    As a native texan who is an avid fisherman and fish keeper, i deal with spotted gar, florida gar, long nose, and alligator gar on a fairly often occasion. I know for a fact they can stay comfortably in waters up to 85 degrees. I live in south east texas where it is above 90 degrees for up to 4 months and into the hundreds every single summer. Now maybe this is just the garfish that are use to living down here but dont be scare if your water gets a little warmer then the parameters listed in this video because here they usually spawn in late april when the temps already 85 average and the water isnt too far behind in temperature. Just figure id give this info to those out there because i have actual real world regular interaction with these fish. p.s. please dont keep thee fish in a 75 gallon tank thinking that since they breath air they are fine in smaller bodies of water. Really think before you buy and be prepared to atleast have 500+ gallon body of water for these gentle giants. and closer to 2000gallons for alligator gars due to the fact they WILL grow 7ft+ given enough time.

    I love the longnose gar. It fascinates me how and why their snouts are so ridiculously long. They're very hard to catch though because of their bony snouts, there's no meat to hook through. It's my dream though tk catch an alligator gar. They're so huge, I would love to catch a giant and hold it in my arms

    • @neo-filthyfrank1347
      @neo-filthyfrank1347 3 года назад +2

      Have you ever caught a gar? They're a pain to catch. I found an area infested with them and they'd bite and bite constantly but I only got 2 because they'd get off the hook so easy.

    • @austinhernandez2716
      @austinhernandez2716 3 года назад +1

      @@neo-filthyfrank1347 That's because they don't swallow immediately. They bite it, but they only grab onto it lightly and carry it away from other gar to a safe spot to eat it, and because of their "long nose" it takes them a few seconds to gobble it down. You can't set the hook immediately. Timing is everything.
      As you can see yes I have experience, I caught my first gar a year ago. I love catching them

    Gar are pretty common in most slow moving streams and rivers here in VA. Hard to catch because they grab and hold on with that bony beak for a bit before trying to eat what they grab. Same streams will have pickerel and bowfin, all of which are fun to catch and release. The little creek meandering through my nursery is no more than 3-4' wide but has these small 6"-10" redfin pickerel that are bold and entertaining to watch ambush minnows.

    Alligator Gar is the easiest to care for on paper because you need little to no knowledge of fish keeping to care for them as they will thrive in all sort of water parameters since PH and Temperature don't bother them. But that being said, they are not for beginners because they grow so large and grow incredibly fast too so you need to plan ahead if you are planning to buy one. Buy a tank atleast 240 gallons(8feet) this will be your Alligator Gar''s temporary home for the first year since their growth rate slows down incredibly once they reach 3-4 feet, then while your Alligator Gar is growing, you need to be planning on making a huge pond where your Gar can make a permanent home because as big as you Gar is at 3-4 feet, it is still a baby and will soon outgrow the 275 gallons and worse even break it.

    I'd like to keep a spotted or longnose gar in my bass pond. Is that doable?

      Yes but they will eat them. Depending on your location too. But you should be fine as long as the pond is deep enough and don't freeze over. As they like to come to the surface and breath air.
