Yeah, can we talk about how the original Belle was reading and didn't really mean to get in anyone's way...and usually didn't. Meanwhile, this Belle, not distracted, nearly stomps all over those girls' clean laundry just because she felt the need to walk on the side of the well.
The library scene highlights what's wrong with the movie over all. Comparing it with the animated version. The difference with the chemistry between the couples is night and day.
I have so many issues with the library scene. In the original, Beast shows her the library because he’s starting to develop feelings for her. He wants to do something nice for her and the servants remembered her interest upon hearing about the library. He’s a little nervous but excited to see what she thinks of it. He’s being kind of playful with building anticipation. And she’s overjoyed by the library and thankful when he says it’s hers. In the remake, she mentions liking Romeo and Juliet. And he scoffs! He’s like “ugh women and their romances there are much better books to read!” He shows her the library to show off. Not because he shares any interests with her. Not because he decided to be nice to her. But to show off his BLE (big library energy). And when he sees how she reacts to it, he’s like “well uh… I guess you can borrow some if you want.” It really destroys the moment that they begin to fall in love and I hate it!!!
This was the moment when I almost turned off the movie. It ruined EVERYTHING. The writers, director, Emma, the higher-ups and anyone else who had the ability for input...what were they thinking? It's like they'd never seen the original movie. It honestly makes me think none of them have ever been in a normal, happy and loving relationship if they thought that was an improvement in any way. The romance was just thrown completely out the window. I don't think I was ever so peeved off about a movie before.
Their chemistry or lack there of is the issue I have with the remake. It seemed forced and so out of place, and it was so obvious in the scene where Belle expresses her love for the Beast. I didn’t believe it because there was no genuine connection between them. What’s disappointing is that the remake focused on Gaston and Lafou’s complicated relationship throughput the film instead of the two protagonists the film is based on.
Belle is my favorite Disney heroine: her strength lies in her kind and gentle nature. She is brave and stands her ground when she has to, but she is also cheerful and sweet. I wish she had been played by someone who understood that a woman can be gentle, feminine and sweet without being weak.
The problem imo seems to be more than in modern movies women are not allowed to be kind and gentle, that it's seen as a weakness. Seems like most have this misunderstanding when usually actually being kind takes lots of strength, someone angry and rudeis actually weak but specially in women rather rudeness is unfortunately seen as a strength (at least what I have noticed in more modern Disney movies).

On the topic of the blue dress… why are other townspeople also wearing blue? In the original film Belle and beast are the only characters who wear blue and it really makes Belle visually stand out in the town 😢
Emma Watson was obviously given way too much creative control over how she wanted to portray Belle despite her misinformed views about corsets and the like. She was used to getting her way when she was Hermione because she was essentially the “darling” of the directors and it shows that she hasn’t grown out of that mindset.
she did the same thing in "little women" with the corsets, hats and dresses , she picked whatever she wanted despite the costume designers picking the correct clothings for the era . She's an ignorant diva , a wannabe Gwyneth Paltrow from Wish. Being posh, british, pretty with a famous name does not always make one right on everything ,and Emma Watson is the living example of that . What she needs is to show more respect for the movies she plays in and the staff that works in those movies because as an adult actress she's never once impressed me with her acting in anything . I also believe many movie directors, execs and and producers in Hollywood are aware that she's not easy to work with , and since she's a loud and proud feminist , darling of the woke media one can imagine the tip toeing around her and how risky it would be to refuse her whenever she makes her ignorant feminist diva demands like refusing corsets and choosing to wear anachronistic dresses in period movies "just because" , and this is why she's rarely cast now . She must have come to some kind of self awareness state because she herself decided to quit acting for the time being . I respect that choice . I believe that if she comes back after that , she will be more mature about her role as an actress in the industry .
People associate her with Hermione's character so much they actually believe she shares her quality. And they gave her some sort of moral high ground because of it.

She grew up as Hemione, it became her own personality and now, she doesn't really play as it, she IS it. Because biggest part of her acting career wasn't really acting but playing herself, I'm not sure if she even knows how to do it differently.

An eighteenth century pair of stays would have given her the conical shape of the period, and if done correctly it would not have been painful. It's jarring to see her without a corset, her silhouette is modern day. To top it off she wears bloomers under her hitched up skirt! No respectable woman would have her skirt hitched up so, and the bloomers she wears will not be worn for another hundred years. Lily James wore a corset in _Cinderella_ and she looked breathtaking.
With Belle's costumes, it seems as if they were trying to make her seem more "odd" by having her wear clothes that would have been odd or even scandalous by 18th century standards, as if they thought the animated Belle wasn't odd enough. Yet with her personality, they almost did the exact opposite. They made so much effort to make her more down-to-earth, stoic, practical, scientific, etc. Yet the very reason why the animated Belle is "odd" is because she's a free-spirited, emotional dreamer trapped in a down-to-earth, practical peasant village. This is precisely why she's more at home in the enchanted castle. The remake instead seems to frame her as being a misfit because she's too strong and independent, too intellectual, and "unladylike," which the writers and Watson apparently thought was more progressive than her original dreamy portrayal. Personally, I think it proves the original movie's point that sensitive dreamers like the original Belle ARE misfits, and that they deserve to be valued more.
Great video! In the remake, Belle is rude to Gaston for no reason. In the original, he mistreat her dreams and books, go inside her house to talk about HIS plans for her and himself. However, in the remake, he is always polite to her and even tried to understand her, talking about her books. She is unkind to him for nothing. And Emma took of all the romance aspects between her and the Beast. There were no connection between the couple. It was like watching to cousins uncomfortable with each other.
Fully agree, animated Gaston is an obvious selfish and sexist jerk. But live-action Gaston kind of feels like he's a jerk only because the script says so. He's actually kind of nice to Belle, and like you said, he tries to share in her love of books. His only real issue is that he's just not being honest about not actually reading books like Belle does. You'd think she'd at least point that out, so it'd be obvious that they have nothing in common, and therefore she doesn't reciprocate due to his lack of honesty and their lack of common interests. But no. She's just rude without recognizing their incompatibilities.
You two are right about the difference between the character of Gaston. Animation Version and live version. But what you two have got to realize about about that. In both versions! Gaston I mean! In the animated movie he makes it clear that he only wants her because she's the prettiest girl in the village and "therefore the best." What I'm saying is that his attitude towards Belle in the beginning doesn't make it as obvious that he's a jerk. That's likely more the writer's and director's fault for making him look and act less like a jerk until the scene with Belle's dad. They just make him go from 0 to 100 on the evil scale, which feels a little out of place from his attitude in the beginning. They had to make him act more like a jerk from the beginning in the live action, like they did in the animated one. That's all.
I agree with you. It really bothers me that they miss the point of Belle's character. They just don't get her. It's as if they're saying she's not good enough. But the thing is, Belle was already fine in the first place (in the original of course)
I agree og belle was kind but had her limits. She was polite to the towns folks even though you can see she wishes they understood her. Even to Gaston who clearly pushed her limits. She would fight back past her limits such as yelling at the beast after the wolf attack.
No, the nitpicking is important because those little things are supposed to build the romance and chemistry between Belle and the Beast and there was NONE in this shoddy excuse of a remake. I remember watching it and thinking "why would I root for these characters to get together? There's no romantic tension between them, they both seem like awful people and neither has growth." I think people were just so excited to see a live action Beauty and the Beast that all these glaring issues were ignored. Even after all these years, its my least favorite LA adaptation, and thats saying alot lol.

Love this analysis! Something else that really bugged me is how in the new movie Belle promises to take her father’s place…and then is immediately trying to escape the castle. Kind of undermines the weight of the promise. In the original, Belle treats the promise very seriously…we feel the emotional weight she experiences of being forever separated from her father. She doesn’t break the promise until she is terrified.
Even the scene itself where she takes her father's place isn't as emotional at the aninated ones, in the live action one she just says 'take me instead' mid sentence out of nowhere, and she wasn't even aware it would be forever when she said that In the animated one there's build up until she says that line, which really makes it hit emotionally when she does say that, and she actually understood she'd be a prisoner when she said that which really showed that she was willing to sacrifice herself for her father. It just goes to show the remake tried to copy the original without understanding the original movie at all
Most of the Disney princesses do seem to change personality/motivations in the remakes, which shows poor understanding of why they're beloved in the first place.
Good point about the character of an inventor wanting to study and analyze the facts instead of entering into the fantasy as Belle does when coming to the castle. In the original, Belle's father was the inventor, and that WAS his attitude to the magical things he sees in the castle. "How is this accomplished?" is the first thing he says when he sees Cogsworth, and even twirls his clock-face hands and opens the glass to examine the mechanism. He wants to know how these talking objects work, not start a conversation with them.
I can see why the people will judge Belle when she has her skirt up. I’m really disappointed with the golden dress. It could been more prettier if Emma just wore the corset. She should get her knowledge check if she a feminist. The corset got nothing to do with misogyny 🙄😒. Disney and Emma need to next time do better with female characters. There was nothing wrong w/ them.
Emma's acting improves over the course of the Hary Potter movies, but I feel like she peaked at that point. In Beauty and the Beast it feels like she is still playing Hermione One additional problem with the yellow dress is the lack of a corset. A corset would provide support base to do the bigger skirt.
To be totally honest I don't like the version of hermione they did in the movies either but that's a different point lol I feel like Emma grew up acting hermione and channeling her, especially the idealised verion the directors wanted, so much she basically grew into her in a way. So it's less she got better as an actor more she turned into the character and was just becoming herself on set, if that makes sense. Unfortunately that makes her all the more miscast for belle because hermione would look down on a dreamer like belle, just like she looks down on luna in her own story. The big problem here was they didn't understand bookish girls are not a monolith, and that studious girls don't equate to the ones that read fairytales and daydream. If belle was a modern girl she'd be the type to write fanfiction, not the type to aim for a Nobel
@poxidog I’m there with you, I don’t particularly like her depiction of Hermione. And I think you’re right about her turning into the character, because you can see it with a few of the other actors as well, like Rupert. I think they played those characters so long they kind of became them.
I think Anna Kendrick should’ve been Belle Emma Watson is a great person but she put to much of her views the dress is a example it’s so boring and under design instead of making her a inventor she should’ve been a author or artist

