The second part of this extended aria/scene contains some of Tchaikovsky's most passionate and inspired vocal and orchestral writing, it never fails to move. The singer, orchestra and conductor do it full justice in a wonderfully committed and artistically superb performance. Bravi tutti!
This lady has to be one of the best performers I have ever heard, simply beautiful and such feeling and soul into everything she sings. Asmik is so pleasing to they eye as well of course. Wonderful star.

I've had the privilege of hearing her perform this live in St Petersburg. This aria requires so much technical skill and emotional commitment from the singer, and Grigorian performs it so beautifully.
This is an outstanding take by a great young star. I've watched it several times on Mezzo, they've been using it as part of their "intermezzo" pool of shorter pieces between regular programmes, and she really captures the lyrical power and turmoil of this night-time scene (plus she looks great!). Also saw it performed by Anna Netrebko in 2016, in a livecast transmission of the entire opera from the New York Met - she was amazing as well, her melodic versatility and leaping voice, and not least her ability to transform herself into a lonely teenage girl. :)
@@louise_rose Do you think the section of the opera reflects the turmoil in Tchaikovsky's life at the time.?
Other than a few of his dedicated followers, few people realise that he wrote 11 operas during his lifetime.
@@wilsjane Well, I think his gay orientation (which used to be hushed down in biographic writing about him) must have meant a struggle within himself to understand and accept his own nature, and this probably made it easier for him to "get" and musically sympathize with the loneliness and outsiderhood of both Tatiana and Onegin. Or of the people in "Queen of Spades" - another opera of his about two young and unhappy lovers who are burnt by their desire and failure to fit in with the upper-class society around them.
I'm not saying this is simply a "translation" of his own experience as a homosexual man, but his being a gay man (and often a closet gay) would have helped in his understanding of these characters.

I agree with you about the operas.
Another brilliant work is his symphonic poem Manfred. Why it is miscalled his Manfred symphony baffles me. his intentions were clear in the opus numbers.
Even the BBC got it wrong in the announcements during the Proms.
@@wilsjane Well, his one attempt to become a married man ended in disaster and a suicide attempt (he ran into the freezing river or some such). It's surely no coincidence that he and Madame von Meck had agreed never to meet face to face; the connection was as friends from afar (and her financial patronage of him), with no expectations to ever join together in public.
Before the 1960s/70s or so it wasn't really possible for people writing about him to admit that he wasn't a straight guy,, because being HS was still seen as a disease, but I think his perception of outsiderhood and misunderstanding within these opera characters is linked to it (his ballets, on the other hand, openly celebrate married life as the highest good - especially The Nutcracker).
Asmik Grigorian is utterly fabulous as Tatiana! Look at her face during the performance. She really means it.

She is a singer first and foremost. You don’t need to look at her to know she means it - she expresses it through singing very well.
The letter scene is maybe the best part of the whole opera. Tatiana’s voice touches you deeply and can moves you to tears.
Yes but the entire opera is such a human story, intimate and questioning, a real ensemble drama (and set to amazing music!)

This is her repertoire! Not Turandot, Salome and other to dramatic stuff. This is beautiful and feminine, she does not scream here. But it is enhanced by a microphone of course in our days.

This isn't an aria, it's a Letter Scene.
The aria becomes more and more loosely defined in the latter half of the 19th century. In the end it’s just a section for solo singer and orchestra.

Asmik is one of the greatest hopes for the future of the opera. But I was shocked by the incoherent introduction by this famous orchestra.
Opera singers do not use Taurine to improve the voice box. Tomato is their best friend or grapes perhaps. After all wine mixed with egg yolk is a good way to clean your voice if raw eggs are safe to drink. So grapes should be fine. No Taurine.

Asmik is a lyrico-spinto, unfortunately so rare in history. Her timbre is warm and her voice is voluptuous, her center is firm and her high notes are robust, without wobbles and without the classic gap between the middle and high registers. Comparisons are odious and should be avoided. But if you want to do them, Asmik's voice is much closer to the "voce d'angelo". Thank you for uploading this material!

Природа наделила её голосом. Техники не хватает, все регистры неровно звучат. Слышны переходные ноты. Нужно работать и работать над техникой. Мецце-воче отсутствует, где кантеленность. Партия Татьяны не для неё. В этой партии нужен более светлый лирический тип голоса. Освежитесь Галиной Павловной Вишневской...
