- I have uploaded this video because, in my opinion, it firmly validates opera as music-drama! And it would thus be a great introduction to anyone who wants to explore this amazing art-form.
This is an excerpt from a FANTASTIC performance, starring Anna Netrebko and Mariusz Kwiecien, which is available on Blu-ray and DVD from Deutsche Grammophon and for streaming from Met Opera On Demand.
Without a doubt, one of the most beautiful and dramatic endings in the history of opera (music); if not the most beautiful! Almost every phrase sung by the two protagonists here is practically an aria (within the final aria)!! ...if I may say so!?
Fantastically good. Top singing AND also more dramatic and passionate than the end scene is uually. Really brings to life Onegin's heroic-tragic Lord Byron (cf Pushkin's poem).

Both are amazing.I am really sad that he has to stop singing on a stage because he is born actor.Of course his 2 accidents are big concern but it’s quite a pity.He is the best Oneguin i have heard👏🙏🔥🙌👍
Mariusz Kwiecien is good yet Artur Rucinski is better :) I saw them both on stage and believe me Artur Rucinski is the Oniegin. Unfortunately there are very few recordings of Artur on yt. I've seen a few versions of this, which sadly usually ends up in a display of overly histrionic flailing around each other across the stage, but wow, the way this is staged and acted here is quite tastefully understated comparatively and superb with the surprise twist at the end - BRAVISSIMO

this is about the musical performance, of course. but i think the movie with ralph fiennes did more justice to pushkin. with no words at all
Can someone tell me if Anna Karenina was written first or did Tchaikovsky compose this opera first?
Anna Karenina's novel was written by Leo Tolstoy. And Tchaikovsky's opera "Eugene Onegin" was written based on the novel in verse by Alexander Pushkin
No and no! It does not even approach Renée Fleming's delicate, fragile beauty and elegance. Dmitry Hvorostovsky's aristocratic appearance, chiseled tone.
We can argue what Tatiana and Onegin characters are. Let's enjoy different very talented acting choices. Both productions deserve our praise. Mariusz gave his heart and soul (and health) portraying this Onegin and touched many hearts worldwide.
Unfortunately Renee has quite strong accent and its hard to listen for native Russian people

Very true. I found this performance bland. Fleming and Hvorostovsky are vocally and dramatically far superior.
One is retired and the other is dead. What should we do? Never watching EO again?

Really sorry that she’s out at the MET. It seems harsh and counterintuitive to free speech and expression. I mean did Europeans do this when the US lied to go to Iraq. Putin’s a psychopath, but why should they demand capitulation from a soprano. I also have several recordings by Gergiev. I also think it makes Ukrainian or Russian performers uncomfortable to have to make a political statement.

Боже, как это далеко от Пушкина! Татьяна больше напоминает Анну Каренину, идущую бросаться под поезд. А Онегин - какая-то пародия. Он то ли пьяный, то ли бомж, не поймешь. Чего он все время на земле валяется, на ногах не стоит? Зима ж на улице. Бедный Александр Сергеевич!
А то, что, например, Ленский в предсмертной арии исполняет (причём совершенно серьёзно) пародийные стихи - это вас не возмущает? Или неизвестно откуда взявшийся Грёмин (у Пушкина не было такого персонажа). Так что опера Чайковского - не меньшее насилие над романом Пушкина.
А Мариуш в партии Онегина - огонь просто!

.Чайковский дал ему только фамилию. А по поводу насилия Чайковского над Пушкиным.... ТАК не было бы Чайковского, не было бы и оперы. И что бы пел Ваш "огонь"?
Это не роман Пушкина... Это опера Чайковского... И очень хорошо, что постановка отличается от привычной вам, затертой до дыр... У зрителя должен быть выбор... А голоса чудесные... Нетребко божественна..

What is this? But really? This guy sounds and looks like a parody. After seeing Hvorostovsky as Onegin at The Met and ROH I have to say that this production is a joke and this singer is a bad joke. Poor Anna Netrebko.
Kwiecien is more believable in that role. I think he did great job.
Confirmed by many people on u tube who seen the performance live.
