Breakfast might be eggs and broccoli, or fish, or high fat yoghurt and protein powder with berries and nuts....not keto toast, well maybe a slice every 10 days or so if I baked this quarter. Without lookalikes and sweet things, the complete switch out was easy. I was actually keeping myself addicted. When I hear "I could not possibility do without xxx", I think... Yep addicted but won't admit it!
I see the search for a look alike frequently. I am on the blood type O FB and it comes up every day. Even when we use our food list that says we can’t do grains there is the hope for a waffle that maybe uses that magic ingredient that will look like a waffle, smell like a waffle and taste like a waffle with a no sugar syrup. Then, keeping all that under 1 0 grams of carbohydrates !

I'm finding it much harder to not eat sugar/carbs and have had to concede to myself that, just like alcohol, if I start I might not stop. As you say, lookalikes and sweet things are keeping me addicted.
Can relate, went through alternative baking phase, just to see and know alternatives available which good knowledge to have, cooking for others, and my brunch re intermittent fasting, now most often steamed broccoli, & green beans with some fetta, or goat's cheese, and a prebaked chicken drumstick, or other leftover protein if I feel need, or an egg or 2, or when feel like,egg and bacon fry up with some rocket to start, or vege, egg muffins, as per the glucose goddess where food order can also reduce blood sugar spiking by as much as 70%, all best 🙂
I find that ‘death’ is a wake up call. I keep the word ‘inflammation’ at the forefront of my reasoning as I had a triple bypass at aged 40 . At the time the blocked arteries and the eventual heart attack were put down to bad luck as (at the time 1999) metabolic health and its consequences was not a ‘thing’. And to make matters worse I was advised to follow the food pyramid which we now know was upside down. Two mini strokes later I found low carb and nothing will stop me . Now 2 years in and feeling younger and fitter than ever.
Have you heard of the CAC score test to check your ❤️ ? Saturated fat without high sugar does no harm at all and the CAC score number can also improve with our very low carb woe
That is so true about 1 is too much. 1,000 is never enough. I’ve been following that concept knowing I’m a sugar addict. I’ve never heard that phrase before this. My daughter tells me that I must have cheat days. She just doesn’t understand the addiction and it’s much better for me to have none. I feel so much better. I have the self confidence that I’ve never had.
Very true, @bredadunham2442, once I take that first cookie or bite of pasta, I throw all control away and indulge. It takes me 3-4 days to get back on track. You would think I would remember that I feel much better on low carb, physically and mentally, but off I go! Best to not have that first bite.
Thank you for this really good performance. I can relate to allmost everything you said. Your passion and compassion makes it easy to overcome feelings of shame and hopelessness. Your concept is such a holistic approach. I wish I was a bit nearer to Australia, so I could join some lessons (I'm from germany). Due to the internet I can participate in those events, for which I'm very grateful. Me myself have a long history of eating disorders and several severe health issues such as IBS, autoimmune diseases, ADHD, mental diseases, depression, infertility, and so on. I am so much better since I stopped eating starchy carbs like bread, noodles, rice and sugar. I have been almost 3 month carnivore. After eliminating everything but protein and fat I introduced some vegetables and occasionally fruits with lower glycemic index. Regarding to my autoimmune issues I quit milk and eggs, but hope to reintroduce it as a treat ....maybe. Will see how I react. I did some walking, little to no exercises, deep breathing and meditation once in a while, affirmations (self created), declutter activities at home and sometimes intermittent fasting. I vary between 2 and 4 meals a day, I track my meals here and there just to be aware where I'm at, my everage calory intake differs from 1750 to 2150 depending on my activities and when I need something sweet I eat a bit of fruit like an apple or so after a meal, so my insuline does not spike to high. After mentioning all this I come to the conclusion, that I suffered physically and metally my whole lifetime from a dramatically lack of nutrients. So much pain and shame and lost of lifetime. I wish I could turn back time. I am allmost 50 now and got into menopause far to early in my thirties. Can't get pregnant anymore. What I can do, is start from now and do my best to recover. Health first, then weight loss, never dieting. Spending most of my life being on a diet I feel liberated. I'm not dieting anymore. I just eat differently. And the pounds just start to drop as a side effect. Since I developed this habits I have lost 11kg in approximately 7 months and my overall health has improved tremendously.
When I couldn't bend over to tie my shoes , I stopped all carbs and starch ,lost 15 pounds in 3 weeks my blood sugar went from 10.1 to 5.4 , no insulin for me Doc is what I told him , the doc phoned last week after doing my blood work ,and said what ever your doing keep doing it , wasn't interested in what I did to lose the weight or what lowered my daily sugar test , I quickly said NO CARBS click lol
I think they take obligatory vow before they get their license that states they need to follow the guidlines which are outlined by the health agency. His duty is then to follow said guidelines to his patients but also to protect his patients health. This is a paradox for all doctors because they know the guidelines are giving people health problems, but they can't oppose them. And yet he also needs to protect your health, thus he says he doesnt care what you were doing. He escaped that paradox. NO CARBS click cracked me so much :D
I have pulled of low carb keto for 5 years. I am at a healthy weight and look younger. The mental aspect is not to be underestimated. BUT it does help to establish your big WHY! Be a big boy or girl and establish your own WHY. The rest is just about talking yourself into doing what you should do😉
exactly. With the WHY, anything is easy. Why don't I smoke? I don't want to die of lung cancer. Why LCHF? because I don't want to die of diabetes or heart attack or alzheimers. Yes, be an adult and find your WHY.

