  • On November 29th, 2023, Metra SD70MACH #507 led MDN train 2135 to Fox Lake, Illinois. This would be the first time a new MACH would ever led a revenue passenger train! Metra started receiving their SD70MACHs (rebuilt from KCS/TFM SD70MACs) last year and began testing them in mid to late 2023. A few entered revenue service on the MDN, MDW, and NCS lines in the fall, but as trail units only. Until now. With the #507 in the lead, I caught 2135 arriving at the end of the line in Fox Lake and then being put away in the coach yard for the night. I'm excited to start seeing these things on trains!

People keep bringing up how the units wear K5LLAs but no one is talking about how beautiful those walkway lights are

A nice touch. Makes them easier to shoot at night too!

The SD70MACH can be equated with the original B1"1B" configured WDP4 (which also has the v16-710) and the B"B" configured Renfe 334 (powered by v12-710)

Honestly, I don't know why Metra didn't buy former NJT GP40PR's? Even though the SD70MACH is a handsome machine!

Great drone footage at the end, love the engines and coaches all lit up and seen from above. Quite magical. Love to see that on a snowy night, would make an excellent Christmas card picture if it had snow on the ground.

Meanwhile we stilllll have f40ph's on the UP west line lol. Ive seen like 2 -2s on that line ever. That being the cnw unit (they gotta at least let us have that one being ex cnw trackage and all lol). Its kinda like how the e9s were on the bn in the 90s when we had the fancy new locomotives on the up and they had the old "crap" lol i miss those e9s. Im sure ill miss the og f40s when theyre gone too. But ive seen them a million times in my life lol

Their nickname should be the “Stomach” units since the name SD70MACH almost spells the word stomach with 70 replacing “TO”

@@railfangarrett6313that has nothing to do with it. The reason only 4 axles are powered is it’s all that it needs for the tonnage it pulls. 2 less traction motors and gear boxes means less maintenance.
