Dr. Lucy Burns - 'Menopause, Perimenopause and Weight Management'

  • Dr. Lucy Burns is a GP in based in Frankston just south of Melbourne, Australia. She graduated from Monash Medical school in 1993 and received her fellowship with the RACGP in 1998. She also has a diploma of obstetrics, a certificate in clinical hypnosis and has board certification as a lifestyle physician with ASLM.
    Lucy worked in general practice whilst having her children until 2005, and then worked for the Department of Defence at HMAS Cerberus as a civilian medical officer for 13 years. During that time she noticed a large increase in obesity in the current serving members and the new recruits.
    Dr. Burns has muscular dystrophy which impairs her mobility. In her 20’s she managed her weight with exercise. Alas, this is no longer possible and she found that as she got older following the standard low fat style of dieting was unsustainable and unsuccessful. She became overweight/obese and was insulin resistant.
    Another doctor friend introduced her to keto and she was hooked. A year later she opened her low carb general practice clinic called 'Epiphany Medical Weight Loss'. Along with her colleague Dr. Mary Barson, the pair have also formed a business called 'Real Life Medicine' and have an on-line program that addresses both the physiological and psychological causes of obesity. Her strong belief is to empower people to manage their health through nutrition and the low carb way of living.

    So you recommend low carb and more protein? How about fats? I've seen a few who claim that eating lots of butter (and I guess fatty meats) has helped reduce menopause (perimenopause) symptoms. Does eating fat also help with hormone production perhaps? Could it be that the low fat movement is at least in part to blame for some of the suffering through menopause symptoms that most women seem to be facing these days? Thank you for this talk focusing on women of this age. It's just a shame that young women may never hear about it until it's hitting them. How do you target a younger audience to help them preventatively? Young women need to know how important this is!

      Given the young women are buying into plant based and vegan movements, it will be a hard sell to get them to eat animal fats. I tell them they do not want to look like me at 50, so eat up all the cholestrol, but I get eye rolled all the time. Wish I'd known this important piece of info in my teens. Things might have been oh so different.

      Dr. Mindy Pelz focuses on women and has written a book about Menopause. She is more on the keto and fasting side, not so much carnivore, but she talks a lot about hormones and the importance of fat. Great RUclips Channel as well...

    I have been doing low carb (20gr/day) for about 5 years. There are endless versions of this diet out there but what worked for me was eating protein (meat) and fat (like cheese) until satiety. I barely touch vegetables and only eat some strawberries and occasionally some blueberries. I’m going through menopause now and have zero symptoms…. Ok, maybe some sneezing and runny nose that has been reported by some women. I did however have to cut back on the fat and watch my carbs like a hawk to manage my weight. I do yin yoga for flexibility and meditation to manage stress. I feel great!

      up the animal fats, cut the carbs. maybe even try high fat carnivore. really, thank me later. we need cholesterol and fats to build every hormone. fat doesnt make you fat if you dont combine it with carbs and dont eat seed oils as fat has almost no insulin response

      Yay!!! I'm 65 yo F with CAC of zero and cardiologist, head of dept in a major hospital recommended low dose statin. I said no thank you, and said that even if my CAC had not been zero I would not take one. I'm an LDL hyper responder. I've reversed my diabetes simply by reducing my carbs and all my numbers for my blood test are great (except the LDL has increased but I'm not worried about it, only the medical professionals are). My ALT has gone from 45 down to 13. I'm not going to risk messing things up by taking a statin. And yes, I have watched a lot of videos about it so I have made an informed decision.

    I’ve personally never wished away any of my internal organs or have been disappointed that I still have all of them.

      I thought I heard "unfortunate" as well but my brain corrected it to "fortunate" and I just continued listening thinking I must have misheard. I guess that's because I feel fortunate for my baby-growing organ which grew me three beautiful children. I do understand that sometimes the uterus can betray us but there must be some benefits to keeping it as long as possible if you are not having pain and lengthy bleeding.