She could play Belle too since mirror mirror isn't Disney and they have Rachel Zegler as Disney's Snow White now. Anne Hathaway is a great option too but I think she's a bit too old when the movie was made.
While not my favorite Disney movie, the original beauty and the beast had a special place in my heart because I identified with OG Belle in the fact that other people in my life always found me odd and in my own world, making me believe something was wrong with me, so one of the lessons of OG Belle not needing to change who she was but to find someone who understood her hit me deeply, it gave me hope and it reassured me through my teenage years. And the fact that the remake DELETED that dreamy side of Belle and turned it into a book savy girl who was an inventor and that the reason she was looked down upon was trivialized deeply hurt me, because that's the main appeal I had for this story. And don't even let me start with Mulan, my ACTUAL favorite Disney movie.
I agree with most of what you said. Emma is the most contraversial live action princess, and she really destroyed 1991 Belle... I don't blame Emma entirley, as she didn't write the script, but its pretty clear she was involved in it... Oh btw, scenario of the remake was total trash, too - I could go on for 7 days about it
There’s no excuse/explanation for Emma’s bad acting in “Be Our Guest.” Sir Ian McKellan was acting his epic “You shall not pass” scene from Fellowship of the Ring to a tennis ball on a stick. Emma has no talent and no work ethic. Period.
I will admit that the first 2 times I saw it in the cinema I got swept up in it all. However, after watching it a few times, I agree with everything you have said. A Broadway or West End actress was needed for this role (not just in terms of singing) for the fact that they just have that more whimsical approach. The library scene leaves a bad taste in my mouth...because both of them are too sarcastic. The Beast gives Belle the library as a gift to show he cares...not to score points. Emma Watson used this role to show off her (hard core) feminist views and it just doesn't wash. Belle is a feminist but in that realistic and kind way where she still values everyone. I do enjoy the village dress and end scene dress though as a costume.
I got swept up too, for a long time I thought I liked this movie but whenever someone asked me why I didn’t have a good answer. They totally should have gotten a theater Belle to play her on screen! There are dozens of women who have played her on stage and one of them should have played her on screen.
As a kid I related to Belle the most coz I too read to escape reality when everyone around me was lecturing me about the importance of studying and earning money and status. Emma Watson just doesn't bring that nerdiness and head-in-the-clouds vibe to this role.
I want that final dress ... in a 1950 variation for Beauty and the Beast as well as wear it, lol. But I can never understand this whole thing against skirts. I have worn skirts and gone hiking, and did better than some of the people wearing pants!! It's not that a skirt hinders you, nor a corset, it's this crazy notion that it's a symbol of feminity and must be eradicated. And/or, they have no idea how to work in a skirt. Give me that skirt and I'll show you how it's done. Don't make me bring out the "it has to take a real woman" line. But otherwise, spot on. There were just so many things about this movie that irked me, and those were some of them. Animated Belle FTW!!

Also, other notes on Belle’s Blue dress- she isn’t wearing a pair of stays which was basically a bra. Also, she is wearing drawers when they weren’t worn commonly until the 1830-40s. And the apron should be white and she should be wearing a cap and straw hat. Oh and the shoes remind me of something from famous footwear as opposed to actually 18th century shoes and she needs to be wearing stockings. As for the yellow dress, it looks like it’s from the Victorian era. In fact, im pretty sure that I saw a dress very similar in an 1850s fashion plate! Also, she needs to be wearing a pair of stays both to be comfortable, and to elevate the weight of the garments and support the bust. Also, she needs to have her hair up in at least a couple of roles- but not as much as Marie Antoinette, I don’t see that suitable to Belle’s character. Note- I study dress history for fun. Also, Emma Watson is literally playing Emma Watson. She can’t sing, I can. Hear the autotune! Also, there was no need to force her politics into the movie. Like come one girl, keep your politics OUT of your film! And if you even cares to get off of your high bourse, then you’d know that stays and corsets weren’t torture devices and were literal bras and were made to fit to the individual! And why didn’t she even try to do a French accent? Actually now that I think of it, why don’t anyone other than Laefu and Lumiare have French accents?
On the note of accents, it was really half-assed. I feel like they should have either all have had similar (i.e. in this case, British) accents, or shouldn't have affected any accents beyond their natural ones at all. That way, the audience could fall back on the translation convention: we *know* they are speaking French in the movie, we're just "hearing" them in English (or whatever other language we are watching in). French accents, ironically enough, feel completely out of place for me here. Like, why are you affecting/speaking with a french accent when no one else is? You *are* french! Ugh.

I couldn’t even finish this version, I hated Belle so much. Her attitude at the beginning of the movie during the first song was terrible. Belle singing about the town being so poor and provincial already doesn’t translate well in real life because it makes her seem like she thinks she’s better than them, but then she goes and walks all over the laundry the hard working ladies are cleaning. Sheesh, she knows how hard it is to clean clothes, but to then make it worse for those poor ladies, no wonder they hate her!
You're not going to like this...but they used CGI to add petticoats to Belle's dress and make the dress seem fuller while she's dancing with the Beast. So it's probably even less layers than we think!
I actually meant to mention that in my video. When you compare the movie to the behind the scenes it’s obvious that they added volume. But it’s irritating because it’s not consistent! in some shots it’s normal and flat, so distracting!
Emma Watson’s Belle is wit worst thing about the remake and she’s the worst actor in the movie in my opinion. Bill Condon didn’t understand Belle just like Emma Watson and the writers and costume designer. Bill Condon didn’t understand what made the original a timeless classic. What gets me about the shoes too is they wanted her to have “strong shoes that would be grounding for her.” Buuuut she wears them when she just strolls through town, but when she does actual work with her laundry she’s wearing ballet shoes. ??
I do not think Emma Watson is good ad acting. I liked her in Harry Potter, not because she was particularly good but because Hermione's character was designed to be likable (if a bit of a Mary Sue in the movie version). Not to mention as a Potterhead my love for the universe and nostalgia made me mire forgiving. But I don't regard her as an actual actress.
I know that you are not targeting Emma, but I definitely criticize her for choices or acting that directly linked to her. 1. She is just not that great of an actress, when it comes to the ability to play diverse and nuanced characters. I will say the scene in Deathly Hallows with her and Helena where she is being tortured is definitely her best and it makes me wonder if she would thrive in horror. Still, when you are casting Belle, that role has to have someone who can give a STELLAR PERFORMANCE. Emma, from what I have seen, has one character: Hermione, which is basically just Emma. 2. STOP DEMONIZING CORSETS. The misguided feminist crap (and I am a feminist) that paints corsets as this patriarchal trap is getting exhausting, and it ruined the structure of her outfits (even though she actually would be wearing stays) and the yellow dress, which was awful, suffered even more. Hollywood tends to tight lace or get ill fitting corsets, I understand, but she didn’t even give them a chance. 3. She can’t sing and should have recognized this and not taken the role. I mean, that paycheck but still, she can’t sing.
I agree. I’ve seen Emma in a fair few movies and believe the best performance she’s ever given was in Deathly Hallows pt 1. The tortured scene, when Ron is spinched, and many other emotional scenes I’m actually impressed by. I’ve never considered her doing horror, that might be cool. But she does lack nuance.
Belle’s strength isn’t defined by physical feats. Belle’s strength lies in her intellect, gentle nature, kindness, empathy, and femininity. I really don’t like when people assume women, especially in books and movies, can only be strong and empowered when they act like men. Emma Watson injected her activist ideals into this character and it really shows. This wasn’t Beauty and the Beast. It was Emma Watson and the cgi yak.
Agree. I personally liked Alice in Wonderland, Maleficent, and Cinderella. So at the time I had no reason to think they would screw up so badly and as you said it’s just been downhill ever since.

