Trains of Thought
США
Добавлен 18 фев 2021
“Trains Of Thought” is produced in the train room I’ve build in the basement as I spend time messing about with a very English OO model railway here in America. Sometimes I’ll show you how I’ve made something, perhaps other times explain how a I’ve wired something or made a circuit work. Always, I’ll tell you what I think and how it works in real life.
My area of marginal cleverness is with electrical and electronics but I barely know the difference between a “School” and a “Castle”. Lots of fun, and a little serious thinking along the way.
A few layout details...
20 x 9 feet
Double track main line with a complex branch line.
DCC controlled
DCC linked to “Train Controller Silver”
Block detection working (but needs a sensible rework)
Two “reversing loops” that function remarkably well.
Too many hidden fiddle yard features.
A couple of short DC sections for Tram and Mine areas.
Era? Almost anything goes. 60’s?
Region? A preference for SR but again, anything goes.

44. Size and Scale. A quirky look at HO and OO
Can you use HO and OO interchangeably? Well that depends doesn’t it! Today I’m taking a look at a few ‘out of scale’ quirks. I thought you’d like to see that just because it’s a smaller scale it doesn’t mean the model being presented is physically smaller.
This iconic locomotive from the Pen. Railway used to run right beside my friend’s house. He was very proud to have seen it in full “thrash” as he put it. (Not sure what kind of noise it would have made being an electric Loco but I’m sure it made some.)
Enjoy looking around and having a little think about how to use scale and size to our advantage but always remember - compromise is essential and that makes it fun!

43. Modeling in places I can’t reach! (Finding an excuse to run the trains)

Grabbing a few minutes in the train room without “starting anything major”. Planning a playground on a placemat and having a think about a few projects to work on over the coming weeks. I do hope you all had a lovely Christmas? I shot this on “Boxing Day” - the day after Christmas. Scheming and planning, “I’ll only be a few minutes!” Lots of fun to come in the new year. Today I find a way to ge...
42 .Tips and tricks around the model railway.

A few tips and tricks I’ve used that hep me stay on top of the model railway instead if being on top of me! Taking the extra time to use a connector strip or two or number your cables saves so much time in the long run. Even having a section of track (In my case a platform) that can easily be used to program your locomotives again makes things so so much easier in the long run. My favorite thin...

“FINALLY” finished! Well, you know how that is, a model railway is NEVER finished of course! It’s as done as it’s going to be for a while at least. This time I’m mostly focusing on the electrical aspects of this build. Don’t be afraid of it, it’s nothing complicated, it’s just a LOT! I of course don’t have various bits and pieces I really would like to add but with Christmas pending I need to b...
39.Model Railway Lawn Stripes (seriously!)

The push to get the cricket pitch playable in time for the holidays! Lots of experimental, make do with what I have, trial and error scenic stuff this time. There is a plan! It’s just not always working the way it should! Thanks for coming along for the journey. Sometimes when things look terrible, wait, and give it time. The horrible wrinkled mess eventually dried out more or less flat and “pl...
38. “Let The Train Take The Strain” - Watching trains while my Wife shops

Given a chance, I’d sit on most stations for half a day watching the trains go by. When it’s a bigger station with a coffee shop, that ‘half day’ easily drifts on for longer. I don’t get that opportunity so much living here in Atlanta (they really are allergic to passenger trains around here). There is one shot of a train passing that is not Carlisle. See if you can identify which station it is...
37. Simple, cheap, effective! Model Railway LED projects.

A ‘mish-mash’ of projects all at once! Sometimes I’m a “butterfly scavenger” kinda modeler. I flit from one project to another and use whoever I can find! Honestly I like to get one thing DONE before moving on to something else when I go into the Train Room but there are days when that just isn’t possible. …waiting for paint or glue to dry, waiting for parts to arrive, having to ‘fix’ something...
36. Watching the Trams Go By - Zurich Switzerland

