Without You is probably his most famous song. Shows his singing ability. Jump into the Fire was a jam. Harry was working in studio right under the noses of music industry as a songwriter. They eventually heard his singing abilities and hit pay dirt.
Literal fire! Phenomenal bass, guitar drums and vocals, one the great classics. And you need to check out Without You, Nilsson's smash hit, and also Coconut.
Daniel, Harry Nilsson was one of the greatest singer-songwriters of the 1970's, but unlike contemporaries like Harry Chapin and Jim Croce, he enjoyed major commercial success without performing in major concerts or touring. Ironically his two biggest hits were Everybody's Talking written by Fred Neil and featured in the film Midnight Cowboy, that was No. 6 in the US in 1966 and Without You written by Pete Ham and Tom Evans of Badfinger that was the No. 4 single in 1972. His song One was recorded by Three Dog Night and went to No. 5 in 1969. His song Best Friend was the theme for the ABC tv series The Courtship of Eddie's Father starring Bill Bixby from 1969-72. Besides Jump Into The Fire and Without You from Nilsson Schmilsson(1971) his song Coconut was also a hit as was a earlier song Me And My Arrow. Nilsson became a drinking buddy of John Lennon during his separation from Yoko Ono in 1973 in California. After Lennon's murder in 1980, he became a gun control advocate. Nilsson owned the flat in London where Cass Elliot(Mama Cass of the Mamas and the Papas) died in 1974 and Keith Moon(drummer of the Who) died in 1978. Harry Nilson died of a heart attack at the age of 52 in 1994.
I always felt bad for Harry! His biggest hits as a performer were songs that he didn't write, and his biggest hits as a songwriter were others covering them!
"Everybody's talking" (#6) from the movie Midnight Cowboy (Dustin Hoffman's 4th movie and Jon Voigt's 3rd movie - won the Best Picture Oscar and both Hoffman and Voigt were nominated for Oscars for Best Actor) and "Without You" (#1) were his two top hits. "Coconut" was a bit of a silly song that somehow made #8
Harry Nilsson! Two words for you, Daniel: "The Point." It's a story made of a collection of (trippy) songs linked by narration. Either the album or the animated movie made from it (narrated by Ringo Starr) are a real treat.
Great to see/hear your reaction to Harry Nilsson. He has so many great songs and you'll find that his vocal range is far broader than you hear on this song.
He did a movie with Ringo Starr, "Son of Dracula" - If you can find the original vinyl soundtrack album, it's worth a couple of $$$. Check out the song, "Daybreak" - perfect for vampires.
Loved Harry Nilsson. He was a very prolific songwriter. Died at the age of 55. His biggest hit that he sang himself was Can't Live Without You, which was so overplayed that people began to mock it. The first time you hear it, it hits you in the feels hard. He wrote a lot of hits for other artists. His animated movie "The Point" was a big hit and became part of the youth culture. His song "Everybody's Talkin" was used in the movie "Midnight Cowboy"'
Outstanding! I haven't heard this song for more than 40 years, or is it 45? The memories come flooding back like it was yesterday. Ah...the power of music! Thanks :)
There is a great documentary "Who is Harry Nilsson (and why is everyone talking about him)"? Well worth watching. Daniel I remind you of my two choices for you to react to. Angelina Jordan's cover of "I Put a Spell On You" and "Nature's Way" by Spirit.
Spirit was awesome. Natures way is an excellent song. Too bad their reputation was tarnished by greedy descendants of Randy California unsuccessfully suing Led Zeppelin for plagiarism.
His music was so eclectic. I love this song. My favorite is "Without You " The Coconut Song" & "You're Breaking My Heart" the list goes on.Loved him for 50 years. RIP HARRY🙏🕊✌🌻🌻
Not sure how you can stop that song in the middle. An entire generation would get lost in euphoria, dancing to this song. Now play it again LOUD and DANCE!And the lyrics are both about his failing second marriage and also about never escaping the demons...his were from his father abandoning him as a child.
New subscriber. I'm 69 and remember Nilsson as a presence on the radio during my high school years(The best years of recorded rock) of 67-71. He and the Beatles were close associates.
I love to yh a younger generation's reaction, and opportunity to hear great artists and songs from this time in music. Harry Nilsson was a fantastic artist, and had some demons in his life, career choices, ruined relationships, .. this is what I hear in this song. My favorite from Harry Nilsson- RIP
Peter Frampton and Ringo Starr didn't play on this track. They played on a different Nilsson album. And Klaus Voorman didn't play bass on this track - he played some guitar here. Herbie Flowers played bass and Jim Gordon played drums. (John Lennon produced a different album, George Harrison played on a Nilsson album, as well as Ringo Star, Klaus Voorman and Peter Frampton.