Thank you for your content Dr Lucy Burns. May I add sleep, more specifically "lack thereof" makes me personally, seek out food to "feel better". In otherwords, I am in need of a "pick-me-up" when feeling lousy after a late or restless night sleep.
I find what helped me was not to say I will never eat bread again, but to have 2 small wholemeal bread rolls once a week on a Sunday and to eat them with butter and salad. That way I am drastically reducing my bread intake but I know I will have some bread on a regular basis but still get the physical benefits of an overall low carb diet. As time went on, I didnt actually want a bread roll every Sunday. I am fortunate that I was never particularly into sweet foods anyway. I will have a small scoop of ice cream if I go out for food maximum once a month. That works for me, but appreciate for some people they may need to cut all carbs entirely. If you are a crisp fiend like me, try substituting them with pork scratchings which are way lower in carb and will fill you up much more quickly than potato crisps. If you are eating a good quality low carb (high fat, medium protein) diet, you will find you get much less hungry than when you were eating a high carb diet, so you wont want to snack often anyway.

I did a low carb diet back in 2020. Blood sugars went from high to normal. Lost 30kg in weight in 6 months. In 2022 went back to eating carbs. Gained 25kg and blood sugars back up to over 12 mmol/l. Now back on low carb. Lost 6kg in a month. Blood sugars now at 8 mmol/l.

