I must admit, it is very relaxing watching the trains go by; over and over again. Unfortunately, I don't have enough space for a decent layout and so I enjoy videos like this to get my "Fix" of model trains. Keep up the great work and have lots of fun. Take care and stay safe, Joe
I try to have at least one train “go by” every video. I intend to run an extended running session soon to try and shake down some of the minor faults. Whaat I do is run things with a note pad open and write down everything that goes wrong. You’d be amazed the trends you find doing that. Have a great year and enjoy the channel. 😊
Just rebuilt my layout with thick baseboards and I wanted to say it has made such a difference to the running . I wish I'd done it much earlier . The cardboard building comment was also spot on , my railway is in an unheated garage . I've had to make my buildings from wood or plastic.
@trainsofthought5071 I have been into the hobby for years, got caught up on the planning and Prototypes ect ect ect and never actually ran a single engine. Took the leap, rushed to get some track down and scenery and it's just a mess. So I am slowing down and trying to do things properly.
even after planning carefully, i still find things that need fixing. it helps tp remember real railways are a mess too! you are just modeling real life 😜. keep going and dont give up … but get something running even if it is just an engineering train! 😊
"not everything needs to get everywhere" --> oh so much this and a lot to be said for being able to always run _something_ just to relax and have that sound environment is good too, make the room nice to just relax in, likewise a garage or a shed may be good, or a loft, but if its a pain to access you will eventually stop, ideal is "can just pop in for 15 minutes" and get some entertainment, if it takes two hours to warm up its a pain one to add, reliability is key, if you find something isn't quite right, some wagons jolt slightly etc, fix it, fix it soon, don't leave it. the more you do around it the harder to fix stuff gets looks good though, :)
I LOVE the “fix it now” mentality. I DO have a drawer of vehicles that just can’t be trusted. Parts are sometimes a real issue here. Reliability is so so much to do with baseboard and track so that’s why I started with that. Thanks for watching and thanks too for the suggestion.
Not many videos about like yours and so this one is very welcome. I have always used continuous loops but I have complex trackwork and all the trains are run to a strict and complicated timetable which means a stopwatch for each train. At my age, it's good to have to be absolutely on the ball when running a session and it keeps things very interesting in a way that just running trains around does not However, I don't have to do that all the time and, as you say, sometimes taking pleasure by just running 2 trains around the double track at random is very therapeutic and without having to think about the schedule.
I’m sure I replied to this one. Weird, it’s gone! Oh well, I was saying I let the computer do the scheduling but love sorting out the mess when it all goes wrong. Keeps my old brain on its toes too! 😊 Thanks for watching.
Interesting channel and interesting points for any stage of railway modelling , I started when I retired and most of what you cover in this video relates to my set up / experience . Always something to learn from each other in this great hobby , looking forward to following . .............Peter
Thanks for following Peter. Yes, always room to learn. My biggest takeaway from previous modeling is that it’s better to do it right first time than to have to go back and do it all again later. I’ll see how much I can get done before work commitments hit and things at the railway have to slow down. 😊
Happy New Year. January 2nd here. 🤔👍 All good points. The environment isn't always something you can control because of space restrictions. Humidity here is terrible and my layouts are in the garage which has no environmental control. My card buildings are not yet deteriorating after 2 years. We have lots of power issues here too. DC layouts do not have a problem with that however. Happy modelling.
Did you varnish or clear coat the card or is it just standing up to the humidity? Yes, DC DOES have its advantages!!! DCC though, the power thing is more to do with the computers throwing a fit when the power ‘flickers’ than the actual DCC thing itself. Some of the chips are a pain but cost too much to just replace. I use both DC and DCC but mainly DCC - the benefits outweigh the obvious drawbacks. Thanks for watching.😊
@trainsofthought5071 I haven't varnished the card buildings. They are just card and seem to be quite stable with the humidity thankfully. Yeah, there are certainly restrictions with DC, but as you say, keeping it simple is a big bonus. I'm also running mostly vintage trains so am happy with what I have. 👍 Happy Trains.
Re your comment about running the trains on the wrong side.. well here in Australia that is the correct direction.. Really what does it matter which track runs in which direction ??? Real Trains run in either direction on any track at times.......... I do agree with you in the KISS format.
Ha! Well the real reason is complicated 😊 I had a block detection system that caused crashes if I ran the “other way round” so that’s what started it. You are TOTALLY right though - I can live with it, I just like playing with the trains! But I can see why some are giving me grief about it too 😜 Thanks for watching!
@@trainsofthought5071 Yes, to me it is just about playing trains and making them run when I want to see them operate..... I am only a DC person, but I see some advantages of the JMRI system. @@TimsBitsnPieces I’ve looked at JMRI but already have ‘Train Controller Silver’. It was expensive and I’m nowhere near using it to the full but I’ve had it from the start of this layout without a glitch. Somehow I lost the password 🙄 so really hope it doesn’t stop working. ha! I have a ‘cheap’ computer that I use exclusively for just that. I’m sure it’s way out of date but it runs and hasn’t really caused much trouble. When we get power cuts I sometimes have to reprogram a few locomotives for some reason but the version of ‘silver’ I’m running works and is stable so I’m not about to change anything. 😊
Hey, wondering if anybody can help me as I am going out of my mind. Got an N gauge layout, New track. Both locos just run full speed as soon as the power is on - even when controller is in neutral. I've tried 3 different power supplies and 2 different hornby controllers. Using Peco wire track which is new. Any ideas? Cheeeeeers

Some of the really old vintage trains run beautifully don’t they. Lovely.
