SEINFELD is an American sitcom television series created by Larry David and Jerry Seinfeld. It aired on NBC from July 5, 1989, to May 14, 1998, over nine seasons and 180 episodes. The show stars Seinfeld as a fictionalized version of himself who is the main protagonist and focuses on his personal life with three of his friends - George Costanza (Jason Alexander), former girlfriend Elaine Benes (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), and neighbor across the hall Cosmo Kramer (Michael Richards). Seinfeld is set mostly in an apartment building in Manhattan's Upper West Side in New York City. It has been described as "a show about nothing," often focusing on the minutiae of daily life.
Seinfeld has received awards and nominations in various categories throughout the mid-1990s. It was awarded the Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Series in 1993, Golden Globe Award for Best TV-Series (Comedy) in 1994 and Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series in 1995, 1997 and 1998.[132][133][134][135] Apart from these, the show was also nominated for an Emmy award from 1992 to 1998 for Outstanding Comedy series, Golden Globe award from 1994 to 1998 for Best TV-Series (Comedy), and Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series from 1995 to 1998.
TV Guide named it the greatest TV show of all time in 2002 and in 2013, the magazine ranked it as the second-greatest TV show. A 2015 The Hollywood Reporter survey of 2,800 actors, producers, directors, and other industry people named Seinfeld as their #5 favorite show. (Wikipedia)
SEINFELD stars Jerry Seinfeld as a stand-up comedian whose life in New York City is made even more chaotic by his quirky group of friends who join him in wrestling with life's most perplexing, yet often trivial questions. Often described as "a show about nothing," Seinfeld mines the humor in life's mundane situations like waiting in line, searching for a lost item, or the trials and tribulations of dating. Co-starring are Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Jerry's ex-girlfriend and current platonic pal, Elaine Benes; Jason Alexander as George Costanza, Jerry's neurotic hard-luck best friend; and Michael Richards as Jerry's eccentric neighbor, Kramer.
STARS:Jerry Seinfeld, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Michael Richards, and Jason Alexander as George. (sonypictures.com)

This is probably the most insightful, introspective analysis of the show by its key insiders that I have ever seen.
Many people besides myself believed the show ended too soon. Nothing was the same after that show ended. It wasn't a stand-up routine where you leave them wanting more. It was a major sitcom of a group of people that we all loved and depended on. Sad.
@@dguarino6586 if you listened, the amount of work and pressure involved in churning out that show became too much for Larry David, the most talented and critical individual contributor on the show. Jerry knew he would suck on his own. Perfect time to end the show, before it started to suck.

That is my Favorite episode.
He was playing himself in that episode?
"Of course, absolute zero!"
I found Jason extremely articulate, bright, and sensitive. So, yeah, nothing like his character on the show.
Abstinence George could've solved quantum gravity.
That's because he's that good an actor.
@@twonumber22 Especially likely if it happened to be the summer of George.
George’s mind is underrated
Worlds are colliding! George is getting upset!
The honesty of Jason Alexander is unbelievable. He doesn’t mind saying what he thinks, but everything he says is so articulate and thought. Great interview
He's the Bizzaro George!
He's insanely articulate. Wow. It really makes the performance of George much more impressive to me.
He's really eloquent! And everything he says sounds genuine. I wish his interview was a little longer
@@deletedplzdelete779 does he say goodbye or badbye when he arrives?
His was the best interview
The Jason Alexander interview section is remarkable. He comes across as very informed and open about the show , his career, the request for $1million per show per featured supporting cast, the fact that it may have been detrimental to TV in the long run, and how Jerry came in at the end of the process and told NBC to pay them. He's an extremely likeable human, he's done is homework, and he was able to see the ramifications of the pay raises (good and bad) for the industry. He shows how good his acting was to play bumbling, impulsive, hot headed, and hilarious George.
I also enjoy Jason Alexander's part of the interview he seems like an extremely intelligent individual not to mention talented❤
And before Seinfeld he was a well-established, highly-regarded musical theatre actor very successful & respected on Broadway.
I'm every bit of a fan of Jason's Alexander's work on Duckman as his on Seinfeld. A first-rate performer .
Seinfeld is the greatest sitcom of all time. Hands down
Are you a joker?. The Honeymooners was light years better and Jackie much funnier than anyone on Seinfeld!