As a former sugar addict, my family don't help when they buy and leave the chocolates and sweets in my view in the fridge. As a 95% carnivore, I do not eat fruit or veges - I just feel better not eating them, so my food choices are limited. I make fat bombs made with butter and bacon chips which help with the cravings. I lost 41kg almost 2 years ago and maintained that weight for 12 months until I changed jobs and became complacent towards my diet - started putting on weight, and am concerned that my GP will try to get me back on meds because they are my only option. I don't think so, so I have recommenced being more strict. For me, it is the only way to convince my GP.
Hi Peter. You don’t have to convince your doctor of anything - they’re not your boss - you employ them with your taxes. You have free choice - the principle of ‘informed consent’ means you have the right not to consent with what they say, particularly when they are wrong, as so many are, on diet and nutrition. It’s great that you lost 41kg, that’s a huge achievement, but you did that, your doctor didn’t. Good luck - you did it once so you know the solution. If your doctor isn’t recommending that solution and isn’t tackling the root cause but is, instead, just pushing meds, I think you’re with the wrong doctor. Sorry for the lecture :)
GP's are just sales people for the medical industrial complex. Not sure why you would want to "people please" a salesman of toxic products? Maybe just make a protein drink when you have "the nibbles". Sip slowly. Intersperse with plain water - you may find your body just decides, alright that'll do.
No matter how keto I start my day, later in the day eating sugary food. Know I’m addicted. I’ve been doctoring with low dopamine for 40 years. Now with this pattern I’m gaining weight. I’m reaching out for any RUclips video that might help me. Anyone?
"Sticking to" is BS. You need to not want to do something negative and therefore there is no mental conflict. So in the same way you don't want to drink a glass of bleach, you need to not want to eat bread, cakes or chocolate etc. Abstinence will always fail.
I’m a (still!) active 63 year old professional gardener who has always been skinny…as in 5’ 10” & 130 pounds skinny! I’m sinewy, fairly strong but I was always lean, with never any sign of a stomach! I’ve never smoked, hardly ever drink alcohol, but have always had a demanding sweet tooth…which I have succesfully managed to suppress for the last 10 months! I’m trying to eat more red meat, eggs and full-fat (sheep / goat / buffalo) cheese now. Also full-fat cow milk yoghurt. But I have very high cholesterol. So the question is : would a low-carb diet be suitable for the likes of me? It often seems aimed at people who were / are overweight and maybe have sedentary jobs. So I’m confused whether it would be right for the likes of me. I’d really appreciate some advice from anyone out there. Many thanks!
Hey Steve, take it from an overweight person half your age: from what I understand of the low carb science, it promotes longevity along with keeping your body weight in check. So major props to you for being so healthy, and I figure low carb will just help you stay as healthy as possible. Certainly can't hurt, especially since I hear from older folks that low carbs makes them feel 20 years younger! Also regarding cholesterol: it's a bit of a red herring, watch the talks by Dr. Paul Mason - high cholesterol is a terrible metric for health, and it seems it is in fact associated with longer health. The important thing is not to eat a lot of fat with a lot of sugar. If you're completely healthy, but have high cholesterol, it probably doesn't mean a lot. Take care
Another big point, is planning. The only time I successfully started and lost 50 lbs with low carb was when I planned out weeks in ahead. I planned where my meals would come from, what I would be eating, and even what time I would cook or buy the meals. It was the one and only time I successfully sustained the diet for over 6 months.
Dissenting opinion: Feelings only appear to emanate from thoughts, especially in the clinical counseling setting, where experience is artificially created and mere analogy to real life. Thoughts are as likely to emanate from feelings as vice versa. Clue: an infant without language for thought experiences feelings. You are probably right that binge behavior arises to manage unpleasant feelings and memories. CBT fails in real life because it does not engage at the source. CBT attempts to stifle feeling instead of integrating it, by telling more and more elaborate stories. It is precisely "beating down" your own physiology, even while you say that it isn't. Your physiology is your core intelligence, and it will not permit its cancelation. CBT, at best, will provide a weak and temporary placebo effect. This is what is measured in CBT clinical studies. The literature is rife with examples that show the effect is not a lasting one. People (the majority) who are denial oriented insist on taking this path. They are convinced that it is "change" when it is actually status quo. Sad that we just don't understand emotional life and emotional growth. Naming parts of the brain and giving them discrete functions, like parts in a machine is misleading. It's just embellishing a story that supports denial of emotional reality.
Flick the switch! I've always been reasonably healthy, but even going low carb, I still maintained the bottle or 2 per week red wine !! ? I then eliminated the seed oils and started on animal based diet.. Finally, my silly brain decided to stop the wine..
@@T-aka-TCoffee is definitely not a necessity haha. Takes some adjusting to stop drinking it when you’re so used to it. Start by switching to decaf, then weaning yourself off entirely.
Why should we give up caffeinated beverages? Caffeine is the most benign drug there is. I love vodka, too but nothing could induce me to give up tea. Life wouldn’t be worth living without it.
For me, one meal a day carnivore is cheaper than my old eating habits. As Dr. Berry says, even if you eat crappy, cheap processed meats as your version of carnivore, it’s still 100x better for you than the standard diet. That said, you are absolutely right about cost - I’m scared that the price of meat is going to shoot up even higher. Good luck!
Actually, gram for gram, carby stuff costs more than meat, if you count nutrition + satiety versus empty calories + craving more. PS plus the medical bills later, of course.
I call poppycock on the cost. The most complete food is eggs, there is nothing wrong with an egg only diet to supply your nutrition. Eggs, and whatever is on sale whether ground beef, canned sardines, sausage with a snall amount of low-carb veggie. Cooking is simplified, fewer meals are required to get through the day.
Thank you, this presentation was validating for me. I’ve been on my low carb journey earnestly for 5 years. I reversed T2D of 12 years and have kept it better controlled with this way of living than with any meds - by no means perfect though and that’s ok. THIS IS how I changed and became so happy in my own skin at 58yo. Now reaching 63 soon and the challenge for me is stepping from a wellness system like this talk describes into a sickness driven system to find new sources of person centred, wholistic science based support that engages my calm rational brain. I was so even keeled (well, regulated and modulated in body mind and soul), feeling so well until covid met my type A personality and totally re-programmed my brain and body for a state of perpetual dysautonomia. I have the clinical knowledge I have the clinical techniques to manage my symptoms but that is not enough. I was 40 plus years an occupational therapist specialist in sensory processing dysfunction. This is my thing. But my GP gaslights me so. So few functional docs here in NZ. QQQQ Any suggestions on where or who to go to here on the Deep South of NZ?