Zurich has traffic jams with trams! Don’t believe me? Watch this short video. The transport system seems as regimented as stereotypes would dictate with Trolly Busses even making an appearance. Most of the shots here are taken close to the main railway station. There is a separate video shot there I’ll flag somewhere so you can see thats too if you want to. Enjoy. 35. The “Sardine Special” - Memories of riding the train to school.
Просмотров 31214 дней назад
Today I’m giving the “Sardine Special” an outing. These 2 car units usually ran with other units but occasionally at the peak of rush hour, we’d be “treated” to one of these for our ride to school. Mostly we were going the “other way” than most of the London bound traffic but still, there were a LOT of us school kids! A couple of days a week I’d go the other way and ride further but always scho...
34. “Dover” Motor Luggage Van - Class 419 out for a run.
Просмотров 21914 дней назад
These versatile units are firmly stuck in my childhood memory banks. Of the 10 made, I must have seen more than half of them in a single day on occasion. Certainly successful - they only came out of service once the bulk of ferry traffic came off the rails (well that or ON the rails through the tunnel) and Dover Marine closed. Dover Marine certainly a wonderful station that didn’t make it. That...
33. Peckett Problem - Fixing a NEW Loco. Can Hornby get it together?
Просмотров 24121 день назад
What a lovely locomotive! But… oh the disappointment of a needlessly faulty model! Growing up close to the mines on the Kent Coal Field, these locos (or ones very similar to them) were a regular site on walks and bike rides to places we claimed never to be anywhere near! The debate over whether to ‘weather’ or not really throws down the gauntlet on how committed I am to actually making the trai...
32. Model Railway Cricket - Laying the Pitch
Просмотров 8521 день назад
The Cricket Match will start as soon as I stop playing trains instead of finishing the project! Seriously, the project is coming along nicely. A few bumps along the way (literally). I used the grass on a roll because the cricket pitch needed to be less ‘scattered’ and far more manicured. Generally it will look good but I’ve a few glitches to deal with. Perhaps the title should say “Training Sha...
31. My first train set - Watching the Class 20 Go By

Watching the London Transport Class 20 work effortlessly while I have a little think about my first trains set. Come on, it’s a lazy afternoon, what’s not to like? I must say, this Class 20 has become a firm favorite. I haven’t yet messed with the CV values but need to tame down the free wheeling it does. It is going to go right through the buffered one of these days!
30. Watching the Trains Go By - All Over The Place

A little bit of everything. Elizabeth Line, Heathrow Express, Windsor Shuttle, and Thames Link. The Underground train at the beginning was the first time I’d seen the new stock. All of this was shot on a visit to see Mum! (Who know visiting Mum could turn into a trains spotting adventure?) See if you can spot the Gronk give a cameo appearance. (I’m not sure where that is actually - I’m sure eve...

At 8:51, you are wondering what make your engine shed is. At 9:01 and 9:34 you can see the name "Ratio" inside the small building on the rear of the shed.
You, my friend, are amazing! 😊 I looked again and you are correct Thanks for watching so carefully
Happy New Year to you too. Have a good one. Take care and stay safe, Joe
I wonder what we’ll get up to in 2025? Ha! 😊
The foil is called shaper by woodland scenics.
Thanks. I like it! I’ve no idea where I got it (possibly in a box of bits or something). I’ll look out for it in future - the next time I’m in a model shop.
Great video and some great tips too. Keep up the good work and have fun, Joe
Thanks! ‘Father Christmas’ left me a few bits and pieces so we’ll be having some fun over the next few days. Thanks for watching.