Frasier is the greatest
Definitely can agree as to why people feel that it's the greatest. I'm in another camp that not TOO many will agree with, but Gilligan will forever be the greatest TV sitcom for me. IMO nothing even comes close, and I've been watching for so many years that I can recite lines from the script as I'm watching!
Do love Seinfeld though. The jokes never get old, and the cast was amazing.

Except when he mentions who had a bigger hand in the show as far as writing it. That’s Larry. Not comparable to Jerry, sorry Jerr. Larry is pretty brilliant.

The reason why 'Seinfeld' was so successful was the 'no hugging, no learning' mantra. The characters never learn from the mistakes they make. The mistakes themselves are character flaw driven. The characters are at once unlikely, but recognisably 'us'. Seinfeld IS the greatest sitcom ever written/performed/screened/remembered.
yeah every other sitcom starts with very flawed and interesting characters, but then they slowly feel the need to "fix" them and have their characters become better people over time, which eventually just becomes boring and inaccurate. just imagine if Jerry had a long term relationship or kramer got a full time job
It’s always sunny is very similar in that aspect
@@kgisabeast same with peep show from the UK
it's so mindbogglingly crazy to think Rosie O'Donnell was almost Elaine. I am going on record to say this show would never have been as funny or successful without Julia. The older I get and the more years I watch this show I realize just how crazy hilarious Elaine's character is and how important she was to the overall show.
Where did you hear about Rosie O'Donell? That news to me. I did hear that Patricia Heaton (Debra from Everybody Loves Raymond) was a finalist to be cast as Elaine. I believe JLD was the perfect choice.
She is wonderful. My favorite is when she’s dancing in her pj dress trying to find the guys brown sweater. Her dancing there makes my day.
Yeah, she was great as Elaine, New Adventures of Old Christine was also excellent, and she is $ on Veep.
I love Julia Louis Dreyfus....in This abd Christine abd VEEP....National Treasure😍
Without Jerry jokes and Larry writes, the show would never have been funny, so... fyi sometimes getting older is losing intelligence because of dying nerve cells

Citrusy, I find. The way time tastes, that is.
Jason is incredibly candid and forthright. Fantastic and so appreciated.
I’m rewatching Seinfeld on Netflix and laughing my ass off as the first time. And boy, as impressed as I am by Michael’s incredible physical comedy, I really think the comedic genius was Jason Alexander’s acting. I think none of the four were so willing to humiliate themselves for a good laugh like he did in portraying George. And when you see this interview you see what am thoughtful and intelligent man he is, millions of miles away from George. I read somewhere he was going to study classical acting in drama school. But a professor told him that with his looks and built, he’ll never play Hamlet, so it’s better if he studied comedy instead. And he did, and look how just incredibly brilliant his George turned out to be, like an evil clown Hamlet.
I just wrapped up the entire series on Netflix as well, and really came away thinking how much of an impact Kramer had on the show. Although the show is named Seinfeld, Jerry feels more like the platform that allows us to have laughs provided by his friends, especially Kramer. I obviously like all 4 but my rewatch now really had me thinking what a big part of the show that character was.
I think the show wouldn’t work as well if we were missing even one of the characters. While the character of George gave a lot to the show, I think it was how wonderfully they all fit together, or rather didn’t, that made the show so perfect. But George is probably my favorite.
Agree with you. George Costanza, Frank and Estelle, some of the most hilarious episodes. As Newman says, "Hilarious"
I'm 51, i've watched many, MANY "sitcoms". Seinfeld is by far the best. It's my go to sitcom when i have nothing to see or i want a good laugh.
Jason Alexander's is perhaps the most honest and sincere response to an interview that I've ever seen.
Respect.
Jason was refreshingly honest about the NBC deal..
Jason's comments were extremely accurate, I lived in NYC for over 15 years so I saw first hand what this show was depicting week by week, I remember getting to work early so my co-workers and I could discuss the episode from the night before. It's funny how "Seinfeld" and later "Mad About You" depicted NYC life accurately (outdoor markets, subway system, street vendors etc.) but "Friends" was not handmade it looked and sounded like it was churned through a Network Studio mentality, it had 6 people and could not deliver a quarter of the humor and inventiveness Seinfeld could with ony 4 cast members.
Friends was a pile of schlock compared to Seinfeld and shouldn't be mentioned in the same sentence, eva!
Seinfeld was in a different " cosmos" than Friends couldn't have reached in another 10 years if had continued , they wrote that show out of funny when they put Chandler and Monica together . Go back and just observe the difference in the stupid lines for him that were assumed to be punch lines but we're just silly adolescent thinking , instead of adult Chandler confidence delivering sarcasm .
I've never understood why Friends was so popular. It was not even a fraction as funny as Seinfeld. And you are right, there was nothing "handmade" about it.
@@charlesdjones1 Agreed! It was just depicting the 90's decade as cool and sexy, and that's about it.
@@conniediaz6456 imo, Friends sort of became the blueprint for everything wrong with modern sitcoms, it's still more or less followed today and that is kind of sad, because it's all so cringe now.
Jason Alexander is a very bright guy
Jason's words about the contract negotiations were very informative.
Who is getting paid now from the $500 hundred million Netflix paid for five years? I think it is Jerey's company.
Since the show is now on Netflix..im rewatching all the episodes. It makes me laugh everytime! 😃
What a pity that a streaming studio like Netflix has not been able to create anything close to as funny as Seinfeld. They've been a major force for 10 years now and television has become more and more disposable.
Except they edit the shows on Netflix cutting out very funny lines.
@@sidepot and it's but widescreen