Even tho I’ve managed to overcome a sugar addiction, I do find myself comfort eating when bored or stressed - but at least I eat only LCHF real food, zero processed stuff. I can resist any temptation to have biscuits, cakes or chocolates. I will try to use some of the strategies described, with a couple of the trigger events being very pertinent to my upbringing. I am not capable of understanding why anyone would have difficulties sticking to the low carb ketogenic diet. Perhaps that's because I have NEVER liked sweet foods. In fact, as a child if I ate a sweet food, I would throw up. Besides the fact that I didn't like sweet foods, I had a bad reaction to them and so I've gotten along very well without them. And so all I had to do was eliminate the higher carb vegetables from my life. I do like vegetables but it was not difficult for me to do away with them as well. Nor do I like baked goods. So I found it very easy to stick to meat and very low carb vegetables for most of my life. From the very first year of my adoption of the keto diet (about 35 years ago before it became all the rage) I lost 80 pounds (all I needed to lose)... 80 pounds of high carb vegetables, no doubt. For 35 years I have never needed to see a doctor. My energy increased greatly on the keto diet and my mood is always positive. At age 73, I can still turn continuous cartwheels in my back yard with my grandchildren. And for 25 years, I have never had any health issues, not even a headache or a cold in the winter. So as I said, I am not capable of understanding why anyone would have any problem with the ketogenic diet when you can plainly see the benefits it provides.
I lost 18 kgs / 39 lbs doing no specific cardio ( NEAT... was my go-to form of moving more ) - weights and body weights ( because I have a desk bound job ) was my only form of specific exercise, and that was paired with OMAD. When tracked - it comprised of 60% fat and 20% each from carbs and Protein.
I make bread using 2 egg whites ( whisk to stiff peaks) 1Tbsp Gk yoghurt, 1 Tbsp egg white protein powder (or whey pro), pinch Xanthan gum gum. (Multiply this up). G Ire
Didn't find it difficult to go Keto except when eating out. Hard to get meals without carbs. Fortunately (or unfortunately) I don't eat out often, say twice a week. Bacon and eggs is often available, many places refuse just to cook a hamburger or a steak without the meal. Can order the meals and just not eat all the junk supplied with them (money isn't really the issue) but this isn't really satisfying as an approach.
Why do some people call eating low carb a "lifestyle"? I was happy with my lifestyle before going low carb, and have only changed the way I eat, not my lifestyle. It turns people off eating healthy low carb when they're told that eating better requires a lifestyle change. It makes it sound too difficult, when it isn't. Eating properly is not a "lifestyle".
Hello... I would have to say my life style has changed significantly since making a switch to low carb (& intermittent fasting - not mentioned in this talk). Some choices are not popular (I.e. my daughter likened it to social suicide) dining out at restaurants is no longer a preferred night as I find sifting through the menu a challenge. I now opt for healthy cafes serving brunch. The menu have simpler low carb options to choose from. Alcohol plays a minimal role now when socialising. Late nights are no longer preferred, as lack of good quality sleep bring about poor food choices. And the extra energy I've gained from eliminating carbs has gifted me the choice of many physical activities I want to engage in (and there are many on offer on the GC, Qld. So yes, I can say my lifestyle has changed... for the better 🙌
Eating is a PART of lifestyle, in a very regular partaking of! No-one has to change their whole lifestyle to become healthy, only the unhealthy aspects of it. If eating crappy food by choice got you here, then changing to eating healthy food by choice will get you where you need to be. Think of it as a whole/real food lifestyle/way of eating/living as opposed to a junk/carb/processed/convenient food lifestyle/way of eating/living. Our great grandparents had better lifestyles simply because there weren't convenience foods back then, and party foods were kept for parties. They may not have lived quite as long as people do now, but I'm certain that they were healthier for way longer than our current situation. I don't want to be kept alive by expensive meds that have frustrating and multiple side effects, when healthy eating will prove to be more beneficial for my body and my wallet in the long run.

