    All of these chip upgrades after M1 Pro/Max (even M1 tbh) seems to cater more and more to a smaller group of professionals that will actually need that extra performance bump or to those that haven’t made the jump from Intel-based Macs. You can basically look now for a used and decently spec’d M1 Max Macbook Pro on the market and that thing will do more than well for the next few years.

      From a M1 device I would never consider buying a new machine. From an intel? Yes!

    Thanks for the video!
    I'm planning to upgrade from my 13" M1 MBP and I'm very curious about the video editing performance differences of the M3 Max.
    Are you planning to compare differently configured M3's?
    I'm very curious about whether upgrading from 30 to 40 GPU cores or getting more unified memory will make a bigger difference in heavy video editing (color grading and using effects) in DaVinci.
    I know its a very specific question, but I'd be very happy about a general video showing the video editing performance of the M3 you showed in this video.
    Thanks again!

    When Apple launched the M1Max MBP, it was a total revolution. I had the best i9 MBP and changing it to a M1Max was tremendous, everything was damn faster, without the fan noise !
    And now, the M3Max is nearly 2x faster ... that's insane

    You always have the best reviews!! Can I pass on a small bit of constructive critisism. Listening to your voice over on $12,000 ATC studio monitors and then switching to my Genelec 1032C's can I suggest using a de-esser in post when you use the microphone you are using in this video. It seems the mic you are using is really sedative to sibilance especially S & Ts. Most editing software comes with a De-esser, but if your doesn't you can gran the Plugin Alliance Lindell 902 really cheap. Sometimes when you edit on smaller speakers or headphones sibilance can be dampened by them but on a full range speaker. On my MacBook Pro speakers it's fine because of the camping of the speakers but on everything else in the studio it's really noticeable. Just a small touch of De-essing and your Voiceovers would be perfect. Your EQ and compression settings seem to be fine. Cheers!! I hope to see some creators compare the new M3 models to the original M1 models since that seems to be the target buyers Apple is going for!! Have a great day!

    • @alexandrevery
      @alexandrevery 7 месяцев назад +1

      High power mode doesn't mean the machine is more powerful ^^
      It just means that the fan will spin faster on big renderings ... so in that precise case of very intense usage on a long time, this mode will reduce throttling, and the user will gain .... few minutes of rendering.
      Saying that differently : this mode is useless for 99% of users 🙂 But it's still a good news to find it on the 14'' model

  • @dpptd30
    @dpptd30 7 месяцев назад +4

    Blender is already using hardware raytracing in cycles rendering right now, metal API already handled it right out of the box so that Blender does not have to put effort into supporting Apple's RT hardware, so your benchmark in blender is actually reflecting the performance increase that the RT hardware provides over the M2 Max which doesn't have it, that is why the performance uplift in 3D is much higher than in video rendering workflow. The reason why the M2 Max is so much faster than the M1 Max in GPU is because of the scaling issue with the M1 Max that they fixed in the M2 Max, and the reason why the M3 Max is so much faster than the M2 Max is because of hardware accelerated raytracing being added, so the two generation's performance uplift is due to completely different reasons, and definitely not just because they are using more transistors. To be honest this level of performance is still disappointing compared to Nvidia; other than the efficiency advantage, the M3 Max can't really even beat a 4060 mobile in 3D rendering and AI due to Nvidia's superior hardware RT implementation and Tensor cores, and it couldn't beat the 4090 mobile in raw compute because it simply couldn't match the sheer size of the 4090 mobile.

    • @scott-richardson
      @scott-richardson 7 месяцев назад

      I wonder if the ray tracing hardware is on each GPU core? Or if it is in its own cluster? Does the ray tracing hardware transistor count scale up with more GPU cores? Lots of details still to unearth about these new chips!

