I keep seeing comments that the video is confusing to non-fans of Yu-Gi-Oh (damn...) so here's a little dictionary of Yu-Gi-Oh terms to try and help:
The anime series in order are: Yu-Gi-Oh, GX, 5D's, Zexal, Arc-V, and VRAINS. There's also the new show Yu-Gi-Oh Sevens, which is not relevant to the topic at hand.
Archetype: a group of cards that share a particular name that support one another and synergize together
Turbo: A deck that's specifically designed to play a particular card much faster than the card was intended.
Backrow: The zones of the field where spells and traps are played.
Protection: effects that prevent your cards from being destroyed
Search/Searcher: cards that let you select and retrieve specific cards out of your deck
Beater/Beatstick: a monster with high Attack Points that doesn't do much else relevant.
Boss: an extremely powerful monster that decks are typically built around
Swarming: a deck's ability to play several monsters to the field in rapid succession
Brick: when your hand sucks so bad you have no good moves available
One Turn Kill/OTK: a combo that deals an immense amount of damage sufficient to defeat an enemy that's still at high life points.
Control: A deck or combo that's designed to restrict your opponent's moves.
Consistency: a deck's ability to make good moves regardless of the cards drawn

FTK (First Turn Kill); OP decks that focus on downing the opponent on the first turn.

@Casswury I've seen that; it was pretty fun. And I also always laugh at the film's implicit admission that Jaden's deck is useless, because the implication is that Jaden's hand completely bricked and he was only able to play because Yusei went first and they invented a new Neos Fusion specifically for the film.

If you want a challenge try ranked marches. The 3 minute time limit really hurts a lot of the turbo OTK decks. It forces them to break up their combos over several turns, which forces them to adjust their combos so they don't get run over by their opponent.
That 32 deck limit... It hurts so badly. It was my biggest issue with the previous game.
Story doesn't do the anime justice. They gimped it to sell DLC in the previous game, which was a bit overpriced. It really could have been done better, but Konami as a corporation is lazy.
Have to agree the AI isn't the worst though not the best either. I've seen some really bad plays from the VRains Decks, but not nearly as bad as some of the older titles. The AI's for the Xbox 360 games, and the one DS game I had were actually merciless, and brutal 90% of the time.
The actual Card game seems like a mess, though not as bad as the Goat format days, or the TeleDAD days of 5D's. Top tier decks I've heard about are Eldlitch which is a Zombie deck that uses traps and locks down your opponent, Adamspater which is Rock based combo heavy deck, Sky Strikers(is in this game, and has been nerfed multiple times in the actual game, but is still good) revolves around controlling only 1 monster in the extra monster zone and having powerful spells which are easily searched.) Salamangreats(also in this game) which were actually released in a structure deck, and actually won a major tournament or two. There's a few other that I can't remember or I don't know much about such as Altergiest but the Meta is built up on turbo decks, and control decks.
The following relates both to the actual game and Link Evolution.
Hand traps such as Ash Blossom, Effect Veiler, Infinite Impermanence, Nibeiru, etc allow Decks that go 2nd to survive the first turn if the duel by interfering with the opponent, while decks that go first have to play around those cards in order to flood the field. There's a Nekroz Deck that with 1 specific card in hand can combo into 6 monsters in 1 turn lock your opponent out of special summoning, shut down all extra deck monsters, and search 3-4 cards out of the deck, and draw one. The 3-4 cards, and the 1 draw are all a bonus as they aren't needed to set the field up(your just required to do them in order to pull of the combo, though some of the searches are optional.) Hero decks can pull similar shenanigans with 5 big monsters in 1 turn, and that's from nearly any hand. Both decks need 5+ minutes to run these combos though so time limits can break them.
Don thousand cards were printed after the mega patch and.... they're able to OTK, or lock down the opponent if they get their field spell which is easily searched through a number of ways.