Damn suddenly I feeling so old gosh
Jason Alexander is very articulate and his intelligence shows in all that he said. But, the interviewer struck a nerve at times. His questions to Julia and Michael Richards should have been more about their experiences and creative process rather than the genius of Jerry.
the way he explains the success of the show is so accurate it looks like he wrote a thesis about it. It's funny to see how Jerry and Larry seem a little nonchanlant about that success and how Jason really deep analysed the "whys" and the "hows".
I have never heard any celebrity talk so openly about negotiations with a network. It was really interesting and Jason describing why they asked for a million actually made me think yeah, that makes sense. Basically saying they may never work again because of typecasting or whatever.
Kinda strange though he turned around and said the Network should not have paid them that amount.
But I appreciated his honesty and letting us in on something that other entertainers shy away from talking about.
Newman was in JFK... Oliver Stones film 👍🏽

My favorite show of all time, but I agree with Jerry that is ended at the right time. I still watch them over and over, and still laugh.
Yes. Best ones end enough "soon" if you will. Everything has to end sometimes, better when it still good. If they beat the dead horse, it gives bad taste on mouth and then that effects the way we think about the show afterwards. IMO.

This show is proof that real life is full of humor, and laughter is the best medicine. We should never lose the ability to laugh at ourselves, to never take ourselves too seriously.
It's hard to see George in Jason Alexander he is so intellectual and well spoken just brilliant and while he is speaking i don't even think about him being George, He's an amazing actor!