Daniel, you may be interested in a Nilsson song called Good Old Desk. During an interview he said it was about a higher power( G.O.D.) but later said he was joking. He still left doubt as to whether or not is was a joke.
Understand that Harry s voice was 3 1/2 to 4 octaves until his album Pussycats when he and fellow Hollywood Vampie (Google it) got into a screaming contest. People have told stories of blood on the microphone from Harry. His voice was never the same. Harry was epic in his alcohol / drug use...who else could have been responsible for John Lennon being thrown out of the Troubador.? Seriously, view the Documenrtry Who Is Harry Nilsson and Why is Everybody Talking About Him? As others have said...Best breakup song ever ....You’re Breaking my Heart.
Thank you Daniel for starting a Nilsson branch! There’s such depth in his work. The roots go deep! Of course like all are saying “Everybody’s Talking” and “Without You” are awesome and his most known hits. Others that are incredible are “Coconut” (just fun!), “Remember” (highlights his beautiful voice), and my personal favorite “The Moonbeam Song” (lyrics that paint a vivid picture). Enjoy!
The bass player sounded like he was detuning his bass as he played, very cool. I love this song for its touch of madness. Great reaction and I think you nailed the meaning too. Thanks. Maybe try “Man-erg” by Van Der Graaf Generator, which also has a touch of madness.
'Doctor, ain't there nothin I can take, I said Doctor, to relieve this bellyache? You Put the lime in the coconut and drink them both together, Put the lime in the coconut then you'll feel better. Put the lime in the coconut and drink 'em both down, Put the lime in the coconut and call me in the morning' Yes, it's a silly song, but an earworm of extraordinary proportions, lol!.
Many mention Everybody’s Talking At Me which I believe he got a Grammy for... but NOTE: it was written by underrated Fred Neil, who never achieved commercial success, mostly having others sing his songs. He was reluctant to tour. Spent the last 3 decades of his life involved with dolphin preservation. His song Dolphins was recorded by many; my favorite is by Tim Buckley (who I am passionate about. I love love love Jeff Buckley as well.) Everybody’s Talkin....became a hit after being featured in Midnight Cowboy, one of my favorite films. Back to Nilsson: I so loved Me and My Arrow. From his album and accompanying animated film (with voices including Ringo Starr and Dustin Hoffman) The Point about a round-headed boy in a pointy world.
THE BEST pop singer ever. He did this and he did A Little Touch Of Schmilsson In The Night, a beautiful production of American standards. 4.8 octave range.
Until this I only knew 2 songs by Nilsson both ballady types Without You and Everybody's Talkin, Everbody Talkin is my favourite, always a song on the tape for vacation travels, great vocals, he has such a beautiful and powerful voice that really shows on Without You, which I was expecting here, I didn't recognise him in this vocal, the guitars & drums got me to come back for a second listen, I need to check out more of his heavier music, I love discovering knew old stuff .
Harry Nilsson's debut album for RCA, Pandemonium Shadow Show is packed full of treats, especially an off beat version of the the Beatles, "You Can't Do That" where he referenced about 27 different Beatles songs. It's brilliant, give it a go.
He was an incredible singer and songwriter but a troubled dude. He didn’t always make great choices when it came to his career. His work runs the gamut from really sweet and pure to really weird and dark.
Another musician who died WAY too young. I am old enough to remember a TV special called "Me and My Arrow." All music by Nilsson. As mentioned by others, if you want the very best of Nilsson, try "Without You". As a kid I sang along with this one, thinking it was the deepest thing I'd ever known. You get older and realize that it actually wasn't, but it is still a well constructed pop tune. Anyway, thumbs up! EDIT: Actually, "Me and My Arrow" was from "The Point". Had to go and look that up, sorry if causing confusion.
Nillson had an incredible voice, he was also a great songwriter, and his songs spanned several genres. Fotr example, "Lime in the Coconut" was a silly novelty song and could not be more different from "Jump Into the Fire". He was the songwriter for an animated movie called "The Point" that seems to be forgotten now but which was a really nice children's movie. He also wrote the theme song for a TV show called "The Courtship of Eddie's Father" that is a wonderfully melodic song ("People let me tell you about my best friend"). He almost never performed live so there are almost no videos of him performing. A documentary about his life and career from 2006 is worth checking out if you are interested in finding out more about him.
