This actually isn't likely a Disney decision. This is the toy manufacturer who leased the toy rights from Disney. But I do think the people who making these decisions have no children. Or if they do, they don't allow their kids to "play". And yeah, considering the sizes and character selections of these toys, I suspect the decision making is mostly by women who have no idea how boys play and assume they play like girls.
@@superdave8248 I don't think it was kids they were targeting with this shit. I think they were hoping man-children with gobs of money would buy this stuff... and that promptly failed.
@@ImpetuouslyInsane That is indeed the case with "The Black" Series. They are indeed targeting adult collectors. But everything else, is absolutely targeted towards kids. Back in the days of my youth, toy companies would run tests with children. To see how they played with them and get their general opinion of a potential toy line. These days, I don't really think they test anything any more. They make a mold, find the cheapest way to produce it, and follow the idea that if they make it, people will buy it.
I grew up in the 80s and 90s. A good reason why kids now a days don't play with many action figures is that they're watching commercial free streaming sites instead of mainstream TV. I remember all those toy commercials these big corporations shoved in our faces every time my brother and I tried watching our favorite cartoons. If companies want to sell toys, they need to figure out what the majority of kids are playing / watching on the internet. And stop the overproduction of garbage they think will sell because of a diversity quota. It's bad for the environment... You know all this plastic chemical crap is going end up sitting in a landfill, right? Such a waste. These toy companies should be held accountable. 😡
Well, they’re being “held accountable” in that they’re losing money on every unpurchased/massively discounted toy. This hits them in the wallet, which is the best place to hit them. Even a massive company like Disney is slowly learning that they can’t operate at a loss forever.
call me old-fashioned, but my chld wouldn't have that kind of tech in their hands at such a young age...I saw this coming a long time ago..lazy parents letting their kids on youtube so the screen can raise them...an entire generation of mini adults who have had precious years forfeited
@@ResidentRaccoonI don’t know. I was playing around with computers in Kindergarten (I grew up in Cupertino, with my whole family working for tech companies like AMD and HP). Television has been around for decades and decades at this point, but I do think that plenty of Boomers are poisoned by the influence of TV though.
Great post. I think they even passed a law that companies couldn't have commercials for toys during the cartoon the toys are based on (so Transformers toys advertised on GI Joe and vice versa).
Are you forgetting they created whole shows to sell toys? He-Man, GIJoe etc.... All of that was shows made around toys. They just don't do that anymore. Saturday morning cartoons have been dead for a long time.
One of the major reasons Disney paid over $4 BILLION for Star Was was its Male/Boy fanbase. Disney was already big with girls so one of the key deciding factors in buying Star Wars was to cash in on merch sales to males. But the KK-K Girl Boss Wahmmin Empowerment "The Force Is Female" initiative totally destroyed the brand. What little boy is going to beg their mother to buy them a Rose Tico or Vice Admiral Holdo figure? And on the Girl Boss Marvel side, what kid would be caught dead playing with a Shuri Copter? That is a good way to get beat up in the hood and become an outcast.
@guidedmeditation2396 you're right, the freaking geniuses at Disney tried to turn Star Wars and Marvel into girl brands as well. Poor girl brands I might add.
The US Marine Corps will have to collect those toys, and then NOT donate them to Toys for Tots ... maybe they can send them all to Guantanamo Bay Prison ...
What drove my star wars figures purchases as a kid was that we'd actually play with them. I'm not sure how exactly I would have played with Cmdr Hodor. We didn't really do reenactments of gender studies lectures.
I was at a toy store last week and on the Star Wars aisle was a row of Rose Ticos from the Last Jedi that have been there since 2017. I knew because their price label was already well yellowed. Unbelieveable.
Do you think these could be a collectible goldmine? Toys from the 70s like Luke Skywalker are selling for thousands. Someone should buy this in bulk and in a hundred years it could be worth millions.
Several version of Batman, Episode 1 Obi-Wan, Luke Skywalker, Spiderman, the Yellow Power Ranger, Goku, Adult Gohan, Vegeta and some good guy dinos fight an army of evil dinosaurs led by Darth Maul, Perfect Cell, Chancellor Valorum*, and General Thade from Planet of the Apes 2001. Or they'd fight over who got to date Barbie if my cousin was over. Just one of the scenarios I would come up with. I forget some other toys I specifically had and wanna not turn this into a whole novel but, let's just say any stories I was making up as someone that barely knew my multiplication tables, would be far better stories than Hollywood is churning out lately. *I to this day believe I only came into possession of that one because my mom saw a Star Wars logo on the box and knew I would like it either way, and was probably the cheapest. She was right, because who honestly cares about CV like that 😹 Just another addition to my collection, tehee.

