This is great, mashallah! I wish we had khutbahs like this at our masjid about these underlying assumptions that even many muslims have. I hate when I hear people justifying why they wear hijab because it's their choice. No, rather, it's the command of Allah.

Thank you for such an important lecture, Imam Tom.
(And we have all seen how certain hypocritical Muslim lands do the same double standards now, only following cultural rituals, but not the teachings of Quran or Sunnah).

Our rights and responsibilities come from our creator. The modern conception of human rights comes from the nafs. It truly is worship of the desires.

I'm a newly hijabi alhamdulillah, but I did want to point out a few things about "Choice". While sayyedna Muhammad ﷺ did dictate the rules through reciting Quran, he was ultimately transmitting the words of Allah, so it wasn't Man who made the ruling, rather Allah Himself. Yet, Muhammad ﷺ didn't go around to every Muslim woman and call her disobedient if she didn't cover up (yet)... nor do women these days go to men and ask them if they prayed the five mandatory prayers, or to cover their knees should they be wearing shorts... Islam is to accept or deny the message in Sincerity and to practice and embody the characteristics voluntarily -so it is the approach in that these rulers are taking that are problematic and causing a backfire and intense repel and rebel. The "Choice" of wearing Hijab should be sincere, to obey and please Allah first and foremost, and for our own wellbeing if women are taught about its importance not only for societal aspect but spiritual one too. Why do women wear the veil when praying alone at home even if no man is around or if they're all Mehrems? Answer is in order for Angels to pray alongside her. Why aren't we taught about the story of Khadija radya Allah anha performing a test for the prophet to check whether or not Gabriel is an angel? Angels hide away from uncovered women from their Hayaa. To be a Muslim is to believe in the unseen, the jinn and the angels included. We know that all have a qareen, and that shayateen aren't present if an angel is around, so in an angel's absence you can be sure that there are jinn surrounding you and probably bad ones (since good ones would attend to their business as assigned by Allah in their natural realm and not interfere with yours). In today's world of Feminism and striving to becoming an entrepreneur or a corporate world employee, why would you accept a dress code and federal tax for a wage and a retirement plan, but refuse Allah's dress code and code of conduct of what counts on your audit check on day of reckoning to secure your spot in eternal life in Jannah?

    Assalamualaikum wr wb.
    Good insight from Imam Tom.
He fully understands the errors in accepting the human rights issues.
If we apply it in the context of The Holy Quran, we can traces it back to the ideology of the tribes of Ya’juj wa Ma’juj whom rejected the message of Dzulqarnain to them that was to follow the commands of Allah and his messengers.
Dzulqarnain was sent to established Allah’s systems of governance throughout the world. A caliphate systems. He Dzulqarnain was a caliph.
The downfall of the system of governance using the Caliphate as a jurisdiction gave rise to the ideology of Ya’juj wa Ma’juj to establish the New World order. A secular system of governance.
If one understand the doctrines of Christianity that were spread by the Portuguese and Spanish, one will understood that it was not the message that Prophet Isa (pbuh) or Jesus Christ brought. It was more of an Anti Christ than Christ himself.
That’s the reasons we are witnessing the degeneration of morals in a mischievous mannerisms and the corruption that are rapidly growing in the world.
    Allah knows best.

As salaamu alaikum. Outstanding and important discussion very clearly presented. The one thing that was perhaps not emphasized was the direct link between the purposelessness that is inherent in the modern world view and people’s widespread alienation, anger, and hopelessness. I believe these are the roots of the violence, depression, anxiety, substance abuse, and thrill seeking that are so prevalent in our society. Thank you for shining a light on this problem and giving me a way to talk to my adult children about the brainwashing they received in the name of education.
A further discussion about these consequences as well as the myth of inclusivity could take another hour. I look forward to more! Jazakum Allah khair

As a person who disagrees with most of the premises, I will agree on one thing: human rights are an expansive ethical concept. Once people realize they have them, they don't want to lose them, and wish to make sure other people realize they have them.
I think that's a good thing, though. The expansiveness of the philosophy shelters it against people who essentialize and believe that people should be treated differently based on immutable characteristics. It leaves no room for bigotry or biological expectation when taken to its fullest extent.
You frame the failure to uphold the equality of human rights in the video as a philosophical disagreement between the western nations and Islamic ones (the Ukraine vs. Palestine racism, for example). I think it is plain racism. People don't care about people who don't look like them as much. That is essentialization, a failure to uphold the ideas of universal human rights and not a feature of the system. Even many Jews, the demographic most likely to support the suppression of Palestine, believe the treatment of Palestinians is unethical on human rights grounds. It is a genocide.

I found the citation 5760 in Abu Amina Elias, but I found it in 5928 in Al-Nassa’i’s Al-sunan Al-kubra here:
And 5760 is actually the one on being cautious on lost items, but I leave Elias’s citation so that people can know and rectify the mistake if they can contact him or if he sees it
Then again, maybe the edition I’m using has a different numbering system 🤷‍♂️

      @jj Qur'an verses on homosexuality
We also (sent) Lut: He said to his people: "Do ye commit lewdness such as no people in creation (ever) committed before you? For ye practise your lusts on men in preference to women : ye are indeed a people transgressing beyond bounds. And his people gave no answer but this: they said, "Drive them out of your city: these are indeed men who want to be clean and pure!" But we saved him and his family, except his wife: she was of those who legged behind. And we rained down on them a shower (of brimstone): Then see what was the end of those who indulged in sin and crime!
      Quran 7:80-83
And (remember) Lut: behold, he said to his people: "Ye do commit lewdness, such as no people in Creation (ever) committed before you. "Do ye indeed approach men, and cut off the highway?- and practise wickedness (even) in your councils?" But his people gave no answer but this: they said: "Bring us the Wrath of Allah if thou tellest the truth." He said: "O my Lord! help Thou me against people who do mischief!" When Our Messengers came to Abraham with the good news, they said: "We are indeed going to destroy the people of this township: for truly they are (addicted to) crime."
      Quran 29:28-31