This is the game that I have played the most on Switch. Over 400 hours, I made so many decks and played so many games. I still haven't got all the cards and I still can make some more decks I would like but many some cards are so rare drops that it is almost impossible to do it.
So IF you are a fan of Yugioh OR you just have a curiosity to see how the game is played you HAVE to buy it. Seriously. The story eases you with all the differen mechanics. The game is perfect and the only bad thing is of course that new cards will not be added but it does make sense.

I took my IRL Simochi-stall to an actual tournament, and the regular ULTRA-LEGIT META GAMER GOD dude saw me playing and asked if he could try my deck. He was having a blast. It wasn't _amazing,_ but it was funny as hell.

Just bringing this up pendulum weren't as broke as you said it was. took them a good few years to become a viable and even broken deck. They still got there but not as fast as you made it seem. Also if you XYZ summon using a pendulum monster it goes to the grave one of the few ways you can get them to the grave without discarding them from hand.
Also D/D/D dont really like to pendulum summon much they can do it but its more effective to use all the other summoning methods they have.
    Great review though

It was the deck that got me back into Yu-gi-oh and I use it more than any other deck.

1:17 I actually have a similar story. I was playing Legacy of the Duelist Link Evolution and playing the reverse duel of Blair vs Chazz. For the record, I was playing Artifacts, an archetype based around monsters that could set in the spell and trap zones and gain effects if they're summoned on the opponent's turn. We were caught in a complete stalemate. Chazz had 2, later 3 Ojama Knights in defense position and I had Artifacts Vajra, Beagalltach, and the Seal of Orichalcos on the field so I can't summon anything stronger from the Extra deck. Chazz had Ojama Country which can switch the ATT and DEF of all monsters on the field but he never once activated it. He had the opportunity to turn the duel in his favor and he never took it. We were stalemated until he eventually ran out of draws.

Just putting this out there, but Master Rule 4 absolutely wasn't meant to slow the game down. It was created purely to push Link monsters in lieu of just releasing a ban list to rape all the top decks at the time, like what happened when Konami of America wanted to push Kozmos by murdering Nekroz, Burning Abyss, and Shaddolls in one fell swoop.
Under MR4 Links basically did what ALL the previous Extra Deck types did before it, only harder and far more viciously considering Links are so god damn easy to summon. They powercrept themselves practically every pack, and became even more toxic than the summoning mechanics they were "supposed" to limit.

My cut off was basically the same as you, 2010, and every time I try to peer back in, it's so overwhelming. Yu-Gi-Oh is very intimidating to get back into because the meta changes every five seconds and new mechanics and cards become too much to keep up with so if I'm going back to the game, it is video games.

Same here. It was just around the time synchros were becoming really popular. I didn't like synchros because summoning them felt so lazy and unearned somehow (compared to fusion summoning where you still had to use specific monsters AND have polymerization back in the day; WHY do a bug and a dragon combine to make a machine, for example?!) but I could still have fun casual games against people who ran synchros. My biggest problem with YuGiOh since then is the never-ending power creep, basically Konami printing stronger and better cards so people would have to use these stronger and better cards. I liked the slow, methodical YuGiOh. I can still remember trying to revisit the game through YGO Pro or what's-it-called in 2015 or so and playing against Blackwings that performed well over 15 special summons on their first turn. And I just sat there... From what I hear, the game only got faster since then.

I don't really know how this ended up in my recommended, but I liked the review! I personally own the game myself and I had a lot of fun trying to beat every mission with story decks. Of course some of the later ones proved to be a hassle, so I just beat them with my Odd-Eyes Deck (which somehow always gets a good hand to finish them off in 2-3 turns, despite being the worst deck I've ever built).
Overall I really liked the game and I have like, 150 hours on it already. I like how knowledgeable you were, even if you fumbled a bit on the Pendulums part. They were never good and are dangerously resource intensive. I'm not sure a meta deck from 2004 would lose to a 2015 Pendulum deck.

Pendulum decks have had meta relevant decks, it just that most of them are now unplayable due to multiple hits on the ban list. Most of them also came out long after pendulum summoning was introduced to the game.
Dark hole was competitive until 2014 when Raigeki was put to one, and it was still a cheaper alternative for a while after. Both Raigeki and Dark Hole fell off around 2017, and Lightning Storm, a newer spell, replaces them both because it's not just limited to monsters.