This movie was such a disappointment. Beauty and the Beast was (still probably is) my favorite animated movie, mostly because of the memories. When I was little, my dad would pretend to be the Beast and I would be Belle; we would act out scenes and he would pick me up and swing me around (like we were dancing; he has a bad leg, so he can't actually dance, but it felt like dancing when I was four). When this movie came out, I remember how disappointed he was; I tried not to show how disappointed I was, but Belle (my role model growing up) was shamed and feisty and disrespectful. I don't know Emma Watson very well (never watched Harry Potter; don't intend to), but she can't sing and she honestly changed Belle into a feminist. yes, I know that can have stuff to do with the writers and directors, etc. but the fact that she agreed to play this messed up version of Belle does not help my opinion of her. So.... yeah, I stick with the animated version.
I feel like for this film they made such a stink about "NO CORSETS" and like... why? Also that period it would be stays which are less shaped. In anycase, some kind of structured undergarment would have made her costumes and general posture look so much better. Emma slouches so bad 🤣 and then her costumes look wrinkled and bunched and just... like she's a child.
This is more of a fault of the writers and director as opposed to Emma. Women are not allowed to be feminine in Disney stories anymore. They have to be brash, rude, arrogant, chauvinistic, and tough as nails. They also need to put a man in his place. That is what is considered empowering these days by Disney execs. The west wing segment is a perfect example. I, even as a young man, felt like I was in Belle’s shoes while watching the original cartoon. There was such a magnificent tone shift going from Be Our Guest into the darkened and rather bleak looking West Wing. It was nerve wracking. In the new one, she just looked like an angry wife who was going to tell off her husband. All suspense was removed because this was about showing how tough Belle was as opposed to the mysteries and potential dangers of the castle. Sorry, but when I think empowered women, I will stick to Ripley, Diane Freeling, Lois Lane in Superman, and the bride from Kill Bill.

The excuses about why she had trouble with the be our guest scenes are not acceptable. #1 She is an actress, her job is to ACT #2 Anyone with imagination should be able to SEE the dancing silverware candle sticks plares cutlery ect. I walk around seeing movies in my mind whenever I want.

When I first heard that Emma Watson was going to play Belle I thought... "Well that's an odd choice" because I've always thought Emma had this cold, logical look to her. I am not saying she isn't a good actor! I've always thought of Belle as being soft, head-in-the-clouds, kind... and Emma doesn't pull that off well. *also the soup-drinking scene in the animated film was honestly so respectful and heartwarming. That scene has stuck with me for years! It shows that a disney princess can be a good role model.

Not a huge stretch I guess she'd be one too. Also, I guess she was a dreamer in the OG film, but you could argue that didn't really play out meaningfully anyway since it ends with her marrying hot prince in the castle next door to the town. Also, yessss her relationship with the beast was really mean spirited/ toxic? Like he was extraaaa douchey and she was giving. The OG had the beast being nasty, and her responding in a way that defended herself but wasn't petty. The beast quickly adjusted and became super kind, and u could believe they liked/ loved each other at the end? The changes here were not it. Also, omg I didn't realize she was running around in her underwear haha
The yellow/gold dress of the ballroom scene, some parts of it was in CGI because the actress said she couldn't move well in that...yea you heard me, the length and fluff of the dress was actually nonexistent.
All your points are problems I have with this movie too, and none is petty as little actions can really reveal how a person truly is (like how she treated Beast in the soup scene). I kinda think Emma Watson can't act like a nice person, cause I feel, that she isn't, she's just always so hard looking. The dress being hiked up looks so bad in addition to all the other problems. Belle, in this is just a mean girl, who doesn't deserve her happy end. And it always perturbed me how people were like "She's perfect as Belle, since she played Hermione", when that couldn't be further from the truth. Belle's and Hermione's interest in books couldn't be more opposite. It's like saying a person who likes horror movies and a person who likes romance movies, interests are exactly the same since they both watch movies. It's not! And her terrible acting in "Be Our Guests" can't be justified, as I've seen people act amazed when there was nothing there. There's just so many terrible things with this movie.
Here’s something else that I don’t blame on Emma at all, but more on Bill Condon and Disney: Emma’s singing voice is extremely artificial in this movie. In this modern era, it’s rare to find music that doesn’t use some pitch correction here and there, but if you listen to Emma’s voice, it’s flawless. Her intonation never wavers, the way she attacks and shapes her notes is perfect every time. You might be thinking, isn’t that a good thing? The truth is…not really. Using any kind of pitch correction strips the performance of any emotional depth the performer puts in. It suffers the same problem as the costumes: the supporting cast is bringing the heat, but the main character isn’t holding her own. And the sad thing? This was avoidable. We can talk about how Emma took too many liberties with Belle as a character, but they could have gotten better music without recasting Emma. A lot of people think musical ability is just gifted to you, but that’s not true. Sure, some people are more naturally adept at it, but a lot of musical ability comes from time and training in the practice room. The Walt Disney company had the resources to get her any musical training she needed, but they didn’t. If they really wanted Emma to be the lead, a few weeks’ worth of singing lessons wasn’t enough-if she was to hold her own, she needed at least a year to be fully prepared for the role. And then they had the nerve to draw attention to this lack of training via the supporting cast. Luke Evans absolutely brings the heat with Gaston, Josh Gad is left alone to mess with his LeFou, and even Dan Stevens is married to a professional opera singer and vocal coach.
And look, I know it’s not fair to compare Page O’Hara to Emma Watson, but just bear with me. Listen to the bridge of “Belle”, the “ohhhhh, isn’t this amazing” bit of the original. You can hear Page O’Hara smile in the studio through the way she attacks and shapes her notes. Bill Murray’s version of “Bare Necessities” in the live action Jungle Book is kind of the same way. Is it a perfect performance? No-it’s rough around the edges, not 100% in tune, but it sounds like a bear floating down a river who’s so carefree, he has to sing a song about it. If you pitch correct Murray’s or O’Hara’s performances, you strip away a lot of what they give their characters. And going back on what I said about how Emma’s the lead, that doesn’t mean she needs to be perfect. Yes, she needs to be able to hold her own because Luke Evans’ singing is GOD TIER, but I’d rather have a slightly weaker voice with emotion than a technically perfect performance with no dimension to it.

Belle has always been my favourite Disney princess, because she’s such a relatable character. As you mentioned, yes, she’s a dreamer, girl who loves living in a fantasy world, girl who loves about reading romance, girl who is curious about the world. And these are the things that makes her Belle
I agree with everything you said and watching the film made me sad how they changed Belle. As if being a brave, kind hearted dreamer would not be enough woman for The Beast.
And how the fact that some of the line delivery was just soulless at times and didn’t feel like it had any emotion. She felt like she lacked any emotion too many times throughout the movie to be the Disney Belle. And yeah, she should know better from working on Harry Potter all those years. Actors have to portray the emotions and the feel of what we see on the big screen but whats not really there onset.
You know, I agree with everything in this video, and I actually think that’s what’s wrong with many young women today. They think that being rebellious, feisty, makes them really hot and desirable and strong. And when it’s written well, it works! Take Arwen, for example. She rebells against her father for wanting to marry a human. But she is kind and dignified and was willing to sacrifice herself all the way. She elevated Aragorn and respected him, treated him like an equal. Now, young women think that being strong means being just…plain rude and disrespectful…honestly deserving of someone splashing a glass of water on their face.

