  • In 1991, KTCA did a documentary on St. Paul's Past, including a section on Rondo, St. Paul's black neighborhood that was lost block by block to make way for I-94.
00:00 Black life in St. Paul to the words of August Wilson
00:48 A highway runs through it: the destruction of Rondo
01:40 Evelyn lost her home to the highway and she takes us on a tour of her old street
02:43 What was it like growing up in Rondo?
03:23 Black St. Paul gathered together in Rondo
05:00 I-94 is built directly through Rondo, destroying the community
06:18 1 out of every 8 Black families in the city lost their home to I-94
07:04 Evelyn sees photos of the home she lost 30 years ago
07:52 Rondo continues to change, accelerated by I-94
08:45 Evelyn remembers her old home

This is so sad. One out of every 8 homeowners displaced...for a highway. Unreal.

The look on Evelyn's face when she was given the photos of her childhood home is priceless! 🙂

I can play a blade of grass too. It my house had the same grass. My house was demolished in the 90’s after my mom sold it to the state and we bought another house nearby !!!

The only part of the video that I don’t like is when he’s talking over muted video of Evelyn Fairbanks speaking. I feel like they could have put his part elsewhere so that we could have heard more from her but that’s just my opinion.

I think the neighborhood displaced by the Expressway most likely relocated to Snelling and South Snelling Avenue. Snelling Avenue is now the relocated Rondo.