Seen my GP today, chol numbers all over the place, i asked what the lipid sub fraction looked like, he didn't know what i was talking about or referring too, gave me a script for fenobitrate and wasn't interested in anything i had to say or suggest. Even after telling him i stopped my antidepressants and i feel better then i have in years. Now my BP is through the roof and im ready to break shit. Just worried about the numbers and giving scripts, and oh boy he didn't like when i said my mum (had seen this dr for many years) took all the meds he wanted and the specialist advice and still died at 69. Im so furious at this guy, even has a sign on the wall saying a good gp never stops learning.
Does he take your blood pressure two or three times in the visit. Usually the third reading is more accurate as you have time to relax. Also, you can get a blood pressure monitor to wear for a week to get more accurate readings.
Don't restrict calories. Dieting is the leading cause of obesity. Obesity is not a disease. Your weight has nothing to do with your health. Just eat meat.
For some people, if they eat sugary processed food, or even sweet keto food, they go off the rails and it snowballs into days…weeks…whatever, and they gain weight. Not eating the trigger foods keeps them on track.
Too many carbohydrates ruin metabolism. Don't need much water, end up going to the toilet too much. Then what about constipation ingesting low carbohydrate foods?
Recok it's easy I've been doing it for almost 5 years... I believe it's true that if a person has cravings for any type carbs after a month or so it means that person is still having some of them .
Do not be fooled into believing that you and another are one in the same. If that were so, even you would be able to eat a high carb diet successfully as many do all their long life.
I have been Low carb for 10 weeks. So boring. We nedketo recipes for steak sauces that are simple and do not require fresh herbs and ingredients we do not have- ex. truffle salt, for example so this video does not give me what i want.
I started low carb for the weight loss. I stay on low carb (5 years later) because of the multiple unexpected health benefits.

As a serial dieter now 67, the only way I can combat being hooked on carbs is to eat high protein/fat. Minimal carbs since mid August. Great talk. 👏

That is so true about 1 is too much. 1,000 is never enough. I’ve been following that concept knowing I’m a sugar addict. I’ve never heard that phrase before this. My daughter tells me that I must have cheat days. She just doesn’t understand the addiction and it’s much better for me to have none. I feel so much better. I have the self confidence that I’ve never had.
Very true, @bredadunham2442, once I take that first cookie or bite of pasta, I throw all control away and indulge. It takes me 3-4 days to get back on track. You would think I would remember that I feel much better on low carb, physically and mentally, but off I go! Best to not have that first bite.

Your concept is such a holistic approach. I wish I was a bit nearer to Australia, so I could join some lessons (I'm from germany). Due to the internet I can participate in those events, for which I'm very grateful. Me myself have a long history of eating disorders and several severe health issues such as IBS, autoimmune diseases, ADHD, mental diseases, depression, infertility, and so on.
I am so much better since I stopped eating starchy carbs like bread, noodles, rice and sugar. I have been almost 3 month carnivore. After eliminating everything but protein and fat I introduced some vegetables and occasionally fruits with lower glycemic index. Regarding to my autoimmune issues I quit milk and eggs, but hope to reintroduce it as a treat ....maybe. Will see how I react.
I did some walking, little to no exercises, deep breathing and meditation once in a while, affirmations (self created), declutter activities at home and sometimes intermittent fasting. I vary between 2 and 4 meals a day, I track my meals here and there just to be aware where I'm at, my everage calory intake differs from 1750 to 2150 depending on my activities and when I need something sweet I eat a bit of fruit like an apple or so after a meal, so my insuline does not spike to high.
After mentioning all this I come to the conclusion, that I suffered physically and metally my whole lifetime from a dramatically lack of nutrients. So much pain and shame and lost of lifetime. I wish I could turn back time. I am allmost 50 now and got into menopause far to early in my thirties. Can't get pregnant anymore.
What I can do, is start from now and do my best to recover. Health first, then weight loss, never dieting. Spending most of my life being on a diet I feel liberated. I'm not dieting anymore. I just eat differently. And the pounds just start to drop as a side effect.
Since I developed this habits I have lost 11kg in approximately 7 months and my overall health has improved tremendously.
When I couldn't bend over to tie my shoes , I stopped all carbs and starch ,lost 15 pounds in 3 weeks my blood sugar went from 10.1 to 5.4 , no insulin for me Doc is what I told him , the doc phoned last week after doing my blood work ,and said what ever your doing keep doing it , wasn't interested in what I did to lose the weight or what lowered my daily sugar test , I quickly said NO CARBS click lol
I think they take obligatory vow before they get their license that states they need to follow the guidlines which are outlined by the health agency. His duty is then to follow said guidelines to his patients but also to protect his patients health.
This is a paradox for all doctors because they know the guidelines are giving people health problems, but they can't oppose them. And yet he also needs to protect your health, thus he says he doesnt care what you were doing. He escaped that paradox.