Nilsson's a treasure! Left us too early! Other more famous Nilsson songs you'd find fun to review: 'Everybody's Talking', 'Without You', and my personal favorite, 'Coconut'! :)
he sings it in the most important mysic sequence of the trippy Son of Dracula movie. It's worth a watcj with an open mind. He sings Without You in it too
Harry was edgy for his time. Or maybe just a little crazy. I loved his music. This whole album is worth a listen especially in one sitting. The Point is remarkable. Only 28 minutes for the whole album, and I recommend listening to the album, not watching the video. Let your imagination paint it for you first. 😉
He dug it then. How could you not? It's a thing of its time with a drum solo right in the middle but the riff is perfect and the echo and the general feel of the thing brings a sort of mystery. I love it. Of course it feautured in the film Goodfellas...in the right moment I might add.
I hadn't heard this song in years and kind of wandered into your channel after viewing the official version. It was really gratifying watching someone react to a first-time hearing by an artist I used to listen to many decades ago. I think his darker songs are the better ones and yeah, they totally rocked.
You made my day with this one! The bass is sic!! How low can you go??!! On a whole different wave length check out Nilsson's Everybody's Talkin' from the soundtrack of the movie, Midnight Cowboy.
Just checked, and the whole of "The Point" is on RUclips. I remember seeing it when it first came out, and there would be worse ways to waste an hour. Also check out "Without You" for sure.
Harry Nilsson was the Beatles' favorite contemporary musician, to the point where Ringo Starr and George Harrison... I am 99 percent sure sat in for parts of Son of Schmilsson. (Admittedly I'm less certain about George, but one of the album credits is a 'Richard Snare.' Contract issues meant it had to be under pseudonyms.) Ringo also provided what I consider to be the best narration track for The Point, which is a lovely little anti-discrimination fable... that Nilsson cooked up while he was tripping, and the animation reflects that. I grew up watching it and adore the whole package, but I have also genuinely alarmed people by having them watch it. XD For songs with a little more lyrical meat, try "Joy," "Spaceman" or especially "Ambush." I also adore "Take 54" and "You're Breaking My Heart," but they're not... the most PG-rated songs out there. "Think About Your Troubles" and "POV Waltz" are my favorites from The Point, but I honestly recommend sitting down with the whole thing. There is also a non-zero chance you've heard "Coconut" before.
Literally anything off of the Nilsson Schmilsson album is great--when I was in high school everybody and their brother had a copy of that album--so I'm puzzled as to why more reactors haven't done much of his music, it's that good. Nilsson was an amazing vocalist--truly extraordinary. You see more of that ability in "Without You", "Early in the Morning" and "Down". For one of the most fun songs ever, do "Coconut", for interesting lyrics, "The Moonbeam Song". It also might interest you to listen to the track that immediately follows "Jump Into the Fire", and , BTW, concludes the album--"I'll Never Leave You". Sounds like what he may have written the morning after.
Jim Gordon: read his bio. One of the best and most successful session drummer for many years... played with everyone from Clapton to Zappa. Undiagnosed schizophrenia caused him to kill his mom (but during the preceding 20 years, people knew he had problems). He got 16-life. He was up for parole 20 years ago but has been denied parole at least 10 times. He backed many significant rock recordings in the ‘60s and ‘70s including Carly Simon’s Your So Vain, and he’s still getting royalties from “Layla,” which he co-wrote with Clapton. Such a sad end to a gifted musician.