If somebody buys up all this inventory I can guarantee you in 200 years it'll be worth gold.
So it begs the question...did disney honestly believe, like straight up was sure, that this merchandise was going to sell? Like the marketing department saw the movies, and thought "oh yeah this is a big big winner, let's make millions of girl dolls". The disconnect from reality just seems too huge.
My understanding is that they have the toys ready to go before the movie is close to finished. Some of the star wars toys were not in the movies and some of them had names which changed.
Whether the toy sold or not is irrelevant to Disney. They just want to fulfill their diversity mandates and be able to say: "See, see? Look how virtuous. Look how down with the cause we are. So don't criticize us for anything. Ever again."
So I asked my mom what she thought of episode 7. She said it was a good epilogue for the original trilogy. I asked if she remembered anything about the new characters and she didn’t. How does Olly’s make money from taking that shit in? Even if they got it free, they’re paying utilities and wages and leases to have this crap take up thousands of cubic feet in their stores and just sit there.

Went through my local ollies, once, and haven't been back. The prices weren't that much different, maybe a buck or two, from other stores, and most of the stuff was typical cheap chinese junk i could get shipped direct on ebay for half or less what they wanted.
Sam Wilson should've still been the Falcon instead of stealing Steve's identity as Captain America, Disney made someone who's black and had a completely original identity to all other MCU heroes into a race swapped Captain America
I knew that is how it was going to go even before the first episode aired. And what do we have now? No movement on the characters since. Because Disney has no long range plan for the MCU. They just piecing it together as they go.
I was watching a video you made about 6 years ago and the discount stores were all stocked with BB8's. Where did they go? Surely they weren't all suddenly sold???
We need a video that searches for the BB8s. "Where are the BB8 toys?" That should be as entertaining as when people went on the search for those Atari ET game cartridges.
I don't get it. I really don't. George had a clue back in the day. He focused his "action figures" on the same size as other popular toy lines. Currently? You got action figures from everything from 3 inch to 12 inch and some "action figures" which aren't even action figures. Which makes all the accessories items for those action figures almost impossible to design. And yes, star wars did go into the 12 inch "action figure" line. But as any boy will tell you those aren't action figures. They are dolls. Their target audience was girls who didn't really take to those toys back then just like the girls aren't taking to the Marvel / Star Wars action figures / dolls now. As a child I did end up with a few 12 inch "dolls" from the original toy lines back during the days of the original trilogy releases but I never played with them. I have no idea who gave them to me for Christmas all those years ago but whoever it was was obviously a woman with no male children. She knew I was into Star Wars and picked "dolls" to give me because she lacks the experience to know boys play with the much smaller action figures.
I think it's good that there's something for everybody but yeah, the essence of what made the original Star Wars line great was lost with the switch to 1/12. Now we barely get ships and decently sized playsets.
DisneyStarWars’ greatest merchandising success was Baby Yoda, when the character went viral in the run-up to the Christmas shopping season, and the toys were finally available for purchase… in Spring of the next year!
Disney, Hasbro, and the others don't get it. PEOPLE ARE BURNED OUT. We've had non-stop Star Wars since 1994, which is 29 years. We've had non-stop capeshit since 2000. The toy aisles are clogged with all the brands of the 80s and 90s but with more articulation. There's zero effort to bring something new or at least bring back a classic line that's not over-done.
I respectfully disagree. While I agree that it would be nice to see something new be created, brands like Star Wars and Marvel have continued to be brought to shelf because they are iconic and loved by the fans. As long as the IP holder treats the brands well, the toys will continue to sell. The problem is: 1. the IP holdesr has disparaged the characters that the fans LOVED, driving away the older fans. 2. the IP holders had created and pushed new characters who fail to be accepted by either older or younger fans (the latter whom exist in smaller numbers since the new media fails to entice them). 3. Overproduction in general. That Disney created SO MANY Holdo figures or Shuri copters was insane. There are STACKS of them. Even the most popular heroes like Spiderman would be pressed to sell so much. Protect the IP and produce sensibly and profit will ensue. While hopefully leaving space for a new generation of creators (not the current diversity hires) to produce this generations Star Wars or Marvel.
I would argue that we do need some more new material tough, rather than just focus on new brands. Like right now i switch to collecting Avatar Merch cause one it is more limited and it is a growing brand name. It also helps that the movies come out every few years rathan then all the time plus since JC is handling it, you know it wont have the stink of corporate influence and Disney is in no shape to tell how JC to do it since he is the most succesfull movie director they still have and his influence is to high to ignore.
Disney gets it. They know that the public isn't buying what they're selling. They know they are ruining their future. They have been told by many people, they can see it in their financials and market research. They knew it from the start, really, but they can't stop themselves. They are addicted to their own self destructive obsession.
The problem is, stores keep buying them, when you see them at major retailers, disney already has thier money. Stores like ollies and big lots buy in bulk hoping they can sell the garbage and big stores are happy to get rid of said garbage
One day I'm going to go into my local Ollie's and do a "detailed inventory" of these characters and their "attributes." I have to know how many fall into a certain category.