I have pulled of low carb keto for 5 years. I am at a healthy weight and look younger. The mental aspect is not to be underestimated. BUT it does help to establish your big WHY! Be a big boy or girl and establish your own WHY. The rest is just about talking yourself into doing what you should do😉
exactly. With the WHY, anything is easy. Why don't I smoke? I don't want to die of lung cancer. Why LCHF? because I don't want to die of diabetes or heart attack or alzheimers. Yes, be an adult and find your WHY.

Thank you for your content Dr Lucy Burns. May I add sleep, more specifically "lack thereof" makes me personally, seek out food to "feel better". In otherwords, I am in need of a "pick-me-up" when feeling lousy after a late or restless night sleep.
I find what helped me was not to say I will never eat bread again, but to have 2 small wholemeal bread rolls once a week on a Sunday and to eat them with butter and salad. That way I am drastically reducing my bread intake but I know I will have some bread on a regular basis but still get the physical benefits of an overall low carb diet. As time went on, I didnt actually want a bread roll every Sunday. I am fortunate that I was never particularly into sweet foods anyway. I will have a small scoop of ice cream if I go out for food maximum once a month. That works for me, but appreciate for some people they may need to cut all carbs entirely. If you are a crisp fiend like me, try substituting them with pork scratchings which are way lower in carb and will fill you up much more quickly than potato crisps. If you are eating a good quality low carb (high fat, medium protein) diet, you will find you get much less hungry than when you were eating a high carb diet, so you wont want to snack often anyway.

I did a low carb diet back in 2020. Blood sugars went from high to normal. Lost 30kg in weight in 6 months. In 2022 went back to eating carbs. Gained 25kg and blood sugars back up to over 12 mmol/l. Now back on low carb. Lost 6kg in a month. Blood sugars now at 8 mmol/l.

As a former sugar addict, my family don't help when they buy and leave the chocolates and sweets in my view in the fridge. As a 95% carnivore, I do not eat fruit or veges - I just feel better not eating them, so my food choices are limited. I make fat bombs made with butter and bacon chips which help with the cravings. I lost 41kg almost 2 years ago and maintained that weight for 12 months until I changed jobs and became complacent towards my diet - started putting on weight, and am concerned that my GP will try to get me back on meds because they are my only option. I don't think so, so I have recommenced being more strict. For me, it is the only way to convince my GP.
Hi Peter. You don’t have to convince your doctor of anything - they’re not your boss - you employ them with your taxes. You have free choice - the principle of ‘informed consent’ means you have the right not to consent with what they say, particularly when they are wrong, as so many are, on diet and nutrition. It’s great that you lost 41kg, that’s a huge achievement, but you did that, your doctor didn’t. Good luck - you did it once so you know the solution. If your doctor isn’t recommending that solution and isn’t tackling the root cause but is, instead, just pushing meds, I think you’re with the wrong doctor. Sorry for the lecture :)

GP's are just sales people for the medical industrial complex. Not sure why you would want to "people please" a salesman of toxic products? Maybe just make a protein drink when you have "the nibbles". Sip slowly. Intersperse with plain water - you may find your body just decides, alright that'll do.
No matter how keto I start my day, later in the day eating sugary food. Know I’m addicted. I’ve been doctoring with low dopamine for 40 years. Now with this pattern I’m gaining weight. I’m reaching out for any RUclips video that might help me. Anyone?
"Sticking to" is BS. You need to not want to do something negative and therefore there is no mental conflict. So in the same way you don't want to drink a glass of bleach, you need to not want to eat bread, cakes or chocolate etc.

I’m a (still!) active 63 year old professional gardener who has always been skinny…as in 5’ 10” & 130 pounds skinny! I’m sinewy, fairly strong but I was always lean, with never any sign of a stomach! I’ve never smoked, hardly ever drink alcohol, but have always had a demanding sweet tooth…which I have succesfully managed to suppress for the last 10 months! I’m trying to eat more red meat, eggs and full-fat (sheep / goat / buffalo) cheese now. Also full-fat cow milk yoghurt. But I have very high cholesterol. So the question is : would a low-carb diet be suitable for the likes of me? It often seems aimed at people who were / are overweight and maybe have sedentary jobs. So I’m confused whether it would be right for the likes of me. I’d really appreciate some advice from anyone out there. Many thanks!
Hey Steve, take it from an overweight person half your age: from what I understand of the low carb science, it promotes longevity along with keeping your body weight in check. So major props to you for being so healthy, and I figure low carb will just help you stay as healthy as possible. Certainly can't hurt, especially since I hear from older folks that low carbs makes them feel 20 years younger!
Also regarding cholesterol: it's a bit of a red herring, watch the talks by Dr. Paul Mason - high cholesterol is a terrible metric for health, and it seems it is in fact associated with longer health. The important thing is not to eat a lot of fat with a lot of sugar. If you're completely healthy, but have high cholesterol, it probably doesn't mean a lot.