p.s. I used to love Emma Watson as Hermione then one day started resenting her bland acting and obnoxiously entitled attitude and ruining my favorite Disney Princess. Recently I've had more sympathy when I read about her struggles. I think her leaving acting (which sounds like it's what she's pretty much doing as she continues to pursue her education) is the best call for her. I'm happy for her, but I wish she would not have taken this beloved role if she was not in a happy state to do the role justice.
if any actress should have played Belle, that it should have been Samantha Banks, a brunette, west-end performer, so can sing, and would have been an amazing performance there was no chemistry with the Beast, in fact the best performances were Gaston and Lefou, they understood the assignment but the film was so flat, and the dress, it lacked the "wow" moment, that was meant to be the most romantic moment in the film, and i've seen better cosplay outfits
The two biggest offenses for me were that cheap yellow prom dress and the fact that she needed to be portrayed as the inventor. There were times where she came off as thinking she was superior to her little town. Yes, she shouldn't have been criticized for teaching a child to read but did she really have to block the others from washing their clothes by taking over the town well (aka their water supply)? If Emma and the producers felt that Belle had to be inventive, they could have considered having her creating the music boxes as a hobby while her father remained the inventor. I love the animated BATB so much but this was very disappointing for all the reasons you pointed out and probably many more that I'll read about in the comments
Something the Emma Watson said that, while I understand, felt that the writers (and Emma herself considering she talked about having helped write Belle) missed completely was that she said she wanted the relationship between Belle and the Beast to feel more natural. Now I understand that if you do not realize in the animated movie that it does in fact take place over a decent amount of time, that the romance might seem a bit rushed, but here, nothing in the relationship felt natural. The Beast (while it is a bit understandable because he is a prince) felt too high and mighty, but Bell also acted as if she thought she was somehow better than him for most of the movie. And as far as the animated movie not understanding romance, when Beast "gives" Belle the library, in the animated movie, it was because he found out (through Lumiar) that she like books and it would be something she would enjoy, and he almost seems relieved when she does like it. But in the live action movie, he shows her the library as a way to simply show off how many books he has, and by extension how much he better he understands what he has read (he doesn't really understand them better, he just wants to show off.) None of their relationship felt natural.
Totally agree with you 💯 percent about everything that you said. I'm glad that I'm not the only one who feels this way and has issues with Belle's yellow ball gown. It's such so sad to me, because in the live action version of Cinderella during the ballroom scene, there's ladies that are dressed to represent other Disney Princesses. I absolutely love the gown that is supposed to be Belle's in that movie, so why couldn't we gotten that version of the gown? Beauty and the Beast is my favorite, animated version only though. I had such high hopes for the live action, but ended up being disappointed with it

The original BatB is my favorite Disney movie among my favorites. And when this live action came out I had a great time going with my family to see it. I was happy then because I wanted to share the experience with them and they liked the movie. But with the years I realized I was obviously and shamelessly blinded by nostalgia and the fact the original is my favorite, so I was expecting and forcing myself to believe the live action was at the very least good. It's been a while now that I see clearly and this live action is awful (I think Luke Evans, Josh Gad and maybe Kevin Kline are the only ones who did a good job with their characters but not even those save this one) I agree with everything you explain here because it's true. Even that part about Belle's gestures and how Emma speaks some lines. Everything is a big shame tbh. Because the little details matter. As for the Be Our Guest scene. It was her job to immerse us as the audience into believing she was entertained. And she didn't deliver. If it was boring to film that, I think it was on her in not making it believable enough for us and herself. i love this analysis, and the way you presented all your ideas just made for such a good video! :) but yeah, i agree so much. when this movie first came out i was OBSESSED. i had the soundtrack and everything. then i forgot about it, and then a few years ago i started seeing videos like these comparing the live action to the original and it's just so....dull. the orignal is full of life, and i relate to belle so much because, like u said, she is the "dreamer". but in the live action she is just so...meh?? 😭 like its not the same character. and this is not against emma watson at ALL, but she just doesn't scream "belle". this is where i think the aladdin and cinderella remakes did a great job- they stayed true to the characters while adding a little more of their own touch. i haven't seen the little mermaid one so i can't speak for that one! but i personally LOVE the aladdin remake :) dont get me wrong, i still love all of disney's animated movies and appreciate all the effort put into them- especially the ones in the renaissance era- but i just had a lot of fun with the 2019 aladdin!!

I agree with you on all these points, the people involved with the remake in fact a lot of the Disney remakes make it clear they don't understand their own material. the dress to me is the biggest disappointment you can have a simple dress and have it be beautiful, if designed right.
Belle is the most greatest role model and Beauty and the Beast is one of the best romantic fairy tale which was loved by the whole world. Even Belle is my favorite Princess but this live-action it was awful in every way.
It doesn't matter if you're bored in real life. You're an actor, ACT amazed. This is why I'm not a fan of Emma Watson. She was good as a child actor, but I find her performances really bland. Plus her feministic view always seem to dominate every role she plays. Disappointing.
I don't like it, because they made it all about Emma Watson in this move, or it does seem like it. Making the dress more manageable for her, taking out the corset because she hates them (which makes the first dress look pretty bad being so scrunched up at the bodice), making her last dress to fit more with her preferences, change the character's personality because Emma wanted it. All about her, isn't it? It's not Beauty and the Beast, it's not Belle and the Beast, it's *Emma Watson* and the Beast (hardly, as no one writing it seemed to really care too much about his character either). I think they assumed people weren't there to see the remake or Belle or Beast, but the actress, which I'm sure wasn't the case for most people. I don't care about the actress, I only care to the extend if they have potential to play their role well... Emma clearly can not, she showed it well.

Emma Watson being cast as Belle (and the way they mocked Lefou's character for his sexuality, though that is unrelated to the video) are the two biggest problems of this movie. As someone who has always strongly related to Belle, the way she plays her just isn't it. Watching her in this version feels like watching a character who is a mix of Emma Watson and Emma Watson's Hermione, not like watching Belle. It feels like she wanted to fix Belle and make her how she thought she should be, which is also something that kinda happened with Hermione in the HP movies with Steve Kloves being so biased in his writing and making her so perfect, something that she wasn't in the books and shouldn't have been in the movies. It's a shame. I enjoyed her performances in other things, but with these two characters she really missed the mark.
8:49 let me explain to you why this scene is so wrong in the 2017 version. In the animated version many people thinks the Best eat that way because it's a beast with no manners, but he eats in that way because HE CAN'T EAT NORMALLY WITH THAT TWO BIG FANGS!. But in the bad version Belle is like "OK , so if you don't ascend to my level , I'll be down to your level , whatever ", witch it doesn't make sense since she there is a "empoderated Belle". They all misunderstood the whole Beauty and the Beast concept , they thought it was just copy and paste the main parts and songs (so nostalgics won't complain later on) and for the feminists they would add all that crap of Belle being an inventor and her sassyness 😂. The result is a complete MESS

This Belle, she’s just so cocky so rude I just didn’t enjoy watching her Some other “feisty” as they tried to paint it off as moments from her include 1. I love Emma's character as a person but she was honestly absolutely unsuitable choice for this role in almost every possible way. Not just I honestly hate this remake... I hate that idea that they had to make Belle more like Emma because of all the contemporaly feminist ideas of femininity, like original Belle wasn't strong woman enough. You don't have to be tough and defiant to be feminist. You can be gentle, polite, compassionate, dreamy and strong and brave at the same time, just like the original Belle was and that actually made her so wonderful. But this idea of feminism just feels like women aren't allowed to express their femininity in their own unique way and they just have to fit into one scheme to be considered as a true feminist. Original Belle had her own dreams, she didn't necessarily need romantic love, she just wanted someone to accept her the way she is, listen to her and appriciate who she truly is, her dreams, her beautiful soul. She and the beast didn't need to bond through books and similar backstories (and even that didn't help Belle and the beast from the remake to feel natural). They just truly saw the soul of one another, appriciated the best of one another and had true connection that felt natural and honest and few scenes were enough to show us how they developed feelings for each other. Belle from the ramake doesn't even seem like a person who would be truly able to fall in love with the beast and the beast felt so insecure and unsure around her all the time which felt so wrong because they were supposed to feel more and more comfortable around each other during their time together. But it just felt like she tolerates him but still sees him as less than her and he just akwardly tries to reach her but doesn't know how.
Emma is not really a good actor…I thought she was very good in the first Harry Potter movie, some of her deliveries were perfection, but she became too self conscious from the second movie onwards, she became so stiff and I don’t know what’s up with her eyebrows because they always go up every single time she’s about to deliver a line. It’s like she’s having speech constipation and lifting her eyebrows helps? She never did recover. I don’t know ever what happened to the girl who was so brilliant in the first Harry Potter😢
I think her being an inventor could actually work! After all, inventors need their imagination. She could have totally been a dreamy, imaginative inventor type who tries to make a bunch of interesting (but maybe not super practical) contraptions. More art than science, maybe.
This movie has too much exposition. For instance, after Belle has agreed to take her father's place in the dungeon, and is then freed by Lumiere, she is surprised that she's talking to a candle. He then corrects her and claims that he is a candelabra. This line of dialogue is really unnecessary. There is a similar exchange, when the Enchanted Objects show her to her room, and Belle picks up a hairbrush, and expects it to talk. Cogsworth then has to state the obvious: That the hairbrush is merely a hairbrush. It's like the writers just assumed that the audience was dumb, or maybe this dialogue is supposed to be funny, but it just falls flat.
As I see so many critisizing the live-action remakes so much and saying that the originals are better, I'm reminded of the Nostalgia Critic's line in hus review of How the Grinch Stole Christmas. "If you can't remake it better, don't remake it at all."
Reminds me of when this movie came out and I was studying in an entertainment field and a friend asked what I thought of it, and I had a hard time telling them what I liked about the movie that wasn't the props. Just racking my brain I didn't like Emma's take on Belle, while the background had beautiful setting it was too heavily CGI, too much vocaloids, etc. I liked the costuming, but even then they missed it whether it was properly wearing the appropriate attire for the period (sorry Emma that dress needed a corset and some volume, that ball dress is known for look like a discounted prom dress not the 'wow' dress everyone had high hopes for) and you're on point with that last dress as it's the most beautiful piece but way too modern! I think the only good that came out of this movie was the song Evermore that Alan Menken came back to write with Tim Rice a song that Menken thought would finally give the Beast his chance for a solo song. Sure it's computerized but it is a beautiful song that adds more to Beast's development that the animated film limited. The irony is that you can tell there was a push to put Belle into this heroine arc that really made the character stand offish and unlikable, while giving Beast a more softer connection that the audience ended up feeling a little more sympathy for. Those bits you picked up really highlights how much those who were in charge really didn't understand Belle's role, in the end the Beast ended up looking for favorable than the supposed "jerk" he was supposed to be.
Belle seemed so stern and mean in this version. Belles kindness is what shines through in the original I was not impressed by her acting

