The "No Skill" DIY Workbench Build - Start Woodworking Series Launch (Class One)

  • Опубликовано: 2 май 2020
  • Key Points:
    - It's solid with no racking or walking
    - Able to work boards on end, edge and face
    - Can be build by a "No Skill" beginner
    - Costs between $100 & $200
    - Doesn't take long to finish
    - Easily repurposed for a lifetime of use
Workbenches and having the tools/skills to build them is a chicken and egg situation for brand new woodworkers. So this bench is the fuse to light up a new hobby or study path. 3-4 simple hand tools that almost all woodworkers use and absolutely no previous skills is all it takes. And at the end of the build not only will you have a lifetime resource of a bench but also gained some skill and confidence plus the foundation tool of the series.
While in this video I used about $200 in both materials and tool acquisition if you have access to a hand saw, screwdriver or drill, tape measure and square plus chose mdf or osb instead of plywood then you could get by with about $100 to finish the bench.
And this is the foundation of an entirely new series at wortheffort. One designed for new woodworkers to start making messes. A skills development series that'll utilize a very limited set of hand tools (not much money) and a small 10" band saw. I'm labeling it a "sophomore level" course because it'll build upon the "Prerequisite Course" which highlighted some basic overall theories of the craft without to many projects.
I hope you'll build along with us and bring along a friend/student of your own.
    ----------------------------------------------------------
    Plans (sketch) - wortheffort.com/s/StartWoodwor...
    ----------------------------------------------------------
    Bonus:
The Prerequisite Course Series - • Prerequisite Course
    Educator Prompts:
    - How does the "platform" used at the end of the video eliminate a bench "walking" in use?
    - How does having the wider screw anchors offered by the corner brackets reduce "racking" (the flexing from corner to corner of a piece)?
    - Why would you want to pound work over a leg vs the middle of a bench?
Materials Used (links are NOT affilliate):
    - Corner Brackets, I believe made by many companies. Here I used
www.amazon.com/shop/wortheffo... which is a associate page that will send a percentage of your purchase back to wortheffort.
    or
    www.homedepot.com/p/Simpson-S...
    - Screws I used: www.homedepot.com/p/Simpson-S...
    - Alternative Kit using 2x4 instead of 4x4: Simpson WBSK Workbench & Shelving Hardware Kit
    ----------------------------------------------------------

I totally agree with you!! I struggled through woodworking in high school because my teacher was a......well anyway he was difficult, and I had so many questions about woodworking but would never ask due to his attitude. Today I would love to be a professional woodworker but sadly I "settled" for a carrier that I am not happy with. This man is a teacher and a dam good one at that!!

Feeling very nostalgic watching this! My dad started me (at 9 years old) on building a basic bench in the family garage to be MY bench, probably so I'd stop cluttering his up! I measured and ,sawed every board, drove every nail, made every error... under his watchful eye! I can remember him saying "Don't sweat it!" or "Close enough" so allow me the confidence to keep building. It served me well for many years, as did the lessons learned! Almost 60 years later, I am still "makin' sawdust!"
One side-note ...after this first project, he was relentless in coaching the value of accurate cuts. He used to say "(If you) cut it like you're building a birdhouse, all you'll ever build is birdhouses"
Thank you for sharing your knowledge and encouraging the learning of THE BASICS! Learning good , basic woodworking skills is "WORTHEFFORT!

The philosophy of this reminds me of THE best art and design course ever taken. Unlike most all art instruction where students had to spend a minor fortune on all kinds of supplies, and stuff, the instructor had us buy nothing more than a couple of H2 lead pencils and a sharpener and simple paper. Only for the final did we invest in a better sheet of paper. Those skills learned over those months are never forgotten. And I think I might have spend no more that a few dollars the entire semester. But the sills learned were deep and forever.

I just finished mine and wanted to say thank you! I love this thing and I’m proud it only took a couple tools. I also love all your videos but I think the ones I got the most out of as a beginner are the ones that go in depth on how trees, the material, grow and how they interact with the tools, or cutting edges. No one else I have seen goes into the fundamentals like that. You are a true teacher. Thank you!

Thank you for taking the time to explain what, how and why you are doing. It makes everything so much more clear. Your a real teacher and woodworker. Not just a showman.

Fantastic!! You're a natural teacher. Loved every minute of this video. Just so happens , as I have retired I've just acquired basically an empty, unfinished basement in my house. And it will become my woodworking shop. The first thing I need to build is a good stable workbench.. As a "self-taught woodworker who has made a number of projects in the distant past, some good, some not so good, it is refreshing to watch and learn from a true craftsman such as yourself. Thank you very much. Can't wait to get back into things and look forward to further videos from you. You're the Best!

Thanks for your time and effort to teach your skills 👍

I want to thank you for making this video. Seriously I have been watching lots of different videos on starter benches and it seems like so many assume you already have all the power tools on hand. I will be making this bench this winter.

I'm 70 years old and just moved to a new home and am building a workbench in my garage. Your tutorial has given me a lot of info / ideas to incorporate into my build and for future jobs. Thanks a lot and I look forward to watching more of your tutorials to remind me of things I knew but have forgotten over the years..

I'm in the process of finding a workbench to build. Found a few candidates on YT and elsewhere, ranging from basic (built from all 2x4s) to intricate (requiring tools I don't have, and using mortise & tenon joints). But after finding yours, I think it might be the one. Not only are your details clear, concise and educational, you realize we live in the real world - may not have specialty tools, and that our needs will likely change in the future (i.e. this will probably only be my FIRST workbench). So... I might actually attempt this one. Thanks!!

This video has seriously got me excited about this stuff. Thank you so much for posting this for free, I sincerely appreciate you! I have a feeling my woodworking journey will continue past my immediate needs.

Thanks for your instruction. I built this workbench and it turned out awesome! It is solid as a rock, much better than anything I could have tried to buy somewhere. I'm excited to start using MY workbench...that I built myself! All my cuts(excluding the plywood cuts done at the retailer) were done by hand. My cuts improved with experience and time. I'm glad I stumbled across your channel. Great job teaching. Can't wait to see what I build next. Probably some shelves in my growing workshop.

Thank you Shawn for taking your time and share your woodworking knowledge and experience with us, I´m a beginner on this and self-student, watching videos and tutorials. I've made my first workbench using pallets for a little corner on my appartment and only with hand-tools. It was a great experience and the bench, eventhoug its a little bit ugly, is sturdy. Yor rock, its one of the most clear, and usefuls tutorials I've seen those days. Thanks again and be sure that, at least me, I've learned a lot with nbr 1 video.

I built my own box to hold 3 30 gallon garbage cans for my chicken food. I wish i had found your video before. I however did a good job considering i had just a small workbench my husband made that was 4 x 3 feet and a very rough top, not level at all. I built it with no help and out of old wood from an old chicken coop. It is sturdy and strong but the front door is slightly warped so it wont close right. No matter im still proud of the job i did. I want to make another one and with the skills i learned from your video i hope this one will be better. Thank you for your help
    Jackie
