  • In this candid interview, Zola shares her amazingly heartfelt story of loss and love. We start off with how and why she fell in love with running. What was the reason behind her decision to mainly run 'barefoot'?
Growing up in South Africa during troubled times she moved to the UK under duress.
We learn how she was treated by the British press as well as the British public. Her story of being in the constant eye of a judgemental population when all she wanted to do was run. We trace her rise to celebrity status and find out that losing those close to her has been a trend throughout her life.
A happy return to her homeland South Africa, where she would meet and marry her husband and eventually compete for her beloved homeland at the Olympic Games. With many accolades on the track and across the fields of cross country races across the world, Zola was always seemingly removed from all of what that meant.
Marathon and Ultra distance running came into her life and it is in these longer pursuits that her peace and serenity is found. We talk about the mighty Comrades Ultra in South Africa and the host of the show even suggests a Marathon that Zola should add to her bucket list.
A remarkable individual with a remarkable life story, Zola Budd Pieterse.

🔴 For Mrs. Zola Budd, I have all the respect and admiration. She used the same shoes as me, the best: 🦶🏼🦶🏼❗👍🏻
"When I was growing up, I liked to run. I was just barefoot and playing and getting stronger. It's good for the feet. ” Budd ran without shoes in all her track and cross country races, including when she won world cross country titles in 1985 and 1986.

My heart is crying. How and why can the public chrush a young girl with innocent dreams like that :(! The things she wanted were of no loss to anybody else! Why not let her be and try....
Zola, you were my running idol all through my competitive years. Not because of your fantastic running, but your love for the sport, your guts and grit, front running and humbleness in the face of all that was happening. I would not be the only one always remembering you....
I am a professional running coach for a bunch of talented 13-18y boys and girls. I am telling them your story, what you did and why you still are my unsurpassed running idol.

Lovely interview. Zola has always been my favourite athlete. I still binge her best races from time to time. My heart breaks for her what she went through. And I curse that she got that injury in ‘86 - she was in the shape to dominate.

Great interview with one of my favourite athletes. I saw many of her races while still living in the UK and witnessed the appalling treatment she was subjected to. So sad we never saw her best, but great to see her happy. Thanks!!

If I had the choice given to go back in time and change only 1 event in sports history ... i would for sure prevent that collision with Zola Budd and Mary Decker.
Regardless if Zola could have won the race but she surely did not deserve the shit storm !

Iconic runner and person. Beautiful interview. I 30 and I didn't see the 1984 Olympic race directly. I watched it one or two years ago I don't remember. I'm sad that the world didn't see her best potential, she was only 18 and the media fell down on her like a bag of sh...
I run barefoot for year and I will never wear shoes again, except if the ground is too accidentally. But with time I hope I will never need shoes for running.
I wish you the best Zola Budd and continue to run for pleasure 👣☺️

There is more than one video on YT with the World Cross race where she won 4th place, but what she did not tell you here was that she stopped, bent down, slipped her shoe back on, and started racing again. It was enough time to cost her getting at least 2nd place, if not first.

She is one of my favorites. Also, Maricica Puica turned 70 in July 2020, and there is a video of her interview in YT. I can understand enough Romanian to understand it.

The media and political treatment of Zola as young runner was appalling!
