    2:19 Writing marketing materials is something I'd not heard before, but I see how this can work, can be a meter. Brilliant idea.
    10:04 Creating a book outline _after_ completing the first draft is also quite clever. I'm a pantser who follows a lengthy synopsis, so I've never properly outlined a story, much less a book. Mapping the plot with an outline will now be my first step, a post-draft, pre-revisions intermediary. What a simple yet effective way to recognize and correct plot holes, dangling threads or characters, sloppy transitions, and more. Again, brilliant.

    Being told it is better to have less words than too many words was important to hear. I was worried I was hakcing my book to pieces, but it seems I am on the correct path removing words like "then, just, that, etc"

    Hi Mollie, so glad you are back! Since having a child, I've had to stop taking classes but much of what I took was geared to literature in general and not writing or editing. Do you have recommendations for online classes that might help with writing and editing? Maybe online certificates?

    • @MollieMohrTurbeville
      @MollieMohrTurbeville  3 года назад +1

      Hey Merideth! It's so good to hear from you! I totally get having to put classes on pause after having a child. I recommend the University of Chicago Graham School's editing certification program, but it's definitely not cheap and it's pretty rigorous. You can take one class at a time depending on what you're looking for through most editing groups and associations through. The Editorial Freelancers Association is a great place to start! I talk about training and credentials in lesson 1 of my e-course, but I also talk about it in my RUclips videos (I think the How to Become an Editor video). Hope that helps!!

      @@MollieMohrTurbeville Thanks Mollie! Would your e-course be a place to start if I have no experience?

    • @MollieMohrTurbeville
      @MollieMohrTurbeville  3 года назад +1

      @@MKReads It would be a great place to start, as long as you're serious about creating an editorial business. I think some writers out there may be interested in editing, but if they aren't ready to take the leap yet, I wouldn't recommend my course. Now, there may be a bit of a learning curve (lots of CMOS talk), but it's definitely created primarily for newbie/aspiring editors. It doesn't cover technical editing skills like a certification program would, but it does provide tools/resources to help you create a training path for yourself (lots of templates you can implement into your business and guides to learn from). It would be supplemental to a grammar course, for instance, but it's NOT a grammar course. Hope that makes sense! If you're not sure if it's right for you, I have a Q&A highlight on my instagram (@molliereads) that may answer some of your questions! :)

      @@MollieMohrTurbeville Hey Mollie, sorry it took me so long to reply. Yes, that makes sense. The program I am in only had one grammar course and the rest of the courses have been literature related. They haven't offered the advanced grammar course in a while.

    Here is my pitch: Have you ever wanted to rule a country? What about a country with dragons, dark mages, and war at each boarder? What about a country with vast wealth inequalities per region? Have you ever wanted to be a King of a land like this? If not, you and Gordon may have more in common than you think.

    Fellow writers, there is just one good piece of advice in this video. Go to 10:00 and listen to Tip number one which is to write a summary of each chapter and analyze it for story flow and story value.

      Sure. Tiger Woods never looks at how others play golf. Designers at Ford never look at Toyotas. And you never look at others making foolish RUclips comments.

      I have read all sorts of books and seeing the different quality, sometimes even bad books that had good sales, gives me some confidence. Also helps me to decide what I want on the cover.