I have so many issues with the library scene. In the original, Beast shows her the library because he’s starting to develop feelings for her. He wants to do something nice for her and the servants remembered her interest upon hearing about the library. He’s a little nervous but excited to see what she thinks of it. He’s being kind of playful with building anticipation. And she’s overjoyed by the library and thankful when he says it’s hers.
In the remake, she mentions liking Romeo and Juliet. And he scoffs! He’s like “ugh women and their romances there are much better books to read!” He shows her the library to show off. Not because he shares any interests with her. Not because he decided to be nice to her. But to show off his BLE (big library energy). And when he sees how she reacts to it, he’s like “well uh… I guess you can borrow some if you want.”
It really destroys the moment that they begin to fall in love and I hate it!!!

This was the moment when I almost turned off the movie. It ruined EVERYTHING. The writers, director, Emma, the higher-ups and anyone else who had the ability for input...what were they thinking? It's like they'd never seen the original movie. It honestly makes me think none of them have ever been in a normal, happy and loving relationship if they thought that was an improvement in any way. The romance was just thrown completely out the window.
I don't think I was ever so peeved off about a movie before.
Their chemistry or lack there of is the issue I have with the remake. It seemed forced and so out of place, and it was so obvious in the scene where Belle expresses her love for the Beast. I didn’t believe it because there was no genuine connection between them. What’s disappointing is that the remake focused on Gaston and Lafou’s complicated relationship throughput the film instead of the two protagonists the film is based on.
Belle is my favorite Disney heroine: her strength lies in her kind and gentle nature. She is brave and stands her ground when she has to, but she is also cheerful and sweet. I wish she had been played by someone who understood that a woman can be gentle, feminine and sweet without being weak.
I don’t think we can just blame the actor though, I imagine that some of it would be to do with higher up decisions.
It’s not just the actress, it’s the way the character was written in the remake that shouldn’t exist.
The problem imo seems to be more than in modern movies women are not allowed to be kind and gentle, that it's seen as a weakness. Seems like most have this misunderstanding when usually actually being kind takes lots of strength, someone angry and rudeis actually weak but specially in women rather rudeness is unfortunately seen as a strength (at least what I have noticed in more modern Disney movies).
I definitely wouldn't blame Emma, it's the writers and Disney that are doing this, she's just acting how the writer and director wants her to act.

On the topic of the blue dress… why are other townspeople also wearing blue? In the original film Belle and beast are the only characters who wear blue and it really makes Belle visually stand out in the town 😢

Emma Watson was obviously given way too much creative control over how she wanted to portray Belle despite her misinformed views about corsets and the like. She was used to getting her way when she was Hermione because she was essentially the “darling” of the directors and it shows that she hasn’t grown out of that mindset.
she did the same thing in "little women" with the corsets, hats and dresses , she picked whatever she wanted despite the costume designers picking the correct clothings for the era . She's an ignorant diva , a wannabe Gwyneth Paltrow from Wish. Being posh, british, pretty with a famous name does not always make one right on everything ,and Emma Watson is the living example of that .
What she needs is to show more respect for the movies she plays in and the staff that works in those movies because as an adult actress she's never once impressed me with her acting in anything .
I also believe many movie directors, execs and and producers in Hollywood are aware that she's not easy to work with , and since she's a loud and proud feminist , darling of the woke media one can imagine the tip toeing around her and how risky it would be to refuse her whenever she makes her ignorant feminist diva demands like refusing corsets and choosing to wear anachronistic dresses in period movies "just because" , and this is why she's rarely cast now . She must have come to some kind of self awareness state because she herself decided to quit acting for the time being . I respect that choice . I believe that if she comes back after that , she will be more mature about her role as an actress in the industry .
People associate her with Hermione's character so much they actually believe she shares her quality. And they gave her some sort of moral high ground because of it.

An eighteenth century pair of stays would have given her the conical shape of the period, and if done correctly it would not have been painful. It's jarring to see her without a corset, her silhouette is modern day. To top it off she wears bloomers under her hitched up skirt! No respectable woman would have her skirt hitched up so, and the bloomers she wears will not be worn for another hundred years. Lily James wore a corset in _Cinderella_ and she looked breathtaking.
With Belle's costumes, it seems as if they were trying to make her seem more "odd" by having her wear clothes that would have been odd or even scandalous by 18th century standards, as if they thought the animated Belle wasn't odd enough. Yet with her personality, they almost did the exact opposite. They made so much effort to make her more down-to-earth, stoic, practical, scientific, etc. Yet the very reason why the animated Belle is "odd" is because she's a free-spirited, emotional dreamer trapped in a down-to-earth, practical peasant village. This is precisely why she's more at home in the enchanted castle. The remake instead seems to frame her as being a misfit because she's too strong and independent, too intellectual, and "unladylike," which the writers and Watson apparently thought was more progressive than her original dreamy portrayal. Personally, I think it proves the original movie's point that sensitive dreamers like the original Belle ARE misfits, and that they deserve to be valued more.

Great video! In the remake, Belle is rude to Gaston for no reason. In the original, he mistreat her dreams and books, go inside her house to talk about HIS plans for her and himself. However, in the remake, he is always polite to her and even tried to understand her, talking about her books. She is unkind to him for nothing. And Emma took of all the romance aspects between her and the Beast. There were no connection between the couple. It was like watching to cousins uncomfortable with each other.
Fully agree, animated Gaston is an obvious selfish and sexist jerk. But live-action Gaston kind of feels like he's a jerk only because the script says so. He's actually kind of nice to Belle, and like you said, he tries to share in her love of books. His only real issue is that he's just not being honest about not actually reading books like Belle does. You'd think she'd at least point that out, so it'd be obvious that they have nothing in common, and therefore she doesn't reciprocate due to his lack of honesty and their lack of common interests. But no. She's just rude without recognizing their incompatibilities.

In the animated movie he makes it clear that he only wants her because she's the prettiest girl in the village and "therefore the best." @@jjsalt1982 I never said that Gaston has love for Belle or that he's a straight up nice guy in the live action one. What I'm saying is that his attitude towards Belle in the beginning doesn't make it as obvious that he's a jerk. That's likely more the writer's and director's fault for making him look and act less like a jerk until the scene with Belle's dad. They just make him go from 0 to 100 on the evil scale, which feels a little out of place from his attitude in the beginning. They had to make him act more like a jerk from the beginning in the live action, like they did in the animated one. That's all.

I agree og belle was kind but had her limits. She was polite to the towns folks even though you can see she wishes they understood her. Even to Gaston who clearly pushed her limits. She would fight back past her limits such as yelling at the beast after the wolf attack.
No, the nitpicking is important because those little things are supposed to build the romance and chemistry between Belle and the Beast and there was NONE in this shoddy excuse of a remake. I remember watching it and thinking "why would I root for these characters to get together? There's no romantic tension between them, they both seem like awful people and neither has growth." I think people were just so excited to see a live action Beauty and the Beast that all these glaring issues were ignored. Even after all these years, its my least favorite LA adaptation, and thats saying alot lol.

Love this analysis! Something else that really bugged me is how in the new movie Belle promises to take her father’s place…and then is immediately trying to escape the castle. Kind of undermines the weight of the promise. In the original, Belle treats the promise very seriously…we feel the emotional weight she experiences of being forever separated from her father. She doesn’t break the promise until she is terrified.

