  • Travel has a lot to do with the costs of living. How expensive is Chiang Mai - The biggest northern city of Thailand ? Today we break down the cost of accommodation, food and drink, transportation and also activities to help you budget your trip to Thailand better, specifically in Chiang Mai which is one of the most popular destination in Thailand, where we stay for a month and it totally make our experience in Thailand amazing.
    Thailand is a place where you could find great hotels, apartments and restaurants at really reasonable prices, especially in the popular city of the country like Chiang Mai. The country is generally said a bit more expensive than the neighbor country like Vietnam but it is still affordable for budget traveler or backpackers who dream of traveling South East Asia. it is still really affordable place to spend your vacation, especially in comparison with Country in North America ; America, Canada and in Europe.

    American and Thai travel couple left the career in military and finance to become travel story teller. We met in 2015 in South Korea when Jimmy was in U.S. army and Tah studied for bachelor degree. We are also living in Chiang Mai since 1 month. Appartement with gym and pool and all the house-stuff we needed. Total 7500 bath. Food spending on average 200 bath in total ( 2 people ) per day. Its really a good solution for relax life-style for a good price

      Hi Miquel, have a look at perfecthomes.co.th We used this. Keep in mind that living in Nimman Area will cost you at least 400 USD. If you are willing to live outside of Nimman, because you have a scooter. Then you will find a great deal for 7000 or 8000 bath. We are living in Punna Oasis. You can google it if you want. And i know they have still many appartments left to rent.

    Nice video. I just got home from my bike trip and am getting caught up on all the videos I missed. I rode 1,700 miles from TN to northern Utah (plus how ever many miles I rode with my son while there). From there to northern Wisconsin to visit another son, 1,400+ miles (however many more miles I rode while up there to see the beautiful fall colors). Finally, back to TN to see my son that still lives in TN, and home. Close to 5,000 miles on a bike loaded down with too much gear and two people. We rode through very strong wind, including 45+mph wind gusts in Wyoming, cold, rain, traffic, etc. My throttle hand has a pinched nerve now and my fingers are numb and tingly painful. I am watching all missed videos, but will probably only thumbs up since I have so many to catch up on, but this video was fantastic, not to mention makes me hungry. Well done!

    There are tons of places in Chiangmai to visit e.g. Doi Angkhang, Chiangdao, Huay Nam Dang, Doi In Thanon, Mae Jam. Try home stay with locals on the mountains overnight, wake up in the morning for fresh air and sea of fogs.

    Curious if you have any suggestions on best way to book my flights. My sister and I are traveling to Bali in May and we decided to add an extra week to travel over to Chiang Mai Thailand. Would you suggest buying a multi-city flight from the states? Or buying a one way tickets from states to bali and from thailand to the states, which would mean buying our Thailand ticket while in Bali and a return from Thailand back to the states?

    If we talk about "budget travel" like you said, 300$+ rent is not really on the budget side + internet + sheets ecc
    Thats the price to rent a nice appartment in italy for example, without a pool ofcourse ;) but still..

    • @DivertLiving
      @DivertLiving  6 лет назад +1

      That is budget for a place with a kitchen. Trust me you could go cheaper... very easy but you wont have a kitchen and to get a kitchen you normally pay a lot more. In total we did budget hard for the month we were there its ok if you dont think so but you cant compare it to italy because we never know the cost difference especially if you are not a local

    Well you have cherry picked the good parts of cm but i certainly remember the not so good. i made two trips in the last two years of three months each. At the end of the six months some things really started to annoy.
    in no particular order
    CM has a traffic problem, recent booming development has meant many people have ditched the scooters and upgraded to cars usually large suv pickup types and the roads cannot handle it. by the maya mall and the superhighway will be gridlocked most of the day and the same around the moat. thai traffic lights seem to hold you for a very long time allowing a half mile jam to build up all releasing toxic fumes. the songthaews are particularly bad for this with a cloud of black smoke following them around.
    prices are getting very high for western style living if you want to eat a bowl of rice sitting on a small plastic chair with flies buzzing you in 36 c heat next to a busy road them you can eat cheaply. if not many prices are higher than in the usa.
    condos for monthly rental are getting expensive by thai standards and are all small. which is strange because many of the buildings are half or more empty. bubble will burst at some point
    burning season is good if you like living in what feels like a post apocalyptic wasteland. many days the mountain will be blocked out by the smog. cm has one of the highest rates of lung cancer in the world for the reasons above.
    rainy season most of our summer but really bad sept october.
    some thais are starting to get pissed off with the large number of ferangs and actively dislike the horads of chinese. DON'T STAY IN A HOTEL POPULAR WITH THEM.
    The best time to go is the end of the wet season before coach loads of chinese turn up. so late oct early nov.
    the lack of pavements will start to piss you off, having to walk on busy roads and avoid traffic and other signage placed right in the middle of the walk way if you can call a thin strip of broken brick or concrete a walkway. if you are over 6ft beware of walking into electrical cables
    the famous night markets once you have seen one you've seen them all. mostly stalls selling tat or food stalls thats sell meat of undetermined origin served in a plastic bag with a pool of oil at the bottom.