Yes, it is! …and a wonderful place to spend an afternoon. 😊
Wonderful looking layout have a good Christmas mate all the best Colin from Mossend railway oo.
Thank you. Happy Christmas - looking forward to what comes next.
Great job, well done. Keep up the good work and enjoy the build. Take care and stay safe, Joe
LOVE hitting a good ‘stop’ point in time for Christmas. Family and friends want to see the trains and a “work in progress” upside down with tools everywhere look isn’t what they mean I don’t think. 😊 Lots of time off for a while so will doubtless get on with projects and as you say, enjoy the process. Have a great Christmas. I guess I should make a Christmasie video next!
Nice video and great looking layout. Keep up the great work. Take care and stay safe, Joe
Thanks 😊 It’s been a while since I had time to spend on the railway. I’m finding things I must have done and can’t remember why so this is going to be a fun journey. Happy Christmas to you. Ian
@@trainsofthought5071 And a very Happy Christmas to you too.
Hi just come across your video subed looking forward to seeing more happy Christmas all the best Colin from Mossend railway oo.
Thank you! Let me know what you want to see. 39 was inspired by a chat with someone in Australia less than a week ago. 40 is me messing with lights and wires but after that … I’ll just keep plodding on. Happy Christmas to you too.
This looks like the old Lima body moulding and chassis. By the standards of the time, it was quite a well-detailed model when it was released way back in 1986 and if you have the time, it responds well to the addition of some photo etched improvements, plus adding wire handrails (cut / shave the moulded ones off), etc. followed by some judicious detail painting and weathering. I have two Lima versions plus the recent Dapol version, which, is far better in terms of detail, but can be a bit hit and miss in terms of good running, apparently. The two Lima ones area awaiting the improvements mentioned, plus re-wheeling, fitment of DCC sound and lighting, etc. When I have time…!
Agreed. ‘Back then’ is a thing isn’t it? I think our imagination would have been stretched to the limit if we could have known what the years would do to the hobby. DCC where you can easily park trains on the same track? Wow. Fans that turn then fans that are motorized? Seriously? I mean some of the things that can be done these days is nuts. … given time and money! Thats the thing - time and/or money. Being content to imagine sometimes has to do.😊
Ive seen 419s on CEP/BEP 12 car sets used to propel boat trains where no 3rd rail is available at ports/docks
Very versatile units. We used to go off down to the Dover Marine Station to watch the trains long before it closed - always something interesting to see there - but access to the ferries and the REAL fun operation was restricted of course. We’d get glimpses only and on the rare occasion we’d be riding the boats we’d hang over the side watching the trains. Fun. The tunnel was the end of all that of course. ‘Progress’ and nostalgia doing their usual dance.
Hi there. Great work video 78 in my series I attempted a similar approach. I’m pretty happy with it will come back later. But I did buy the larger roll of grass to ensure it covered the base and regarding the adhesive cable holders falling off. Well that’s the oil on the wood I use little d clips you see in various wiring videos they are cheaper than the adhesive ones and will be there til I die. I’m waiting with bated breath on your final result. For me in an earlier video I put in an airport with runway and taxiway lights but that is on opposite side of room as they are two different scales. Keep up the great work look forward to seeing more.
thanks. for. the thoughts and tips. appreciated! 😊 I’m a bit of a butterfly/scavenger - i flit from one thing to another and use what I can find without spending a fortune. yes, the cable things are a poor choice. the one advantage - I have them! I’ve worked on electrical and electronic projects in the past and so have a bigger ‘junk’ box than most. Sadly very few model shops around here that are well stocked, ‘making do’ or waiting ages is how things tend to be.
@ I completely understand and you are right regarding the model shops you’ve gotta take what you can do and as I’m starting to discover more and more of the build, I just have to knuckle down and build it myself and let’s be fair. There’s a reason I never built my own house. Stay safe and keep enjoying the journey. I look forward to seeing that progress.
@@josefbuckland thanks The guy running our ‘local’ model shop (it’s almost an hour away) is down to very little left and I think he’s really wishing it was gone. It used to be that you could walk into places and ask how and they’d tell you and sell you the bits to do it.
@ same here ours is only open for a few hours a week and just can’t get stock in to which I’m going to do a video on soon. Australia has still not had woodland Scenics delivery to distributors since who knows so I bought all the last light hubs from every model shop in Australia and now I just buy direct from WS in the states but that means IE a box of 4 light hubs for $20 each so 80 usd and then some 150 to send a package half the size of a box of tissues I’m paying about 300 Australian dollars. Locally my supplier can sell it all to me and I will get change out of 100 (if they had stock) but like you say it forces us to be creative. I find it heartbreaking that in the year 2024 with all the knowledge and technology that we have why does walking into a model shop some 40-50 years ago seem so glamorous. Stay safe.
The lighting side of things (as well as electronics) I don’t have trouble with. I worked in electronics for a long time and although things have changed a lot - they really are simple(ish) these days. I just found “micro LEDs” readily available and they are so small you can sneak them in just about anywhere. one of the next videos I’ll do will show me messing about with that (and getting glue everywhere) Ha!
You will get there. Built many of these 3rd and 4th rail on my knockers lane modules .
Thanks. I haven’t found ‘z’ locally but it seemed to be smaller than it needed to be but if it works I’ll try it. I’ll give it another go of course. Thanks for the encouragement. Nearest model shop a way away - it’s a Treck. Maybe will get there later this week.
You need to create the fold down on the end of3rd and 4 th rail pieces. After you have threaded the pots on. 24 to a standard length of z track . Always can remove pots if not needed.
I’m going to get back to that whole thing in the next few weeks. SO many projects. 😊 I’m loving that the underground is finally reasonably represented with ready to run.
You have to bend down the end of the rail and you have not gluded some of the pots to the sleepers down all the way you can see on the video. Middel rail don't use pots glue down file back of rail and scrach sleepers to key the surfaces and l used the supper glue spray 😊. You should have a 1mm gap it's good not to use the spacers, it's a hard job to do but it's worth it. The only job harder is point rodding, All the best Colin from Mossend railway oo.
@@colinwarrior I’m going to give it a try. Thanks for the advice.
I just came across this video ... Subscribed!!! 👍
Thanks. 😊 I’ve been around a while with the railway but only recently decided to really pay attention to sharing the journey as it were.
@trainsofthought5071 I'm 54 years old, my dad was a model railroader his entire life so there was probably a train in my hand the day I was born 🤣
@@XBOXShawn12thman I grew up in England. Trains very different there. Fascinated by them but don’t know when it started.
Thanks for posting. Really enjoyed watching!
