Q of the Day: At one point, I had well over 150 figmas. However, by 2019, the prices were going up, QC was declining overall, and the character selection was skewing heavily towards mobile phone games, virtual You Tubers, the “High School Girls with Heavy Artillery” trope, and other areas of Japanese pop culture that I wasn’t interested in. Circa 2015-2018, I was averaging two or three figmas a month. Now I probably average one or two figmas a year. SHF has become the line I was hoping figma would go back to being in terms of churning out anime and video game characters.
Figmas are the living fossils of the action figure industry. Their articulation has barely evolved since their beginnings but they are second to none in likeness for anime action figures (specially girls). Luckily, S.H.Figuarts are getting more licenses and they have improved their sculpts tons since they started so we now have options.
I really want the upcoming Ganondof figure, wondering if I should keep the pre order or not.

@@soumyadeepbanerjee964 that one at least seems to have double jointed elbows and some kind of diaphragm joint. It seems they are willing to add more articulation to the bulkier figures although I doubt they are using barbell joints instead of the ball hinges they love so much.
Figma’s engineering has actually regressed when it comes to diapers. Honestly it wouldn’t be a problem if they didn’t have some of the highest prices in the industry…
Good Smile doesn’t seem to care that much about figma these days. New releases are getting fewer and further between. It’s all about Nendoroids, Pop Up Parade, and scale figures now.
To answer the question of the day: I generally like figma and do have a good amount of them. But i kinda only buy the characters i really want. When it comes to goodsmile, i focus more on their model kit lines, those are generally great lol. moderoid, Chitocerium and Guilty Princess kits are all worth checking out For me, figma is a good line but a lot of the time they feel a bit too expensive for what they are, especially since I it feels like they seem to come with less accessories, and if they do come with a lot, it's usually for a DX version, like the recent Figma Arcrueid from Tsukihime/Melty Blood or the Lancer saber DX, you get the most out of them if you get the DX one. Pretty sure it'll be the same case for the new link I reviewed the dread samus and guyver 2.0 and man those gave dome of their best articulation ever, and then they release stuff that's super basic, it's really inconsistent But yeah overall they're not a bad line but i generally only collect the characters i want and they grab a lot of licenses that I'm into so i kinda just gravitate to them because of that. I do wish they'd advance their articulation and be more on par with figuarts and revoltech My favorite figmas at the moment are in no real order Samus Dread Guyver 2.0 Raidou Kuzunoha Demi fiend Mio from Xenoblade 3 Arcueid from Tsukihime Nanoha Excelion Mode Sophia F Shirring bikini armor
I went and grabbed it! I grew up watching the original Dragon Quest anime back in the 90s, so I have been eyeing this figure for a while. The price kept me away from purchasing....until now. I'm glad you reviewed it; your insight always helps a lot.
There are 1/12 scale figures of the Smash Bros Heroes made by Bring Arts, namely The Luminary (the one that looks like Android 17) and Erdrick (the one that looks like Gohan) The catch is, of course, Bring Arts lmao
I don't have any loyalty to a particular brand nor do I collect everything from a particular brand. With that being said, Figma does have the best sculpt for Anime characters (even the scaling for characters in the same series are spot on from experience). They do have their limitations in articulation and the engineering of the figures. So if you prefer the looks with occassional posing, I think Figma is good.
That effect is awesome they really should include it with more releases or variations of it awesome video Anthony always love watching them even if it's something we don't collect😉👍
Thank you for reviewing this, Anthony! I have only played a tiny bit of one Dragon Quest game, so for me, it's not even the IP. It's just a gorgeous figure and a gorgeous effect piece with it! Got it on the same sale as you (thank you for the link). Were it not for you, I would have missed out on it!
See I'm kind of in the middle when it comes to figma. I bought Goblin Slayer, Aqua, & Pop (Dragon Quest). The hands tend to never stay on and the joint sometimes feel way too loose. Usually I like it overall
I have a some figmas like the AOT figures, skyward sword Link, dread samus, the bloodborne hunter, and soon this one. Your review along with the half off discount sold me on it. Thanks for the review
I'm 50/50 on figma. I really like how premium their figures are. A lot of figure companies are getting cheap on the aesthetic with lots of cheap bare plastic, no shading, shiny figures, sloppy paintwork so these figures look premium. They have also been improving articulation on some figures but a lot of their figures are just outdated and overpriced.
Figma i think makes quite adequate and nice figures. Over 100? Not sure... Better than many of the medium mafex figures. At a discount like this one its quite a steal imo.
I only get figmas when i'm intrested in the character (i can say the exact same thing about every other company, tho). I recently got Lucina from Fire Emblem and want to get the Zelda figures coming out next year.