Didn't get to hear much of Harry's amazing voice in this one. His early albums are so sweet and sad, kind of a throwback... In 1969, while Zepplin was busy furthering heavy metal and Pink Floyd was making psychodelia popular, Harry was recording a song about getting a puppy, so he could have a friend. Such a gentle man. I could go on for hours about this guy -- he had a very tragic life. Many of his songs are so bittersweet - Here's a bit of trivia most Nilsson lovers already know: Both Mama Cass Elliot (Mamas and Papa) and Keith Moon (The Who) died in his London rented apartment. He got rid of that place rather soon after that.. Cheers! 'Who is Harry Nilsson and Why is Everybody Talking About Him' is an excellent video about his exploits. Many famous friends telling tales. (Yoko Ono and Mickey Dolenz (Monkees) come into mind offhand.) More Trivia: Blood Sweat and Tears covered his song 'Without Her'. Three Dog Night did 'One'. Randy Newman did 'Sail Away'. More Trivia: Nilsson's own Primal Scream version of 'Sail Away' almost ruined his vocal cords, and thus his career. More Trivia: Klaus Voorman (bass on this song) created the cover of Beatles Revolver. More Trivia: That is Nilsson in the Gorilla suit for the video for 'Coconut' which you MUST have heard at some time. Lyrics seem silly, but they are quite coherent. (hint hint) More Trivia: There was a major earthquake in LA the day of his funeral. Nilsson was quite influencial, and has really affected me at times. Ummm - might be a little hard to react to, with the orchestral backings and all -- seems a bit old fashioned now. (Sigh)
I HAD A GREAT FRIEND. WHO HE, AND I LISTEN TOO EVERYTHING IN THE 60'S AND 70'S AS WE GREW UP TOGETHER. HARRY NILSSON, "JUMP INTO THE FIRE" WAS JUST A FUN JAM.. HE HAD GOTTEN "NILSSON SON OF SMILSSON" (DON'T REMEMBER IF THIS SPELLED RIGHT) LOL ANOTHER COUPLE OF TUNES BY HARRY, "WITHOUT YOU" "YOUR BREAKING MY HEART"
Harry is certainly a gem that flew under the radar in the late 60's and 70's . You certainly did choose an obscure song of his to debut . his huge hits were "Cant live if living is without you" "one is the loneliest number" , "me and my arrow" "coconut song" ..he had a ton of gems .. Just as a little odd side note . Harry wrote the musical soundtrack to the 1980 live action film "Popeye" starring Robbin Williams and Shelly Duvall. If you watch the film , notice the scene where Robbin as Popeye is boxing the large man toward the end of the film . You will notice the Sweethaven band playing off to one side. The band leader is Harry Nilsson's bass player Klaus Voorman. By the way you have to try the song "You're breaking my heart' from his second record "Nilsson son of Schmilsson" NOTE listen to it before playing it live...you will see why you can never play it on You Tube but it will give you insight into Harry's unusual sense of humor.
Be forewarned that one is not suitable for all audiences. I had to play that one low back in the day, so my folks wouldn't confiscate my albums, but the whole album is great stuff.
Without You is probably his most famous song. Shows his singing ability. Jump into the Fire was a jam. Harry was working in studio right under the noses of music industry as a songwriter. They eventually heard his singing abilities and hit pay dirt.
Harry had been a known quantity in the industry for years by the time this album came out. The Beatles loved him back in the 60's.
Nilsson Schmilsson!!!!! A great and mostly overlooked talent. Thanks for covering him brother.
Without You is a must, and the Lime In The Coconut song is a fun one!
Wow cool you found some Nilsson. Great singer song writer
I miss Harry! Great songwriter, amazing musician. Enjoy!
It's impossible to listen to this song without bobbing your head !
Thank you for playing this song so more people can hear it!!!! This tune just rocks!!! He was known as the 5th Beatle.
Literal fire! Phenomenal bass, guitar drums and vocals, one the great classics. And you need to check out Without You, Nilsson's smash hit, and also Coconut.
I believe Peter Frampton plays guitar on one of Nillson’s albums.

The Midnight Cowboy soundtrack is a trip, pretty freakin' awesome.
Harry Nilsson! Two words for you, Daniel: "The Point." It's a story made of a collection of (trippy) songs linked by narration. Either the album or the animated movie made from it (narrated by Ringo Starr) are a real treat.
IIRC narrated by Dustin Hoffman!
@@oldarpanet Hoffman was likely the narrator on the broadcast, but the VHS and CD releases have Ringo narrating.
@@mattshaw6180 Thanks! I did not know that.
And when it was shown on TV again in the 80s, Alan Thicke narrated it. No idea why. That was actually the first version I was introduced to.
@@mattshaw6180 Weird, I've only ever heard Nilsson on the record narrating!
First listen here, as well.
That was incredible.
A great, rather deep Nilsson track you'd probably love is Gotta Get Up. But Everybody's Talking and Without You are musts.
"Gotta Get Up" was the flip side of "Without You" on the 45.
"Your a wizard Harry!"⚡ More Harry please!
He WAS Lennon’s drinking buddy during John Lennon’s “lost Weekend”....2 years long.
He blew out his amazing voice screwing around with Lennon.
This is brand new to me and if folks are saying this wasn't his best song man I'd like to listen to some more thanks for putting this forward Daniel
Duit.

The memories come flooding back like it was yesterday. Ah...the power of music!
Thanks :)
Another one that catapults me back in time he wrote so many great tracks.
So glad you've discovered Nilsson! I recommend "One," "Without You," "Gotta Get Up," and "Everybody's Talking."
There is a great documentary "Who is Harry Nilsson (and why is everyone talking about him)"? Well worth watching.

Spirit was awesome. Natures way is an excellent song. Too bad their reputation was tarnished by greedy descendants of Randy California unsuccessfully suing Led Zeppelin for plagiarism.
Nilsson"s "You're Breakin' My Heart" takes less than 7 seconds to get to the point.