Its like this in Australia to. We don't have any big discount stores selling them like this. But the toy stores have most on discount, marvel and Star wars figures. But nothing sells. They just sit There gathering dust. Our chain stores like Target, Kmart and Big W don't really have much of each on their shelves at all, and from what I have seen. What they do have just sits there. Before the Disney era they used to have a whole section just for these properties. Pretty impressive to kill 2 popular IP's and there merchandise (which where the real money was compared to the movies) within about 10 years. All I can think of is, they didn't really understand the main fan bases that followed them. And these were never really ment to be main stream. And they learned being a fan doesn't mean that you blindly follow what they put out. Then we also now have that new thing called a super fan, what crap is that. To try and sell these things. From what I heard someone say once that it is impossible to make anything to please everyone.

Are brands just choosing the wrong things to make toys of?
So how much longer before they need to send them back for recycling or to the landpit?(they really should recycle them). it has been awhile, don't they have a set period? Maybe they should give them away to charity shops if they can, do some good out of the bad.

Hell, I’m on a screen right now. I think it’s more about WHAT kids watch and read these days and less about how they get it.
It's always a good day when Jeff releases another video of unsaleable Disney/SW crap!
I love these videos. So satisfiying.

Unbelieveable.

Nah.. not even they would want it. These toys, just don't look good at all.
Do you think these could be a collectible goldmine? Toys from the 70s like Luke Skywalker are selling for thousands. Someone should buy this in bulk and in a hundred years it could be worth millions.
Remember when Toys where actual cool and fun? Hours of fun!
I still have boxes of all my toys, alien and predator, ninja turles, batman forever batmobile and batwing are some of my favorites
Nobody plays with toys anymore. Even 4 and 5 year olds all do gaming.

@@jonfreeman9682Honestly kinda sad, because I see so much potential still in action figures and dolls for fostering creativity in children, rather than some pre-built assets and story in a video game.

@@Exlayer-pk8hyMaybe call him the Millenium Falcon.
The problem is:
1. the IP holdesr has disparaged the characters that the fans LOVED, driving away the older fans.
2. the IP holders had created and pushed new characters who fail to be accepted by either older or younger fans (the latter whom exist in smaller numbers since the new media fails to entice them).
The failure of Disney to sell merchandise is sad, plus I think we're going to see an atari situation where Disney will send this to a landfill. Crush it and bury it with cement, who here agrees with me?

Pretty impressive to kill 2 popular IP's and there merchandise (which where the real money was compared to the movies) within about 10 years.
All I can think of is, they didn't really understand the main fan bases that followed them. And these were never really ment to be main stream.
And they learned being a fan doesn't mean that you blindly follow what they put out. Then we also now have that new thing called a super fan, what crap is that. To try and sell these things.

It's very interesting to notice how many of these toys are, well.... Boy-centric. Marvel, DC, transformers, Hotwheels... All brands that would be put in the boys isle!! Are boys toys experiencing a dry spell or what?
When I go to the girls toys isle at my local stores, they are always selling perfectly fine.
