I came across this quite by accident. BUT....I agree with what Mr. Simmons is saying! I don't understand all the backlash on this page regarding Mr. Simmon's sex life.... What does that have to do with the case in question? Please consider my response from the position of a being Canadian. Here, we have a similar system to the UK, and I for one fully appreciate that journalists are not allowed to dig through people's garbage and condemn them on television previous to a court decision, or even offer "opinions" which seem prejudicial on whether the court ruled correctly or not. I came across this quite by accident. BUT....I agree with what Mr. Simmons is saying! I don't understand all the backlash on this page regarding Mr. Simmon's sex life.... What does that have to do with the case in question? Please consider my response from the position of a being Canadian. Here, we have a similar system to the UK, and I for one fully appreciate that journalists are not allowed to dig through people's garbage and condemn them on television previous to a court decision, or even offer "opinions" which seem prejudicial on whether the court ruled correctly or not. Still, with so many coming forward it is clear Weinstein is likely at fault for at least some of these allegations. What I most agree with Mr. Simmons most is that NO ONE JUST HANDS YOU YOUR RIGHTS. Every oppressed people everywhere in the world has had to DEMAND their rights, sometimes through violent revolution and sometimes through large and cohesive passive resistence. Men did NOT happily hand over voting rights to women, slavery (and the slave trade) was not ended by white people who suddenly decided that human rights were more important than humans as commercial assets, and peasants had to revolt -- even when it economically made more sense - to end feudalism. The argument we have to make is that everything in the Weinstein case and in the way that men and women interact and communicate is about POWER. In the West we forget that Human Rights are not a gift. Our ancestors had to fight to change to the system that we take for granted today. Men ARE jackasses at heart, because society lets them be jackasses. Who wouldn't do whatever they wanted to do if they were always told they could do what they wanted and/or just felt good at the moment? Women make up half the population on Earth. WE HAVE TO START SAYING NO AND TAKING RESPONSIBILITY FOR OUR OWN SAFETY AND OUR OWN RIGHTS. The world will change but it will take time. It has and is still changing for the Black population in the USA, it is happening now for the Native population in Canada, and hopefully it will continue to change for women. We can make the decision to affect change by demanding we not only be treated as equals but that we are portrayed in media and entertainment as equals. Maybe if we women said NO more to playing the victim in television shows where the naked, raped and dead female body is a standard adornment to the plot maybe we wouldn't so often wind up naked, raped and dead quite so often in real life (one can dream). Women who play the role of sexual plaything promote their own exploitation. We women have to decide how we are perceived and treated as well as how we react to sexual discrimination -- and to see such discrimination as the form of power manipulation that it is.