Sometimes I prefer figma much more than S.H. (specially the video game ones). And they've been improving themselves, so, I'm still hooked for their Berserk line, if they are going to reassure some of them
To answer question of the day, I am the „normal” figma collector. I get whatever it seems fine to me and ignore what I dislike. There are some figma figures that I really wanted to get but avoided because they just doesn’t work in figma style, also some of their nwe figured articulation not only is old and should improve, some even get worse (Marevl Legends style ab crunch)! The only figma I want now is Goblin Slayer because no one else made him and he was really fine figure. GoodSmileCompany didn’t reissue him when another seasons were airing, like what gives! Now I have to pray someone will sell him in the next couple of years without price tag that will destroy my wallet.
I generally really like figma for their super accurate and "on model" looking figures, but the articulation has gotten really weird and inconsistent in recent years. For the longest time they were kinda limited, but at least you knew what to expect. Now they're all over the place. Some figures still keep true to that old design philosophy. But they're also trying new stuff to various degrees of success. Dread Samus and the Fluted Armor from Demon's Souls are really great, but then you get stuff like the CSM figures with super jank and ugly shoulders and torsos that would've been much better off if they had stuck to what they know. Kinda like the One Piece SHF line in a way. Doing too much with mixed results
Damn! You are bringing the heavy hitters. First myth cloth ex now dragon quest. The anime remake already ended and is on dvd dubbed in English already 😝
I love this effect part, but mine came out the box with some weird ass cheap plastic smell =( It smells up any display case I put it in, maybe I should wash it off or something?
I have no hate for Figma nor an outstanding love. In the past few years, I do feel like they've been trending mediocre (especially for the price) more often than not, but since they seem to be reviewed far less often (especially by actual critical reviewers) than, say, Figuarts, it's not really something that is widely known or acknowledged. They still have their occasional standout figures, especially when they use "custom joints" rather their usual bulbous disc tumor joints that they're known for, and I will still pick those up, especially if they're characters or from IPs I really like, but I pick up Figma far less often than I used to, especially when other companies offer the same character. They also seem to weirdly be going backwards in terms of engineering lately, with Marvel Legends ab crunches and these weird oldschool knee and elbow joints that are just half of the upper arm clicking into the other half of the lower arm. Not fond of like the slit cuts in soft rubbery pieces mainly in the shoulders and crotch either. They look weird, don't afford much and they look like they'll tear. They also cut a big slit into the back of the figure quite often now, similar to the Figuarts Nami.
I think even if the articulation quality of figma is lacking for some of their universal joints, there are few officially licensed 1/12 scale figure companies who can produce such good looking almost fully painted and faithfully sculpted, detailed, and finished figures; Bar some exceptions we've seen throughout the years. Definitely not nearly as affordable as something like figuarts or a domestic brand like jada, but there are no figmas in my collection that I could think of that look or feel like a plastic-y toy. Early day figuarts had paint, finishes, and shading but even then they were heavy handed with shading and were lacking in their sculpts.
Crappy Square Enix Bring Arts has the DQXI Hero for your Smash collection. They also have the DQ3 Hero too if you want one of the alt skin for Hero. I used to be exclusively collect Goodsmile Figmas and Nendos until a little over a year ago. It was much easier on my wallet 😅
Anthony, I wanna know if you'd like to review a figure I bought on bbts, I don't know anything about Kamen Rider so the title of the figure is "Kamen Rider S.H.Figuarts - Shinkocchou Seihou - Kamen Rider Den-O (Rod Form & Ax Form) Exclusive Action Figure" I got them just because I just think they look amazing lol
I was a fan, but as the years go by I resent Figma because GSC doesn't deserve many of the licenses they've taken hostage. Not only does their output underutilize the IPs, almost all are comically overpriced and with that in mind, their engineering is often antiquated and questionable, the paint apps are pathetic (the anime-style figures frequently only have clean base coats and nothing else; no panel lines, volumetric shading, dry brushing or edge highlights etc etc, nadda), and even their aesthetics aren't that great - they go for cutesy and bubbly even when characters should have sharper, more defined features or more voluptuous or muscular physiques. Jeanne Alter is my favorite character in all of fiction but half the time I look at the Figma on my display, I almost want to smash it with a hammer because the likeness is bad and it's a weak product in general. Same thing with their Arcueid Brunestud. If I'm buying a Figma, it's because it's my only option, not because they actually made something great like Jada; and almost always I'll wait for a sale first. Being a fan of those licenses is like being a kaiju collector except a Hiya alternative isn't there to save you from the garbage SHMA. In fact, I only ever intend to do two RUclips toy reviews in my whole life, but my dislike for this line is so strong that I'm tempted to make a third one about the Figma Arcueid just because it's so atrocious - and not only is Arcueid one of my favorite characters in all of fiction but I've also waited more than a decade for a plastic representation of the character, so it says *tons* that even my bias isn't enough to overlook what a terrible job GSC did. Even this one doesn't look anywere near worth the full price.
Gonna need a “Full splits. No nuggets.” shirt now.

Got Dai last year along with Popp and Flazzard. I like them enough but I would've loved to have gotten a Hyunckel figure.
I remember seeing him on jump Force they should bring that game back
