- Super Smash Bros Ultimate and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe are two of the biggest games on the Nintendo switch. What makes the two of them stand out however is their incredible DLC, with smash ultimate getting fighters pass 1 and fighters pass 2 and mario kart 8 deluxe getting 6 waves of the booster course pass. With the recent release of wave 6, both game’s DLC has finally come to an end, but that leaves the question of which game got better DLC? Smash ultimate added 12 new fighters: piranha plant, joker, hero, banjo, terry, byleth, min min, steve, sephiroth, pyra, kazuya and sora whereas the booster course pass added 48 tracks from previous mario kart games. So join me as I take a look at super smash bros ultimate and mario kart 8 deluxe to determine which game got the best DLC and see if both of them are worth it!

Something you didnt mention is that in the video Sakurai made to show off Steve's moveset for smash, he stated that he and his programmers had to modify EVERY SINGLE STAGE in the game with a new grid system just so that Steve could simply place blocks. If that doesnt show the love and attention smash bros dlc got, idk what does
Maybe was the case, but I think he was referring to assigning different parts of stages materials for mining more than anything
I think one aspect you should’ve taken into account was replayability. With Mario Kart you’re gonna want to race on the new tracks over and over again where as with Smash, you’ll try out all of the new characters at least once, but only continue playing as the ones you really latch onto
Yeah I definitely agree with this. The only DLC characters that I play from time to time is Byleth and Hero. Honestly I get way more replayability from the stages, but even then Hollow Bastion and Northern Cave are easily substituted for Smashville and Kalos respectively.
However if you latch onto a new character that would make you replay that content more.

Actually, the booster course pass DID have 48 new tracks, because we got the staff credits. But we can also count Yoshi’s island results and the separate variants of Koopa cape, Singapore, moonview, 3ds rainbow road, and Madrid drive. That gives us 57 new music tracks to listen to.
Madrid only has one remix, the museum and stadium variants are their tour versions just with reverb.

Honestly to me, mariokart wins by a little bit. They randomly decided to double the game's content for less than half the price 5 years after the game came out, almost 10 years after the original. And they added some QoL things like the music selection thing and the new characters. Were some of the tracks misses? Yes, 14 cities was excessive. But I think most of the tracks were pretty good considering they had to make 8 in around 3 months or so for like 2 years (excpet for sky garden that one sucked😒)
Don't forget they added the ability to disable items as you see fit. Granted you don't need the DLC to do this, but also this feature wouldn't exist if it wasn't for the DLC.

its kinda misleading to say it doubled the games content, bc it's just a bunch of crappy tour ports with graphics that look like it's a gamecube game. The genuinely retro tracks suck as well because they do no justice to their originals, like how they butchered both rainbow roads and removed koopa cape zappers like WHY
I’d much rather they never done this and put that time into making the new Mario kart. Like you said the games been out coming up to 10 years now (and I’ve been playing since its launch lol) and the quality of life changes should of been in the deluxe in the first place
i think it'd be a lot more fear to compare the smash characters to the mario kart stages and vice-versa as the characters in smash, and the race tracks in mario kart are what really gives you gameplay, while mario kart characters, and smash stages dont change the game nearly as much(especially when you already have the base roster)
As a Terry Main, I have to say, walking up to someone, asking if they're ok, and then exploding them instantly has never felt this satisfying.

I LOVE how I’m likely on of the only 3 people in the entire world (or maybe even the only one) to actually, unironically be delighted and like the inclusions of both Min Min and Peachette for SSBU & MK8D’s DLCs respectively.
I don’t care if they are (for the most part anyways) despised by literally everybody else, I love their character desings and the re presentati in they give off. Heck they may even be the only real and genuine surprises I’ve had about these DLCs, mainly due to everything else being either spoiled to me, me not knowing about the character prior to the reveal or just really not anything special.
So yeah even if I may be alone in genuinely loving and supporting their inclusions, I do not hold any such regret or remorse for them at all, one bit. Quite the opposite in fact, I say they deserved to be included and I’ll die on that hill. 🍜👑

These were some of the BEST DLC'S I've EVER seen! They were both amazing for different reasons! Now we just need proper Mario Odyssey and Wonder DLC!!!

