Nigeria is different from Canada, not worse than Canada. What you can get in Nigeria, you cannot get in Canada. What you can get in Canada, you cannot get in Nigeria. At the end of the day, you have to define what success means to you and your family and choose the location that best suits it. Nigerians are driven by trends and/or peer pressure. Because Ola's son did it, and Nkechi's daughter did it, then my son Ikpong must do it. Canada is not for everyone, to be honest. Nigerian government should focus on improving basic infrastructure and this Japa craze willl end.

I think the biggest issue with Nigeria is insecurity. Life is not all about money, but with the current insecurity, I believe one is better off relocating if they can. Also, imagine the health impact of generator fumes. Please let us be honest with ourselves. This is a country where people are kidnapped in broad day light.

This is what i say to people in my home country who keep discouraging others from seeking opportunities else where. In Canada or the US you can choose to give yourself a comfortable life. It does not have to be a life of luxury, but you can have a nice place to live and all the necessities you need. In my country people think we leave or left because we were looking for riches. Most people are looking for good schools for their children, jobs which we do not need connections for, different opportunities and activities for themselves and their children. An example for a child to be in dance class it does not take an arm and a leg. Thats just a small example. Swimming classes in my country are for people with money
Over here you don't need much money to be in a swim club. YMCA gives classes at a low price or even free for families who are on low income. At least those with less money are still able to enjoy some activities. Challenges will always be there but as long as one lives within their means and only focuses on what their most important needs are, you will be happy.

This was very well deconstructed. I agree with all the points made. Housing cost/ income to expense and tax ratio doesn't make sense in Canada. The average life bubble is maddening so someone has to be really strategic to be prosperous... but so far Canada has good opportunities, stability and an organized system so that trumps alot. Buuuuut as far as the value for money goes as an upper middle class + within both countries... you'll enjoy that money more in Nigeria cause cheaper labor, goods, lower tax etc

I thought Nigeria’s tax system is also progressive and Pay As You Earn. The difference is the tax rate. What probably extends your income as an above middle income earner is you can shop with the road side smalltime retailer and get things a lot cheaper in most instances in Nigeria. If you shop in Nigeria’s equivalent of Walmart and those big retail stores, your income will disappear fast as well. It is a quality of life difference that makes day to day expense higher in Canada and then your taxes become unreal when you start earning above 100k per year. I think Nigeria’s max tax for income is less than 30percent. So some people do pay “heavy” taxes in Nigeria.

My own 2 cents above trying to live abroad its to view it as a life experience.
It’s better for a family that’s already settled in Nigeria. For example a family that own their own home with no need to dispose of everything they own.
It’s easier to rent a home abroad once PR had been obtained and just move to give the children a different perspective to life. It’s not a bad idea at all.
It’s beautiful even as an adult to navigate life from a new perspective of living abroad.
The biggest lesson is to know that you can survive with much less of everything. Even nice oha soup would become a luxury 😂😂😂😂

As someone who has lived in Canada for over 20 years, Canada has drastically changed in the last 10 years and things are only getting worse. I have lived in Saskatoon, Calgary, Vancouver and Montreal. I have family in Edmonton and friends in Toronto. To give you an example, 10 years ago an average Canadian could afford to buy a house or condo in ANY cities in Canada. An average person working full time at Macdonad could afford to buy a house. As of now, if you are single person with a degree or not and making less than 60K /yr you CANNOT afford to buy a home in ANY major cities in Canada. Buying a home in Canada is slowly becoming impossible for most people unless you want to live in small cities which has nothing to offer in terms of job opportunities. Nobody wants to live in small cities or towns because there are no job opportunities there. Even Canadian people themselves do not like those small cities yet alone immigrants. Canada is only good for those coming from poor countries who were poor to begin with. If you were rich in your country or coming from other advanced countries from Europe, Canada is not a place to be. A lot of Europeans and Asians are starting to live Canada to go live in the US, since the cost of living in the US is better. Plus, the US has lots of highly paid job opportunities.

