The city originally wanted this air train to continue to LaGuardia, then into the city via a subway route. The airlines (whose taxes paid for this) balked. In a compromise, these air train cars are built to NYC subway standards and could run on subway tracks if, at some distant point, it was to be integrated into the system in some way.

There are a few areas in the subway system where trains can get up near this speed Lexington Avenue express comes to mind. These trains have faster acceleration the standard subway system. The issue in New York is the stations are so close together so trains never really get the time to really get up to speed. And other systems around the world like London stations are way more spaced. Even our automated lines subway lines stations are too close to achieve any real speed.

@Daniel Chang Technology is great it helps makes life a bit easier or a lot easier. But it's taking jobs away from people that were able to use that to take care of their family send their kids to school and live a decent financial life. My grandson is nine & my granddaughter is 3 right now and if they plan to automate a lot of machinery in the future what jobs will he have?

@Daniel Chang: The old factory areas here in N.Y.C. mostly have been turned into high priced residential nieghborhoods. Look up the history of Long Island City, Queens.
