    [Try4ce] Hey everyone! I wanted to leave a word of caution here to Super Scope owners (or prospective Super Scope owners). This was originally in the video, but just took too much time to say, and it's nothing more than my own speculation.
    As I said in the video, I stupidly bought two Super Scopes, but there's actually another reason this is good for me other than that the first one didn't come with the sight assembly. That's because the second one has a malfunctioning receiver. The Super Scope itself works just fine with it, BUT controllers plugged into port 1 will not function correctly. Most buttons and Dpad directions simply don't work, although Start is mapped to B for some reason.
    For a while, I thought this was just how things are. But then, how would you enter hard mode codes for games like Battle Clash and Metal Combat? Or play Yoshi's Safari's 2-player mode with a controller? I tried this with three different controllers on two different consoles. The controller was simply unusable in any game if the Super Scope receiver was plugged in. Finally, I tried the first receiver (the yellowed one)... and controllers work normally with that one!
    Is this a common issue, or am I the only person in the world to have encountered this? I can't find any discussion online that would suggest it is a known issue. HOWEVER! When I first got that second Super Scope, I did try to use its receiver with a controller extension cable. It didn't work. But when I plugged it directly into the console, it seemed to work fine. But now all these years later, I can't help but wonder if that somehow damaged that receiver. I asked a couple of people if that made any sense, and they said the extension would have to be wired REALLY WRONG for that to be likely. So it might be nothing, but we just don't know for sure. Either way, I'm definitely not trying a controller extension with the receiver that I know works normally! So unless you're feeling adventurous or have the means to safely test it for yourself, I'd say it would be prudent to avoid using controller extensions with the Super Scope.

      Hmm as a guy who bought the Super Scope on launch day and still owns it today, I have to say I've never encountered such an issue. However, I only played four games: Super Scope 6, Battle Clash, Metal Combat and Yoshi's Safari.

  • @seantaft3853
    @seantaft3853 3 года назад +5

    For the battery issue:
    A lot of that comes from the 90's era where certain kinds of batteries (especially rechargeable) didn't hold up under higher current loads like the Super Scope.
    No kidding, I had several old rechargeable batteries completely die (unable to be recharged) because of the current loads from it.
    Batteries in 2021 are a lot better so those issues from almost 30 years ago should be mostly resolved.
    Just remember to turn it off when it's not in use.

    Metal Combat is an awesome game. While you said it was relatively unchallenging that is only because you are effectively playing on the easiest story mode until you unlock what the game calls 'Real Mode' after beating the game once. Can be insanely challenging on the hardest difficulty and great fun.

    Our house was one of the weird ones. The SNES package we bought, brand-new in the early 90s, was the Super Scope bundle. Sadly, I never knew of any games that supported it so I only ever played the bundled six-game cartridge.
    I found that the best way to play games was to keep my glasses on - this was, of course, after my myopia had been diagnosed - and keep both eyes open. I could still tell where I was aiming through the pinhole, but I could also take in the whole screen at the same time.

    Awesome video, both for the nostalgic retrospective and for the informative reviews of games I hadn't even heard of! I came here because I randomly mentioned the Super Scope 6, which I had some fond memories of but I really only played two of the six minigames.
    Battle Clash was quite underrated - I tried to show my friends how to use the charged up shots (or Laser Bolts, I think the game calls it?) but they didn't get it and just kept asking why their 'pea shooter' wasn't doing any damage. 😅 And that Lemmings 2 easter egg?! That was a lesser-known game in my collection, and I had no idea I could have been blowing off steam by blasting the poor little guys!

      It would be pretty cool to have it as a side Co-op mode where one player control the character while the other shoot. Or a defense mode where you just shoot.
      But as it is, the game require much more skill for control AND shoot to work as a Super Scope title imo.

    • @CarmenOfSpades
      @CarmenOfSpades 3 года назад +1

      It wouldn't make any sense... the game is balanced around not being able to shoot while moving, while also trying to incentivise dodging as little as possible until absolutely necessary.

After experiencing that and the Konami Justifier later on the Genesis I was shocked as a kid when I belatedly found out (I never had a SNES) that the Super Scope was the sequel to the Zapper. Maybe just me, but I like the Super Scope 6 cart a lot. Grew up playing SS6 and Yoshi's Safari on our system at home. The whack-a-mole was a favorite in the house and I liked all the LazerBlazer modes (Confront being the favorite of those modes). The co-op mode in Yoshi's Safari was fun and one of the ways my sister and I figured out getting along back then. True that SS6 wasn't really a big cohesive game or anything and was more of a tech demo for the Super Scope, but it certainly got a lot of play at home growing up. There are dev documents that say to not call the wii remote the "nunchuck" anywhere and that the wii can never be used with a trigger too much like a rife, this superscope using a front button instead of a trigger and rear button on the top shows that after the Zapper Nintendo was super scared of appearing too gun like.