After finishing the story mode and challenge modes I was left with not much to do except collect cards, thankfully I’ve found a great use for it now that I’ve collected everything: Playing Solitaire! No really, whenever there’s an Archetype I’m interested in but don’t know what cards to use in it I make the deck in Legacy and test consistency in random story duels. Sure I could just do test hands by myself in a vacuum but I feel it’s better to test with at least the minimum level of disruption from the other side. The most recent deck I’ve made using this method are Karakuris, feudal Japanese wood robots with a special gimmick involving their monsters changing their battle positions, they’re not great but they’ve been a blast to play, just waiting on the last 3 cards to arrive in the mail and I’ll have the deck built for real. Which leads me to a question:
Would you be interested in having a duel or 2 over Legacy? If you’re not busy I mean, if you don’t have the time it’s perfectly understandable :)

Oh god I know exactly how you feel. I've quit this game three times. The first time was around the age of the Elemental Heroes. I saw that they were all practically useless unless you had _all_ of them and red flags went off. Then the Destiny Heroes. Then the Inzectors. I saw the writing on the wall and quit. Up to that point, I had gotten no less than 4th in the past 10 tournaments I was in, and won 2 of them. Balanced Warrior deck that somehow only I knew how to use.
_FUCK_ Inzectors, by the way. Especially Hornet. I got Hornet in a pack once. *I ate it.*
I got dragged back into it a few years later, and tried using my previous deck to see how it would do. I was thrashed so hard that I spent an unreasonable amount of time and money making a new deck from scratch. Which turned out to be a modified Simochi Burn. Did okay for a while, had to quit again because car.
Came back two months later. There was this stupid-broken sea monster everyone was using, but you at least had a _chance_ of winning.
    Then came the Wind-Ups.
I was humiliated. This no longer had anything to do with skill. The deck played itself, you just had to buy it. I asked the next guy what his deck was, and when he said "Wind-Ups," I tried to forfeit immediately. But he convinced me to stay. This was a mistake.
He made *_thirteen summons_* on his first turn and left me with *_one_* card in my hand before I had a chance to do *_anything._*
I haven't played the game since.

Man, don't get me started on pendulums. I was getting into competitive yugioh at the time they were first released, and what you said about them was exactly how I felt way back then. While there were competitive decks that didnt use them, it felt like if you didn't use a pendulum deck, you were in for a much harder fight. Nothing was more annoying when you expended most of your resources only for your opponent to just activate two scales, pendulum summon 5 from the extra deck and just end the duel right there. And the meta at the time made me quit the competitive scene till around early 2019. Still play competitively to this day.

1)Getting cards from the booster packs is infuriatingly random, with full completing the 10k total a massive time sink since it requires the duel points from duels to "purchase". I get what they were going for, but after a while it loses novelty.
2)Terribad decks or not, the ai can be extremely brutal, and very stacked in their favor. This only gets worse when they get their digital mitts on more modern cards.
3)Unskippable summoning scenes. And no way to see the ones available on their own.

I have an easy way to stop FTKOs, make it so no player takes battle or effect damage turn 1

The decks that will attempt those FTKs or OTKs will have at least a dozen ways to prevent your attempts to survive.

If you haven't checked out Arc-V I'd recommend it. It's kinda BS at times but it does get pretty good up until the final few duels.

Ditto for Vrains. It doesn't know how to treat its side characters and ended too soon, but it's still worth at least a watch.

4:18 Is it just me or are all of the protag decks pointless because they can't rig their draws... *Like in the anime*?

Meanwhile actually good archetypes like Altergeist are poorly used in the anime

What's funny about Jaden's Deck is that his Neos Deck went undefeated the entire series x3 minus one Duel in Season 4 where Chazz throws the match at the suggestion of an antagonistic manager.

I'm told that actually impacts the online multiplayer: real world meta decks take so damn long to do regular moves that nobody uses them!