      CHIANG MAI is done, cheap sure! The air pollution, grid locked roads, over 90 degrees everyday, locals no longer like us unless you dpend big money! Lived there for 10yrs& finally saw the light! Now live in MEXICO & just as cheap but people are friendly, weather ideal, food awesome, no pollution&do your homework & prove me wrong!

    • @PopularTymn
      @PopularTymn 6 лет назад +1

      You are right about Chiangmai bad traffic but you can avoid by staying a distant from downtown and using motorbike is very easy during heavy traffic and you can get cheap apartment as well.
      Condo is expensive for local Thai and they get another choice on cheap apartment that can find everywhere not too far from downtown. Mostly condo is for foreigner and people from Bangkok who do business in Chiangmai.
      The pollution from burning season this year become a little bit because of early raining and from Asia Pacific Lung Cancer Conference or APLCC (2016), China has 800,000 cases, India 70,000 cases and Thailand 19,500 cases but mostly or 90% are from tobacco smoking.
      Food from walking street is a tourist favourite food and closely supervised by Chiangmai Municipal Officer and you can get cheaper food from local fresh market. If you can not bear with hot weather there are many shopping malls to stay in air conditioning and not too expensive food just like Maya Mall at the basement or B1, food starting from 40-50 bahts(1.21-1.51 USD).
      Thai are one of the friendliest people from many travelling sources but there are also a small amount just like some Songthaew who scam and wrangled with Grab.
      The cables that you saw at low level are telephone and internet cables but electric cables are higher level for safety purpose at 8 metres height for low voltage and 12 metres height for high voltage.

We really like this Trio Condo and we are consider it strongly :) Best regards for both of you! And maybe we will see each other some place there! Best regards from Poland!

    • @robevans8625
      @robevans8625 6 лет назад

      most condos rent for one year or six months three months. your choice will be much smaller with one month many will even tell you them don't do one month hoping you will sign up for longer or will say they have no rooms available because one month for them isn't worth the hassle. you will also need to factor in a large deposit or at least one months rental which they will want in cash only. then getting internet sorted for one month is a no go so you need to find a condo with it already up and running. a 15000 baht condo will be the price for one year per month the price for only one month will be much more 25000 with a 25000 deposit it may be cheaper to airbnb at least then you are protected if something goes wrong

      In general, everyone says get a hotel for a night or two and then walk around and look for an apartment or a monthly rental but you are right, I think, to be concerned. Not only is it the great weather and smoke-free time of year there but it is getting into the holiday season and the to internationally-known Light and Lantern festivals will start around November 22nd which brings in thousands of people.
      I've been looking online already for 6 weeks and haven't found the amenities I want for under 500 US dollars a month because all the cheaper deals are taken.
      I've been in Chiang Mai before but not since 2003 and there are a ton of young digital Nomads living there by the month now. Let me know if you find a great deal somewhere- I want a balcony and a little kitchenette included with fast Wi-Fi.

    It is a totally stupid idea to buy bottled water. Hotel and residence rooms come with an electric tea pot, use it to boil tap water. Or you can buy a pot at Baan & Beyond or similar store. I can assure that Chiang Mai water tastes great. I lived in Shenzhen China for 6 years and was doing same, but Shenzhen water has a very bad taste. So, don't waste your money buying bottled water.

      One more thing: the teapot will shut off when the water finished boiling, you can only use it when it cools off, that will take a few hours. I always keep cold water in the fridge, refill old plastic water bottles. But you can probably save more than 50 baht a day on bottled water, that's 1500 baht a month.