Another big point, is planning. The only time I successfully started and lost 50 lbs with low carb was when I planned out weeks in ahead. I planned where my meals would come from, what I would be eating, and even what time I would cook or buy the meals. It was the one and only time I successfully sustained the diet for over 6 months.
Dissenting opinion: Feelings only appear to emanate from thoughts, especially in the clinical counseling setting, where experience is artificially created and mere analogy to real life. Thoughts are as likely to emanate from feelings as vice versa. Clue: an infant without language for thought experiences feelings. You are probably right that binge behavior arises to manage unpleasant feelings and memories. CBT fails in real life because it does not engage at the source. CBT attempts to stifle feeling instead of integrating it, by telling more and more elaborate stories. It is precisely "beating down" your own physiology, even while you say that it isn't. Your physiology is your core intelligence, and it will not permit its cancelation. CBT, at best, will provide a weak and temporary placebo effect. This is what is measured in CBT clinical studies. The literature is rife with examples that show the effect is not a lasting one. People (the majority) who are denial oriented insist on taking this path. They are convinced that it is "change" when it is actually status quo. Sad that we just don't understand emotional life and emotional growth. Naming parts of the brain and giving them discrete functions, like parts in a machine is misleading. It's just embellishing a story that supports denial of emotional reality.

I then eliminated the seed oils and started on animal based diet..

@@T-aka-TCoffee is definitely not a necessity haha. Takes some adjusting to stop drinking it when you’re so used to it. Start by switching to decaf, then weaning yourself off entirely.
Why should we give up caffeinated beverages? Caffeine is the most benign drug there is. I love vodka, too but nothing could induce me to give up tea. Life wouldn’t be worth living without it.
You’ve left out one problem - in this cost of living crisis carbs are cheap.
For me, one meal a day carnivore is cheaper than my old eating habits. As Dr. Berry says, even if you eat crappy, cheap processed meats as your version of carnivore, it’s still 100x better for you than the standard diet. That said, you are absolutely right about cost - I’m scared that the price of meat is going to shoot up even higher. Good luck!

Actually, gram for gram, carby stuff costs more than meat, if you count nutrition + satiety versus empty calories + craving more.

I call poppycock on the cost. The most complete food is eggs, there is nothing wrong with an egg only diet to supply your nutrition.
Eggs, and whatever is on sale whether ground beef, canned sardines, sausage with a snall amount of low-carb veggie.

Thank you, this presentation was validating for me. I’ve been on my low carb journey earnestly for 5 years. I reversed T2D of 12 years and have kept it better controlled with this way of living than with any meds - by no means perfect though and that’s ok.
THIS IS how I changed and became so happy in my own skin at 58yo.
Now reaching 63 soon and the challenge for me is stepping from a wellness system like this talk describes into a sickness driven system to find new sources of person centred, wholistic science based support that engages my calm rational brain.
I was so even keeled (well, regulated and modulated in body mind and soul), feeling so well until covid met my type A personality and totally re-programmed my brain and body for a state of perpetual dysautonomia. I have the clinical knowledge I have the clinical techniques to manage my symptoms but that is not enough.
I was 40 plus years an occupational therapist specialist in sensory processing dysfunction. This is my thing. But my GP gaslights me so. So few functional docs here in NZ.

I am not capable of understanding why anyone would have difficulties sticking to the low carb ketogenic diet. Perhaps that's because I have NEVER liked sweet foods. In fact, as a child if I ate a sweet food, I would throw up. Besides the fact that I didn't like sweet foods, I had a bad reaction to them and so I've gotten along very well without them. And so all I had to do was eliminate the higher carb vegetables from my life. I do like vegetables but it was not difficult for me to do away with them as well. Nor do I like baked goods. So I found it very easy to stick to meat and very low carb vegetables for most of my life.
From the very first year of my adoption of the keto diet (about 35 years ago before it became all the rage) I lost 80 pounds (all I needed to lose)... 80 pounds of high carb vegetables, no doubt.
For 35 years I have never needed to see a doctor. My energy increased greatly on the keto diet and my mood is always positive. At age 73, I can still turn continuous cartwheels in my back yard with my grandchildren. And for 25 years, I have never had any health issues, not even a headache or a cold in the winter. So as I said, I am not capable of understanding why anyone would have any problem with the ketogenic diet when you can plainly see the benefits it provides.