My problem with this comparison is that the characters aren’t the meat of Mario Kart. It’s the tracks.
While the Fighters are the meat of Smash. Not the stages.
You should actually compare the quality of the fighters to the quality of the tracks, as that’s the meat of both DLC.
Terry was known by pretty much everyone who actually dared to play fighting games outside of smash. Truly the strongest and bravest amongst society. Do not act like he was some un-known the entire south america region probably went into a week long celebration as a reaction to his reveal.

Great video! I personally really like this style of comparing 2 different games on a specific criteria and I would really like to see some more videos on it, maybe you could make a video on Mario 64 vs Mario Odyssey or Mario Kart DS vs Mario Kart 7, either way really great video!
I my opinion, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe had the best DLC. I like Smash Ultimate’s DLC, but tbh I was more excited for the new tracks rather than the new Smash Ultimate characters
I would say the same, only beacause I was less aware of many franchaises, only using smash to promote those games. Even with a lot of quality, it doesn't mean that almost half of the fighter pass is more like an add for a certain game.
Just like Fire emblem, xenoblade chronicles and Arms. Not to mention that Steve is more like a meme, like Sans.
And let's be honest, most of us olny will play the SSB stages 1 time or a couple of times (for the spirits and classic mode's) and then will forget them in the abyss

While I wasn’t excited for Pyra, playing Xenoblade 2 changed my opinion on that. It’s now my favorite game of all time, and they became one of my new mains.

Mario kart technically doesn’t have 47 music tracks because some tracks have different versions of that track theme. Ex koopa cape has a unique music piece when you enter the forest section.🥒

Prevideo thoughts: I think price wise, 8 dx, we got double the base game content and new characters. However I think smash did better content overall, as you got a bunch of new fighters, a stage for each, and new spirits.
personally my favourite DLC on the switch is xenoblade 2's, mostly just because it provides everything a fan of that game could want and a lot of it for a pretty cheap price

tbh i don’t think the quality vs quantity argument is entirely applicable, you only spend a couple minutes max on each track at a time and the experience of each race is generally the same regardless of track, unlike a high quality smash character like steve being added that fundamentally changes your gameplay experience, mariokart tracks and characters are not capable of the same level of “quality” that smash dlc is because the game just isn’t as nuanced and particular, so it’s in bad faith to hold them to the same standard.

I think all of the things here can be different for everyone. Im someone that does not play smash for example, so i did not care at all when something new released, but just could NOT wait when a new BCP wave released. Another example would be the music; im a huge fan of the music of mario kart, and always listen to it, while i never listen to super smash bros music. It's also hard to make old mariokart songs feel more modern then they already were, or keeping the same feel as the original. I might also be a bit biased, but you are too; just check timestamp 12:55.
I feel as though the approachable aspect of the dlc could've been considered. Several of the dlc fighters in smash ultimate are up there with the most complex fighters to master. That makes wanting to try them more daunting/difficult for a casual player. Compared to the Mario Kart dlc which is arguably approachable for all skills since is just more races and characters with nothing much really changing the skill ceiling/floor.

That’s good! I haven’t touched the online in a while, but it’s always a letdown when a game’s community gets segregated by the release of a DLC.

These DLCs are so close to each other. They’re both amazing and make their already great games far better. I think the BCP is the better DLC though because of one thing: Price!!
By the way, the bcp did add 48 new music tracks. The new credits added a new song!

This feels like the argument beetween terraria and minecraft. They are simply both good in their own right.
My only critique about the smash DLC stages is despite the gimmicks, the only one stage added that wasn’t essentially a flat stage with a gimmick was Spiral Mountain. Not a lot of variety compared to the MK8 DLC tracks
I think a better way to compare the two DLC’s would have been by giving each dlc a ranking in a category of 1-10 and then taking the average and declaring that the winner. This way it would represent if the two DLC’s are similar in an area and allow credit to be given to both. Not that I disliked this video or anything, it was still very entertaining to see this comparison even in this format.

