Gardner made the best ever diesel engines. They just keep going.

So beautiful thank you 🙏 I’m engineering and I’ve handled lXb’s it’s the most beautiful engine and I’m a Ferrari Technician but there will be nothing like a Gardner starting up 6LXB

I used to work for a bus company called Hedingham in Essex. 95 percent of the double deckers Leyland Bristol were powered by the 6LXB bloody good buses and engines

Even though it’s been neglected it’s a proper sweet thing.

Looking at the set up, its from an Olympian double decker. Sounds really good on starting.

Looking at the mounts and bellhousing I too would think this came off of a Leyland Titan or Leyland Olympian double decker bus.

Fosetts curcus .... came to me one day back in 1994 ... ERF 12 wheeler fan belt problem ... went and had a look one belt gone one belt wrapped around the fan ... badly damaged not reusable but ok for a pattern ...first thing to do get two new belts ...i went to a farm machinery stockist ...and gess what a belt of a FORD 7600 ... spot on £ 14.OO POUNDS the pair ...next beeing a british built engine build for all kind of applications ...loads off mounting points on the block ... it had a spring loaded tensioner mounted on the front off the block ..but it had ripped a pice off the mounting off...i made a plate down below it four treded bolt holes i had loads off nut and bolts got four to do the job...put the plate on and bolted the tensioner on with nets and bolts ...😉...job done ...i seen rope pullers thay look like small tugs thay have 150s and 180s in then thair a farry boat got a 4cyl in it and some trawlers with gardners in them ....i think that ERF was 220 hp... helo from IRELAND...😆

Hi Joe, i agree with Adam Fletcher - giving some love to a Gardner...what is the plan with the the old girl? one of the 3 6lxb i have ( yes i am obsessed with my 6lxb) is out of an old bus with the starter on the pump side, i also have a lay shaft that runs along under the exhaust/intake which allows to drive system at the rear of the engine - which i am thinking of running the alternator for the start batteries down there right next too the batteries them self... keep the vids coming ... and "keep calm and start your Gardner" cheers Brad

I'd say that's out of a Leyland Titan or Olympian Bus, the bellhousing looks like it mates up to a Leyland hydracyclic gearbox

I wish my lxb on my boat would start that easy 😂😂🙈 thing takes about 100 turns before it fires or 5-10 with extra fuel button... Can't wait to have chance / money to get this engine send off to you Joe and get it checked and done what ever needs done to it so it keeps going for another number of year. Needs new sump so it be going out eventually 🙈

Nah, there is something wrong. Gardners are normally easy to start. We are replacing an engine just now, where the original Gardner was in use for 33 years, without having a spanner put on it!

@@tangentgardner wow that is impressive. Can't wait to get my one sorted so it lasts that as well 👌

Didn’t the MOD like Leylands more in terms of buses?

100% ex London transport Leyland Titan, woulld of been coupled with a Leyland Hydrocyclic transmission, the large holes on the bell housing meant you could access the 2 drive plate mounting nuts, 6 in total, note also the elbow on the engine oil filler without the long extension tube so that it could be filled from an offside mounted filler, best thing is this engine has a high chance it was overhaulled by myself.

Looks like it has come out of a bus Mounted across the chassis

Long life engines but very little power or torque. Always pretty useless in heavy trucks..
