    Hey my name is Amos O’Neill & I’m 23 yrs old now. I was diagnosed with the same disorder and know exactly what that little girl is going through because that was me. The doctors said I wasn’t going to live past the age of 13 yrs old (obvs I’ve proven them wrong being 23 now). I stopped having blood transfusions around the age of 16/17 and I haven’t taken any steroid medication for at least 7/8 yrs. I am very fortunate and blessed to have overcome something that felt impossible.
    This girl is my hero!

      bone marrow donation can be very dangerous. if the bone marrow isn’t a 100% match with the donor and recipient, the donor has the chance of getting graft vs host disease, where the bone marrow is rejected and it’s very painful and it can be deadly.

    • @briinahkriid
      @briinahkriid 4 года назад +36

      @@hannahbailey6424 That's not true, the only risk of complications for the donors are related to the anesthesia or damage to nerves and bones, there is no risk of a donor getting graft vs host disease (because he's not the one on the receiving end). It is indeed a risk for the receiver of the marrow, though. (Source: bethematch.org/support-the-cause/donate-bone-marrow/donation-faqs/)

    • @flyaround312
      @flyaround312 4 года назад +20

      @@Chanhee Donors are carefully selected to make sure they're low risk. I wanted to add myself to the donor registry but I didn't qualify because of a medical condition I have. In addition, many bone marrow transplants only require the donation of blood. They're not dangerous at all for the donor. The type that require drilling into bone are only risky for people with certain medical conditions, who are excluded from donating, and people at high risk of anesthesia complications are also excluded. The recipient can get graft vs host disease, but careful testing is done to reduce the chance of that happening.

      Exactly. I give blood whenever I can. Quite convieniatly the local blood donation service turns up at my university every couple of months or so so if I can I give blood then. And the trick with giving blood (or having a blood test too) is to make sure you have had plenty of fluids. This makes the blood vessels easier to find and get blood from.

      Never regret donating blood, you never know who's life, you will save literally blood donation saves lives throughout the world. It can be packed & stored in many various ways and just overcoming your fear is something you will feel good about.
      I never thought donating blood was that important, I thought there were thousands of people until I donated once. You know, there are many different blood types and all of a sudden they kept calling me every week, and I would go every month when the blood mobile showed up. Finally, one day, I was exasperated, because they kept calling, and I didn't have a problem going, but why were they so worried, pressuring, hopeful I was donating? I had survived leukemia, I had it for 10 years, untreatable, incurable. I was lucky a geneticist saved my life, and I went into remission miraculously as a matter of fact, my oncologist thought I had gone to another country and got a cure. After that, I started donating. I asked them why they were asking me so often, and I found out that my blood is only 2% of the population! Think about that, I also found out that was why I couldn't have children by my husband, because he didn't have the same blood type as I did, because mine was so rare. I wish I had known that 30 years before, I would have tried to find somebody but war has shrank my blood type. So they were so excited to find someone else in the local area that had this blood type, which is very uncommon where I live in Southern California.
      Sadly, I'm not allowed to donate anymore, as the new director have them interview, as for any medical problems. And I said, well, I'm a leukemia survivor, and that's why I donate. The new director went ballistic, it's not that they thought I would give them leukemia in my blood, they were terrified, they would give me the key me by removing my blood. It breaks my heart that I can not donate to help others who have my rare blood type. The people I admire are the ones who have the universal blood, because they can give for everybody. Can you imagine that a person's blood can literally save someone else's life. What a wonderous design, the body is.

There was a story I saw about some little girls with this condition. I think conditions like these are what started the Vampire stories. There might even have been a virus or bacteria at some point in history that could cause this kind of condition that could be spread among people also. Vampirism nowadays is better understood and medically treated just like any medical condition.

Saying her life is not worth living is simply disgusting. However I agree that from an evolutionary standpoint she's clearly got a massive disadvantage. But as humans we are past that point. Most of us would've actually died at birth or live an unhealthy lifestyle that would make us unfit for survival , so most people would've to be weeded out if you really think that way.

    My heart breaks for this sweet girl. I have DBA as well and the condition effects people differently and stories like her give me great hope and strength and encouragement. There’s people whose bodies reject blood, steroids and bone marrow. I’ve been fortunate to have been in remission for a few years now but I understand others stories aren’t as blessed as mine and I wanna raise awareness and help whenever I’m able to. People like this angel are heroes to me

      I feel bad for kids that live their life in the hospital and not able to do the little kid stuff, school, parks, etc
      I ben on steriods since 8 months old now 22 yrs old. I'm very fortunate to be able to graduate school and hang/ play with my neices and nephews.
      Im proud where I am. And I hope these kids get to enjoy alot ❤💎❤💎

In my state, parents can't sign a release form for someone to donate until 16 unfortunately (but you can become an organ donor at any age which I highly recommend!) it's really just 20 minutes to save someone's life

      Bella 138 - Good for you!! Blood donation is so critical. My brother received blood more than once during his life. I wish I could donate and give back, but my own disability rules me out. So instead I convince healthy people to donate, lol.

      Cassie C I'm so glad to hear that your brother has benefited from blood donation. I hope he and you are doing well. I'm sorry that you are unable to donate- I'm anemic so before I do donate I'll have to get my iron count up to a certain level. A lot of people I know aren't eligible to donate because they are gay men or they have a blood disorder; I feel very lucky to get the opportunity to donate. It's really great that you are encouraging healthy people to donate!

      It's neat to see your own rare disease represented in media. There are extremely few examples of my primary disability (full body CRPS type II) in the media. Actually, I don't know if I've ever seen a type II-er on tv before. I think everyone I've seen (all 2 or 3, lol) had type I. Which would make more sense- it's 10 times more common than type II (though it's still rare, happening to only 1 in 5,000 people- type II is 1 in 50,000).

    I’d love to donate blood, but I’m underweight and am prone to passing out. I guess my job is to spread it along!

      I can't donate cause I tried but kept freaking over the needles so I helped in other ways like volunteering at the red cross which helped raise money for all the good work they do, like paying the nurses who take the blood, transportation and processing and even paying for the cookies and water bottles.

      Actually I can't cause they suggested that I don't try again until I have my panic attacks under control.

      Skyler Gray she's helping in other ways though I wouldn't donate blood because of the needles too

      Skyler Gray that's abit ignorant. Some people have real phobias of needles 😂 but if that were me I would definitely donate regardless :)