In the animated one there's build up until she says that line, which really makes it hit emotionally when she does say that, and she actually understood she'd be a prisoner when she said that which really showed that she was willing to sacrifice herself for her father. It just goes to show the remake tried to copy the original without understanding the original movie at all
Totally agree. In the animated it was a true sacrifice, it said so much about her character! But in the remake it makes her look dishonorable.
Most of the Disney princesses do seem to change personality/motivations in the remakes, which shows poor understanding of why they're beloved in the first place.
Good point about the character of an inventor wanting to study and analyze the facts instead of entering into the fantasy as Belle does when coming to the castle. In the original, Belle's father was the inventor, and that WAS his attitude to the magical things he sees in the castle. "How is this accomplished?" is the first thing he says when he sees Cogsworth, and even twirls his clock-face hands and opens the glass to examine the mechanism. He wants to know how these talking objects work, not start a conversation with them.
I can see why the people will judge Belle when she has her skirt up. I’m really disappointed with the golden dress. It could been more prettier if Emma just wore the corset. She should get her knowledge check if she a feminist. The corset got nothing to do with misogyny 🙄😒. Disney and Emma need to next time do better with female characters. There was nothing wrong w/ them.
Emma's acting improves over the course of the Hary Potter movies, but I feel like she peaked at that point. In Beauty and the Beast it feels like she is still playing Hermione
One additional problem with the yellow dress is the lack of a corset. A corset would provide support base to do the bigger skirt.
To be totally honest I don't like the version of hermione they did in the movies either but that's a different point lol
I feel like Emma grew up acting hermione and channeling her, especially the idealised verion the directors wanted, so much she basically grew into her in a way. So it's less she got better as an actor more she turned into the character and was just becoming herself on set, if that makes sense. Unfortunately that makes her all the more miscast for belle because hermione would look down on a dreamer like belle, just like she looks down on luna in her own story. The big problem here was they didn't understand bookish girls are not a monolith, and that studious girls don't equate to the ones that read fairytales and daydream. If belle was a modern girl she'd be the type to write fanfiction, not the type to aim for a Nobel

While not my favorite Disney movie, the original beauty and the beast had a special place in my heart because I identified with OG Belle in the fact that other people in my life always found me odd and in my own world, making me believe something was wrong with me, so one of the lessons of OG Belle not needing to change who she was but to find someone who understood her hit me deeply, it gave me hope and it reassured me through my teenage years.
And the fact that the remake DELETED that dreamy side of Belle and turned it into a book savy girl who was an inventor and that the reason she was looked down upon was trivialized deeply hurt me, because that's the main appeal I had for this story.
And don't even let me start with Mulan, my ACTUAL favorite Disney movie.

There’s no excuse/explanation for Emma’s bad acting in “Be Our Guest.” Sir Ian McKellan was acting his epic “You shall not pass” scene from Fellowship of the Ring to a tennis ball on a stick. Emma has no talent and no work ethic. Period.
I will admit that the first 2 times I saw it in the cinema I got swept up in it all. However, after watching it a few times, I agree with everything you have said.
A Broadway or West End actress was needed for this role (not just in terms of singing) for the fact that they just have that more whimsical approach.
The library scene leaves a bad taste in my mouth...because both of them are too sarcastic. The Beast gives Belle the library as a gift to show he cares...not to score points. Emma Watson used this role to show off her (hard core) feminist views and it just doesn't wash. Belle is a feminist but in that realistic and kind way where she still values everyone.
I do enjoy the village dress and end scene dress though as a costume.

They totally should have gotten a theater Belle to play her on screen! There are dozens of women who have played her on stage and one of them should have played her on screen.
As a kid I related to Belle the most coz I too read to escape reality when everyone around me was lecturing me about the importance of studying and earning money and status. Emma Watson just doesn't bring that nerdiness and head-in-the-clouds vibe to this role.

I want that final dress ... in a 1950 variation for Beauty and the Beast as well as wear it, lol.
But I can never understand this whole thing against skirts. I have worn skirts and gone hiking, and did better than some of the people wearing pants!! It's not that a skirt hinders you, nor a corset, it's this crazy notion that it's a symbol of feminity and must be eradicated. And/or, they have no idea how to work in a skirt. Give me that skirt and I'll show you how it's done. Don't make me bring out the "it has to take a real woman" line.
But otherwise, spot on. There were just so many things about this movie that irked me, and those were some of them. Animated Belle FTW!!

Also, other notes on Belle’s Blue dress- she isn’t wearing a pair of stays which was basically a bra. Also, she is wearing drawers when they weren’t worn commonly until the 1830-40s. And the apron should be white and she should be wearing a cap and straw hat. Oh and the shoes remind me of something from famous footwear as opposed to actually 18th century shoes and she needs to be wearing stockings.
As for the yellow dress, it looks like it’s from the Victorian era. In fact, im pretty sure that I saw a dress very similar in an 1850s fashion plate! Also, she needs to be wearing a pair of stays both to be comfortable, and to elevate the weight of the garments and support the bust. Also, she needs to have her hair up in at least a couple of roles- but not as much as Marie Antoinette, I don’t see that suitable to Belle’s character.

On the note of accents, it was really half-assed. I feel like they should have either all have had similar (i.e. in this case, British) accents, or shouldn't have affected any accents beyond their natural ones at all. That way, the audience could fall back on the translation convention: we *know* they are speaking French in the movie, we're just "hearing" them in English (or whatever other language we are watching in). French accents, ironically enough, feel completely out of place for me here. Like, why are you affecting/speaking with a french accent when no one else is? You *are* french! Ugh.
As said by Genevieve Valentine about her yellow dress: “The major thing this gown tells us about Belle is that Emma Watson plays her.”

I couldn’t even finish this version, I hated Belle so much. Her attitude at the beginning of the movie during the first song was terrible. Belle singing about the town being so poor and provincial already doesn’t translate well in real life because it makes her seem like she thinks she’s better than them, but then she goes and walks all over the laundry the hard working ladies are cleaning. Sheesh, she knows how hard it is to clean clothes, but to then make it worse for those poor ladies, no wonder they hate her!
She uses the water supply for the town for the washing machine too. In the original I was so annoyed for her, in this one I just wanted to flick her
You're not going to like this...but they used CGI to add petticoats to Belle's dress and make the dress seem fuller while she's dancing with the Beast. So it's probably even less layers than we think!
I actually meant to mention that in my video. When you compare the movie to the behind the scenes it’s obvious that they added volume. But it’s irritating because it’s not consistent! in some shots it’s normal and flat, so distracting!

When i heard it was going to be emma watson, my first thought was " do you want your movie to be good or not?"
I do not think Emma Watson is good ad acting.
I liked her in Harry Potter, not because she was particularly good but because Hermione's character was designed to be likable (if a bit of a Mary Sue in the movie version). Not to mention as a Potterhead my love for the universe and nostalgia made me mire forgiving.
But I don't regard her as an actual actress.
This is why you shouldn't give full reign to an interpretation of an actor. No matter how well of a fit it seems to be.
I know that you are not targeting Emma, but I definitely criticize her for choices or acting that directly linked to her.
1. She is just not that great of an actress, when it comes to the ability to play diverse and nuanced characters. I will say the scene in Deathly Hallows with her and Helena where she is being tortured is definitely her best and it makes me wonder if she would thrive in horror. Still, when you are casting Belle, that role has to have someone who can give a STELLAR PERFORMANCE. Emma, from what I have seen, has one character: Hermione, which is basically just Emma.
2. STOP DEMONIZING CORSETS. The misguided feminist crap (and I am a feminist) that paints corsets as this patriarchal trap is getting exhausting, and it ruined the structure of her outfits (even though she actually would be wearing stays) and the yellow dress, which was awful, suffered even more. Hollywood tends to tight lace or get ill fitting corsets, I understand, but she didn’t even give them a chance.
3. She can’t sing and should have recognized this and not taken the role. I mean, that paycheck but still, she can’t sing.
I agree. I’ve seen Emma in a fair few movies and believe the best performance she’s ever given was in Deathly Hallows pt 1. The tortured scene, when Ron is spinched, and many other emotional scenes I’m actually impressed by. I’ve never considered her doing horror, that might be cool. But she does lack nuance.

This movie was such a disappointment. Beauty and the Beast was (still probably is) my favorite animated movie, mostly because of the memories. When I was little, my dad would pretend to be the Beast and I would be Belle; we would act out scenes and he would pick me up and swing me around (like we were dancing; he has a bad leg, so he can't actually dance, but it felt like dancing when I was four).
When this movie came out, I remember how disappointed he was; I tried not to show how disappointed I was, but Belle (my role model growing up) was shamed and feisty and disrespectful. I don't know Emma Watson very well (never watched Harry Potter; don't intend to), but she can't sing and she honestly changed Belle into a feminist. yes, I know that can have stuff to do with the writers and directors, etc. but the fact that she agreed to play this messed up version of Belle does not help my opinion of her. So.... yeah, I stick with the animated version.

I feel like for this film they made such a stink about "NO CORSETS" and like... why? Also that period it would be stays which are less shaped. In anycase, some kind of structured undergarment would have made her costumes and general posture look so much better. Emma slouches so bad 🤣 and then her costumes look wrinkled and bunched and just... like she's a child.

