The reason cheap zinc-carbon cells leak when spent or old is because the zinc casing of the cell is also the electrode. As the cell delivers current, the zinc metal is consumed from within (converted to zinc chloride), so the casing becomes thinner until a weak point is formed and the electrolyte leaks out. The "heavy duty" types have an extra layer of steel surrounding the zinc casing, which doesn't get consumed and therefore reduces the risk of leakage. However, the steel layer can rust from the outside, so the heavy duty cells can still leak eventually - it just takes longer.
The main reason why zinc-carbon cells still exist is because they are extremely cheap to make. Plus of course they are relatively safe even when they do leak, since the electrolyte is ammonium chloride or zinc chloride, or a mixture of both. Alkaline batteries use potassium hydroxide (KOH) as the electrolyte, which is much more corrosive and hence far more dangerous if it leaks out. If it is a slow leak and exposed to the air, then the KOH absorbs carbon dioxide to form potassium carbonate, which has a tendency to form fluffy white crystals around the leakage site.

Each Kodak alkaline battery has about three times the life of the zinc battery of the same size. If you go to the web site you can download the datasheet for each type of Kodak battery. They state the capacity with a common load and consider them flat at 0.8V.
And many Alkaline batteries are inferior to zinc at low load, so powering a clock for example makes them flat sooner than the zinc. If I put a Kodak alkaline battery in the clock in my bathroom it will last about three to four months, but one of the zinc batteries lasts over a year. Put them in my torch and it's a different story of course, with the alkaline lasting about three times as long.

    • @andygozzo72
      @andygozzo72 6 лет назад +1

She's noticed these lights shut themselves off automatically after around 6 hours if you leave them on . (To switch them back on you've got to switch them off and on again) . A bit irritating for people who like to leave them on al the time!

    Question for the Clive-ster:
I just added a string of LED christmas lights to a pre-existing setup on my porch. (Two actually, but only one of them is chained to another.) The setup goes like this... One 20ft strip of 100x colored LEDs, that a separate 10ft strip of 50x white LEDs are chained to the end of. (By chained, I just mean, plugged into the socket on the end of the strip.) Just the first half of white LED strip is dim.
Now, I could maybe answer my question without asking if I were to be so foolish as to spend the time I'm taking writing this comment to, instead, run an extension cord out to the white LEDs, connect them directly to the mains, and see if they all lit at equal brightness. But where's the fun in that?
Now, the 10 ft strip of white LEDs is clearly made of two 5ft strips that are joined within an inline plastic cap at the factory. The same appears to be true of the 20 ft strip of colored LEDs, except (again, I can't be bothered to actually look or anything) if I remember right, they were split in half as well -- not at the 25 LED / 5 ft mark, but at the 10ft / 50 LED mark. So, noting that I'm in America and this is 110-120V service, my guesses are as follows: Since these are AC, LED string lights in 3-wire strings... The AC is delivered to the end of the string, and it's female socket first, then returns through the LEDs? The various sections of each string that have been joined are operating in parallel, within the larger series?
And the reason the first half of the last string in the line (of just 2 strings in the circuit) is only putting out half-brightness is: It's receiving the current last, after the AC goes to the far end; and the resistive load used on the colored LEDs - operating at half the wattage per LED of the whites - doesn't leave enough juice for the last parallel string in the series to light at full-intensity?
Either that logic chain makes some degree of sense, or you can see now why I asked.
In both cases, I'm very confused.

There have been several fatalities from cheap chargers causing electrocution via earphones. You can buy safe chargers from prominent shops like ASDA or IKEA in the UK and Walmart in America. They have to comply with higher electrical standards. I don't actually recommend ever using earphones while a phone is charging from a plug-in USB charger. A battery power bank is OK though.

Anything that uses an ultra low draw, and sits a lot. Remotes, smoke detectors (The ones I've taken apart actually specify battery part numbers, and they're all 'super heavy duty'), _not_ radios, clocks are okay, but alkaline are fine as well in clocks. I use them in single LED christmas style hanging 'things', where the batteries will be thrown away after they are taken down. I also use the 9v in my multi-meters, where they tend to last two to three years with no problems. I think I have one at least 5 years old with the original 9v.

    • @stonedsavage7814

@@tbelding for alot of clocks the slightly higher voltage in these cells makes them run slightly faster until they reach 1.5 to 1.4 volts. This would be more evident in leds as they start off super bright then to their normal brightness and down.

The problem with zinc chloride batteries is that the anode is also the container for all the chemicals that make the battery go. As you discharge one, the container slowly gets eaten away. I think the only reason they’re sold is that they are dirt cheap to produce.

Hi, with regard to the zinc batteries Vs alkaline batteries,
Zinc batteries are much budget friendly, as we can get more number of batteries for a lesser price.
Secondly, zinc batteries, by the virtue of their lower price are useful for low current applications like kid's toys and wall clocks, where purchasing alkaline BATTERIES may not be cost effective.
Last but not the least, they can be provided as complementary batteries when we purchase some appliances like small flashlights, toys, etc.