  • @WhiteJarrah
    @WhiteJarrah 3 года назад +8

    4:13 Everybody who has used an actual scoped rifle should know this, but for those new to using real firearms: DO NOT ATTEMPT THIS WITH A REAL SNIPER'S RIFLE. While it may seem intuitive to put your eye up against the scope's eyepiece, on a real rifle you MUST have some space between the rear of the scope and your eye. Because on a real gun, the recoil you get when pulling the trigger will force the scope violently into your eye socket.

    I had one. It was pretty rad. Ran through batteries quickly though. Got the most run as a toy to shoot imaginary bad guys. The battle robot game was dope and the yoshi game was AWESOME.

    Fantastic Video!
    I'm a big Lightgunfan since the GCon45 when I turned 18. My parents never allowed me to buy a Lightgun before. But I made up for it and now I own 4 Super Scopes and 4 Battleclashes. I only knew one classmate in the 90s who own a Super Scope, but I was not a big fan of it cause to the size. We liked the Menacer for Mega Drive much more.

    Thank you for this video. I couldn't think how to describe these to my wife, so I Google searched SNES Bazooka and found your video. This video is so underviewed! Thank you again gah! I can't wait to pickup one of these off eBay when I can haha!

    Whenever I was a kid, I purchased a loose cartridge of Yoshi's Safari, thinking it was another platformer starring Yoshi instead of Mario. Needless to say I was quite disappointed when I realized I couldn't play it.. About 8 years ago when began playing my old games again, I decided to purchase a Super Scope to finally try it after all those years. It was fun, but unsure how soon I'll play it again.
    Great to see this relative oddball peripheral come back to light! Thanks for the video!

    3:04 I don't know if I'm imagining things, but batteries seem to have become a lot more efficient than 20 or 30 years ago.
    Or maybe it was because back then, I was pulling batteries out of the TV remote half the time...

    Oddly enough, my dad had a Menacer for the Genesis back in the day, and the one game he and I used it for was T2. I wish he still had it - I'd probably sell it, but he just tosses things.

    I got a Super Scope for Christmas as a kid and I was the talk of the neighborhood!
    For some reason I still have it, and the box it came in... just missing the rubber end of the sight. (I wear glasses, so maybe that's why I took it off and it got lost). It's just something that I've never sold or tossed, it keeps getting slipped in with all my moving boxes every time I go somewhere else.

    It was VERY likely I was the only one in my neighborhood that owned a Super Scope. Battle Clash and Metal Combat were the best games for it.

    I remember being really disappointed back in the day. I found it uncomfortable and it strained my eyes. Also I never got any other games apart from the pack in. But definitely would like to give it a test again with some of these other games and reassess it again.

    I got the Scope along with my SNES as a kid, i thought it was cool although I only owned SS6, which was a very limited set of games. The only other game I'd even heard of that was compatible with it was Yoshi's Safari, which I wasn't going to pick when I had games like Terranigma or Secret of Mana to choose from instead. The batteries did drain like crazy, especially if you forgot to turn it off. SS6 was also a missed opportunity, Blastris could've been a lot better.
    I'm glad to see you like X-Zone, I tried it a while ago on my SD2SNES with my scope on a whim and couldn't put it down, the hard mode is insane and very intense, I was just waving my scope around trying to get everything. I kind of wish it had some way for the player to raise a shield or something to protect against hitscan minigun weapons because hard mode at some point becomes almost impossible, I still think it's the best scope game though.

    I got a Super Scope for $10 on clearance at KBee Toy Store probably around 95, the compatible games were all $10 or less as well at that point so I bought Battleclash. The experience was great for the first 6 months, all the games that were compatible were easy to rent from video stores, I would rent them and beat them in a weekend pretty easily. Most games were very enjoyable. Then I started to have calibration issues, I think the censor inside the "transmitter" started to drift, eventually I couldn't even get any shots to register, so at about the 1 year mark after buying it, I think I just threw it in the trash and called it a day, eventually got rid of my copy of Battleclash since I wrote off the peripheral as cheap garbage with no intention of purchasing another one. I was the only person I knew who owned one, so I can't speak to anyone else's experience with it. I'm always surprised to see one working almost 30 years later because of how quickly mine had deteriorated.