22:05 Jason Alexander just defined perfectly the contrast between the LD era vs. the post-LD era.
Yeah that part was very interesting.
Seinfeld (along with The Office) have gotten me through any and all lockdowns as laughter is the best stress relief....
Seinfeld was the first sitcom I started watching when I was 10 years old. It was mine and my moms favorite night of the week. Back when you actually had shows to look forward to. I’m 41 now and still have it in my “continue watching” on Netflix. It never gets old.
Was workng long hours in Adv Agency the became a mom ~ years later like 2021 rediscovered & just keep watching ~
I’m 43 and same. My parents are immigrants from Colombia and English was a distant 2nd language for them and they still loved and enjoyed and understood the subtle nuances of the jokes.
I just turned 40 and have been watching Seinfeld since around 1997. The show has constantly been with me ever since. The episodes aired a week later than in the States (I was in northern Europe), but I always made sure to tune in. I also remember taping a few episodes on VHS 😄
And I later bought all the Season boxes on DVD and continued watching the show through the years. When I moved away from home and left my parents I only had a bed and a tv for the first couple of weeks and the Seinfeld DVDs was what comforted me. that and Stallone's Rambo trilogy.
But my mom was oblivious about the show, I don't think she even knew it existed. My dad didn't understand the show at all and changed the station right away if it was on. If he came home and saw me watching it he would always ask me 'how can you like this?" with a bewildered look on his face.
The Seinfeld show is such a huge world of endless things to discover. The DVDs brought so many interesting Inside Looks and the episode commentaries were fascinating to me. And RUclips has so many interesting videos, like videos with compilations of recycled actors that you see in the background as extras, the same people walking around in the background in scenes, some of them in 50+ episodes, things I never would have noticed on my own. Or videos editing together all 'Elaine's shoves', or all 'Kramer door scenes', or all the times we heard Larry behind the camera, or that video where someone compiled all the movie references that were on Seinfeld and placed them next to the episodes, all the hours of bloopers, the fact that so many in the Seinfeld cast was on various Star Trek shows (I think it's over thirty actors, maybe even more). I could go on and on..
@@jockejocke1 I’ve never owned the dvd’s but that would be cool to have the set. I bet there are some really cool extra stuff like cast commentary and backstory on the episodes.
I think Jason Alexanders interview was so detailed and raw once it hit the negotiation area. Such interesting insight on the business side of TV networks. Ultimately he does a great job of telling people to know your worth and how to be observant.
I can sum up in a few words why the show worked: We all saw a little bit of ourselves in the characters. I've had so many Larry David / Costanza moments it's unreal, as well as many of Jerry's. I even had a Krameresque friend, and I think most of us have.
No not at all.
THAT is the true magic of this show. EVERYTHING was relatable!
Jason Alexander is very well spoken.
Is anybody here a marine biologist???!!!

Interesting Jason Alexander saying they were negotiating for not having to work for the rest of their lives - in case they got typecast and couldn't get any other work.
Larry looks the same now than he did back in 98 and Julia was and still is absolutely stunning
Charlie Rose likes to hear himself ask a question.
He’s a Wannabe.
Julia Louis-Dreyfus is brilliant as Elaine, period! The fact that Charlie Rose and the shows producers gave her so little time to talk and express her thoughts about the show is a grave irony (and injustice) given that he pressed her on her discontent with the sexism at SNL. He also asked if the genius of Elaine’s character should be credited to Jerry Seinfeld. As if she was just a mule. He didn’t ask the others that question. The sexism in this interview is undeniable.
I only lasted 14 minutes because the interviewer. He cut Jerry off multiple times, was yelling over both Jerry and Larry and was tying to finish Jerry’s sentences like an obsessed girlfriend. What they were saying was interesting, Charlie needed to know when to shut his mouth.
That was Charlie. He often talked over his guests. I miss him, he was a great interviewer. But, he did overtalk his guests.
Read the comments here. Let me summarize: Michael is such a great actor, his physical comedy is genius, etc. Jason is so well spoken, he is such an intellectual man, etc. Julia? Oh she is stunning, incredibly good-looking, etc.

