    Hi Jay, I just wanted to say your 20 in 20 series is absolutely fantastic. I am still working my way through each of your 20/20 vlogs but have loved it so far. A wonderful snapshot summary of each arrondissement has been wonderful and interesting. I love the views, history and culture. I can't wait to visit Paris again to experience all these new places you have shown, as well as to see the sights, taste the food, hear the sounds and get the same joy you get from being in this amazing city. I must admit that this series has reinvigorated my interest in your vlogs like an enormous boost of adrenalin. Thank you.

    And as the weather starts to get better, I'd recommend the "Parc st cloud" (end of line 10, across the Seine), very big and nice park with one of the best views of Paris. And to go out a bit of PAris, St germain en Laye has a nice castle, and charming streets (and also a nice view of Paris).

    A hidden gem, an historical architectural anomaly, a neo-Byzantine style building that blends in with the Haussmannian architecture around it on rue Georges Bizet, one of the prettiest streets in the 16th arrondissement, is the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of St Stephen from the Belle Epoque period, consecrated in 1895, the height of beautiful decorative classical architecture in Europe. It was financed by well-known Greek shipowners and industrialists who were active in east-west trade during the 19th century and were particulary present in Marseille, which of course was France's most busy and important port city. The church is like a little bit of old Constantinople in a very Parisian setting.
    Maria Callas, considered the greatest soprano of all time, had her funeral in the church and Edith Piaf's wedding to her Greek partner Theo Sarapo was also held in the church. It's not big and somewhat inconspicuous externally, but beautifully decorated internally, with minton tiling on the surfaces and a lovely marble iconostasis. There's also a memorial to the Greek people who fought for France.
    Anyway, just thought I'd share that with you, as a lesser-known and unusual attraction of the 16th arrondissement. IMHO it's these type of diverse anomalies that add interest and character to a city. You should visit one Sunday if you like. I am not a member of the church and as an outsider had no issue walking in, going upstaris to the gallery and checking it all out.

    That amusement park next to Louis Vuitton is steam punk / Jules Verne themed. We entered FOC from LV. Small but well done aesthetically. Definitely for kids. Lots of greenery. Food and drink inside is better than your average amusement park, but not so satisfying. There was one interesting upscale lunch place in an old fashion house, but had a very looong line.

  • @digabledoug
    @digabledoug 4 года назад +1

    The Jardin d'Acclimation is strictly for young kids but it is pretty amazing, charming, kinda old school and dare I say magical at dusk in typical French amusement park fashion. Lots of old style rides, animals and petting zoo, a Petit Train that circles around back to Porte Maillot and fun things to do. Rides are kid size but some adults get on with small kids. I ended up there after going through the Foundation Louis Vuitton museum. They wouldn't let people leave through the main entrance only the back which puts you inside the Jardin d'Acclimation. So I just strolled through the whole thing and left since I was a single middle aged man with no kids (I started to feel self conscious about giving off a creepy vibe). The Louis Vuitton Foundation by Frank Gehry is pretty amazing on the outside but it is hard to get a good look at it because you are so close. The park out the back entrance gives a much better view of the whole thing. Inside it is a great contemporary museum but the real star are the multilevel roof terraces that the glass "sails" enclose. Very cool with fantastic views over the Bois de Boulogne to the Eiffel Tower and skyscrapers of La Défense while you take a break, sip coffee, and fantasize about flying your futuristic sail barge over the city of Paris. Maybe that's just me.

  • @cristalmartinez7637
    @cristalmartinez7637 5 лет назад +2

    Frank Gehry is pretty distinct, he's like those fancy wines that you know are expensive because they're complex and structured but you'll still it pass over for a glass of £4 mixed red.

    The Maritime museum at Trocadéro, one of the more random museums I’ve been to, was oddly compelling and definitely worth a visit. There was a special exhibition dedicated to the Concorde obelisk and how the French managed to cart the thing back from Egypt, an engineering challenge of no small order!

    This is one of your best vlogs, Jay. You definitely need to go back and see the interior of the Fondacion Louis Vuitton. I think it's one of the most exciting recent buildings in the world, designed by Frank Gehry, of course. Perhaps you should devote an entire vlog to the Bois de Bouologne; many people never see it because they think it's too far away. You could talk about Roland Garros and the waterfall next to the spectacular Grand Cascade resto. There is a navette at metro stop Etoile that for one euro will take you straight to the LV Fondacion. I saw the inaugural exhibition a couple of years ago and then went again last month when I was in Paris for my birthday. I am loving this series; I feel like a short trip to Paris every morning. I do think better of the Palais de Tokyo than you do, however. ;-) Thanks so much for all your energy and stamina. BTW, that photo is from my AirBnB apartment on Place Blanche with the Moulin Rouge in the background. What a locale!

    We have a Gehry designed art gallery
    in the town next to us.
    Visually it is interesting but
    and it is a big but...
    there are few if any flat walls in the building
    and many of the art works are flat.
    I suspect the Louis Vuitton Foundation
    might have the same problem.
    I think that the building for art should not overshadow the art itself.
    In the town where the Gehry building is
    opposite the building in fact
    there is the old post office
    which is a "boring" and very rectangular building
    ideal for an art gallery
    but that has been turned into a shopping arcade

    Foch seems to be getting a couple of mentions. Pronounced Fosh. Actually first world war - allied Generalissimo in the latter stages of WW1 technically outranking even Pershing and Haig. Masterminded the allied victory in 1918. Tomb near to Napoleon's under the dome of the Invalides (shows how highly he was regarded). Awarded France's highest military honour (Maréchal de France) and also made Field Marshal of Great Britain and Poland for good measure. His equestrian statue is by Trocadéro near the most famous view of the Eiffel Tower. Also commemorated in street names across France.