Ultimate had DLC built from the ground up, and actually made to look consistent with the base game.

I think there was a missed oppotunity to talk about how in MK8D you can still play on the DLC courses, I know you can play DLC maps in smash but the courses are the main part of MK8D DLC while it's the characters for Smash
I don't understand why 99.9999 percent of people think that the booster course pass was low quality. First of all every track is so unique from each other and for what ever reason everyone loves airship fortress when it is unironicly one of the worst tracks since the snes tracks it is actually horrible. And the quality of the tracks was surprisingly good despite what most people say the vast majority of tracks were at least on par with the base game if not above it. I have two complaints with it one. They didn't include dino dino jungle the 3rd best Mario kart track of all time and two. They added to many characters both in the booster course and especially the base game that are not Mario characters (funky and diddy Kong from the booster course and way more in the base game) this is MARIO kart not Nintendo kart but those are both basically irrelevant as there are plenty of actual Mario characters not to mention all the mii costumes (if I can't be a goomba I can at least make my mil look like one) and they added the 2 best tracks of all time coconut mall and 3ds rainbow road so in short the booster course is definitely the better dlc. Or maby this is just another entry on my seemingly endless and continually growing list of controversial Mario / apparently Nintendo opinions

smash ultimate got the best dlc because i can now play as a piranha plant fighting minecraft steve in hanenbow from the ds music toy game electroplankton while an official toby fox custom remix of megalovania plays as it is one of the songs that can be played on hanenbow for obvious reasons
gosh i am so happy that hanenbow got into smash somehow. f***ing electroplankton of all things. i loved that game. and now it is officially linked to megalovania in an official real collaboration between nintendo and toby fox

I think overall hype, yeah Smash wins it but I was much more of a fan of the BCP. While I grew up simultaneously with both Mario Kart and Smash Bros, I found Mario Kart to be way more exciting because the DLC brought 48 tracks back from previous games. Idk I love Smash too but a lot of the characters were misses for me personally even though they were hype imo. Like when they came out I played them for like a day and then I stopped playing Smash again but Mario Kart, every new wave I stayed for like 2 or so weeks before being bored. Plus I also liked the speculation community of the BCP. Was a lot of fun talking with people about which tracks had a great chance and which ones didn’t and still having a bit of surprise factor sprinkled in there. Not good ones though like Airship Fortress sadly.
tbf making Smash stages, especially the ones where they move like Hero’s stage needed a lot of 3D modelling effort, so idk…
And yes Los Angeles Laps is one of the best thing to ever happen in gaming

- Pokémon version A VS version B (Scarlet/Violet, Sword/Shield...)
- Zelda BotW VS Zelda TotK
- Super Mario Odyssey VS Super Mario Bros. Wonder (No bias is allowed)
Odyssey and Wonder aren’t nearly as comparable as the other ones, one of them is a 3D Super Mario 64-esque platformer while the other is basically if a New Super Mario Bros. game had creative level design but almost no bosses (and Odyssey is still better even without bias)
As much as I loved the Smash DLC I feel like a very big factor for me is playability. Yeah sure the characters are cool and their trailers were hype but most of them just don't really mesh with me playing as them. Most of them are fine but I feel like the only standouts are Joker, Terry, Sephiroth and the Aegis. Meanwhile overlooking the fluctuating visual quality are mostly the tacks we remember in the amazing 8 engine. This isn't to say I appreciate the dip in visual quality, just that most of the tracks are fun to race on no matter what.
You could compare all dlc included in the Nintendo Switch Online expansion pack

I think it definitely depends on which game you play and enjoy more. I get way more enjoyment from playing Mario Kart than smash, (I'm bad at smash) and even though I didn't initially vote because I couldn't decide, through the video, I found myself wanting Mario kart to win, so that's my favorite
Also, I have 20+ video games across 5 different consoles, and I only regularly play 3. (Minecraft ps4, Mario Kart 8 deluxe switch, and MLB the show 16 ps4). I'll play smash too, but not as regularly as those 3.
Both are great but I’d say MK because it literally doubled the content in the game, and added extra perks like characters, music player, custom items, etc.