    Sorry, but why do we need to hear that crap that people used to die in there 40s all the time? This numbers are the AVERAGE age, and does not mean that we get older now, but means that the numbers of babies and children dying went down massively.
    If you managed to grow up into an adult you could life into your 80s like today. But child mortality went down and that is why it seems we get older today.
    In the last 150 years infant mortality changed from about 25% down to under 1% in Europe, that screws with the numbers. Nature would not have developed a system to shut down our reproductive sytem if we where ment to die before it.

      True- I used to be amazed in the rural graveyards where i worked how many "peasants" made it into their 80's 150 years ago.... real food and hard work, and their genes where probably 6 of 10 kids made it to adulthood....

      To me it doesn't make a lot of sense that sex hormones stop for those who have ovaries and not those who have testes. I don't think any other animal has to suffer that hell. However, it also does make sense - if one gets pregnant at an advanced age, there are more complications, so the ability to do that wouldn't be selected for in an animal that lives as long as us, even if the way that's achieved is unpleasant as menopause is.

      @@ellenorbjornsdottir1166 A theory is that humans with our very intense child rearing needs simply survive better if not all of us have children, at least not at the same time. A healthy grandmother that is not going to have her own babies any more will have time to support teen kids as well as the first young grandchildren and the longer she is in that period and still healthy she increases the overall survival of her offspring and the offspring of her offspring. 30 years of fertility often leads to more than enough children to replace her and a male partner anyway.
      The same way, same sex attraction can be a further positive to human survival. If some men and women dote on their nieces and nephews and are free to adopt orphans more children survive in the group in total even if these people are less likely to reproduce themselves.

    Estrogen also maintains bone mass. When bone mass decreases, toxins such as lead are released. Lead interferes with the insulin receptors.

    I’m a man married to the same brilliant lady for going on 47 years now. I’m always interested in continuing my support for her in all ways. Mentally, physically, and sexually. It is inappropriate for men to become burdens on their wife’s life. We are both in our 70’s, are best friends, and see many more years together in front of us. Thanks for this posting. It should be mandatory for all men.

    Thanks, a good presentation, though i had hoped it would focus on a little more on the nutrition and diet side, and talked about differences between men and women, and macro nutrient requirements (Fat v Protien) when eating a low carb diet at this stage of life. My partner and i are eating essentially the same things, but we suspect that it is benifiting me more than her, so we are looking for information to optimise her macros. Any suggestions?

      there aren't really set macros for anyone, your wife needs to play around and see what works best for her specifically. I can tell you from my experience as 6 years low carb now, my best results come from a close balance of fat and protein (fat grams around 105, protein grams around 140 and carbs at less than 10), but I also eliminated almost all plants, and the ones I do still occasionally eat are cooked - this got rid of the bloating. Tell her to cut out dairy as well, it messes with a lot of women that are trying to lose fat. Although butter or ghee is fine to eat.

    Technically there's 4 types of estrogen in the human body. Fetal liver cells produce estetrol, and it diffuses through the placenta and ends up in the pregnant woman's blood. There's some new medications being developed based on synthetic bioidentical estetrol.

    A bit strange on men taking taking some of the burden from women and asserting that "women are over represented in work and home issues". It seems that men are over represented in workplace safety issues. Women have an extra 4 years of life expectancy so I don't see how men can "carry of women's burden". It is not for men to do anything for women but for women to be self reliant, just as men are expected to be.
    The increase in life expectancy in the 20th century is mostly explained by the decrease in childhood mortality so the increase in life span is not as great as it looks, even though it is in part real, but more a measure or childhood health. This tells us that the "low hanging fruit" in life expectancy gains has already ben picked and that future gains will come in smaller increments at greater cost and complexity i the future. In fact in some countries #PeakLifeExpectany may have been reached, even before covid but that will become more clear, if real, in the years ahead.

      Especially when you consider the difference between single men and women in those home "duties", where single women spend loads more time in home work, suggesting a different standard, and that married men do more of that work than single men, ie. they are already helping. Of course, in any relationship, it should be give and take from both sides.