I wear glasses, 😆 love that song so much.
Wow, Didn’t know he did this song. So different from his softer stuff. My favorite song from him is Everbody’s Talking
His music was so eclectic. I love this song. My favorite is "Without You " The Coconut Song" & "You're Breaking My Heart" the list goes on.Loved him for 50 years. RIP HARRY🙏🕊✌🌻🌻
Best reaction video for this song that I've seen - probably the best reaction video I've seen for ANY song. I'm a big Nilsson fan, so thanks.
" oh my " " turn it up" Daniel, you're a trip !! You make me smile when you get groovin' to the music lol 😃
Omg! You really tapped into some gold with Nillson. Please react to "Without You" to really appreciate his vocal talent. Thanks!👏
"Ode To Billy Joe" and now "Jump Into the Fire" by Nilsson. Thanks for reviewing great tunes that many reactors never get to.

Never seen Goodfellas?
Put the Lime in The Coconut...and Eat it All Up...; One Is The Loneliest Number; Everybody’s Talking, Without You”. he was a great Artist!
If you saw "You've Got Mail" Harry's singing "Over The Rainbow" at the end.

This whole album is great. Harry had a beautiful voice.
Tbf it's used really well in Goodfellas. Definitely a movie you'd want to see if you haven't yet.
Jim Gordon on drums. The number of songs that he played on in this time period is mind boggling.
Playing the e string with the tuning nut. An early example recording tech and the bass growing as a primary instrument.
RCA years box set.almost everything!!
I hadn't heard this song in years and kind of wandered into your channel after viewing the official version. It was really gratifying watching someone react to a first-time hearing by an artist I used to listen to many decades ago. I think his darker songs are the better ones and yeah, they totally rocked.
Harry don't get nearly enough love. Thanks for featuring this tasty little number.
You're breakin' my heart
You're tearing it apart....
Do NOT analyze the rest... it ain't pretty.
A personal listen... no need to react.

You should listen to Blue Sky by Allman Brothers.... great solos by Dicky and Duane
A beautiful song
@@Hartlor_Tayley yes it is!!!
XD
For songs with a little more lyrical meat, try "Joy," "Spaceman" or especially "Ambush." I also adore "Take 54" and "You're Breaking My Heart," but they're not... the most PG-rated songs out there. "Think About Your Troubles" and "POV Waltz" are my favorites from The Point, but I honestly recommend sitting down with the whole thing.
There is also a non-zero chance you've heard "Coconut" before.
When the Beatles were asked who their favorite American Rock Group was, each answered, "Harry Nilsson"
I would love to watch your examination of Nilsson's lyrics in the song "Coconut". Lol...
This is great but there's so much more to harry.!!! X
Do "Coconut"!
Nilsson was an artist whose voice sounded different on a lot of his songs. It's like those people who look different in 5 separate photos.
Harry Nilsson- "Coconut" and "Without You"
Thanks nilsson 4 ever
John Lennon and Harry Nilsson were friends, read about their "lost weekend".
Many of his songs are so bittersweet -
Here's a bit of trivia most Nilsson lovers already know: Both Mama Cass Elliot (Mamas and Papa) and Keith Moon (The Who) died in his London rented apartment. He got rid of that place rather soon after that.. Cheers!
'Who is Harry Nilsson and Why is Everybody Talking About Him' is an excellent video about his exploits. Many famous friends telling tales. (Yoko Ono and Mickey Dolenz (Monkees) come into mind offhand.)
More Trivia: Blood Sweat and Tears covered his song 'Without Her'.
(hint hint)
More Trivia: There was a major earthquake in LA the day of his funeral.
Nilsson was quite influencial, and has really affected me at times. Ummm - might be a little hard to react to, with the orchestral backings and all -- seems a bit old fashioned now. (Sigh)
Nilsson covered Newman’s Sail Away, not the other way around. But a lot of the other stuff was unknown. Thanks
Great music is undeniable, you just have to " Turn on your Radio". 🎵🎵🎶🎸🥁😊🥁🎸🎶🎵🎵
He was the Beatles favorite American band
Don't forget his reworking of "Girlfriend" into "Best Friend", for the theme song for the TV show "Courtship Of Eddie's Father".
That was a really well-produced album.
Thanks to Richard Perry.
Please check out YOU’RE BREAKING MY HEART.
Yes! Son of Schmilsson album. I know I garbled that spelling 😆. For 45 years I've been wild about Harry.
Be forewarned that one is not suitable for all audiences. I had to play that one low back in the day, so my folks wouldn't confiscate my albums, but the whole album is great stuff.