This is so true. Things have really changed. I also say people who are hard working in Africa and struggling to put 3 square meals on the table would benefit in Canada if they come with no expectations but to find work and live a normal life. Kids can go to school and join activities that might be a win for those who are struggling to get school fees back in Africa.
But ya, I remember when houses used to cost $250k. In 2013, that's how much a house cost in a new development. We didn't even have youtube to advise us, remember? We used to go from networking events to networking events. I wonder if networking events are still a thing. I remember my first job in 2009,I was a file clerk at a community health center making $16 an hour. Considering minimum wage being $10.50 and an hour those days. My salary was good. My rent was $600/month for a one bedroom. Things were good then. Actually, things were not so bad until 2020

I second it with my full chest. Only a poor or middle to low income class Nigerians would appreciate living in Canada or outside of Nigeria. But if you are earning serious money in Nigeria, do not leave. And I mean it. You can afford driver, cook, nanny....this lifestyle is only reserved for the 0.05% in Canada. Many Canadian diplomats prefer to live in Nigeria than in the Canada that Nigerians love to Japa to. Asians and other groups are leaving the country en masse.

My dear Adaeze, I had to respond to you, first not every Province in Canada are the same, just like in America, I have lived both places and still have a lots of family all over Canada, I can tell you the benefits when it comes to the Government helping their people, food, and many other things are better than Nigeria. I do agree if You are Rich in Nigeria then it is better but from middle class and under it is Not Better.

      "Bestest" comment...
I relocated to Australia and it's the best decision of life. I left almost nothing in Nigeria and today, I am in a better place to help family members and plan better for my life and 2 kids. Today, I earn, safe and got few investment ongoing in Nigeria.
I deliberately avoided Canada after doing my comparisons of opportunities in my field; Civil Engineering, weather conditions etc.
I worked the first 4 months in an assemblage factory but now work in my profession as a Civil Engineer in a role as Project Manager.

Yes, abroad is difficult, totally agreed, not for a lazy person that feels entitled to what he/she doesn’t deserve, But Compared to the percentage of people in Nigeria doing well without Juju, fraud, Olosho, Manipulation, lying and cheating in various businesses, selling fake and cheap goods online very expensive…. Naija na jungle where 90% of people are looking for whom to pepper, destroy, defraud, steal, bully, laugh at.. Stop the comparison, everything no be money. Only one thing needs to be adjusted abroad and everything will be %100 fine(Only House Rent)
Things to be adjusted in Nigeria pass 50….

Wow your sister's daycare is terrible, or maybe it's the province because in Ontario the ECEs potty train your kids in the toddler and preschool rooms. Both my kids were potty trained by the staff and we also continue the process at home. If your child is not potty trained by the time they enter kindergarten and they're not developmentally behind, teachers will not change their diapers, you will have to come change them as needed. Canada is expensive though that is correct.

In Canada be ready to work and you will get paid, and the taxes in Canada are high and you get to see what your taxes is being used for before your eyes, there’s no mis management of public funds etc. you must be multi millionaire to be able to live a good quality life in Nigeria.

The truth is, many of them are just choosing to see the positives since that is what they chose. Same with those of us living in Nigeria. Intact. The negatives in Nigeria are beyond your control to a larger extent that the ones in Canada. So I really don't blame those who want to leave. Nigeria has shown many people premium shege

I also believe that it's ones choice to jappa for good reasons not because of your friend's decisions because I'm seeing some people in this RUclips street who seem to have moved because they saw some people moving and now stranded because they never did a proper research and they also don't have a Why? They want to move from Nigeria. I was just saying to my Husband who is from Nigeria how much I love South Africa my origanal country, I don't have nothing that makes want to move and telling him that I'm willing to move to only Nigeria when things are ok there. Sometimes parents are being so unfair to their kids because you wod find that they don't even care how their kids feel about this jappa business and the kids end up having recentment towards their parents. With regards to the jobs I don't see the Uber business as something low because those people are making a lot but when you are not in the business you won't know
