As someone who had collected hundreds of Star wars toys and even marvel since childhood, the quality of today's figures doesn't compare to the ones before.
The figures back then are very articulated when it comes to their joints and movement, which made them super fun to play with. Now figures today just lacked that flair. Also the materials that made up the figurines back then felt that it had more quality compared to the new toys today. I know they're just plastics, but as a collector there really is a degrade of quality. I don't really know how to explain it clearly, but yeah. "How the toy companies stay afloat is beyond me."
They aren't, Hasbro is in SERIOUS trouble... WOTC (Magic cards + D&D) is keeping everything else alive, & THOSE brands also have their own issues with woke agenda pushing & customer alienation. But the thing is it takes a big corp a long time to actually die because of all the invested capital. See the state of General Motors a few decades ago before they bailed that firm out.
"There's not enough adult toy collectors to help them turn a profit."
The collectors also don't want a lot of this stuff, because surprisingly enough nostalgic adults aren't that inclined to buy new characters pushing new toxic politics. The real surprise if anything though is that the retro-bait doesn't sell that well... though I would hazard a guess that the 80s-90s replica toys just intrinsically don't have the same value as the original product from the 80s-90s.

I would never want someone to give me something from Black Panther Wakanda forever. I'd rather a barbie and an optimus prime

I love searching Ollie's, for the same stuff over and over again! All kidding aside, I do wish my local Ollie's had the Royal Guard and Toe Fighter Carbonized set. I'd get two.

The star wars stuff cracks me up. I worked in a Target in the toy department when the new movies came out and I remember getting boxes and boxes and boxes of these star wars black series figures and then they just didnt sell. And they went on sale and still didnt sell. And eventually we loaded an entire pallet up with these things and put them on a truck that took them away. Disney was so damn sure people would love these lol

Not gonna lie. For $4.99 I’d buy a Sheri copter or 2. Would be great to cut up and distress, throw on a thin bit of wood with some oval glue and sand. Quick respray and boom! Crashed spaceship wreckage for warhammer.

Hasbro has course corrected by dramatically scaling down order numbers and offloading toy licenses to other toy makers but it'll be a couple years before it reflects the state of ollies.

Do kids still play with toys? I thought parents just gave them iPads and stuck them on the couch? And that's why more adults buy toys for themselves than for kids.

      Kids still do
I work at a toy store and we have a ton of little kids come in every day, and Spider-Man and Darth Vader toys are some of our hottest christmas gifts this year (they sold out within a week, and the only other toy that sold out within a week this holiday season so far was a "mama suprise" toy bunny rabbit)

You know something is not selling when Ollie's puts it on clearance.

It's kind of funny. many kids i witnessed recently seem to be getting interested in toys/things that were popular ,back from when i was a kid. For example, the model railroading hobby. I went to a train show recently and i heard kids saying that building model railroad layouts are more fun because they keep occupied w/ building/making stuff for layouts ,all the while running their favorite trains. One kid even said it's better than sitting around a pc or a VR headset all day. I think this is a sign of an awakening for kids, lol.
