This goes to show just how valuable a competent, honest vehicle mechanic really is. If reconnecting a vacuum line was all that was needed to fix the issue, at the minimum, the previous repair shop was incompetent; more than likely, they were blatantly dishonest and were trying to stick the vehicle owner with very expensive, unnecessary repairs. Either way, totally unacceptable; that repair shop needs to be identified and exposed for all to see.
You can’t beat Toyota’s quality and longevity, my daughter has my old 2003 4-Runner , it just turned 348,000 miles, with proper maintenance these vehicles are solid.
V6? You flush the transmission, diffs, transfer case, on schedule? All highway miles? I’m really curious. I just bought 2, 4Runners, 2020 for the wife and 2021 for me.
My 2005 Sequoia was having the same 4wd issues. And sure enough, it was the same exact problem and solution that you described in the video. I am very grateful that you made this video. I owe you a coffee my friend!!!

After checking the 25A fuse as good I was not looking forward to pulling solenoids I came across your video. Rotted vacuum hose end piece was staring me in the face. Rummaged around in my shop for 3 inches of hose and a male-male pipe connector. Problem corrected in less than an hour and for pennies of supplies. I love simple fixes, THANK YOU SIR !
99.9 % toyota owners in California are trying to locate your shop , only a dozen or two were able to, you are doing excellent job hiding from potential customers. This video is a testament to your honesty and skills, very unusual in America.
Love your videos and how you instruct about what to look for with the different vehicles. More than that, I appreciate your honesty in dealing with your customers. Renews my hope that there are still honest mechanics out there for those that need assistance with repairs on their vehicles. Be safe and God bless.
I used to sell Toyota’s for 10 plus years. If you don’t put these transfer cases into low range once a year the actuators will not operate correctly. I had to have one put in a 2007 Sequoia. You have to split the cases to fix it. I would suggest that you try low range. If it doesn’t go in I believe you have to split the cases to fix it which would be $3000+. Love the channel. Thanks for the video.
Awesome channel Peter, so informative and helpful! I have a 2005 Sequoia 4WD with 245k on the odometer. This video showed up in my feed today and got me curious. I went to the garage and sure enough, my transfer case vacuum/vent line looked just like the one one in your video, completely off the nip and cracked/rotted on the end. Although I have not experienced trouble with the 4WD, this video made for a quick preventative fix! Thank you!
Wow, it's like they just wrote up the quote without even taking a look!? As you say there might be more to it, but hopefully it *is* just that simple fix and then he'll be happy to spend his money with you for future maintenance. Well done.
I have a 2015 second gen Sequoia. Had an issue like this but ALL the dash lights came on, brake,, ABS, Traction, 4Hi,4LO, diff lock, odometer did not change as I drove etc. Only had 14k miles, under warranty so I took it to toyota dealership after nearly a whole day, service said need to replace the entire eletrical module for the 4WD. They need to get the part covered under warranty. Set an appointment, but got a call back that they will check the vehicle again. WHAT? They said they will have a master tech check it cause Toyota needs a better detail explanation to cover it, as the part is over $3k. Went in again after another whole morning, master tech fixed it. It was a ground wire with too much resistance. Imagine if it wasn't under warranty? Did they just decided to spent a few minutes to make an assumption it was that $3k part and if out of warranty without push back from Toyota, I would be stuck with a $3k bill!
Old comment for you but I just saw this video. The hose he replaced is a vent line. Sequoias are notorious for 4wd actuator intermittent problems and the standards fix is to replace the transfer case as it has to be split to service the full actuator. There are workarounds, but this is the standard solution. Customer likely brought this truck back when his problems returned from failing sensors. I'm in the process of chasing down something like this myself.
Everyone likes their _Toyota._ I am looking for a nice 2005 - 06 Sequoia. Here in California the dealers want about 9000. I am trying to find private party original owner 👌
‘04 Limited with 242k, same! Everyone thinks it’s newer or has about a 100k less miles, lol! other than my front diff shift actuator or range sensors needing to be tested/cleaned/replaced and as of recently seeing she needs some tlc in the front end, and some other little things. but nonetheless still going strong, drive it about 40 miles daily. After my ‘05 Camry took everything I threw at it I promised myself I wouldn’t buy anything other then a Toyota and stuck to it. (couldn’t find a smaller SUV like a Highlander or a 4runner where the price wasn’t astronomical), and initial plan was to clean it up and resell, but I’m very happy with my Sequoia! Fuel economy is definitely the downside…!!
I think that crumbling hose is a vent line. It doesn’t actually engage the actuator. The actuator uses a small electric motor to push a rod into the transfer case. A switch in the actuator senses the engagement and changes the dash lights. Most of the time problems with the actuator come from lack use.
They always have been hard to find and I looked for years when I drove old jalopies. I finally found one after I bought my 'Toyota' so I hardly ever see him.
192k on our 2003 Sequoia. Very comfortable ride and we don't normally keep the rear seats in, so tons of space inside. Rust will eventually kill our truck. The frame was just not well treated, either by Toyota or the previous owner. I would love to find a mechanic like Peter in the Baltimore \DC area. I do basic oil and diff device (easy enough) but want an honest professional for my truck and 2010 Prius. Enjoy the videos. Straight forward and educational.
That is a vent hose not vacuum .. unfortunately that won't fix anything... but it will help keep the inside of the actuator clean and dry so it's still a good idea to fix it
That was a good one Peter. Have heard of or dealt with the intermittent vibration or sort of "grrrrnnn" sound that some sequoia owners complain about when in 2WD. It goes away in 4WD...
Those actuators stick. It's common on that model and the Tundra of the same generation. It happens when you don't use them much and can often be fixed by just engaging it over and over to free it up. No charge for the fix.
From my understanding, that hose is not a vacuum line it is a breather hose. They often break and let in moisture to the actuator motor causing the motors to malfunction.

I had a similar issue. My 03 sequoia got stuck in 4WD locked diff. Center diff light flashing. I tested both transfer case postion switches and found the front one to be bad. After replacing it I disconnected the battery for about 15 minutes and then reconnected it. I started it and the blinking light went away. I would start with the position switches if you’re having similar issues. The part was $61 with tax.
It may be cheaper to buy a second house in Arcata just to have Peter as your car repair specialist than to continue to deal with local garages. Who doesn't want the occasional trip to the northern California coast?
If you did that for me I would be coming back. Think that hose was cut before? Toyota uses a lot of those spring type clamps even on vacuum hoses. Great Videos!
Hey Toyota Maintenance! First, great videos. Any luck resolving the Sequoia/4runner's dreaded "VSC/Trac Off" lights? They turn on in my Sequoia from time to time. I swapped in a used yaw rate sensor but that didn't seem to do the job. I don't get a Check Engine light, just VSC & Trac Off lights, no tone and no drivability issues. I'm on the verge of just taking the bulbs out of the back of the cluster.
My center diff light is flashing on my 2002 Sequoia. I guess step one is to see if the vacuum line is cracked or attached. That was not happening Sequoia still goes in and out of four wheel drive low no real problems. I'm guessing my center lock is not working correctly?