This is more of a fault of the writers and director as opposed to Emma. Women are not allowed to be feminine in Disney stories anymore. They have to be brash, rude, arrogant, chauvinistic, and tough as nails. They also need to put a man in his place. That is what is considered empowering these days by Disney execs. The west wing segment is a perfect example. I, even as a young man, felt like I was in Belle’s shoes while watching the original cartoon. There was such a magnificent tone shift going from Be Our Guest into the darkened and rather bleak looking West Wing. It was nerve wracking. In the new one, she just looked like an angry wife who was going to tell off her husband. All suspense was removed because this was about showing how tough Belle was as opposed to the mysteries and potential dangers of the castle. Sorry, but when I think empowered women, I will stick to Ripley, Diane Freeling, Lois Lane in Superman, and the bride from Kill Bill.

When I first heard that Emma Watson was going to play Belle I thought... "Well that's an odd choice" because I've always thought Emma had this cold, logical look to her. I am not saying she isn't a good actor! I've always thought of Belle as being soft, head-in-the-clouds, kind... and Emma doesn't pull that off well.
*also the soup-drinking scene in the animated film was honestly so respectful and heartwarming. That scene has stuck with me for years! It shows that a disney princess can be a good role model.

Agreed with most of ur points! I think the one about Belle being an inventor didn't bother me too much. Mostly since her main influence growing up was her dad, and he was an inventor. Not a huge stretch I guess she'd be one too. Also, I guess she was a dreamer in the OG film, but you could argue that didn't really play out meaningfully anyway since it ends with her marrying hot prince in the castle next door to the town.
Also, yessss her relationship with the beast was really mean spirited/ toxic? Like he was extraaaa douchey and she was giving. The OG had the beast being nasty, and her responding in a way that defended herself but wasn't petty. The beast quickly adjusted and became super kind, and u could believe they liked/ loved each other at the end? The changes here were not it.

The yellow/gold dress of the ballroom scene, some parts of it was in CGI because the actress said she couldn't move well in that...yea you heard me, the length and fluff of the dress was actually nonexistent.
All your points are problems I have with this movie too, and none is petty as little actions can really reveal how a person truly is (like how she treated Beast in the soup scene). I kinda think Emma Watson can't act like a nice person, cause I feel, that she isn't, she's just always so hard looking. The dress being hiked up looks so bad in addition to all the other problems. Belle, in this is just a mean girl, who doesn't deserve her happy end. And it always perturbed me how people were like "She's perfect as Belle, since she played Hermione", when that couldn't be further from the truth. Belle's and Hermione's interest in books couldn't be more opposite. It's like saying a person who likes horror movies and a person who likes romance movies, interests are exactly the same since they both watch movies. It's not! And her terrible acting in "Be Our Guests" can't be justified, as I've seen people act amazed when there was nothing there. There's just so many terrible things with this movie.
Here’s something else that I don’t blame on Emma at all, but more on Bill Condon and Disney: Emma’s singing voice is extremely artificial in this movie. In this modern era, it’s rare to find music that doesn’t use some pitch correction here and there, but if you listen to Emma’s voice, it’s flawless. Her intonation never wavers, the way she attacks and shapes her notes is perfect every time. You might be thinking, isn’t that a good thing? The truth is…not really. Using any kind of pitch correction strips the performance of any emotional depth the performer puts in. It suffers the same problem as the costumes: the supporting cast is bringing the heat, but the main character isn’t holding her own.
And the sad thing? This was avoidable. We can talk about how Emma took too many liberties with Belle as a character, but they could have gotten better music without recasting Emma. A lot of people think musical ability is just gifted to you, but that’s not true. Sure, some people are more naturally adept at it, but a lot of musical ability comes from time and training in the practice room. The Walt Disney company had the resources to get her any musical training she needed, but they didn’t. If they really wanted Emma to be the lead, a few weeks’ worth of singing lessons wasn’t enough-if she was to hold her own, she needed at least a year to be fully prepared for the role. And then they had the nerve to draw attention to this lack of training via the supporting cast. Luke Evans absolutely brings the heat with Gaston, Josh Gad is left alone to mess with his LeFou, and even Dan Stevens is married to a professional opera singer and vocal coach.
And look, I know it’s not fair to compare Page O’Hara to Emma Watson, but just bear with me. Listen to the bridge of “Belle”, the “ohhhhh, isn’t this amazing” bit of the original. You can hear Page O’Hara smile in the studio through the way she attacks and shapes her notes. Bill Murray’s version of “Bare Necessities” in the live action Jungle Book is kind of the same way. Is it a perfect performance? No-it’s rough around the edges, not 100% in tune, but it sounds like a bear floating down a river who’s so carefree, he has to sing a song about it. If you pitch correct Murray’s or O’Hara’s performances, you strip away a lot of what they give their characters.
And going back on what I said about how Emma’s the lead, that doesn’t mean she needs to be perfect. Yes, she needs to be able to hold her own because Luke Evans’ singing is GOD TIER, but I’d rather have a slightly weaker voice with emotion than a technically perfect performance with no dimension to it.

Belle has always been my favourite Disney princess, because she’s such a relatable character. As you mentioned, yes, she’s a dreamer, girl who loves living in a fantasy world, girl who loves about reading romance, girl who is curious about the world. And these are the things that makes her Belle
I agree with everything you said and watching the film made me sad how they changed Belle. As if being a brave, kind hearted dreamer would not be enough woman for The Beast.
And how the fact that some of the line delivery was just soulless at times and didn’t feel like it had any emotion. She felt like she lacked any emotion too many times throughout the movie to be the Disney Belle. And yeah, she should know better from working on Harry Potter all those years. Actors have to portray the emotions and the feel of what we see on the big screen but whats not really there onset.
You know, I agree with everything in this video, and I actually think that’s what’s wrong with many young women today. They think that being rebellious, feisty, makes them really hot and desirable and strong. And when it’s written well, it works! Take Arwen, for example. She rebells against her father for wanting to marry a human. But she is kind and dignified and was willing to sacrifice herself all the way. She elevated Aragorn and respected him, treated him like an equal. Now, young women think that being strong means being just…plain rude and disrespectful…honestly deserving of someone splashing a glass of water on their face.

p.s. I used to love Emma Watson as Hermione then one day started resenting her bland acting and obnoxiously entitled attitude and ruining my favorite Disney Princess. Recently I've had more sympathy when I read about her struggles. I think her leaving acting (which sounds like it's what she's pretty much doing as she continues to pursue her education) is the best call for her. I'm happy for her, but I wish she would not have taken this beloved role if she was not in a happy state to do the role justice.
It makes me sad tbh, because this movie COULD have been sooo good. And now this is just kinda the live action beauty and beast we are stuck with 😢
if any actress should have played Belle, that it should have been Samantha Banks, a brunette, west-end performer, so can sing, and would have been an amazing performance
there was no chemistry with the Beast, in fact the best performances were Gaston and Lefou, they understood the assignment
but the film was so flat, and the dress, it lacked the "wow" moment, that was meant to be the most romantic moment in the film, and i've seen better cosplay outfits

The two biggest offenses for me were that cheap yellow prom dress and the fact that she needed to be portrayed as the inventor. There were times where she came off as thinking she was superior to her little town. Yes, she shouldn't have been criticized for teaching a child to read but did she really have to block the others from washing their clothes by taking over the town well (aka their water supply)? If Emma and the producers felt that Belle had to be inventive, they could have considered having her creating the music boxes as a hobby while her father remained the inventor. I love the animated BATB so much but this was very disappointing for all the reasons you pointed out and probably many more that I'll read about in the comments

Something the Emma Watson said that, while I understand, felt that the writers (and Emma herself considering she talked about having helped write Belle) missed completely was that she said she wanted the relationship between Belle and the Beast to feel more natural. Now I understand that if you do not realize in the animated movie that it does in fact take place over a decent amount of time, that the romance might seem a bit rushed, but here, nothing in the relationship felt natural. The Beast (while it is a bit understandable because he is a prince) felt too high and mighty, but Bell also acted as if she thought she was somehow better than him for most of the movie. And as far as the animated movie not understanding romance, when Beast "gives" Belle the library, in the animated movie, it was because he found out (through Lumiar) that she like books and it would be something she would enjoy, and he almost seems relieved when she does like it. But in the live action movie, he shows her the library as a way to simply show off how many books he has, and by extension how much he better he understands what he has read (he doesn't really understand them better, he just wants to show off.) None of their relationship felt natural.
Totally agree with you 💯 percent about everything that you said. I'm glad that I'm not the only one who feels this way and has issues with Belle's yellow ball gown. It's such so sad to me, because in the live action version of Cinderella during the ballroom scene, there's ladies that are dressed to represent other Disney Princesses. I absolutely love the gown that is supposed to be Belle's in that movie, so why couldn't we gotten that version of the gown? Beauty and the Beast is my favorite, animated version only though. I had such high hopes for the live action, but ended up being disappointed with it
When I first saw her skirt hitched up, I thought that she went to the restroom and forgot to untuck her skirt before shooting and that nobody noticed haha
The original BatB is my favorite Disney movie among my favorites. And when this live action came out I had a great time going with my family to see it. I was happy then because I wanted to share the experience with them and they liked the movie.
But with the years I realized I was obviously and shamelessly blinded by nostalgia and the fact the original is my favorite, so I was expecting and forcing myself to believe the live action was at the very least good.
It's been a while now that I see clearly and this live action is awful (I think Luke Evans, Josh Gad and maybe Kevin Kline are the only ones who did a good job with their characters but not even those save this one)
I agree with everything you explain here because it's true. Even that part about Belle's gestures and how Emma speaks some lines. Everything is a big shame tbh. Because the little details matter.
As for the Be Our Guest scene. It was her job to immerse us as the audience into believing she was entertained. And she didn't deliver. If it was boring to film that, I think it was on her in not making it believable enough for us and herself.
I think I'm gonna check more of your videos talking about this movie because I already liked this one. I hope you have one talking about the whole movie because, seriously, who could think it was ok for the castle staff to tell Belle about the enchantment? That baffles me till today and it feels like it makes the whole point of the movie fall apart...