I lost 18 kgs / 39 lbs doing no specific cardio ( NEAT... was my go-to form of moving more ) - weights and body weights ( because I have a desk bound job ) was my only form of specific exercise, and that was paired with OMAD.
When tracked - it comprised of 60% fat and 20% each from carbs and Protein.
Emergency or craving foods can be nuts with piece of sugar free chocolate and coffee with almond milk or coconut cream
I can go without bread for a day, maybe a week, ....a month? Fifty years.

Didn't find it difficult to go Keto except when eating out. Hard to get meals without carbs. Fortunately (or unfortunately) I don't eat out often, say twice a week. Bacon and eggs is often available, many places refuse just to cook a hamburger or a steak without the meal. Can order the meals and just not eat all the junk supplied with them (money isn't really the issue) but this isn't really satisfying as an approach.

Why do some people call eating low carb a "lifestyle"? I was happy with my lifestyle before going low carb, and have only changed the way I eat, not my lifestyle. It turns people off eating healthy low carb when they're told that eating better requires a lifestyle change. It makes it sound too difficult, when it isn't. Eating properly is not a "lifestyle".

Hello... I would have to say my life style has changed significantly since making a switch to low carb (& intermittent fasting - not mentioned in this talk). Some choices are not popular (I.e. my daughter likened it to social suicide) dining out at restaurants is no longer a preferred night as I find sifting through the menu a challenge. I now opt for healthy cafes serving brunch. The menu have simpler low carb options to choose from. Alcohol plays a minimal role now when socialising. Late nights are no longer preferred, as lack of good quality sleep bring about poor food choices. And the extra energy I've gained from eliminating carbs has gifted me the choice of many physical activities I want to engage in (and there are many on offer on the GC, Qld. So yes, I can say my lifestyle has changed... for the better 🙌
Eating is a PART of lifestyle, in a very regular partaking of! No-one has to change their whole lifestyle to become healthy, only the unhealthy aspects of it. If eating crappy food by choice got you here, then changing to eating healthy food by choice will get you where you need to be. Think of it as a whole/real food lifestyle/way of eating/living as opposed to a junk/carb/processed/convenient food lifestyle/way of eating/living. Our great grandparents had better lifestyles simply because there weren't convenience foods back then, and party foods were kept for parties. They may not have lived quite as long as people do now, but I'm certain that they were healthier for way longer than our current situation. I don't want to be kept alive by expensive meds that have frustrating and multiple side effects, when healthy eating will prove to be more beneficial for my body and my wallet in the long run.
Red meat helps me stay on the diet, among other things.

Seen my GP today, chol numbers all over the place, i asked what the lipid sub fraction looked like, he didn't know what i was talking about or referring too, gave me a script for fenobitrate and wasn't interested in anything i had to say or suggest.
Even after telling him i stopped my antidepressants and i feel better then i have in years.
Now my BP is through the roof and im ready to break shit.
Just worried about the numbers and giving scripts, and oh boy he didn't like when i said my mum (had seen this dr for many years) took all the meds he wanted and the specialist advice and still died at 69. Im so furious at this guy, even has a sign on the wall saying a good gp never stops learning.

That doctor needs to read that sign every day and take it to heart, but he clearly never will. Best to find a new one, IMHO.
Does he take your blood pressure two or three times in the visit. Usually the third reading is more accurate as you have time to relax. Also, you can get a blood pressure monitor to wear for a week to get more accurate readings.

I’m curious why some people insist on keeping to keto/carnivore on holidays? Is eating carbs 2 days out of the year going to ruin your life?
For some people, if they eat sugary processed food, or even sweet keto food, they go off the rails and it snowballs into days…weeks…whatever, and they gain weight. Not eating the trigger foods keeps them on track.
Why eat junk on holidays when you would prefer good food?
Would depend on the addiction and for some it’s more comfortable just staying in ketosis.

I have been Low carb for 10 weeks. So boring. We nedketo recipes for steak sauces that are simple and do not require fresh herbs and ingredients we do not have- ex. truffle salt, for example so this video does not give me what i want.
