Installed that and performance tools and it’s legit a ball changer. Without them Undisputed a boxing game recently released was running at 10-15 fps now it’s locked at a perfect 30. Amazing.
In my limited testing, this utility shines the brightest when the interconnects between the parts are heavily loaded - IE when large amounts of shader comp or other data streaming is going on. Dead Space and Horizon would be good examples of this. These tiny tweaks to memory handling allow the CPU to spend more time feeding the GPU in those cases. That's where those unusually high boosts to average FPS come from. In lighter games the primary benefit will probably be a slight boost to your 1% lows - basically any situation where a higher latency memory task occurs.
These kinds of tweaks are awesome. I play pretty much all modern games at 30 FPS on mine to preserve battery life (even at 30 FPS and a mix of low and original a game like God of War clocks in at about 2 hours, I wouldn't want to push it further) but for someone who is pushing for 60, especially if someone is docking their deck, this is an amazing utility.

I’ll say this just made my steam deck more snappy. Mine would take a few seconds to exit games and now it exits so much faster. The game proformance has been a bit better not not crazy gains. It’s definitely worth doing.
Just getting demanding games to 45fps is more than enough let alone 30 depending on the game. Some might hit 60 with adjustments. Long as it’s playable and a good experience, that’s what fundamentally matters.
@@StarScreamReee oh for sure 45fps doesn’t feel much different than 60fps but sure as hell is noticeable compared 30 lol. I like games to be at least 40. That’s very enjoyable to me.

@@MrSmegmasteve no the settings in cryoutilities are global for all games. Hogwarts Legacy did get a good performance boost using it and also using proton-ge version 49+
If anyone is curious about part of the theme he is running. Its the Pip-Boy theme that i appart in creating. You can change the colour to whatever you want. Have fun!
My steamdeck has become a bit of a Fallout76 machine of late.... This improves the performance noticably so. Running much smoother at a mix of medium to high settings at 40fps. I wouldn't go as far as to say locked but it running a lot closer to 40 than 30 prety darn consistently and has definitely reduces the stutter that was occuring when new chubks of the map are being loaded in (or what I assume are new chunks being loaded in !). Thanks for the clear guide as always ETA, much appreciated ;)
The only thing I'd recommend before doing this is making sure you have enough free space on you SSD. I believe the recommend Cryo setting will want enough of free space to increase the swap file, I think the defult is either 8 or 16GB.
Current version is 2.1.4 by the way. There was a recent steam OS update as well, so performance is even better. Did a benchmark on shadow of the tomb raider maxed out on every setting with 37 fps average min 30. So if that’s what ultra max AA gets you, tweaking settings can get 60fps. It is game by game as well as what proton you’re using as well as your steam settings but the gains over stock or standard is quite obvious especially when it comes to stutter. I would imagine this would reflect in emulation perhaps as well.

My biggest kind of open question about CryoUtilities is "Why didn't Valve make these the system defaults themselves?" The only thing I can think of, at least as far as the swap file size change is concerned, is that they expected the 64GB model to be the top selling SKU and didn't want to take 16 GB of that space away. But some of the other things, like 4GB dedicated VRAM or the swappiness settings seem like they should still be doable on the 64GB one.
@@chrisperrywv there’s no need to explain everyone knows, they made the steam deck only to test their little science project skills just like they usually did with all of their hardwares and they didn’t expect it to be this popular
@@jamesmiles3341 This is one of the crazier takes I’ve seen on this lol. Shouldn't shared graphics memory just take what it needs and leave the rest to system? What's going wrong that a manual setting makes it perform better?
Hey I’m a little late, but I’m certain this works. I’m currently playing Elden Ring on a standard Steam Deck (slight performance increase with the OLED) and before Cryo, the game would run around 30-35fps in the overworld and 45-50fps in closed areas. After installing Cryo, I’m getting 35-40fps in the overworld and a more consistent 45-50 fps in closed areas. So you’ll see a decent boost for most games, just don’t expect a crazy boost to your games.
I have the 64gb version and my games run on a 512 gb sd-card. Does CryoUtilities 2.0 work for the 64gb version with a sd-card or i need to upgrade to an ssd ?
It should work fine, but you may want or need to set some things lower than recommended like the swap file. There is an option to move compat files for a game to the sd card if the game is installed there, which could free up some space on the internal drive. That said, I would recommend upgrading to a larger bit of storage. That would make it much easier to deal with the space requirements and compat files.
@@CandysChannel You can't void your warrrany by upgrading the internal storage. Not only has Valve stated they honor the warranty in that situation, they legally cannot void it just because somebody opened it up. I recommended upgrading the storage because even with an SD card, the system downloads the shader cache to the internal storage and the shader cache for games can get pretty large, sometimes making it very difficult to even download a game even if there is plenty of room on the SD card. Cryo Utilities offers the ability to increase or decrease the swap file. And the recommended option is 16GB. That's not that bad on a 256 or larger SSD, but for the 64GB emmc model, that's over 1/4th of the remaining space (since the OS also takes up space). You could technically store the swap file on the SD card, but performance would be absolutely terrible so it's absolutely not recommended. Cryo Utilities does offer the ability to move the compat files (which includes the shader cache), to the drive where the game is stored, which would help quite a bit, but given that shaders work best when loaded from internal storage since they have to be loaded on the fly, moving them to the sd card will potentially cause performance issues in some games. Lastly, 1TB might be overkill for it anyway, since if you wanted to download a lot of games, you would need to frequently go into desktop mode and transfer the compat files to avoid filling the internal storage. This back and forth would get pretty tedious. Without moving the compat files, you would likely never fill the sd card with enough steam games before the internal storage got full from shader files, though you could use the space for other things like roms and iso files.

You don't wanna set the vram to 4gb all the time if u do a game using 1gb of vram will constantly have 4gb of vram set aside for it decreasing ram u have available dropping performance the steam deck has 16gb of ram in total so if u set the vram to 4gb u only ever get 12gb of ram on a game that uses 1gb of vram
