Love you & your tutorials Oliver. I'm new to macro photography and I have just finished collecting dandelion clocks and bought some extension tubes for my Dslr. I honestly cannot wait to give this a go. You explain everything in such detail, you don't make us amateurs feel like we're stupid. Keep up your good work Oliver, you're a ⭐. Looking forward to more tutorials.
This is such a lovely feedback - thank you very much Elaine. I'm very glad I managed to inspire you and you will experience that macro photography is not only addictive, but the results will roll in very quick. I wish you all the best for your macro-journey!
Great, smoothly explained without big words or complicated situations. The used items are also easy to find for everyone. Thank you, you make photographic art works accessible.
Such a wonderful feedback, thank you very much Roy! The entire idea was to show that macro photography can be done easily and I wanted to inspire people to try it themselfes. I hope that worked on you.
This is absolutely brilliant and the pictures are lush. I’ve just got my first macro lens, and had stumbled upon your glowing mushroom video. I’m really keen to try out some different more creative type things like this. Really good tutorial video and glad I found your channel.
Thank you Gerd. The torch is just a cheap LED light that came as an extra with an Amazon order. It doesn’t have a model number on it. But I'd say anything in the 10 to 15 EUR price range should do the job.
Another cool video Oliver!! I never would have thought to use crumpled up aluminum foil as a backdrop - and I loved the Boke effect it made in your image!! I have to try that!!!! Thanks so much for the video!!
Another brilliant video. Thank you for showing us your process and giving so many tips, I’m going to have a go at something similar. You definitely have a new fan and subscriber ☺️
Thank you very much for your nice words Sarah. The aperture varies in the full range of f/2.8 to f/16. It all depends on the magnification factor of the scene (how close am I getting the lens to my subject) and whether I want as much in focus as possible or if I decide to use out of focus elements in the scene. For example, the Dandelion seeds are mostly shot with f/14 and the spring at the end only with f/4.5. Now that might not be the information you were hoping for but when you play around with different apertures, you will quickly get a feeling for how it affects the image.
I have tried taking water drops on dandelion clocks before, but have never been able to get the reflections as clear as you have shown here.Is the answer the reflective background? I have only used non reflective backgrounds before.
Hi Mark, illumination is key for this type of work. If you want the droplets and a reflection in them crisp and clear, then the backdrop plays a crucial role indeed. Avoid direct light on the droplet and illuminate the backdrop directly. Also make sure you got the focus correct. I often miss it when I'm a bit sloppy and the results are ruined.
I'm so pleased I found your channel. So many great ideas and information, thank you. I'm curious about the way you have your images on the wall. Are they just in mounts?
Thank you so much for your kind words Jon. It is much appreciated! The prints in the background are indeed mounted only. Initially it was meant to be a temporary solution - but as we know, nothing lasts as long as the temp ones ;)
Hello Oliver, excellent tutorial! I learned a lot. Thank you. What's the name of those short alligator clips with the block that you submerged in the water?
Thanks a lot for your nice feedback Douglas. The little helpers are memo clip holders, I use these: geni.us/BzRnYNh. You can found more in the description to the video. I hope that helps.
Thanks a lot Vijay. Unfortunately I can't name a brand or model number. It is simply an LED light, that was an extra when I bought some batteries on Amazon. I'm really sorry mate.
Einfache Knetmasse koennte ebenfalls funktoinieren...
I'm thinking the spring with flowers in the water drops..... perfect for a "SPRING" theme. (When you sell that print for a calendar or something you can PAYPAL me my cut...)
To be honest, I left it in Auto WB and made modifications in Post, when necessary. In your case you should set it according to the light source you will be using. With such an LED torch, the "Flash" setting might be the closest. Alternatively, when the colour temperature of the torch is known, then dial it in directly to that. I hope that helps 😉
I use low fat, long life milk because I don't want the liquid to be reflective from the fat. There is no fixed ratio and I just add enough milk to the water that I can't see below the surface.