i love this analysis, and the way you presented all your ideas just made for such a good video! :) but yeah, i agree so much. when this movie first came out i was OBSESSED. i had the soundtrack and everything. then i forgot about it, and then a few years ago i started seeing videos like these comparing the live action to the original and it's just so....dull. the orignal is full of life, and i relate to belle so much because, like u said, she is the "dreamer". but in the live action she is just so...meh?? 😭 like its not the same character. and this is not against emma watson at ALL, but she just doesn't scream "belle".
this is where i think the aladdin and cinderella remakes did a great job- they stayed true to the characters while adding a little more of their own touch. i haven't seen the little mermaid one so i can't speak for that one! but i personally LOVE the aladdin remake :) dont get me wrong, i still love all of disney's animated movies and appreciate all the effort put into them- especially the ones in the renaissance era- but i just had a lot of fun with the 2019 aladdin!!

I agree with you on all these points, the people involved with the remake in fact a lot of the Disney remakes make it clear they don't understand their own material. the dress to me is the biggest disappointment you can have a simple dress and have it be beautiful, if designed right.

Belle is the most greatest role model and Beauty and the Beast is one of the best romantic fairy tale which was loved by the whole world. Even Belle is my favorite Princess but this live-action it was awful in every way.

The Disney LA remakes just do not have the same charm that animation has. From 2017 Beauty and the Beast to 2023 Little Mermaid, it just lacks charm.

It doesn't matter if you're bored in real life. You're an actor, ACT amazed. This is why I'm not a fan of Emma Watson. She was good as a child actor, but I find her performances really bland. Plus her feministic view always seem to dominate every role she plays. Disappointing.
I don't like it, because they made it all about Emma Watson in this move, or it does seem like it. Making the dress more manageable for her, taking out the corset because she hates them (which makes the first dress look pretty bad being so scrunched up at the bodice), making her last dress to fit more with her preferences, change the character's personality because Emma wanted it. All about her, isn't it? It's not Beauty and the Beast, it's not Belle and the Beast, it's *Emma Watson* and the Beast (hardly, as no one writing it seemed to really care too much about his character either). I think they assumed people weren't there to see the remake or Belle or Beast, but the actress, which I'm sure wasn't the case for most people. I don't care about the actress, I only care to the extend if they have potential to play their role well... Emma clearly can not, she showed it well.
Belle is not Hermoine, she is not a nerdy smarty bookworm just because. She’s an adventurer but because she can’t leave she lives through books. She wants more out of life

Emma Watson being cast as Belle (and the way they mocked Lefou's character for his sexuality, though that is unrelated to the video) are the two biggest problems of this movie. As someone who has always strongly related to Belle, the way she plays her just isn't it. Watching her in this version feels like watching a character who is a mix of Emma Watson and Emma Watson's Hermione, not like watching Belle. It feels like she wanted to fix Belle and make her how she thought she should be, which is also something that kinda happened with Hermione in the HP movies with Steve Kloves being so biased in his writing and making her so perfect, something that she wasn't in the books and shouldn't have been in the movies. It's a shame. I enjoyed her performances in other things, but with these two characters she really missed the mark.
8:49 let me explain to you why this scene is so wrong in the 2017 version. In the animated version many people thinks the Best eat that way because it's a beast with no manners, but he eats in that way because HE CAN'T EAT NORMALLY WITH THAT TWO BIG FANGS!. But in the bad version Belle is like "OK , so if you don't ascend to my level , I'll be down to your level , whatever ", witch it doesn't make sense since she there is a "empoderated Belle". They all misunderstood the whole Beauty and the Beast concept , they thought it was just copy and paste the main parts and songs (so nostalgics won't complain later on) and for the feminists they would add all that crap of Belle being an inventor and her sassyness 😂. The result is a complete MESS

1. She straight up walks on the table when the ladies are trying to do laundry
2. Considering how they portrayed Gaston in the beginning, Belle feels more like the bad guy in the first meeting
3. She rejects the dinner in a very taunting manner
4. She actually shoved her father to the ground instead of volunteering herself
5. She forces Beast into the light with Lumiere instead of letting him do it like in the original
6. She uses the town’s water supply in the invention

Little moments add up quickly and ruin immersion.
I love Emma's character as a person but she was honestly absolutely unsuitable choice for this role in almost every possible way. Not just I honestly hate this remake... I hate that idea that they had to make Belle more like Emma because of all the contemporaly feminist ideas of femininity, like original Belle wasn't strong woman enough. You don't have to be tough and defiant to be feminist. You can be gentle, polite, compassionate, dreamy and strong and brave at the same time, just like the original Belle was and that actually made her so wonderful. But this idea of feminism just feels like women aren't allowed to express their femininity in their own unique way and they just have to fit into one scheme to be considered as a true feminist. Original Belle had her own dreams, she didn't necessarily need romantic love, she just wanted someone to accept her the way she is, listen to her and appriciate who she truly is, her dreams, her beautiful soul. She and the beast didn't need to bond through books and similar backstories (and even that didn't help Belle and the beast from the remake to feel natural). They just truly saw the soul of one another, appriciated the best of one another and had true connection that felt natural and honest and few scenes were enough to show us how they developed feelings for each other. Belle from the ramake doesn't even seem like a person who would be truly able to fall in love with the beast and the beast felt so insecure and unsure around her all the time which felt so wrong because they were supposed to feel more and more comfortable around each other during their time together. But it just felt like she tolerates him but still sees him as less than her and he just akwardly tries to reach her but doesn't know how.
Emma is not really a good actor…I thought she was very good in the first Harry Potter movie, some of her deliveries were perfection, but she became too self conscious from the second movie onwards, she became so stiff and I don’t know what’s up with her eyebrows because they always go up every single time she’s about to deliver a line. It’s like she’s having speech constipation and lifting her eyebrows helps? She never did recover. I don’t know ever what happened to the girl who was so brilliant in the first Harry Potter😢
I think her being an inventor could actually work! After all, inventors need their imagination. She could have totally been a dreamy, imaginative inventor type who tries to make a bunch of interesting (but maybe not super practical) contraptions. More art than science, maybe.
This movie has too much exposition. For instance, after Belle has agreed to take her father's place in the dungeon, and is then freed by Lumiere, she is surprised that she's talking to a candle. He then corrects her and claims that he is a candelabra. This line of dialogue is really unnecessary. There is a similar exchange, when the Enchanted Objects show her to her room, and Belle picks up a hairbrush, and expects it to talk. Cogsworth then has to state the obvious: That the hairbrush is merely a hairbrush. It's like the writers just assumed that the audience was dumb, or maybe this dialogue is supposed to be funny, but it just falls flat.
As I see so many critisizing the live-action remakes so much and saying that the originals are better, I'm reminded of the Nostalgia Critic's line in hus review of How the Grinch Stole Christmas.
"If you can't remake it better, don't remake it at all."
Reminds me of when this movie came out and I was studying in an entertainment field and a friend asked what I thought of it, and I had a hard time telling them what I liked about the movie that wasn't the props. Just racking my brain I didn't like Emma's take on Belle, while the background had beautiful setting it was too heavily CGI, too much vocaloids, etc. I liked the costuming, but even then they missed it whether it was properly wearing the appropriate attire for the period (sorry Emma that dress needed a corset and some volume, that ball dress is known for look like a discounted prom dress not the 'wow' dress everyone had high hopes for) and you're on point with that last dress as it's the most beautiful piece but way too modern!
I think the only good that came out of this movie was the song Evermore that Alan Menken came back to write with Tim Rice a song that Menken thought would finally give the Beast his chance for a solo song. Sure it's computerized but it is a beautiful song that adds more to Beast's development that the animated film limited.
The irony is that you can tell there was a push to put Belle into this heroine arc that really made the character stand offish and unlikable, while giving Beast a more softer connection that the audience ended up feeling a little more sympathy for. Those bits you picked up really highlights how much those who were in charge really didn't understand Belle's role, in the end the Beast ended up looking for favorable than the supposed "jerk" he was supposed to be.