His aging all came during the 80s
Best sitcom ever! I saw Jason Alexander do a show in my hometown and he did a one man variety act. That man is brilliant!
The early epsiodes of Seinfeld were rough. Kudos to NBC for giving the show time to find itself.
I am one of the lucky people who did not watch the show while it was aired, so I had the chance to discover it and have a run through all nine seasons in a row. What a perfect show...
Ya me too,,I didn't get it, it was about nothing,,so I gave it another chance and my brother told me,,ya dude that's the point,, probably the greatest sitcom of all time fast-paced well acted
Amazing show, but much of the magic left with Larry. There was simply too much money at stake for the show to have ended after the peak (season 6). Nevertheless, still fair to say no other sitcom touches it.
The show actually ran a PERFECT 'bell curve.
The middle three years (seasons 4,5,6) were by FAR the peak of the show, pure Gold, straight A's. ALL of the BEST episodes came from those three years. The first 3 years were the build up (grade B) and the last three years were the tail, with (by Seinfeld standards) the worst three seasons. (grade C).
That is perfect. Because as you get older…the stuff you used to think was funny…turns stupid. But Seinfeld is always funny at all ages and I bet you felt like a whole new laughing orgasm that you never felt before…probably better than the first time you ever laughed.
@@delg1211I don’t know where this line of thinking started but it’s just so wrong that it’s laughable. Some of their best episodes of all time are in the final 3 seasons.
Summer of George, Yada Yada, The Rye, Soup Nazi…. I could go on and on.
The final seasons are fantastic.
Keep in mind, compared to most tv, a bad season of Sein is better than most.
We both know taste is subjective, certainly with humor and there is no "answer", it is just opinion, and everyone has their own. I'm not surprised some ppl prefer the last three eps where the show gets a *little* more "slap-sticky". That has never been my preference.
I think the majority opinion would lean towards my style of humor though, as the largest database of Sein opinion agrees and ranks *4 of the Top 5* in the juicy middle three seasons.
The one exception is one you mentioned and is Awesome, The Soup Nazi.
If you're interested, by voted IMDb public opinion, the top five episodes are:
1)The Contest 2)The Opposite 3)The Soup Nazi 4)The Outing and 5)The Marine Biologist 🙏🏾@@DPMusicStudio
I'm always amazed at how different Jason Alexander is from his character, perhaps more so than any other of the actors on the series.
Seinfeld hit that 1000. Every episode is extraordinary. I grew up watching honeymooners, I love Lucy, married to children, Martin, wayans bro etc. and my honest humble opinion…Seinfeld is the greatest television show in the world as to this day. There’s detail in the show that you really have to pay attention to that show you the extent of their creativity. Like in the episode when jerry is trying to buy the Saab from puddy, when jerry calls Elaine to patch things up with puddy if you look in the background you’ll see puddy just sitting there staring at nothin at all.
I just rewatched that one today! Like two hours ago! Didn't notice that one 😅

Excellent interviews. George is so right - who thinks of one of them without connecting them to the others. Always the 4 of them forever.
Actually it was Jerry who said it to him backstage.
Definitely my favorite show ever. I love watching the bloopers too.
The show has made Jerry incredibly wealthy. He is almost a billionaire.
Better getting billionaire by making people laugh and forget about the daily troubles than by selling weapons or lies. To me, Seinfeld is perfectly cashworthy. 😁😁

Watched through it 3 times so far since its been on Netflix, its so great and its an amazing comfort show for people having a bad day 🤣
I find that the greatest comedic series have three elements: great writing, great characters, and great humanity. It was certainly all there on Seinfeld. I'm not a television watcher, never mind regular series, but every once in a while, greatness comes along, shows like Mash, Cheers, and Seinfeld are three that have it all in place. GREAT interview, btw. Interesting to see these guys with their comedic guards down just being themselves. Good stuff.
Well said Frank. I think the writing is the most important thing in reference to a comedy. I also fell in love with Th Goldbergs and found most of the shows to be 💯%.
The 1st couple seasons were similar humor to Curb, the last two seasons of Seinfeld without Larry were brilliantly whacky, great change up.
you know nothing and no one cares what you think
@@TheGrader600 What's the deal with you?
Still funny some 25 years later and will most certainly resonance to people hundred years from now. The genious of Jerry and Larry combined with the comic brilians of Jason, Julia and Michael...a match made in heaven.
I came to America 1999 and my husband came 1989, so all he was talking about the show and what happened!! Now my daughter 13 wants to watch with me I told her I remember every episode, but we start form the beginning and it all comes to me
One reason the show worked was the incredible balance between Jerry, George, Elaine, and Kramer. None of them were too small, none were too big, and all funny for different reasons.
Still binging Seinfeld. I wait a year or two in between each binge. I will always love Seinfeld. ❤
I loved this show since before I could understand and relate to half the material , it gets better as you get older. I've never re watched anything more than seinfeld. I was lucky enough to see Jerry when he came to Perth WA a few years ago . It was gold jerry , gold.
This is excellent. Very well done. I liked all of it, but was pleasantly surprised in that I liked Jason Alexander's interview the most.
Still watching all episodes all over for fifth time still funny as first time. Best sitcom ever made. Thank you Netflix for showing us again.
Jason Alexander, what a guy!! So eloquent and thoughtful
Wow such a great interview with Jason Alexander.
These interviews were amazing. Thank you
