what permit you need to drive though. However dispute this, to me this is still a money making scheme on the bases the council have put it there to reduce pollution. How can taking people on a 2 mile detour reduce pollution. It’s madness.

    The signs are unclear and incorrect. They don't really tell people anything. There isn't a line across the vehicle, so the signs aren't actually telling people not to drive there; they're just telling people that there are cars and motorcycles there. I don't know how laws work in the U.K, but the council would not be able to fine people without clear, legible signage.

    • @rhysepoos
      @rhysepoos 3 года назад +5

      You don't need a line across the vehicles; the red circle around them means that those vehicles are prohibited. In the pure context of UK road signage, the signs are very clear.
      However, any sensible person would have signs leading up to the zone to stop people heading in that direction, and a sign at the T junction warning people not to turn left. Unless the primary motivation for the council is simply to make money from fines, of course...

    • @jublywubly
      @jublywubly 3 года назад +1

      @@rhysepoos
      It may be clear to you, but I'm sure it wouldn't be to most people. Their sign is wrong. A no parking sign has a P inside a red circle with a line across it, a no right turn sign has a black arrow inside a red circle with a line across it, a no U-turn sign has a black U inside a red circle with a line across it. Therefore, if cars and motorcycles are not allowed in that area, there should be a red line across the middle of the circle.
      The statement on the sign "Fifty yards except permit holders" doesn't have any reference to what they're talking about.-It's an incomplete statement. With the diagram of a car and a motorcycle inside a circle, without a line across it, the sign is actually saying cars and motorcycles are allowed, unless they driver has a permit (what type of permit isn't stated either).

    • @rhysepoos
      @rhysepoos 3 года назад +7

      @@jublywubly In that case, most people need to brush up on their knowledge of traffic signs. Signs prohibiting certain vehicles never have a line through them in the UK. The highway code is quite clear that a picture of a motorbike and a car within a red circle means motor vehicles are prohibited within that zone

    • @woutervanr
      @woutervanr 3 года назад +1

      "The signs are unclear" if you don't know what this sign means you shouldn't be driving. It's very simple, don't break the rules and you don't get fined. What are you going to say next, parking meters are too hard to understand? This shit has been around for ages now.

    • @jublywubly
      @jublywubly 3 года назад

      Their sign says the opposite of what they mean it to say.
      If those vehicle are not allowed, then the sign should have a red circle with a line across it, as is used for other street signage, such as no parking.
      The lack of a line across the circle indicates that all cars and motorcycles are allowed in the area, except for BG permit holders.

  • @DeathInTheSnow
    @DeathInTheSnow 3 года назад +35

    So are Croydon Council _STILL_ doing this?? Has anything actually changed?
    All right, let's put their rebuttal another way. If the pure goal of the fine was to reduce traffic and noise pollution, which it clearly hasn't based on the research at the beginning, then that means the fine isn't benefitting anybody except the council. According to the Freedom of Information Act, as of 2020, at least three council member earn over _£200,000 per year_ in Croydon. THAT is where the money is going.
    So here's a solution that better suits the goal of the road. Turn it into pedestrians/cyclists only. That solves every goal of the fine in place, without hurting people who need to pass, and allowing you to remove the fine. Show us, Croydon council, that this is actually the goal and _not just a way to line your grossly overpaid pockets_

      They play the same game in Australia - so much so that individual police officers and council workers like parking attendants have quotas for fines they have to give out and they take future fines into account when delivering the yearly national budget reports. Towards the end of each month you could get pulled over for any random thing the police make up and they'll peel your car apart looking for anything they can write you out a fine for. My mother and 6 of her co-workers were fined for parking in a private car park where they work and the council dismissed the fines as soon as they complained - they were just hoping that some people would pay them and not bother complaining.

    Some of these comments show that physics isn't an accessible concept for some people... If you prevent 'rat runs' through your tiny residential street and divert it back to the main roads (less than 0.5 miles away), your air quality, quantity of pollutants, etc does not improve. More cars being idle while stuck in a traffic jam increase the concentration of exhaust fumes within your immediate vicinity. Just because you see fewer cars in front of your front door does not mean you are breathing cleaner air. Residents should take councils to task when it comes to protecting and introducing more green spaces that can absorb CO2 and provide a natural barrier to sound.

    If only this could change things in the US. Only a few states require cops to keep themselves visible with corner lights or partial patrol lights at night and day, prevent speed traps, etc. Most elsewhere it's totally legal to be sneaky. I've had cops even pull me over for bogus garbage and claim it was through a school zone or somewhere I wasn't even in. I don't even know how we'd clean up this mess in our country. We just paid over a grand in falsified tickets we tried fighting for a year, our Assistant DA was literally never in her office, and then she got arrested for corruption that happened during when we got the fake tickets. Did they cancel them? Nope. We'd had proof and everything that the cop who tried arrest one of our household for literally no reason and created false tickets was lying. They don't care here.
    I love watching Joe Lycett because it makes me glad that at least other countries still have some say in their rights as humans. My country is basically on the cusp of destruction at this point.

      Problem is, we need to get out of our cars to reduce pollution. Making people do a two mile diversion will not reduce pollution, it just increases it.
      If we truly want people to get out of their cars, then we need to make the streets safer (so that people feel they can walk) & build a better public transport system (so that commuting to and from work, without a car, is actually doable).
      The key difference between what we need to do and what is actually being done (other than effectiveness)? One will cost money and one makes money - that's what this is all about.

If all the local residents are against them, as long as they cover themselves up when they destroy the cameras they won't be identifiable. And nobody in the local area is going to help identify.

    I normally agree with Hugo Boss, but the signage is completely within the Highway Code. It should be clearer on the approach but the sign clearly indicates no motor traffic except with a BG permit, people that don't realise that's what the sign means shouldn't have a licence since knowledge of the meaning of signs like that is important and an absolute requirement to pass your test. So whilst I don't like the way these have been implemented there is a sign indicating the rule and another indicating its enforced with cameras.