    • @tronam
      @tronam 7 месяцев назад

      Of course those results are disappointing, because he didn't configure Blender to take advantage of the GPU at all! It would be like buying an Nvidia card, then not using it for anything other than painting the desktop. I have the lower end M2 Max with fewer cores than the charted example that took 24.1min. When set up properly for Metal GPU compute the result is actually closer to 4.5min, about 1/5th the time. I don't have an M3 Max to test, but if these results scale relatively well, that could potentially mean ~2.5-3min which is actually quite decent for a laptop chip on battery. High end Nvidia GPUs are still significantly faster, but not nearly as embarrassingly so as suggested in the video.

    • @alexandrevery
      @alexandrevery 7 месяцев назад +1

      A M1Macbook Air base model (8/256) is able to do 4K editing ...
      But editors usually work on high end laptops or workstation, because in a professional workflow you need to do more than just cut and edit footages on a timeline : color grading, effects, etc, that can require huge amount of CPU power, GPU power and RAM
      To answer your question, we (and you) need to know what you precisely do when editing. The answer car result from a M3 Macbook Pro to a full-options Mac Studio Ultra or Macbook Pro M3Max. All theses can do 4K editing with ease, but depending on what you really do, you may need a M3, M3Pro, M3Max, 16GB or RAM, or 32, or 64 ... or more, 1TB storage, or 2TB, or 4TB

    • @alexandrevery
      @alexandrevery 7 месяцев назад

      @@stitchyrichie The M3Max is more than capable of doing that. It's a total beast that is dedicated to strong tasks like heavy motion design, vfx, very big 4k or 8k projects with huge amount of effects, plug-ins (denoise, etc) .. it's barely a workstation. Who can do more can do less so you will be ultra-comfortable with this machine, but I think a good M3Pro with lots of Ram and storage (at least 2 or 4GB) would do the job pretty well, for less bucks.

    Considering the M1 ultra was a bit of a disappointment and didn't achieve the doubling of performance over the M1 Max everyone was expecting, its not surprising the M3 Max is faster.
    Theres a reason why Apple wants everyone to compare it to the M1 because compared to the M2 the performance increase isn't exactly the second coming of Apple silicon people were lead to believe 3nm would be.

    I have the serious question why I should consider an iMac or mac studio or mac pro, if I can have a comparable performance on the go and just plug it into an external monitor. For a mac studio or mac pro I would need an external monitor anyway to use. And the iMac is weaker than a macbook pro.
    I would use the extra money to enhance the ram or ssd of the macbook pro.

    What about current ray tracing support? Where's the 3DMark Solar Bay benchmark? (In full-screen/game mode). Only Blender 4.0 seems to automatically use MetalRT so it's unknown if BlenderBench (3.6) uses it as there's no option to enable it from the launcher. As for using the intentionally sub-optimal Cinebench R23 (which uses the version of Embree which Intel hobbled by turning off the 2nd NEON SIMD) - that should be banned, Cinebench 2024 seems more honest.
    It'll be interesting to see how things look after the optimisations roll out & reviewers get up to speed.

    Also, what is your opinion on the 14 inches' thermal situation? Since the chassis stayed the same since M1 and now the M3 is even more demanding, would the 16 be a better option considering longetively of the chassis and the battery? For the 14, I can comfortably stretch to even 64gb ram but the thermal situation had me reconsidering.

      If you're keeping it for 6+ years and doing constant video and photo editing - yes, spend the extra $500 if you can afford it.
      Can't comment on the 14" thermals, too early to say. I did see some thermal throttling with M2 Max in the 14" chassis, so I personally would go for the 16".

    I think the M4 will be the real killer. The M1 did have slow GPU performance vs PC. Finally the M3 is improving in that area. I think the M4 will close that gap significantly.

    Great performance for a laptop computer, but when compared to a *low* *cost* Windows desktop PC, M3 Pro and M3 Max get blown away.
    Windows PC is half the cost, and double the performance.

      True! This is a niche device aimed at a tiny few people with big bank accounts and the need for the best performance in certain workflows. The base M3 MB Pro 14 or the upcoming M3 MB Airs are for the majority.
